It can help you find a native English speaker who is trying to learn your native language, so you can swap language skills. Table tennis may not seem a reasonable option for someone with no armsbut Ibrahim Hamadtou doesn't believe in limits. The 48-year-old Egyptian Paralympian breaks the barrier by holding the paddle(球拍)in his mouth and using his right foot to serve the ball.

Hamadtou, who lost his arms in a train accident at the age of ten, was drawn to table tennis after being challenged by a friend. "I was once watching a match between two of my friends," Hamadtou explains. "They disagreed on a point, When I counted the point in favor of one of them, the other player told me, 'Mind your own business as you will never be able to play.' It was that statement that fired me up to decide to play table tennis."

It took Hamadtou three years to master the sport. He says the biggest challenge was figuring out the best way to control his body. "I was trying first to use the bat under the arm, and I also tried using other things, which weren't working so well. Finally, I tried using my mouth. It took me nearly a year of practice to get used to holding the paddle with my mouth and making the serve. With practice and playing regularly, this skill was improved."

The Egyptian's incredible talent came to light in 2014 when he was awarded the best Arab Athlete of the year. He won a silver medal at the 2016 African Championships, qualified for his first Paralympics in 2016 at 43, and then again for the 2020 Tokyo Games at 48.

The inspiring athlete says, "The disability is not in arms or legs but to give up in whatever you would like to do."

    24. What made Hamadtou take up table tennis?

    C. His willingness to inspire others.   D. His suffering in a train accident.

    25. What was the most difficult for Hamadtou to play table tennis?

    A. Serving the ball with his mouth.    B. Holding the paddle under his arm.

    C. Success gives people delight.    D. Nothing is impossible to a willing heart.

    C

Perhaps you have ever heard the saying Change is the only constant. Everyone, without doubt, goes through changes in their life, whether it is a physical state of aging or mental state of emotional maturity. However, some are afraid to make the conscious decision to move or they think it's too late to have a fresh start.

I have a friend named Jack. At the age of 37, he is a Senior Manager at one of the Big Four. He has a great salary, owns his own apartment and enjoys the fine things in life, but not without the heavy burdens that his job brings. On the surface, it looks like he has got life figured out. Yet when I once asked if he was happy with his work, he answered that he sometimes wished to quit his job to do something less stressful. But he'd become accustomed to this lifestyle and felt that it would be too late to give it up to achieve a new ambition.

For him, the risks are too high, so whether he can't abide his present job or not, he has to choose to suck it up.

You might have come to a similar situation as Jack's or you might be a Jack. You're now facing a wall. No matter what it is-the stress of your job or the terrible feeling, it's time that you had to decide whether you'll tear down that wall or continue to let it enclose you. I suggest pushing back the boundaries and breaking the fixed patterns. Why do you feel it's' too late to start over? That is simply because you're comparing yourself with others-younger or more successful individuals. In fact, you should compare yourself with the older version of you.

Don't become that person who lets life pass by only to regret it when you are making your way into old age. Don't let your little plateau(停滞不前)and waste away in the daily chores. Don't give up the potential you still have hidden and be locked away by your current state.

Now, you'd better bravely start going after the things you want to do, without abandoning your dreams, ambitions and responsibilities.

    28. What kind of people does Jack belong to according to the author?

    A. Those leading a happy life.         B. Those having an easeful career.

    C. Those thinking it's too late to change.    D. Those having high ambition to work

    29. What does the underlined word "abide" in paragraph 3 mean?

    A. Value.    B. Recommend  C. Understand.   D. Tolerate.

    30. What does the author advise us not to do?

    A. Let life stand stil1.      B. Enjoy the present job.

    C. Have a small goal in life.     D. Consider ourselves as a failure.

    31. Which is the best title for the text?

    A. Everyone Can Meet a Jack    B. Don't Try to Contro1 Yourself

    C. Never Think Change Is Too Late   D. You Should Make Alteration Earlier

    D

In British Bristol, 70 English women at once entered into legal "marriage" with dozens of trees in protest against their being cut down. They "married" the trees in a desperate attempt to prevent them from being cleared for construction of residential buildings worth £55 million in the forest. The British construction company has applied for the construction of 166 houses in Bristol, including luxury cottages. At the same time, the townspeople were especially angry at the fact that the application did not indicate the exact number of trees that are planned to be cut down. So, in order to attract the attention of the government, the activists organized an unusual wedding ceremony to save the forest.

The event took place at a park on Spike Island. The women who went there, dressed in wedding dresses, held photographs of the "suitors" in their hands. The celebration itself took place according to the classic storylinewith groomsmen and wedding vows. The organizer was John Tarleton, a professor at the Bristol Veterinary School, According to him, this action was supposed to demonstrate that tees are partners of people throughout their life.

The idea to hold such a ceremony came from Siobhan Kierans, who admitted that she came up with it by the story of women from the environmental movement Chipko, who chained themselves to trees in the 1970s to save them from destruction by logging companies.

The protesters said that Bristol needs mature trees more than luxury private housing. One of the "brides", Suzan Hackett, said, "To get married to a tree is a real honor. It's not a show. It's highly significant and symbolic."

    32. Why did the women marry trees?

    A. To protect the trees from going extinct.  B. To appeal to people to plant more trees.

    C. To blame the company for damaging trees.  D. To draw the authorities' attention to save the forest.

    33. What does the underlined word "suitors" in Paragraph 2 refer to?

    A. The men to marry.      B. The companies to build houses.

    C. The trees to be saved.      D. The buildings to be pulled down.

    34. What inspired Siobhan Kierans to create such an event?

    A. Cruel behavior of logging companies.  B. A previous environmental campaign.

    C. Movements of women fighting for rights.  D. Women chained to trees for their faults.

    35. What does Suzan Hackett think of the event?

    A. Meaningful.   B. Interesting.  C. Pioneering.     D. Emotional.

    第二节(共5小题;每小题2. 5, 满分12. 5分)

    阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项

Are you sitting more than ever?   36   You're probably sitting while reading this. Sometimes you sit when you are driving or attending a meeting. Other times you sit when you engage yourself in watching a movie or playing computer games. That's undoubtedly a lot of sitting. The fact is, the amount of time spent sitting has increased over time.   37

We know sitting too much is bad, and most of us naturally feel a little guilty after a long-time TV watching.   38   A study on nearly 8,000 adults suggests that there's a direct relationship between the time spent sitting and our risk of early death of any cause. As the total sitting time increases, so does the risk of early death.

"Sit less, move more" is what the Heart Association encourages us to do.   39   It is like telling someone to just "exercise" without telling them how. Exercise guidelines are always more practical. For example, the Center for Disease Control recommends adults do exercise for two hours and 30 minutes every week, plus muscle strengthening activities two or more days a week. We need similar guidelines for sitting.

40   "It would probably be like, for every 30 continuous minutes of sitting, stand up and move or walk for five minutes at a quick pace," Diaz, the lead researcher said, adding that the study has put us a step closer to the satisfying guidelines. But more researches are needed to confirm their approach.

    A. Now it's time to get up and move around.

    B. Take a moment to think about your sitting activities.

    C. Health experts also suggest exercising on a daily basis.

    D. But this guideline is just too simple and abstract to make a difference.

    E. As of today, average adult will spend 56-86% of their daily time sitting.

    F. But what exactly goes wrong when we park ourselves for nearly eight hours per day?

    G. To make up for the weakness, a research team is working on a more specific guideline.

    Price of a Miracle

Tess was an eight-year-old girl when she heard her mom and dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they were completely out of money.

Only a very costly operation could save him now and it was looking like there was no one to lend them the money. She heard Dad say to her tearful mom with desperation, “Only a miracle can save him now.”

Tess went to her bedroom and poured all the change she had saved out on the floor and counted it carefully:47 cents. She slipped out of home and made her way to Rexall’s Drug Store. She waited patiently for the pharmacist to give her some attention but he was too busy at this moment. Finally, she took a quarter from her pocket and banged it on the glass counter. That did it ! “And what do you want?” the pharmacist asked in an annoyed tone of voice. “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago Medical University whom I haven’t seen in ages,” he said without waiting for a reply to his question.

“Well, I want to talk to you about my brother,” Tess answered back in the same annoyed tone. “He’s really, really sick and I want to buy a miracle.”

“We don’t sell miracles here, little girl. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the pharmacist said, softening a little. “Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.” Tess answered with a blind faith.

The pharmacist’s brother was a well-dressed man. He stooped down and asked the little girl, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?” “I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up.

“I just know he’s really sick and Mom says he needs an operation. But my dad can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.”

    注意:

    1.续写词数应为150左右   2.请按如下格式作答。

    应用文写作

    Dear Daniel,

I am Li Hua, a new Senior3 student, who is bothered by the overwhelming pressure of my fast-paced life. I am writing to ask you for suggestions and help on the problems I am encountering.

One of the serious problems is that I find it quite challenging to concentrate on my study in class for lack of enough sleep. What’s worse, the high expectation from the teachers and my parents makes me extremely exhausted for the reason that I don’t want to let them down. What troubles me most is the intense relationship between my classmates, which definitely has an awful effect on my mood.

Faced with the problems above, I’m anxious to get your help. Could you please offer me some advice on how to solve these problems? Looking forward to your reply.

    Yours,

    Li Hua

    续写One possible version:

“How much do you have?” asked the man from Chicago. “47 cents!” Tess replied without any hesitation. To her surprise, the man said that he was a doctor and that it was a fair price for a miracle. Overcome with excitement, Tess grasped his hand, leading him to her home. With doubt and hope, Dad and Mom had Andrew checked by the man, who declared that he would perform an operation on the boy and promised it wouldn’t be long before he could pick himself up. Hearing his words, the whole family burst into tears of joy.

The operation was completed. Hardly had Andrew been sent back home when his parents went to thank the doctor with Tess, for they knew that 47 cents was a joke for an operation. They promised to save enough money to pay for the bill only to be told that Tess had paid for it. “It’s a fair deal,” the doctor explained to the parentsand then looked into Tess’s eyes, smiling, “47 cents was what it cost—plus the faith of a little girl.”
