Our school owned a boat named Jolie Brise. It was one of the most famous tall ships in the world and three times winner of the Fastnet Race. The boat was unusual: especially for a remote grammar school in Wiltshire, about as far away from the sea as it can get in England. Obviously, such a site didn't match its fame.
Mr Parish had originally intended to join the Royal Navy but ended up as a teacher at our school. Some pupils guessed that he still felt the call of the ocean-perhaps because his lessons were almost entirely devoted to navigation(航海). They argued that it was deeply unfair to learn about navigation but never actually go to sea. Then Mr. Parish, seeing a bunch of young people prepared to crew the boat, allowed them to sail her in return for working on the boat. And that was the beginning of the school sailing club.
By the time I arrived, the sailing club had grown. At weekends, we would work on her all day, cleaning and painting her, and collapse into sleeping bags on the floor at night. Then came the big day when a school sailing trip was announced. Its destination was Saint-Malo. But it also meant that we had to refit the ship by removing every piece of ballast(压舱物)and replacing the bilge water(底舱污水)before we were allowed to sail.
And I did learn the ropes on that school trip. I learned how to operate a ship in the high waves. I learned the meaning of teamwork and became a better team player. I also learned that the best fish is the one that you have caught and cooked yourself from a boat that you have rebuilt and sailed yourself.
    4. What was unusual about the boat Jolie Brise?
    A. It was in a perfect condition.
    B. Its lawful owner was Mr. Parish.
    C. It won glory for the Royal Navy.
    D. Its location wasn't as famous as it was.
    5. Why was the sailing club set up?
    A. The crew were selected.
    B. The boat needed workers.
    C. Mr. Parish tried to explore the sea.
D Students asked to practice navigation.
    6. What finally made the school sailing trip possible?
    A The club’s permission.
    B. Mr. Parish’s sailing experience.
    C. The students’ preparing the ship for it.
    D. The school’s offering financial support.
    7. What does the underlined phrase “learn the ropes” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Learn to cook.
    B. Master useful skills.
    C. Ensure sailing safety.
    D. Use ropes properly.
    C
Screens during meals rob kids of opportunities to improve language and communication skills (storytelling, making jokes, etc.), as well as to develop patience and even imagination as they entertain themselves waiting for food to arrive.
Meals are an opportunity to connect, to learn more about and enjoy each other. They strengthen the bonds that will bring benefits to the rest of our lives. We squander that opportunity when we stick a screen in front of our kids during dinner.
Of course, we all want to have enjoyable family meals, which is why I love Bruce Feiller's book "The Secrets of Happy Families", in which he devotes an entire chapter to ways to make them fun and meaningful for everyone---such as "fill in the blank" sentences you make up. Sharing something good and something challenging makes for pleasant conversations, too. And I've had fun playing Uno with my daughters until the food arrives in a restaurant.
The American Academy of Pediatrics (小儿科)also offers guidelines to help families manage children's screen time. The academy recommends avoiding digital media for children under 2, except for video-chatting, and limiting screen time to just one hour a day of high-quality programming for children ages 2 to 5.
Fundamentally, we all benefit from more human connection, not less — and that's especially true for children. Schools, airplane trips, most jobs, games, even "social" interaction were all once done without screens but now are filled with them. And while we have gained some advantages, including new connections, we have lost something fundamental, as well.
Less is always more when it comes to screens, even if they are effective at keeping kids quiet. But soon after complaining that they are "bored, ” kids have a natural tendency to fill the screenless void (空虚)with creative games, art, exploration and conversation. There are no studies that warn against having too many hours of those activities.
Let's all work harder to keep family meals special by getting rid of the iPads and nourishing our personal connections as we nourish our bodies.
    8. What's the author's attitude to the kids' staring at screens during meals?
    A. Disapproving. B. Favorable.
    C. Cautious. D. Unconcerned.
    9. What does the underlined word "squander" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A. Take. B. Waste.
    C. Expect. D. Create.
    10. What will kids do if they have no access to screens?
    A. Keep quiet.
    B. Refuse to eat.
    C. Feel bored all the time.
    D. Find ways to entertain themselves.
    11. What is the author's purpose in writing this passage?
    A. To introduce the iPads to the children.
    B. To stress the importance of family meals.
    C. To appeal for family meals without screens.
    D. To teach parents how to punish their children.
    D
It’s at this time of the year that marathon recovery, not marathon training, starts to take center stage.
Research indicates that the muscle damage from running a marathon can last up to two weeks. The research also indicates that muscle soreness(肌肉酸痛)is not a good indicator of muscular healing. In other words, just because you aren’t sore anymore doesn’t mean that you are fully healed. This is the danger for marathon runners: post-marathon muscular soreness fades after a few days but minor damage within the muscle cells remains. If you return to full training too soon — running more and faster than the tissues are ready for — you risk delaying full recovery and the chance to get ready for your next goal.
The solution, it appears, is to recognize(and accept)that the muscles will take a while to heal and to be prepared to take it easy for the first couple of weeks (even longer if you’re particularly sore after your marathon). While the research isn’t very promising when it comes to things to do to reduce soreness and aid healing, a couple of concepts appear to help. First, providing gentle blood flow to the area helps bring healing nutrients into the muscles and also helps to remove waste products and damaged tissue. Walking and gentle massage(按摩)can help, particularly in the first few days after a marathon. Once muscle soreness has significantly reduced (usually two to four days after the race), light jogging can commence. Just be mindful to run very slowly.
No runner wants to get super fit and then lose that during the recovery process. But since you must reduce your training load following your marathon, it can be difficult as to how much and how soon to insert running into your post-marathon training.
    12. When should marathon runners return to full training?
    A. About half a month after the competition.
    B. A few days after soreness disappears.
    C. Before the tissues recover completely.
    D. Before the next game draws closer.
    13. How can marathon runners reduce their muscle soreness?
    A. Through family care. B. By doing gentle exercise.
    C. Through medical treatment. D. By removing damaged tissue.
    14. Which of the following best explains “commence” underlined in paragraph 3?
    A. Fit. B. Heal. C. Start. D. Mend.
    15. What can be a suitable title for the text?
    A. Recovery after Marathon. B. Soreness with Sports.
    C. Healing Muscle Soreness. D. Reducing Training Load.

    D. Students asked to practice navigation.
    6. What finally made the school sailing trip possible?
    A. The club’s permission.
    B. Mr. Parish’s sailing experience.
    C. The students’ preparing the ship for it.
    D. The school’s offering financial support.
    7. What does the underlined phrase “learn the ropes” in paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Learn to cook.
    B. Master useful skills.
    C. Ensure sailing safety.
    D. Use ropes properly.
D 5. D 6. C 7. B
根据第一段的“The boat was unusual: especially for a remote grammar school in Wiltshire, about as far away from the sea as it can get in England. Obviously, such a site didn't match its fame.”(这条船不寻常:尤其是对于威尔郡的一所偏远的语法学校来说,它在英国离海最远的地方。
根据第二段的“They argued that it was deeply unfair to learn about navigation but never actually go to sea. Then Mr. Parish, seeing a bunch of young people prepared to crew the boat, allowed them to sail her in return for working on the boat. And that was the beginning of the school sailing club.”(他们争辩说,只学习航海知识却未能真正出海,这是非常不公平的。
根据第三段的“At weekends, we would work on her all day, cleaning and painting her, and collapse into sleeping bags on the floor at night. Then came the big day when a school sailing trip was announced.”(周末时,我们整天都为她忙碌,给她打扫卫生、上油漆,晚上我们就睡在地板上的睡袋里。
根据第四段的“I learned how to operate a ship in the high waves. I learned the meaning of teamwork and became a better team player. I also learned that the best fish is the one that you have caught and cooked yourself from a boat that you have rebuilt and sailed yourself.”(我学会了如何在大浪中驾驶船。
9 What does the underlined word "squander" in paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A Take. B. Waste.
    C. Expect. D. Create.
A 9. B 10. D 11. C
根据倒数第二段中的“But soon after complaining that they are "bored, ” kids have a natural tendency to fill the screenless void (空虚)with creative games, art, exploration and conversation.”可知,但在抱怨自己“无聊”之后不久,孩子们就自然而然地倾向于用创造性的游戏、艺术、探索和对话来填补无屏幕的空白,由此可知,当没有屏幕(电子产品)时,孩子们会想办法自我娱乐,故D项正确。
    【11题详解】
推理判断题。通读全文,特别是根据最后一段“Let's all work harder to keep family meals special by getting rid of the iPads and nourishing our personal connections as we nourish our bodies.
【点睛】词义猜测题的难度较大,对画线词上下文的理解是关键,例如本篇第2题,根据画线词前的“Meals are an opportunity to connect, to learn more about and enjoy each other.”
A 13. B 14. C 15. A

Research indicates that the muscle damage from running a marathon can last up to two weeks. 故选A。
根据文章第三段Walking and gentle massage(按摩)can help, particularly in the first few days after a marathon.
Once muscle soreness has significantly reduced (usually two to four days after the race), Just be mindful to run very slowly.
Research indicates that the muscle damage from running a marathon can last up to two weeks. The research also indicates that muscle soreness(肌肉酸痛)is not a good indicator of muscular healing可知,每年的这个时候,马拉松恢复,而不是马拉松训练,开始成为焦点。 故选A。
