Radzi was the first ut f the plane. He cllected his luggage frm the carusel and quickly made his way t the arrival lunge, hardly able t cntain his excitement at meeting his family after six years abrad.
He lked arund expectantly, hping t hear his vice being called ut but he heard n sweet vices. He turned rund and saw his parents, their dear faces shining with pride and pleasure but f his teenage twin sisters - nne. There was n sign f them.
"They must be hiding smewhere - they lve t play hide and seek."
He greeted his parents, and raised an eyebrw. His father smiled but said nthing. His mther was gushing all ver him, nt allwing him t say anything but kept n hugging him.
His father murmured, "Let's get hme. They're waiting fr us at hme."
Radzi smiled, relieved t knw they were at hme. He kept n talking abut his tur f Eurpe and he was rather puzzled whenever his parents exchanged glances. He dismissed them as his imaginatin.
They reached hme quick enugh as traffic was scarce that early mrning, it being a nn-wrking day.
He spied a lne figure at the dr. "Why ne? There shuld be tw." The twins were inseparable but it culd be that six years had made all the difference.
He jumped ut f the dr and as that lne figure rushed twards him, he thught it was Wani but she said she was Wati. S it must be. He really culd nt differentiate between the tw f them and they had fun deceiving him all the time.
"Where's Wani?"
"In yur bedrm."
"Wani, Bang's hme."
He walked int his rm and read the wrds `Welcme Hme, Dr Radzi!' Trust his twin sisters t be s dramatic!
After a late lunch, Wati invited him t g dwnstream t their favurite hideut. "Bang, I wish t be alne with yu withut Wani. Wani can wait her turn."
At the hideut, Wati became all businesslike. "Please, whatever I say, dn't interrupt. Just listen, please." There was a quiet desperate plea in her tne.
Radzi ndded fr it was quite unlike Wati t be s serius, just the ppsite f Wani.
In a quiet smbre tne she related what had happened t Wani. A year ag, Wani fell seriusly ill and was diagnsed with cancer. Everyne wanted t tell Radzi but Wani begged them nt t as he was sitting fr his finals and she did nt want him t lse all cncentratin and be s upset. Everyne had t prmise and even after his finals, she wrte him t tur Eurpe befre cming hme. She sent him phts f her with Wati, smiling, cheerful and healthy.
Radzi was stunned and asked in agny, "Hw culd she? Why did yu let her d it? Why? Why?"
Wati kept silent. All she culd d was t hug her brther, cmfrting him as he sbbed his heart ut. When the tears dried up, Wati held ut a letter. Radzi recgnised the handwriting.
He tk it and walked t the graveyard. Wani went with him, then left him t read the letter and t be alne in spirit with his belved sister.
"Bang, please dn't grief. Remember me as the healthy, cheerful, fun-lving sister. Treasure ur past mments and keep me always in yur heart. Wati is with yu. In her, yu see me. I want t be a dctr like yu. I can't but yu are ne nw. Be the best dctr I knw. I am prud f yu." As he read her letter, a strange peace fell n him. It was as thugh she was beside him, cmfrting him and hlding his hand. She was the elder and he the yunger.
He lked up and saw her smile. He lked arund, saw Wani and she smiled. In Wani, he saw Wati.
He walked up t Wani, tk her hand. Tgether, the brther and sister walked hme in the silence f the quiet evening.
