Winter is cold in some places. Many plants do not grow during winter. Some plants die. Snow and ice may cover the ground. It can be hard for animals to find food during winter. Animals get through this time in many ways.
Birds and butterflies can fly. Many of them do not stick around for the winter. Instead, they go to a place with nice weather. Then they come home in the spring. We call this migration. Migrating is a good way to avoid the cold.
Another good way to avoid the cold is to sleep through it. Many animals hide during the winter. Their bodies slow down. They save their energy. They do not eat. They live off of their fat. They do this until food returns. We call this hibernation. Snakes, frogs, and bears hibernate.
Some animals store food in their homes. They do not sleep all winter, but they do much less. They live on what they saved in the summer and fall. This is what squirrels, beavers, and raccoons do. Skunks do this too.
Other animals live a hard life in winter. They do not leave. They do not hide. They must survive(生存). Sometimes nature helps them out. Some animals grow thicker fur in the winter. Other animals change colour. The arctic fox is brown in the summer. His fur turns white in the winter.
Winter may be pretty. It is nice to see snow on the trees. But it is dangerous too. People are also at risk. You can get frost bitten(冻伤) or worse. How do you beat the winter? Do you wear a thick coat? Do you stay inside? Or do you live somewhere warm?
39.Which of these animals sleep through the winter?
    A.Squirrels. B.Snakes. C.Skunks. D.Butterflies.
40.Which is NOT the way for animals to go through winter?
A.Sleeping all winter. B.Storing food in homes.
C.Wearing thick fur coats. D.Changing their colours.
41.What is the main idea of this text?
A.Animals do funny and interesting things.
B.Animals survive the winter in many ways.
C.We must prepare for the dangers of winter.
D.Most plants do not grow during the wintertime.

Jack London, one of America’s major writers of adventure tales, was born in California in 1876. During his life, London worked at many jobs. His broad life experiences would become the background for his writing.
London loved to read. As a teenager, he spent many hours educating himself at the Oakland, California, public library. He attended college at the University of California at Berkeley, but he stayed for only six months. He thought Berkeley was “not lively enough” and wanted to do something more exciting. London wrote stories about working people and the hard times they had making a living. He knew their problems first hand. He worked as a sailor, rancher, factory employee, railroad hobo, and gold prospector, to name just a few of his many jobs.
London grew up near the waterfront in Oakland. He loved the water. When he was fifteen years old, he bought a small sailboat called a sloop. Later he sailed to Japan on a schooner, which is a much larger sailing boat. Like many people of the time, London caught the Klondike Gold Rush Fever. In l897, he headed for Alaska. He didn’t find gold, but he discovered something even more valuable. He discovered that people enjoyed listening to the stories he made up with his vivid imagination. London entertained the miners with story after story. Later, using his experiences during the Gold Rush, he created many more colourful stories. London resolved to live a full, exciting life. Each day, he pushed himself. Once London decided to be a writer, nothing could stop him. His goal was to write at least one thousand words every day. He refused to stop even when he was sick. In eighteen years, the writer published fifty-one books and hundreds of articles. He was the best-selling and highest-paid author of his day. Many people also considered him to be the best writer.
White Fang and The Call of the Wild are his most famous stories and are about surviving in the Alaskan wilderness. Readers can enjoy Jack London’s energy and his talent for telling wonderful stories each time they open one of his novels.
42.When did Jack London discover he first had a talent for storytelling?
A.When he was a teenager. B.When he went to Alaska.
C.When he went to college. D.When he worked as a sailor.
43.What do you know about the sloop and schooner?
A.They are both types of boats.
B.They were both built in Japan.
C.They were both made in the early 1900s.
D.Jack London borrowed money to buy both of them.
44.Why did Jack London not complete college?
A.He was hired to sail to Japan.
B.He went to Alaska to make money.
C.He thought school life was very boring.
D.He had to spend much of his time writing.
45.What does the underlined word “resolved” in Paragraph 3 mean?
    A.Accepted. B.Decided. C.Hated. D.Moved.

Want better odds? Some people believe that finding a heads-up penny is good luck. The odds(几率) that a found penny will be heads up are one in two.

Good-luck seekers(探求者) can also break a wishbone. Two people hold a wishbone(如愿骨), make a wish, then break it. It is said that the person who gets the bigger piece will get his or her wish. The odds of getting the bigger piece are one in two.
According to Irish tradition, finding a four-leaf clover will bring you good luck. But just how hard is it to find one? For every ten thousand clovers you look at, the odds are that one of them will have four leaves instead of three.

When I was a 4-year-old girl, I once found a four-leaf clover in our backyard. I knew that four-leaf clovers are rare, but I didn’t know how “lucky” I was to find one until I read What Are the Odds. If I had known, I might have been more careful with it. I lost it soon afterwards — along with a lucky key chain and a lucky coin.
It’s fun to pretend(自称) that things like four-leaf clovers can bring us good luck. But I believe that we make our own good luck with hard work. Sometimes our hard work leads to success in ways we don’t expect. And often we are “lucky” when someone else takes the time to give us the help we need.
It’s fun to find a four-leaf clover and hope for good luck. But it’s more fun when we work hard and do our best and when we lend a helping hand to others — we can make true magic.
46.The odds of finding a bigger piece of wishbone are ________.
    A.1 in 2 B.3 in 4 C.1 in 1,000 D.1 in 10,000
47.Why does the writer write about pennies and wishbones in the beginning of passage?
A.To help readers to get good luck.
B.To introduce culture about Irish people.
C.To show how rare to find four-leaf clovers.
D.To tell ways to use pennies and wishbones.
48.What did the writer do with the four-leaf clover in the backyard?
A.She lost it. B.She gave it to others.
C.She put it into a book. D.She made a key chain with it.
49.From the book What Are the Odds we can know ________.
A.how to be lucky B.how to find four-leaf clovers
C.the ways to use four-leaf clovers D.the odds of finding four-leaf clovers

    十二、阅读填表
    Think you’re smart?
Do you think you are smart? In fact, smart people have several things in common. These include being self-aware, high self-control and even a funny personality, Business Insider reported. You may think these traits (特点) come from personal experience or habits. But in fact, there is some scientific evidence behind them.
    Being self-aware
Smart people are better able to admit (承认) when they don’t know something, according to a study by Cornell University in the US. The study found that the less smart you are, the more you overestimate (高估) yourself.
In one experiment, for example, students were asked to estimate their scores after taking a test. The students with lower scores overestimated the number of questions they’d gotten right. Meanwhile, those with higher scores underestimated how many questions they’d gotten right.
    High self-control
Scientists have found a link between self-control and intelligence. In a 2009 study published in the journal Psychological Science, participants (参与者) had to choose between two rewards: a smaller amount of money that they could get at once or a larger amount of money that they could get later.
The results showed that people who chose to receive the larger amount of money at a later date scored higher on intelligence tests (智力测试). These people had more self-control.
    Being really funny
Do smart people have a better sense of humor? Scientists at the University of New Mexico may think so. One of their studies found that people who wrote funnier cartoon captions (解说词) scored higher on verbal (词语的) intelligence tests. Verbal intelligence is believed to be linked to the whole intelligence.
    Other trails
Besides what we’ve talked above, scientists also find that smart people can easily feel what someone else is thinking or feeling and are more willing to listen to others’ suggestions. They are always curious about many things. So, why not have a check if you are smart?
    Test ____71____ smart you are

    91.范文:
Hi, everyone! We all know that on December 22, 2021, an earthquake happened in Tianning District, Changzhou City. What should you do if this happens? An earthquake is dangerous but there are things you can do to protect yourself.
First stay calm as an earthquake begins. If you are inside when the earthquake starts, cut down the power as soon as possible. Then you can go under a table or a bed. You need to have something strong around you to protect you from falling objects. Especially you must protect your head well. Do not stand near walls or windows and stay out of the kitchen. The kitchen is dangerous because there are so many glass objects. If you are outside, don’t return to get things. After all, life is the most important. In the process of our escape, we must be strong and not give up easily.
    That’s all. Thank you.
