Zhu Dejun抯 first job after graduating from college was as a road design engineer at an institute in his hometown, Alshaa League, North Chin抯 Inner Mongolia autonomous region. In 2011, when Zhu was conducting a road survey along with his colleagues, he saw a plant that he didn抰 recognize. Later, Zhu learned that the plant was a saxaul tree which is an excellent tree species for sand fixation and afforestation(造林) in
desert areas. It抯 commonly seen, though easily ignored. Known as a desert guardian, a fully grown saxaul tree can hold together a 10-square-meter patch of desert land, according to Zhu.
Zhu quit his job at the design institute in 2014 and joined a nonprofit organization, the Society of
Entrepreneurs and Ecology Conservation, or SEE, in the same year, concentrating on tackling desertification.
The organization, devoted to ecological protection and social responsibility, was located in the Alshaa League of Inner Mongolia. During the past eight years, Zhu has been leading a team from SEE to plant saxaul trees in sandy areas in Alshaa League and other places of Inner Mongolia.
In 2014, the SEE launched a project titled 搊ne million saxaul trees?, aiming to reach that number from
2014 to 2023, turning the desert of more than 133,330 hectares back into a satisfying ecosystem. By the end of 2018, half of the organization抯 goal had been achieved.
In 2016, Ant Finance cooperated with SEE to introduce the Ant Forest platform, not only encouraging
people to choose 揳 low-carbon way? of shopping, traveling and living, but also to help control desertification.
Through the participation of a greater number of online users, who grow virtual trees, the SEE Foundation,
set up in 2008, has been providing subsidies(补助金)for local herdsmen and farmers while also offering technological support to plant saxaul trees in desert areas. Now, Zhu is the head of the foundation抯 project to
fight desertification. He also gives lectures about saxaul trees and the fight against desertification at schools,
hoping to raise awareness among young people.

    B. He joined a nonprofit organization.
    C. He found ways to fight desertification.
    D. He focused on road design engineering.

    A. They are easily taken care of.
    B. They can grow fast in deserts.
    C. They are perfect for holding water.
    D. They can fight desertification effectively.
    26. What did SEE do to control desertification?
    A. They teamed up with Ant Finance.
    B. They planted one million saxaul trees.
    C. They held online lectures on desertification.
    D. They encouraged donation from online users.
    27. How can online users help Zhu抯 team?
    A. By providing subsidies.

Germany抯 factories, which power Europe抯 economy, produced less during September than at any time in
the past two years, which experts say could be an indicator of an approaching European recession(经济衰退).
The S&P Global Manufacturing Purchasing Managers? Index, or S&P Global PMI, found that Germany抯 manufacturing activity dropped to 47.8 in September, from 49.1 in August. The survey said the drop in factory output was due to customers either putting off or canceling orders because of fast-rising prices caused by more expensive fuel bills.
Joe Hayes, a senior economist at S&P Global, said while the whole world is in the middle of a
manufacturing decline, Europe appears to be at the slowdown抯 center. 揚roduction fell at a rate which has only been larger during crisis periods,? Hayes told The Telegraph. 揘ew orders also fell at a rapid pace, reflecting the hesitancy among clients to buy goods at expensive prices.
The analysis also showed that Europe抯 other manufacturing powerhouse, France, is struggling to remain
competitive. The S&P Global PMI said French companies? order books shrank during September, with around one-third of businesses reporting customers had canceled orders because of rising prices.
Phil Smith, an associate director at S&P Global, said Europe is experiencing 揳 continuous downturn?. He
added that producers had been 揷oming under pressure from a deepening drop in demand as well as an energy-led rise in cost inflation(通货膨胀)?.
    28. What happened in Europe this September?
    A. Factories? efficiency rose in Europe.
    B. Factories? production dropped in Germany.
    C. Customers? purchase continuously increased.
    D. Fuel bills? prices constantly decreased.
    29. What is the possible reason for the fall?
    A. The whole world is experiencing recession.
    B. Factories fail to remain competitive.
    C. Expensive fuel bills lead to a drop in demand.
    D. Customers hesitate to buy cheap goods.
    30. What does the underlined word 搒hrank? mean in paragraph 4?
    A. Expanded. B. Faded C. Changed. D. Decreased.
    31. What is Phil Smith抯 attitude towards European economy?
    A. Negative. B. Hopeful. C. Positive. D. Unconcerned.

A 搒ecretive? new species of frog has been discovered on the forest floor in India抯 Western Ghat mountain range. Named the starry dwarf frog after the markings on its dark brown back, it is just 2 centimeters long.
The frog, whose closest relatives are a group of species native to India and Sri Linka, is the only member of
an ancient lineage (血统)dating back to millions of years ago, according to researchers from India and the US. It is unclear whether the species is descended from African or Asian frogs.
A group of Indian and US researchers first came across the local species hidden in leaf-litter as part of a
wider project to look for new frogs, lizards and snakes in the richly biodiverse region and stored it in a jar for later study. Genetic testing and a closer look at its shape, colouring and other features has shown that it doesn抰 match any existing species.
Kartik Shanker of the Indian Institute of Science, who helped design the study, says while it is common to
find new frogs in India, this one needs to be noticed. 揟his particular species not just is a new species, but also belongs to a new genus (属), and that makes it a little more special,? says Shanker.
The number of known species of frog identified in India has climbed from around 200 to above 400 over
the past two decades. While many species new to science are frequently immediately sorted as endangered, it is too early to say whether the starry dwarf frog is threatened. 揟hey are very secretive,? says Shanker, adding that the team didn抰 know the size of its population. The frog is active at night and lives near water.
Habitat loss is a serious risk to frogs in tropical forests around the world, alongside threats such as a deadly
fungus(真菌)that has been killing off amphibians(两栖动物)for the past four decades. But the new species was found in a reserved forest, meaning it will enjoy a degree of protection by Indian government agencies.
    32. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
    A. The species was discovered by tourists.
    B. The species was found in a rich region.
    C. The species was finally set free.
    D. The species was further studied.
    33. What can we say about the new frog?
    A. It is in small quantities.
    B. It is an endangered species.
    C. It is well worth attention.
    D. It is related to African or Asian frogs.
    34. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
    A. Habitat loss is the chief threat to frogs.
    B. The new species may face less dangers.
    C. Tropical forests in India are all under protection.
    D. The Indian government determines to save frogs.
    35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
    A. A rare frog species protected in India
    B. A rise in species of frog seen in India
    C. A secretive frog species discovered in India
    D. A risk of habitat loss for frogs removed in India
Anger is the most destructive emotion. When you are angry, you make ill-considered decisions that you
will probably regret. 36 How to stop being angry? Here are ways that you can reduce the causes of anger.
You need to change your attitude to the way the world works. You have to accept that sometimes things
go wrong and that people are not always lovely and perfect. 37 So realizing others may behave in an
unproper way will help you prevent your annoyance.
38 . There are occasions when anger can be directed in such a way as to achieve great things. Martin
Luther King was angry about the lack of civil rights and Gandhi was angry about British domination. They both used that anger to motivate themselves to fight against injustice.
It is beneficial to stop trying to manage your anger. Anger management used to be promoted as a way of
dealing with anger. 39 . A better way of facing anger is to identify the root cause. Once you know why you
get mad, it is possible to deal with the cause.
Don抰 take the easy way when you get angry. We would like to throw something, hit something, or scream when we are angry. A reaction like that is the easy way. It is much harder to stay calm, walk away and act normally. That, however, is what you must do if you are to stop anger from becoming your master. By
learning control, you can become a much calmer and less violent person. 40
    A. Don抰 regard anger as a bad emotion
    B. The trick is to manage your anger well.
    C. Recognize that anger is something you can control.
    D. However, all that happens is that anger is overcontroled.
    E. You will also regret the language spoken without thought.
    F. You will be better liked and better placed to influence others.
    G. The actions of other people can be a significant cause of anger.

    The Leap
Once a twelve-year-old boy was traveling around the world by sea. His father was the captain of the ship. Now, the ship was sailing home at last. It was a pleasant day. All the passengers were on the deck(甲板).
A monkey was making funny faces at the passengers. It became funnier as more passengers came closer, enjoying its tricks. Suddenly the monkey ran towards the captain抯 son and took his hat. It then put the hat on its own head. Soon after that, it climbed up the tall pole with two crossbeams(横梁)that supported the sails(帆)
    on the ship.
Everyone laughed, but the boy was not sure whether to laugh or cry. It had come as a surprise. The monkey sat on the first crossbeam of the pole, took off the hat and began to tear it.
The hat was too important for the boy. So he shouted with extreme anger, 揧ou terrible creature! Return my
hat or you are going to pay for it.? He went after the monkey on the pole, which continued to climb higher.
揑 am not going to forgive you,? the boy shouted, as he climbed higher and higher. After a while, the monkey stretched itself to its full length and hung what remained of the hat on the end of the second crossbeam. Then it climbed to the very tip of the pole and sat there, making fun of the boy.
The distance from the pole to the end of the crossbeam, where the hat was, was about two meters. To reach
the hat, the boy had to let go of the pole. Everyone froze with fear when they saw the boy had stepped onto the crossbeam without support. One wrong step, and he would fall hard to the board of the ship, which would lead to death. The only solution was to jump into the water. However, the boy didn抰 realize the danger, as his mind was focused only on getting the hat.

    Dear David,
I’m just writing to say congratulations on your fantastic speech last Friday. It was not an easy task and I’m glad it turned out to be a great success.

Just then the captain came on deck, carrying a gun to shoot seabirds. He was surprised at the sight of the huge crowd. Then he looked up,only to find his son likely to fall at any moment. A sudden wave of panic swept over him. But he managed to pretend to be calm. “Hey, Dad is here! Be brave and jump into the water!” Hearing the words, the boy hesitated before he stuttered, “But…” The captain added. “Trust me! I’ll get you out immediately.” Finally the body agreed and jumped off. At the same time, the captain, along with some sailors, dashed into the water, rescued the boy and brought him back on board. They pressed his stomach and water came out of his mouth and nose. Then he began to breathe.
Seeing his son wet but alive, the captain breathed a sigh of relief. A burst of applause and cheers broke out from the crowd. Though he had an outward appearance of calm, his heart was pounding with nervousness. Never in his wildest dream did he imagine he was so close to losing his beloved son. At the same time, he was proud of his son for making a wise choice in face of danger. He kept his son company for a long while until his son felt better.
    36. E 根据前文“When you are angry, you make ill-considered decisions that you will probably regret.”

    39. D 根据前文“Anger management used to be promoted as a way of dealing with anger.

    One possible version:
Just then the captain came on deck. He was surprised at the sight of the huge crowd. Then he looked up, only to find his son likely to fall at any moment. A sudden wave of panic swept over him. But he managed to pretend to be calm. “Hey, Dad is here! Be brave and jump into the water!” Hearing the words, the boy hesitated before he stuttered, “But…” The captain added, “Trust me! I’ll get you out immediately.” Finally the boy agreed and jumped off.
The moment the boy stood up, he threw himself into his father’s arms, saying in a gentle voice “Thank you, Dad!” with tears of gratitude and happiness rolling down his cheeks.

    (Text 1)
M: The red car with two doors is nice. And I like the color.
W: Don’t forget we have three kids.
M: That’s true. I guess we need the white one with four doors.
    (Text 2)
W: Pacific Travel Company, Jane speaking. How can I help you?
M: Hello, it’s Stuart Gould here. I’ve booked a two-day group tour with your company and I need to make some changes to the original booking.
    (Text 3)
W: You don’t look very well. Is there anything I can do?
M: No thanks, maybe I’ll go home early today.
W: Yes, I think you should. But don’t forget to tell our manager first.
    (Text 4)
W: We’re having the meeting on Monday. That’s the day after tomorrow. Can you give me the report by Sunday?
M: OK. I’ll try to finish it as soon as possible.
    (Text 5)
M: I’m worried about the exam in chemistry.
W: Me, too. Mrs. Smith always sets a hard paper, doesn’t she?
M: You’re right, and I failed last time.
    (Text 6)
W: How about eating out tonight for a change?
M: It’s an idea, I suppose. Where shall we go?
W: There’s a new Italian place which has just opened.
M: That might be worth a try and we can take the bus.
    W: Let’s walk there. It’s not far.
    M: OK.
W: And we could invite Amelia and Rob, too.
M: But it’s too far for them. They’d need to drive there. Besides, Rob has a flight to London tonight.
    (Text 7)
M: Linda! I was looking for you. I wanted to ask you what you are planning to do this weekend.
W: What’s up, Doug? I was supposed to watch a concert with my sister, but she canceled our appointment at the last minute. Now I have no plans.
M: We are planning to go climbing in the Azusa Mountains on Saturday. You really must join us.
W: That sounds great, but I haven’t climbed for a while. I’ll get tired easily.
M: All you have to do is walk and enjoy the scenery of the mountains along the way. The mountain is not that tall. There’s no way you can’t do it. Plus, we are going to have a delicious picnic at the top of the mountain.
W: OK. I certainly love picnics. I’m starting to get excited about climbing now! I’d better get a good pair of shoes.
    (Text 8)
M: Hey, what about these ties? Which do you prefer, the green one or the black one?
W: I prefer the black one but I think you’ll take the red tie I saw in Camden Market. The color suits your jacket perfectly.
    M: Yeah.
W: What do you think of this dress?
M: It would look really good with high heels.
W: High heels? I don’t like high heels much. I find them really uncomfortable.
M: I guess it would look good with the shoes you’re wearing. Are you getting the dress?
W: I’m not sure … I’d like to look in the market first before I decide whether to buy it or not.
M: I’d rather go for a coffee than look at more clothes now.
    (Text 9)
    W: What are you reading?
M: An article about this guy … Frane … Selak. They’ve called him the unluckiest man in the world. It looks like he’s had an unbelievable life.
    W: Unbelievable? How?
M: Well … It started in the 1960s. He says he was on a train that came off the tracks and crashed into a river — he survived but the other 17 people died!
    W: Lucky.
M: Frane did break his arm, though. Anyway, the next year he was flying on a small plane, which also crashed. Just as it was about to crash, one of the doors opened — the article says it had a fault — and he was sucked out. He escaped unhurt but nobody on the plane survived.
    W: That’s unbelievable!
M: I know. Then a few years later, Frane was in a bus accident. There was heavy rain and the bus lost control on the wet road and crashed into a river. He survived, although 20 people drowned. Then Frane was in a car that caught fire while he was driving it on the motorway. He managed to get out with seconds to spare before the fuel tank exploded.
W: I don’t know whether he’s unlucky or extremely lucky, but I don’t think I ever want to travel with this guy.
    (Text 10)
W: About two years ago I went with my class on our first school trip — five days in Paris! There were about thirty of us and four teachers. We all went in one big coach from our school in London. The teachers told us to be at school at four thirty in the morning. Everyone was there on time, but the coach didn’t arrive until five o’clock and we didn’t leave until five thirty! We were very cold and tired.
Anyway, the coach was very comfortable and we watched a DVD and listened to some music on the journey. We had some sandwiches and drinks with us, so we went straight to Paris without stopping. The hotel was very old, but our room was nice and the bed was great! I shared the room with three other girls.
When we went shopping I tried to practice my French a few times but sometimes I didn’t know the right words and spoke in English instead! The shops were great — I bought lots of presents, such as a dress for my mother, a bag for my dad and a T-shirt for my little sister!
I think what I enjoyed most was the boat trip. I took lots of photos of my friends and the wonderful art galleries. I was sad to leave Paris. I had a lovely time there.
