The Leshan Giant Buddha is a statue f Maitreya in sitting psture. The Buddha lies t the east f Leshan City, Si-chuan Prvince, facing Min River, Qingyi River, and Dadu River. In December, 1996, the Buddha was included by the UNESCO n the list f the Wrld Heritage Sites.
The cnstructin f the statue began in the year 713 in the Tang Dynasty, and finished in the year 803. The Buddha is 71 meters high. The 9-meter-lng instep is big enugh fr ne hundred peple t sit n and the 24-meter-wide shulder is large enugh t be a basketball playgrund.
A mnk called Hai Tng is cnnected with the Buddha frever. At that time, wild waters brught ut many bat accidents and peple just put the disaster dwn t the presence f a water spirit. S Hai Tng decided t make a statue beside the river thinking that the Buddha wuld bring the water spirit under cntrl. After 20 years’ begging frm dr t dr, he finally cllected enugh mney fr the plan. When sme lcal gvernment fficials tried t get this amunt f mney, Hai Tng said that they culd get his eyeballs but nt the mney raised fr the Buddha.
