    Difficult point : How to use the noun clauses in real situation

    Major steps:

    Step 1 Presentation

    1Teacher ask students to read the passage and find more noun clauses from the reading passage and state the types of noun clauses and then summarise the usages of the conjunctions—what and that.

    2Rewrite each of the following sentences using noun clauses.

    1.The advisor talked about maintaining reasonable expectations when studying abroad. His words were quite helpful to May.(what)

    2.Students have to write countless research papers as part of their coursework. This was not something that Chen Hao was ready for.(that)

    3.Who will be the successful applicant for the summer job at the law firm? This is the question.(who)

    4.Exposure to another culture and its people can give exchange students great insights into the world. This is an advantage of studying abroad.(that)

    5.Schools in the States are quite multicultural, with students and teachers from many different ethnic backgrounds. This impressed Liu Yang.(It...that)

    3Teacher help to conclude the grammar- noun clauses and introduce the usage of the grammar

    名词性从句

    名词性从句相当于名词,可分别作主句的主语、表语、宾语和同位语。因此,名词性从句可分为主语从句、表语从句、宾语从句和同位从句。

      () 引导名词性从句的连接词

      1. 连接代词:who whose whom what which。有词义,在从句中担任成分,如主语、表语、宾语、或定语等。

      2. 连接副词:when where why how。有词义,在从句中担任成分,作状语。

      3. 连接词:that whether if as ifthat 无词义,在从句中不担任成分,有时可省略;if (whether) as if虽有词义,但在从句中不担任成分。

    注意:连接代词与连接副词在句中不再是疑问句,因而从句中谓语不用疑问式。连接代词与连接副词在从句充当句子成分,连接词whether if(是否)as if(好象)在从句中不充当句子成分,只起连接作用。根据句义,如果连接代词与连接副词,whetherif as if都用不上时,才用that作连接词(that本身无任何含义)

      ()主语从句

      1、主语从句在复合句作主语。

       Who will go is not important.

      2、用it作形式主语,主语从句放在句末。

      It doesn't matter so much whether you will come or not.

      3that引导主语从句时,不作成分,不能省略。

    That he suddenly fell ill last week made us surprised.

    4. it形式主语的常用句型

    It + be + 及物动词的过去分词+从句

    It is said that… 据说……

    It is reported that… 据报道……

    It is believed that… 人们相信……

    It + be+名词+从句

    It is a fact that… 事实是……

    It is good news that… ……是个好消息

    It +be+形容词+从句

    It is necessary that… 有必要……

    It is important that… 重要的是……

    It seems/appears/happens/… +主语从句

      ()表语从句

      1、表语从句在复合句中作表语,位于系动词之后。

        The question was who could go there.

      2、表语从句的引导词与主语从句和宾语从句的引导词基本相同,但是if不能引导表语从句。

    3、连接词 that, whether引导表语从句,连接词一般不能省略。

    The question is whether we should recommend the goods to the shopkeeper.

    4、连接副词when, where, why, how 引导表语从句,连接词在从句中作状语、表语。

    That was how Peter got his bachelor's degree.

    5、连接代词 what, which, who, whom, whose引导表语从句,连接词在从句中可作主语、表语、宾语或定语。

    That's what we want to purchase.

    6、有时 because, as if, as though 也可以引导表语从句。

    It looks as if you have made full preparations for the final exam.

      ()宾语从句

      1、宾语从句在复合句中作宾语。引导宾语从句的连词that一般可省略。

       I hope (that) everything is all right.

      2、介词之后的宾语从句,可用whichif连接,要分别用what whether

      I'm interested in whether you've finished the work..

      I'm interested in what you've said.

      3whetherif都可以引导宾语从句,常可互换。但下面情况不能互换。

      ①宾语从句是否定句时,只用if,不用whether

      I wonder if it doesn't rain.

      ②用if 会引起误解,就要用whether

      Please let me know whether you want to go.(此句如果把whether改成if,容易当成条件句理解)

      ③宾语从句中的whether or not直接连用,就不能换成if;不直接连用,可换。

      I don't know whether or not the report is true.

      I don't know whether/ if the report is true or not.

      ④介词后的宾语从句要用whether引导。whether 可与不定式连用。whether也可引导主语从句、表语从句、同位语从句,还可引导让步状语从句,以上均不能换成if。但引导条件从句时,只能用if,而不能用whether

      It depends on whether we have enough time.

      They don't know whether to go there.

    Please come to see me if you have time.

    4、连接副词when, where, why, how引导宾语从句,连接词在从句中作状语。

    We haven't decided when we'll go hiking.

    我们还未决定何时去远足。

    5、连接代词 what, which, who, whom, whose引导宾语从句时,在从句中起代词的作用,可在从句中作主语、宾语、表语或定语。

    I don't know who will accompany you to the concert tonight.

    我不知道今晚谁将陪你去音乐会。

      ()同位语从句

      同位语从句在句中作某一名词的同位语,一般位于该名词(如:news fact idea suggestion promise)之后,说明该名词的具体内容。

      I have no idea when he will be back.

    The fact that he had not said anything surprised everybody.

    Justification: In this way, teachers introduces the situation in which the grammar can be used. Students will have a better understanding of the grammar and learn it easily.

    Step 2 Practice

    Activity 1: Students finish the exercise on PPT. Teacher will ask them to check the right answer on PPT.

    Activity 2: Pair work. Students read the dialogue with their partners and then change roles. Teacher will point out some mistakes and explain them carefully.

    Justification: Through this part, students can practice the dialogue in pairs and consolidate the grammar.

    Step 3 Production

    Group task: Students will be divided in to several groups. They can talk about the Xie Lei’s experience by completing the following sentences with your own words.  Then share the results with whole class. Students are encouraged to use the grammar when talking.

    Justification: Students will learn to use the grammar in a proper way through those activities.

    Step 4 Summary and homework

    1. Summary

    Students should act as an assistant to conclude what they have learned in this class, and then the teacher will make a summary together with students.

    (Justification: Reviewing the important knowledge in this lesson can deepen students' impression and form good study habits)

    2. Homework

    Finish the exercise in PPT.

    (Justification: Retelling can help students sort out the course content, and the exercise can help students master the grammar better.)
