1. TrueCar.com
Top dealers compete for your business by offering lower prices. TrueCar spends a lot of money and resources on making sure the entire car renting experience is simple and straightforward. If you’re in the market for a new car, give this site a try first.
TrueCar’s network checks many of the prices in your area and gets you the best price for the car you’re looking for.
2. Carvoy.com
It offers more control by allowing you to “build your car” and select your rental plan. The “build your car” option is one of the better options for those looking to add on features to their car. A former teacher who went on to join the navy discovered the impact his small act of kindness had on one student thanks to a chance meeting years later.
Sharing the story online, the man said while teaching science in 2014 and 2015, there was one girl who sat at the front of the class and was “filled with typical middle school anxiety”. She was quiet and “kept to herself”, but was always writing in a notebook during lessons.
He said, “I decided to look over her shoulder and see what she was writing. ‘I suck. I’m ugly. I’m stupid. No one likes me. I hate me. Etc.’ Without thinking, I snatched the notebook from her and started writing in it ‘you’re great; you’re beautiful; you’re intelligent; you’re loved,’ the opposite of everything she wrote, then handed it back.” He said neither of them made a big deal of it at the time, but she slowly started opening up to him, talking more and coming out of her shell in class.
Fast forward a few years, the teacher says he’s now in the navy and gets talking to a woman when serving on the other side of the country and that they discover they are from the same area. They realize he had taught at the same school her cousin attended and she asked if he remembered teaching her. After telling the story about the notebook, the woman replied, “It is you. She still has that notebook. She looks at it time to time to get her through the tough times.”
He wrote, “I was amazed. I almost started crying right there. Teachers always talk about how rare it is to hear from students in the future about how they impacted them. I only taught for a few years but I really tried and really cared. Even though that path didn’t turn out how I had planned, it’s humbling to know that I did some good in that time.”
4. What attracted the attention of the teacher?
A. The girl sitting at the front of the class was active.
B. The girl kept writing in her notebook during lessons.
C. The girl didn’t speak to her classmates in class.
D. The girl was ugly and no one liked her.
5. What do the underlined words mean in Paragraph 3?
A. No longer hiding in the shell. B. No longer feeling frightened.
C. No longer feeling bored. D. No longer keeping silent.
6. Why did the author feel amazed?
A. Because he learned how he had impacted a former student.
B. Because his former job did not meet his expectations.
C. Because he only taught for a few years but he succeeded.
D. Because he met the cousin of a student he taught a few years ago.
7. What can we infer from the passage?
A. Students usually don’t communicate with their teachers.
B. Almost all students have experienced middle school anxiety.
C. Encouragement can make a great difference.
D. It’s typical that a student lacks confidence.
C
According to Jim Coan, a psychologist from the University of Virginia, holding hands with someone you trust can have a positive effect on your health. Why? Researchers have shown in their studies that the simple act of touch can reduce stress and even lower heart rate.
In a study, Jim and his colleagues brought couples into the lab, and then put one of them in an fMRI machine to scan the activity in their brains. While scanning them, the participants looked at a screen, and on a series of tests, they either saw a green circle or a red “X”. A green circle meant that the test would end shortly and nothing else would happen. A red “X” meant that in a few seconds, there was a chance that they would receive a mild electric shock on their leg. The shock wasn’t painful, but it wasn’t exactly comfortable either.
During some of these tests, participants were in the fMRI scanner alone; during others, a researcher came in and held their hand; and on a final set of tests, their romantic partner came in and held their hand. Jim and colleagues found that when participants thought they might be getting a shock, they had a lower stress response in their brains when holding their romantic partner’s hand than in the other two conditions. And the happier the couples said they were in their relationships, the more the romantic partner’s hand lessened (减弱) the brain’s response to the shock. This study suggests that when we’re stressed, holding a loved one’s hand can reduce that stress.
The research also suggests that touch has immediate and positive effects on babies. Skin-to-skin contact can reduce crying, stress, and improve sleep. These effects can be long-lasting: adults, held a lot when they were babies, are the most likely to be healthy and well-adjusted — in fact, the more they were carried in babyhood, the better they adjust in adulthood.
8. How would a participant probably feel when seeing a red “X”?
A. Nervous. B. Excited. C. Hopeful. D. Painful.
9. Why did researchers do sets of tests in the study?
A. To make sure the study results are correct.
B. To compare brain activities in different cases.
C. To test the relationships between couples.
D. To check the functions of the fMRI scanner.
10. According to the last paragraph, what may the writer agree with?
A. Babies should be held and carried as much as possible.
B. Babies’ problems can be solved mainly by touching.
C. The effects that touching has on babies don’t last long.
D. Adults who were not held as babies can’t adjust to society.
11. Which of the following might be the most suitable title for the text?
A. Touch Improves Brain Function B. Touch Happens Everywhere
C. Touch Helps Form Good Habits D. Touch Makes a Big Difference
D
When office workers were sent home in the spring of 2020, managers suddenly faced a new challenge: how to monitor teams that were working remotely.
A new book, “Leading at a Distance”, by James Citrin and Darleen Derosa of Spencer Stuart, an executive-search firm, attempts to provide some practical tips for managers dealing with staff whom they do not see face to face.
The authors are not in the gloomy(阴暗的) camp that believes remote working is a disaster. They think it can be just as effective as face-to-face work.
They point out that the ability to hire people who can work anywhere means that businesses will find it easier to develop more diverse workforces. A study by McKinsey, a consultancy(咨询公司) ,found that 70% of companies thought remote hiring would help in this respect.
The book offers some useful advice. For starters, keep virtual teams small. The upper threshold(界限) seems to be around a dozen. A study found that 37% of low-performing teams had 13 or more members. In addition, the best-performing teams tended to be drawn from one department, such as marketing, rather than from across the firm.
Mr. Citrin and Ms. Derosa also warn of the dangers of virtual meetings. Just because it is possible to schedule one does not mean it is necessary or wise to do so. Poorly run meetings do not just waste time, they threaten the ability to meet deadlines, adding to workers’ stress. Long meetings should have breaks, allowing for a gap between sessions in an hourly schedule.
A few things must change when people work remotely. But not everything does. Managers will need to make a more determined effort to keep in contact with their staff. If, as most people expect, a hybrid(混合的) model emerges with remote working a couple of days a week, there will be plenty of space for interaction when managers and team members are both present.
12. What did James Citrin and Darleen Derosa attempt to do in the book?
A. Provide some tips for employees.
B. Help managers to see staff face to face.
C. Raise some questions on working remotely.
D. Address some practical matters on remote managing.
13. What would remote hiring help employers to do?
A. To keep in touch with staff in different ways.
B. To employ more hard-working labor forces.
C. To have easy access to various labor forces.
D. To hire less labor forces working in foreign countries.
14. What does the author talk about in the last but one paragraph?
A. The dangers of wasting time.
B. The need to schedule meetings.
C. The disadvantages of online meetings.
D. The things we should avoid in meetings.
15. Which of the following can best demonstrate the main idea of the passage?
A. How to lead remotely.
B. How to hold virtual meetings.
C. How to keep in contact with managers.
D. How to tackle affairs when working remotely.

Marie was upset. The single mom worked late shift but never managed to sleep past 6: 00 am because of the garbage collectors! “Don’t make any noise!” she screamed out of her window. “People are trying to sleep!”
“Sorry, Madam,” Jeff the garbage collector, said. “We’re trying our best to avoid producing noise. And we’re just doing our job!” Marie stared at him and shut her window angrily. Jeff emptied the heavy garbage cans into the back of the truck. “You fool,” Marie said. She never expected that very soon she’d be very grateful to the young man she had just screamed at.
A week later, Marie woke at 5: 55 am because of the stomach pain. She got up and headed for the bathroom, but on her way she started feeling dizzy and sick and broke into a cold sweat. “David!” Marie cried for her six-year-old son. “David, help me!” When David got up and reached her, Marie was lying on the floor. “Get help,” she whispered to him. The little boy saw his mom was lying on the floor unconscious and started crying.
He wondered whom he could turn to for help. They were new in town and had no family there. And at that time, neighbors were all sleeping. Just then, the garbage truck came to collect garbage. David then rushed outside and cried anxiously, “Help! Help!” Hearing it, Jeff and his teammate quickly got to David! After knowing what had happened, Jeff called an ambulance and comforted David.
Soon, the ambulance arrived. The medical workers checked Marie and found the unconsciousness was caused by anaemia(贫血). They gave her first aid and claimed that Marie would recover soon. But she needed to go to hospital and be treated with injections. Then, Marie was taken away.
David cried sadly for his mom. Jeff accompanied him, patting him on the shoulder and saying, “Don’t be afraid, and your mom will be back soon.” The six-year-old boy nodded as if he could understand. Jeff couldn’t bear to leave the little boy alone at home. After asking for a leave of absence, Jeff stayed to take care of David.

To help all students lead a healthier life and have a more positive attitude towards life, our school has planned to invite an outstanding psychologist to give us a related lecture. The psychologist will give us valuable guidance on how to strengthen personal communication skills, how to form good habits, etc. These recommendations can have a long-lasting influence on a person’s life and it’s suggested that everyone come to the lecture. It will be held in our school hall from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. next Monday. When attending the lecture, you’re expected to arrive five minutes earlier, keep quiet and take notes if necessary.

Paragraph 1:
Then, Jeff followed David into his room and tried his best to help him. He held David all the time, trying to give the little boy some warmth, which considerably relieved David’s sadness. David gradually calmed down and fell asleep. Then Jeff prepared a meal for David. When the boy woke up hungry, he was amazed at the wonderful food made by Jeff, who was really good at cooking. The two happily enjoyed the meal, then read books and played games together. David was full of life again.
Paragraph 2:
Several hours later, Marie headed home hurriedly after she was allowed to leave hospital. The moment she opened the door, she was shocked to see David was with Jeff. They seemed to have got along well. Seeing his mom, David ran to hug her excitedly and told her all that Uncle Jeff did for him and her. Jeff smiled without saying anything. Marie sincerely thanked Jeff and apologized for her previous rudeness. Jeff and Marie became friends. And later when the truck came at 6: 00 am, Marie didn’t yell any more. She came out with cups of coffee for Jeff and his teammate.
