第一节 (共15小题;每小题2.5分,满分37.5分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中选出最佳选项。
A
Given that October is Mental Health Month, how can we manage our mental health and boost our mood as our third year with the COVID-19 pandemic draws to a close? According to Dr Andrew Thompson, a registered doctor at Instantscripts, even some small, 15-minute acts can play a huge role in improving your mental well-being at a time like this.
1. Reach out to a support network
This network can be made up of friends, family, mental health professionals — anyone you trust who can help support you during this time. Taking 15 minutes out of your day for a quick phone call to a friend can really boost your mood and help reduce those feelings of isolation for a while.
Try setting up a picnic with friends to enjoy some social time with the added bonus of getting outside.
2. Set up a daily schedule/routine
It’s easy to get glued to your work computer during the day, and stay up all hours of the night streaming movies and TV during lockdown. But all of that leads to you getting less sleep and that can contribute to poor mental health. Instead of accidentally overscheduling, take 15 minutes to establish a clear routine each day that allows for plenty of downtime and rest. That means switching off your laptop whenever you finish work, and prioritizing your sleep every night.
Try setting up a Google Calendar to make keeping track of your day easier.
3. Take advantage of telehealth services
One of the big benefits of the pandemic is that many support services are now accessible remotely, meaning you can get help without having to leave home.
Spending just 15 minutes talking through your mental health concerns with a professional can do you a world of good and get you started on the path to better mental well-being.
Try reaching out to services such as BeyondBlue (1300 22 4436), which offer 24/7 counseling and support.
4. Get active for 15 minutes
It can be so easy to give up on exercise when you’re struggling mentally, but studies have shown that moving your body really can improve your mood. Setting aside 15 minutes every day for exercise that you actually enjoy — whether it’s a walk, yoga, or a YouTube workout video — can give you a little hit of positive endorphins.
Try investing in a smartwatch like a FitBit Inspire 2 to keep you motivated, track your activity and remind you to keep moving.
1. What does Dr Thompson advise doing to get rid of the feeling of isolation during lockdown?
A. Stay in contact with your friends. B. Watch movies and TV.
C. Exercise 15 minutes each day. D. Keep track of your day to stay motivated.
2. What is the purpose of creating a daily schedule?
A. To avoid overscheduling. B. To become more productive.
C. To make time to entertain yourself. D. To improve your sleep quality and well-being.
3. What is the article intended to tell us?
A. Ways to celebrate Mental Health Month. B. Simple ways to seek support.
C. Four 15-minute acts to lift your mood. D. Staying positive during the lockdown.
B
It was late on a Thursday evening in Austin, Texas, and I had just finished my shift downtown waiting tables. I hopped into my truck and headed away from the chaos to my own personal oasis, Dan’s Depot. It was on a four-lane road that went straight from the heart of Austin to West Texas. Once, Dan’s Depot had been outside of the city. But with Austin’s population growing and the city’s expansion, it was swallowed up by high-rise buildings and skyscrapers.
I’ve been familiar with Dan’s Depot since I played my first show there. Like most waiters in Austin, I’m actually a musician. The woman who welcomes customers is Dan’s wife Maude.
I slid my truck into the last free spot and headed to the door. “How’s it going, Maude?” I asked.
“David, I just don’t know what we’re going to do,” she said. “Our contract with the landlord is up for renewal at the end of the month, and he has doubled the rent. Even if we charged twice as much for the snacks and shows, we could never make ends meet.”
My heart dropped. On some level, I’d been expecting to hear this news for as long as I’d been coming to Dan’s Depot. After all, Dan’s Depot was now sandwiched between a shop selling yoga pants to people who could afford personal trainers and a luxury furniture store where even a simple dining chair cost more than $1,000. How could this little live music joint survive with those kinds of neighbors?
“What are you going to do with this place? Are you moving?” I asked.
She shook her head slowly. “I just don’t know. Dan and I are not as young as we used to be.”
I patted her on the shoulder and made my way to the tables near the stage. Memories sprung up in my mind. Most of my musical ideas came to me while I was watching live shows here at Dan’s Depot. When the song ended, I got up and went back to Maude.
“How about I run the new Dan’s Depot?” I asked her. She stared at me, surprised.
“Hear me out,” I said. “I’ve got enough money to go in with you and Dan as a third partner. I know the Texas music scene in and out, and I can get the best new bands in here every week. We’ll move it way down South Congress Avenue, where it’s still close enough to be accessible from downtown but the rent is more affordable. And most importantly, this place means a lot to me.”
Maude was still staring at me silently. I began to grow uneasy. Had I offended her? I started apologizing. She cut me off with a huge embrace. “Honey, I think that’s a fantastic idea.”
4. The underlined word “oasis” in Paragraph 1 refers to a place where the author ________.
A. parks his truck B. works full-time
C. grabs a meal at night D. finds joy and relaxation
5. Why did the author say he had long expected to hear the news Maude told him?
A. He had felt the sandwiches in Dan’s Depot were too expensive.
B. He had thought Dan’s Depot was out of tune with its surroundings.
C. He had pointed out the management of Dan’s Depot was inefficient.
D. He had suggested Dan and Maude should retire early and enjoy their lives.
6. What does the author advise Maude to do?
A. Sell Dan’s Depot to him. B. Hire him as a lead singer.
C. Find another way to run the business. D. Advertise for a third partner.
7. What is the main idea the author wants to convey to us?
A. Music is powerful. B. Old traditions die hard.
C. Maude could never make ends meet. D. Every end is a new beginning.
C
Generation Z is different. As a whole, Americans born between the late 1990s and early 2000s are less likely to have work or look for it: their labour-force-participation rate is 71%, compared with 75% for millennials (born between 1980 and the late 1990s) and 78% for Generation X (born in the decade or so to 1980) when each came of age. As a result, they make up a smaller share of the workforce. With graduation ceremonies behind them, the latest group of diploma-holders are entering the job market. What they want from employers is also not quite the same as in generations past.
Although Gen-Z employees felt more lonely and isolated than their older colleagues at the start of the pandemic, the ability to work remotely has brought new possibilities. The benefits go beyond working in your pyjamas. Many are taking calls from beach chairs and hammocks (吊床) in more comfortable places or fleeing big cities in search for cheaper or larger homes.
This has big implications. Industries with jobs that cannot be done from home are falling out of favour with recent graduates. A study by ManpowerGroup, an employment company, suggests an inverse relationship (反比关系) between talent shortages and flexible working policies. The sectors which are either less able to offer remote work or have been slower to embrace it — including construction, finance and manufacturing — have faced some of the biggest skills gaps for all types of job.
That in turn has accelerated a pre-existing trend of young employees trading Wall Street for Silicon Valley. Now technology bosses are more willing than their opposite numbers in finance to let employees work from home (or anywhere else). Annual rankings of employer desirability by Universum, a graduate-staffing consultancy, bear this out. In 2008, the list of best employers graded by American graduates was dominated by big banks and the Big Four consulting firms. By 2021, seven of the ten highest spots were occupied by tech and media giants.
8. What does the underlined word “diploma-holders” in the first paragraph refer to?
A. Employees. B. Students. C. Graduates. D. Shareholders.
9. Why do Gen-Z employees prefer to work remotely?
A. They love wearing pyjamas while working. B. They want more holidays on the beach.
C. They can’t afford the living expenses in big cities. D. They want to work in a more flexible way.
10. What does the study by ManpowerGroup suggest?
A. All walks of life are facing some of the biggest skills gaps.
B. Construction, finance and manufacturing can’t offer remote work.
C. Industries with jobs that cannot be done from home are less popular.
D. Industries with flexible working policies may suffer talent shortages.
11. Why does the author mention Wall Street and Silicon Valley?
A. To weigh up the pros and cons of the two industries.
B. To prove industries in technology are more appealing.
C. To predict the change of preference among employees.
D. To show Silicon Valley is a better place to settle down.
D
For an industry that thrives (蓬勃发展) on creativity, fashion has been slow to introduce new ideas to reduce its distinctly uncool environmental footprint.
On all three fronts in the planetary crisis — climate change, nature loss and waste — manufacturers and retailers (零售商) of clothing could, and must, do better. Their carbon emissions are huge, thirst for raw materials is unsustainable and waste management systems are rubbish. As just one example, every year we send 350,000 tonnes of clothing to landfill in the UK.
There are growing pockets of green creativity in the industry, but for the most part high-street brands seem to double down on the “fast fashion” business model.
We as consumers must also shoulder a large part of the blame, gladly stuffing our cupboards with cheap, bad and unsustainably produced clothes to be worn a few times and then thrown away. Most people on Earth participate in this wasteful cycle, helping to make clothing one of the most environmentally destructive industries.
Unlike some other damaging consumer choices, such as buying animal products, it isn’t really possible to simply choose out of clothes shopping. But of course there are ways of consuming that are less harmful. If patterns of demand change, such as changing to brands that run buy-back schemes for unwanted clothing, the industry will respond. More powerfully, we can simply choose to wear our clothes for longer. Keeping an article of clothing for an extra year can cut its environmental footprint by 30 per cent.
That, of course, requires a change in our mindsets. But such things can and do happen. A few years ago, plant-based diets were the choice of the unconventional few. Now they are commonplace.
We need the same revolution to happen when it comes to clothing choices. Here’s a make-do-and-mend mindset becoming mainstream — and even fashionable.
12. What’s the author’s attitude to the carbon footprint of the fashion industry?
A. Satisfied. B. Negative. C. Indifferent. D. Favorable.
13. What’s the author’s suggestion for consumers when it comes to clothing choices?
A. Stop shopping for new clothes. B. Making old clothes last longer.
C. Throwing out your unwanted clothes. D. Buying expensive and designer clothes.
14. Why does the author mention plant-based diets?
A. He is an advocate of plant-based diets.
B. Plant-based diets are increasingly popular.
C. Plant-based diets are environmentally friendly.
D. He wants to stress it’s possible to change mindsets.
15. What’s the best title of the text?
A. Make Do and Mend B. Personal Clothing Choices
C. The Future of Fashion Industry D. Reduce Carbon Emissions

Why do women always feel cold?
The “correct” temperature to be set often forms the basis of office arguments between women and men. Between the sexes, there are always more similarities than differences. ___16___ Is there any science backing up the widespread belief that women “feel the cold” more than men?
Biological differences between men and women
At around the same body weight, women tend to have less muscle to generate heat. ___17___ Thus, the skin feels colder, as it’s slightly further away from blood vessels (血管).
Women also tend to have a lower metabolic rate than men, which reduces heat production capacity during cold exposure, making women more likely to feel cold as the temperature drops.
Hormonal differences
The hormones oestrogen (雌激素) and progesterone (黄体素) are found in large quantities in women. ___18___ Oestrogen enlarges blood vessels at the extremities, meaning more heat can be lost to the surrounding air. And progesterone can cause the vessels in the skin to tighten, meaning less blood will flow to keep the internal organs warmer, leaving women feeling cooler.
Is it just humans?
___19___ Studies on many species of birds and mammals report that males commonly gather in cooler areas where there is shade, while females and offspring stay in warmer environments where there is sunlight, as the young are unable to regulate their own body temperature during some stages. Therefore, the difference between heat-sensing mechanisms may provide an evolutionary advantage.
So how do we agree on the ideal temperature?
In the workplace, personal comfort systems are thermal systems that heat or cool and can be locally positioned in individual work stations such as desktops, chairs, or near the feet and legs. ___20___ These systems provide individualized thermal comfort to meet personal needs without affecting others in the same space.
A. The skin is the first line of defence.
B. They contribute to the core body and skin temperatures.
C. Animals have the same system to regulate body temperature.
D. They also have more fat between the skin and the muscles.
E. The preference for warmer temperatures isn’t unique to humans.
F. Examples include desk fans, heated chairs or foot warmers.
G. Researches show women prefer a higher temperature to men, however.

65-year-old Mr. Fairfax had retired from teaching. He was very interested in adventure. This time he made an adventure on a sparsely (稀少地) populated land. In the cold winter, he tried a new place and forgot to bring his cell phone, the only time on the trip. He trekked (艰苦跋涉) more than half an mile with two dogs to a harvested wheat field.
With his dark staring eyes at the horizon in expectation of another rabbit, Mr. Fairfax stepped on the thin snow on a canal. Suddenly, it collapsed (坍塌) and dropped him four feet to the bottom.
Realizing that he was in trouble and was going to hurt himself, Mr. Fairfax was suddenly picking up a lot of speed. His left leg hit first, and he lay on his side to reach for his shotgun, unloaded it and used it as a crutch (拐杖). He spent an hour and a half climbing the canal but slipped and slid back down when he was partly up. This time, one of his feet got fixed between two rocks. Mr. Fairfax told himself that if he didn’t get himself out of that canal, he wasn’t going to have a very good night.
Mr. Fairfax walked his foot free and climbed more slowly and cautiously out of the canal. He immediately realized the difficulty of the task before him. The accident occurred about 2 p.m., and it was nearing 5 p.m. with the road far away as the sun was setting.
Mr. Fairfax focused on crawling to safety. Even with his gun supporting him, hopping was impractical. Instead, he sat down and pushed himself backward less than 40 inches at a time with his good leg. He was determined and sure that he must hold on. He was in exhaustion and had more frequent breaks. Temperatures dropped overnight, and his gloves and boots got wet. His hands and feet soon were completely numb.
