My neighbor has a beautiful lawn. He hates to see even one weed(野草)in it. I understand his feelings but accept a little more of a natural look. Every year, the spring rains caused weeds to appear where they were not planted, especially in the lawn. He then starts to mix up all his different poisons in his garage. There is one weed killer for killing weeds in paths, another for killing weeds in flower beds, another for killing grass in flower beds and yet another for killing weeds in grass.
One day when I got home from work, he was killing the dandelions(蒲公英) growing at the side of my house. “ I'm sure that you will be happy with me killing these weeds for you,” he said.
Knowing he meant well, I said thanks to him. However, deep inside, I felt saddened. I happen to like dandelions. For me, even in something as simple as a dandelion, there is art. In fact, there is even poetry in a dandelion!
Dandelions can be used for many different purposes. They certainly do grow where nothing else does, like along the side of my house where I do not water. The flowers are a pretty bright yellow. They form their own picture of golden color around my washing line, something like a crazy artwork.
The flowers also add fine flavor and color when dropped in ice water. Do you know that the leaves can be used in a salad to spice it up? They also add vitamins. I've been told that the leaves and roots contain vitamins A, B and C as well as minerals such as iron and calcium. It does not taste that great, but it certainly is good for you.
If dandelions weren't so tough and hardy, gardeners would raise them carefully in greenhouses. They'd be expensive in the shops and people would form dandelion societies to show them off and teach others about their benefits. But they are not rare and delicate, so we label them weeds and kill them.
But I say that they are works of art, carefully made by nature's magical hand. As the season progresses, the flower turns into light puffy seeds that can float in the wind. If you blow the round head of seeds gently but firmly, the seeds fly away in every direction, forming a kind of art on the move.
So in the dandelion are both art and poetry. Let nature's art and beauty never stop to fill you with joy and amazement.
24. How did the author feel about his neighbor killing dandelions for her ?
A. She was very grateful and thanked him. B. She didn't pay much attention to it.
C. She had mixed feelings about it. D. She hated his neighbor for the trouble made.
25. What does the underlined sentence in Paragraph 3 refer to ?
A. Dandelions can serve different purposes.
B. Dandelion flowers form a beautiful picture in the author's garden.
C. Dandelions can be added to salad, improving the flavor.
D. Dandelions are free of charge, just like poetry.
26. What makes dandelions weed ignored by people ?
A. Dandelions are not as beautiful as other flowers.
B. They are too tough to arouse gardeners' desire to raise them carefully.
C. They are so expensive that people can't afford to buy in the shops.
D. They are very strong and uncommon in nature.
27. What adjectives can be used to describe dandelions according to the author ?

I’m at the salon and my hairdresser Kristi Lauren is talking rubbish. To be precise, what she tells me is pretty dumbfounding, that is, exactly how much waste her salon recycles: last year it was 1.25 tonnes. Everything from hair to shampoo bottles is recycled in innovative ways. Her waste is collected by Waste Free Systems, a social enterprise.
Lauren explains the problem, “Our colour tubes are boxed, and they can have a paper ingredient (成分) list as well as the plastic cover and the metal tube. All our product bottles. Then there' s all that cut hair, and the unused colour that would normally be washed down the sink.”
Waste Free Systems charges a fee for collecting the waste, and money raised by selling recycled materials goes to charities. Lauren, who runs an eight-chair salon, says, “It's a small price to pay. It ends up being just about $ 2 per client — we call it a green tax .”
Paul Frasca is the co-founder of Sustainable Salons,a similar service which now works with almost 1,000 hairdressing salons and beauty salons across Australia and New Zealand. Frasca says many salons are now using their green programs actively as a marketing strategy. “The environmentally aware consumer is now the most important customer on the market. So it doesn't just make environmental sense.”
Both programs are researching new ways to redirect waste. Waste Free Systems is using hair to provide nutrients for plants, while Sustainable Salons makes hair products for cleaning up oil leakage. Sustainable Salons has partnered with Dresden Vision to turn plastic shampoo bottles into frames(框架)for eyeglasses. Waste Free Systems has experimented with turning plastic bottles into 3D printing material.
28. What does the underlined word “dumbfounding” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Astonishing. B. Encouraging. C. Unreliable. D. Practical.
29. What does Frasca mean by his words in paragraph 4 ?
A. Running a sustainable salon meets market demands.
B. Green programs should be independent of marketing.
C. There is room for improvement for Sustainable Salons.
D. It is difficult to raise consumers' environmental awareness.
30. What does the last paragraph mainly focus on ?
A. Benefits of using green salon products. B. Innovative ways of salon waste treatment.
C. Alternatives to plastic bottles used in salons. D. Effects of technology on the beauty industry.
31. From which is the text probably taken ?
A. A news story. B. An official report.
C. A research paper. D. A fashion advertisement.
D
A new study shows that the more people read any kind of fiction, the better their language skills are likely to be. The piece was written by Sandra Martin-Chang of Concordia University in Canada, and her student Stephanie Kozak.
Martin-Chang and Kozak used a scale(量表) called the Predictors of Leisure Reading (PoLR) to investigate reading behaviours (motivations, attitudes and interests). They then examined how well the PoLR predicted the language skills of 200 undergraduate students, with all data gathered at York University in Toronto. The researchers note that the age range of the subjects in the study is of key interest. In early adulthood, reading becomes self-directed rather than forced by parents or teachers, which makes this a perfect time for developing one's own reading habits. This population is also rather understudied, with most existing research focusing far more on children.
The researchers administered a series of measures over two separate half-hour sessions. First, the volunteers completed the 48-question PoLR scale measuring various reading behaviours. They were then given language tests. The researchers found that people who enjoyed reading fiction for leisure and who identified themselves as readers scored higher on the language tests, while those who read to access specific information scored more poorly on the same tests.
The many benefits of reading have long been established. Besides having better language abilities, lifelong readers are known to be more understanding of others, attain higher socioeconomic status and even live longer, healthier lives than non-readers.
“Teachers and parents can develop a love of reading by letting young people read what they want, without guilt or shame. This established interest, wanting to read something over and over again, having a strong desire to read an entire series, feeling connected to characters and authors, these are all good things,” Martin-Chang concludes.
32. What did the researchers take into consideration when choosing study subjects ?
A. Their age. B. Their education.
C. Their family background. D. Their childhood reading habit.
33. What do we know about those who behaved poorly in the language tests ?
A. They read a lot out of interest. B. They read to get information.
C. They were popular fiction lovers. D. They identified themselves as readers.
34. What might Martin-Chang advise teachers to do ?
A. Tell students to read book series.
B. Ask students to read a book repeatedly .
C. Allow students to choose their reading freely.
D. Encourage students to read books related to them.
35. What is the best title for the text ?
A. To open a book is always beneficial.
B. Reading enriches both mind and heart.
C. Lifelong readers are more understanding of others.
D. Picking up a book for fun positively affects language abilities.
第二节(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填人空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
You may have come across the picture that has a number drawn on the floor with two people standing on either side of it. One person sees a 6, and the other sees a 9. They are both right, but they are wrong in the eyes of the other person. This is perspective (角度). In life, few things are absolutely right or wrong. 36
37 Because we often feel that as long as other people' s opinions and decisions do not affect us, ours should not affect them. However, the fact is that our perspective on life does affect the people around us. Let's go back to the 6 and 9 example we begin with. We can end up having two adults who refuse to agree and separate after a heated argument, destroying the chances of building a relationship. We can also end up having two adults who change positions and perspectives to see that this can either be a 6 or a 9, depending on where they stand. 38 And all they have to do is view things from a different perspective.
Having good perspective on life gives you an advantage. First of all, you are a lot more open to seeing from other people' s perspectives, thus making it easy for you to create meaningful relationships.
39 If you live a life where you are constantly showing thankfulness and being happy, then you have lived a satisfying life.
The moment your perspective on life comes into play, always remember that the other person' s perspective matters as well. 40 A lot of quarrels, battles, and wars could be avoided if people saw things from another person' s perspective.
A. Try to put yourself in someone else' s shoes.
B. What we usually have are two different perspectives on one thing, instead.
C. You may not realize how important your perspective on life is.
D. It also gives you a lot more reasons to be grateful and happy.
E. Your perspective determines how other people deal with you.
F. This can graduate into handshakes and the start of a friendship.
G. Change your perspective so that you can see the most growth in your mind .

Dear Lucy,
Your problem is common one among middle school students. Maybe the following advices can help you. First in all, believe in yourself. Your greatest problem is that you lack self-confidence. The first thing you must do it is to smile at your classmates. One smile speaks loud about your wish to make friends than any word. Your smile will show that you are friendly to him. Next, trying talking with a student who is as shy as you or who share the same interest as you. You can discuss your studies with a classmate and you can also talk about your hobbies. Unless anyone is in trouble, you should be ready to help him or her. Once you have confidence, you can make as many friends as possibly.
Yours,
Li Fang

Dear Miss Evans,
How is everything going? I am writing to ask you to do me a favour. As Senior Two students, we are having a busy but very meaningful year. Therefore, we intend to make a documentary in English for it.
We have decided to focus on both our study and life. We have made a relevant plan. On the one hand, we will record some wonderful scenes in time. On the other hand, we are going to insist on videoing once a month to record our life. However, we find it demanding to write English subtitles. Faced with so many difficulties, I would really appreciate it if you could offer us the English subtitles and give us some valuable suggestions.
I am looking forward to your rely.
Yours

W: Oh, but geography is really interesting ! It s my favorite.
( Text 2 )
M: We need more people for the summer show. There are some ways you can help, by making

W: OK,I'll come. I'd be interested in helping with the costumes.
( Text 3 )
M: Did you choose a present for your sister? She is giving a party next Saturday. I thought about earrings.

( Text 4 )
W: Have you seen my mobile anywhere ? I used it in the kitchen. Did I put it on the desk
afterwards ?

W: Ah, I was right. Look ! I couldn' t see it because of the books.
( Text5 )
M :So what did you think of the trip ?I thought the section on robots was good. I have to do a
presentation on them. So it' s very useful.
W: Yes, I' ve also got loads of ideas for my presentation on space travel. That guide made it
more exciting than just looking at the displays because I didn't think they were organized
very well.
( Text 6 )
W: Tom, who is your favorite football player ?
M: It' Mike.
W: What position does he play ?
M: He mostly plays left back but sometimes plays right wing which makes him more efficient. Do you have A favorite football player ?
W: No. I hardly ever watch football matches. My English teacher asked us to write about a football player. So I wanted to know something about it. Thank you.
( Text 7 )
W: Was there anything that particularly surprised you when you arrived at Grammar College ?
M: Yeah. The buildings are very modern. What impressed me most is that the teaching staff are
all highly qualified. It rains as much as it always did at home, though !
W: And what s it like, studying law ?
M: People told me that it would be very stressful. It hasn' t been too bad, though. I' ve really
enjoyed the challenge. But the more you put in, the better you do.
W: Do you have a part-time job ?

W: Certainly. We provide a variety of English programs for children. May I ask how old your
son is, please ?
M: He' turn 13 in two months.
W: Well, for children your son’s age, we provide a summer camp experience for them. They can spend time on the beach in Florida, receive sports training in San Domenico, or prepare for college in Lawrenceville. These are just a few of the options that will enhance their English learning experience.
M: Well ,my son is really interested in sports.
W: That's great. So do you want to apply to a program now ?

W: And it has three floors , doesn' t it ?
M: Yes, and there is no lift. So we' re forever carrying stuff up the stairs. It' s quite exhausting.
W: Buildings like this always have arched ground floors. It looks like an underground prison. Was it used for storing weapons ?

W: How do you feel now the project' s finished ?
M: Even if I have just changed someone else's original design, I consider it my creation. We' ve given this building new life.

I' m the director of the college. We’re planning on holding the opening ceremony on April 21st with a view to starting summer classes on June 15th. It's hard to say at this moment exactly how many students are likely to enroll for summer school, but there' s certainly been a lot of interest, especially after the series of adverts we did on the radio. We were confident those would be more effective than TV promotions as people tend to change channels during the breaks between programs. You can visit our website to get more information about entry fees. We' re hoping to attract some useful publicity at the opening ceremony, and our marketing director has been working very hard on this. We thought it was important to invite a famous writer to declare the college officially open. We’re pleased the writer Adam has agreed. We are thrilled to announce that the volleyballer Harry and the businessman James will give a short talk. The aim of the opening is to get local people to sign up for our practical subjects. We’re going to have local experts giving free classes here. Someone suggested we should have a new office in the city center to create interest, but it will cost a lot.
