I once had a hard time making a living in France. It was one night three years ago, I felt a need to meet people so I went to the cinema. Outside the cinema was a woman with long dirty gray hair asking for money. I reached for my wallet but then something made me stop and enter into a conversation with her. I said, “Look, all the women going to the cinema here are seeing a film that can change your life. I’d rather buy you a ticket than give you money.”
She thought for a moment and then came in with me. She hid behind me because, she said, the people running the theater didn’t like her. I got her a ticket and she sat next to me. There were about 80 women there. I noticed some of them were turning around and looking at me with expressions of surprise.
I asked the poor woman to come the following night to an event where there would be many representatives(代表) of different kinds of social services. I thought they could be of some help to her. She did come and I was able to direct her to an agency that helped women in her situation. I want the other people there to meet you.”

It is common to experience culture shock(冲击) when living in a foreign country for a certain period of time. Culture shock is the uncomfortable feeling of uncertainty that many people experience when they live in other surroundings. It is a quite natural part of being used to a new environment.
Some good ways to successfully reduce and overcome(克服) culture shock are to read about the place where you will be staying and the things you will be doing, also, if possible, speak with someone who has already lived in the new environment.
Once you are there, keep in mind that people and customs may be very different from what you are used to. If you have realized the difficulties and misunderstandings that may happen to you, you will keep a cool head, and keeping an open mind will allow you to find ways of dealing with those problems that may appear.
If it is possible, try your best to talk with the local people and ask them questions. Don’t try to isolate(孤立) yourself, even if it is within a group of people from your own country. Local people will generally be pleased to introduce you to their culture and willing to answer questions. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes. When you want to learn something from local people, they are usually willing to share their culture with you and learn from you in turn.
Most importantly, keep a sense of humor! Don’t be too hard on yourself if you don’t know what to do in a social situation. Laugh at yourself and others will laugh with you. Most people will admire your wisdom and effort to understand their ways, especially if you have no idea of small cultural differences.

Why are so many people so afraid to fail? Quite simply because no one tells us how to face the failure(失败). In fact, failure can become experience that means growth. We forget that failure is part of the human condition and that every person has the right to fail.
Most parents work hard to prevent failure or protect their children. One way is to lower standards. Nearly 60% of the parents choose this way. When a child finishes making a table, the mother describes it as “perfect” even though it doesn’t stand still. The other way is to blame (责怪) others. If John fails in science, his teacher is unfair or stupid.
There’s a problem with the two ways. It makes a child unprepared for the real life if they don’t meet enough failure. The young need to learn that no one can be best at everything, no one can win all the time, and that it’s possible to enjoy a game even when you don’t win. The young should be allowed to experience failure and be helped to come out of it.
Failure never gives people pleasure. It hurts both grown-ups and children. But it can be really good to your life when you learn to use it. Ask yourself what you did wrong and how you can improve. If someone else can help, don’t be shy about asking them.
Please answer the following questions with no more than 5 words.
