Here are some of the Olympians who have shown the spirit of the Olympics in their unique ways at the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games.
Brittany Bowe
The 33-year-old Brittany Bowe voluntarily gave up her spot on the US 500-meter speedskating team to her teammate and friend Erin Jackson. It cost her one of the two spots at the 2022 Beijing Olympic Games. Jackson, the world's top-ranked woman for the event, slipped during the US Olympic qualifying contest.
“You are always ranked number one in the world and no one is more deserving than you to get an opportunity to compete in Beijing,” Bowe told Jackson.
Mikaela Shiffrin
The 26-year-old Alpine skier, who has won more World Cup races than anyone in history, woman or man, didn't finish three of her five races in Beijing after either falling or skiing out of the course within a matter of seconds.
“I don't know if anybody's failed that hard with so many opportunities — maybe in the history of the Olympics. But I will face those failures with sportsmanship,” she joked.
Eileen Gu
The 18-year-old “Snow Princess” has struggled in qualifying in both of her Olympic events. She fell once during the big air jumps and had to increase the technical difficulty in the third round to ensure her spot in the final, where she went on to win the gold medal,
“I don't know why I kept failing,” Gu said. “But I'm happy I was able to turn pressure into fuel and push through,”
Lindsey Jacobellis
After a 16-year medal drought(旱季), the 36-year-old eventually overpowered a much younger field of competitors during the women's snowboard cross and won her first career(职业) gold in Beijing. She went on to compete at the first-ever mixed team snowboard cross event with 40-year-old teammate Nick Baumgartner — again winning gold.
“Don't count the old girl out,” Jacobellis said jokingly.
1. Which event did Eileen Gu take part in?
A. Big air jump. B. Snowboard cross.
C. Alpine skiing. D. 500-meter speedskating.
2. How old was Lindsey Jacobellis when she won her first gold medal?

“Everything happens for the best,” my mother said whenever I faced disappointment. “If you can carry on, one day something good will happen. And you'll realize that it wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment.”
Mother was right, as I discovered after graduating from college in 1932. I had decided to try for a job in radio, then work my way up to sports announcer. I hitchhiked(搭便车) to Chicago and knocked on the door of every station — and got turned down every time. In one studio, a kind lady told me that in most cases big stations couldn't risk hiring inexperienced person. “Go out in the remote areas and find a small station that'll give you a chance,” she said. I went back home to Dixon, Illinois.
While there was no radio-announcing jobs in Dixon, my father said Montgomery Ward had opened a store and wanted a local athlete to manage its sports department. Since Dixon was where I had played high school football, I applied. The job sounded just right for me.
But I wasn't hired. My disappointment must have shown. “Everything happens for the best,” Mom reminded me. Dad offered me the car to hunt for jobs. I tried WOC Radio in Davenport, Iowa. The program director, a wonderful Scotsman named Peter MacArthur, told me they had already hired an announcer.
As I left his office, my frustration boiled over(沸溢,发怒). I asked aloud, “How can a fellow get to be a sport announcer if he can't get a job in a radio station?” I was waiting for the elevator when I heard MacArthur calling, “What was that you said about sports? Do you know anything about football?” Then he stood me before a microphone and asked me to broadcast an imaginary game. The preceding autumn, my team had won a game in the last 20 seconds with a 65-yard run. I did a 15-minute boost to that play, and Peter told me I would be broadcasting Saturday's game!
On my way home, as I have many times since, I thought of my mother's words: “If you carry on, one day something good will happen. Something wouldn't have happened if not for that previous disappointment”.

Watching his father die without oxygen support while suffering from a heart attack in 2020, Taher Mahmud Tarif, a Bangladeahi boy, made up his mind to build a device to prevent any more such tragic deaths. Afterwards, many COVID-19 patients experienced low oxygen levels in their blood, with demand for oxygen concentrators(浓缩器) among other medical equipment shooting up during the recent sharp rise in cases. Tarif said the situation gave him more driving force to build the device.
With the financial and overall support of Ishwardi UNO office and his educational institution, Tarif's determination and tireless efforts were rewarded with success as the ninth grader of Ishwardi Sara Marwari High School managed to make the concentrator after trying five times for about seven months, mainly using domestic components. He said that a locally made oxygen concentrator like his costs approximately $760 whereas an imported one does over $2,600.
In June, Tarif gave a detailed account of his invention and manufacture at the UNO office in Ishwardi at 11:00 am on Tuesday. He said it was created from his own thinking and with the addition of local technology generators and electric components. An oxygen concentrator takes in air and removes nitrogen(氮气) from it, leaving oxygen-enriched gas for use by people needing medical oxygen. “About 90 percent oxygen concentration can be generated from my oxygen concentrator machine. This machine can provide high-flow oxygen supply too. It can be very handy in local areas with no scope of getting oxygen support,” Tarif added.
“This is obviously a good invention for oxygen generation. It is capable of producing high-flow oxygen so it can be used for patients or refilling oxygen bottles,” said an assistant professor of Pabna Medical College Hospital. “Despite more lab and other examinations before using the machine as medical equipment,” the UNO said, “Tarif's invention will probably be a great achievement during this alarming COVID-19 situation.”
8. Why did Tarif build an oxygen concentrator?
A. Because his father needed one.
B. Because his father died of COVID-19.
C. Because COVID-19 patients need oxygen.
D. Because he wants to help save other patients.
9. What can we know about Tarif's invention in Paragraph 2?
A. It mostly consists of local parts. B. It succeeded at the first attempt.
C. It was made without others' help. D. It costs more than 2,600 dollars.
10. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. Tarif's invention has not been tested yet.
B. Tarif's invention has a promising future.
C. Tarif's invention produces oxygen bottles.
D. Tarif's invention has proved useful for COVID-19.
11. Where is this text most likely from?
A. A diary. B. A brochure. C. A newspaper. D. A novel.

The head of the Virgin Hyperloop(超级高铁) transport system says the company aims to begin carrying passengers by 2027.
The Virgin Hyperloop system is based on a technology called magnetic levitation(磁悬浮). It uses magnetic fields to lift a vehicle off the ground a little and to push it forward.
Some high-speed trains also use this technology. But unlike trains, a Hyperloop is designed to operate within tubes containing very little air. Electric force moves vehicles, called pods, through the tubes at high speeds. The system offers nearly silent travel and reportedly releases no carbon emissions.
The system's pods are designed to move at much higher speeds, up to 1,200 kilometers per hour. It says such a vehicle could complete a trip between New York and Washington, D.C. in 30 minutes. That would be two times as fast as a jet flight and four times faster than a high-speed train.
The pods will seat 28 passengers and could be specially designed to travel long or short distances, or to carry goods, the company said.
While the system is still in early development, it is predicted that commercial operations could start as early as 2027. Virgin Hyperloop is looking to first develop passenger systems in India, where the transport system is overcrowded, and in Saudi Arabia, which lacks infrastructure(基础设施).
It could be the first form of transportation in 100 years to revolutionize travel, as cars, trains and airplanes did before. “It starts off with two people riding a Hyperloop. It ends with hundreds of millions of people riding on a Hyperloop and that's what the 2020s — the roaring 2020s — will be,” he added.
Virgin Hyperloop has partners that include Virgin Group founder Richard Branson and the port operations company DP World, which is owned by the Dubai government.
12. What's the difference between a Hyperloop and a high-speed train?
A. A Hyperloop runs in a space with little air.
B. A high-speed train travels at a higher speed.
C. A Hyperloop uses magnetic levitation technique.
D. A high-speed train is more environment-friendly.
13. What advantage of a Hyperloop does the author mention in paragraph 4?
A. Its size. B. Its speed. C. Its safety. D. Its service.
14. What does the author think of the Hyperloop system?
A. It will take a long time to improve. B. It will replace the traditional vehicles.
C. It will be a milestone for transportation. D. It is only suitable for countries with heavy traffic.
15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. A Clean Form of Transportation Is on the Horizon
B. Traditional Transportation Will Face Great Challenges
C. High Technology Brings Great Convenience to Travel
D. The Hyperloop Plans to Start Carrying Passengers by 2027

Adele's new album, “30”, is finally available. Last month, hundreds of millions of us streamed its first single, “Easy On Me.” This song arouses feelings not easily put into words, but we can probably agree it is a sad song. ___16___ Yet sad music does pull us in and lift us up.
Let's start with a biological theory. When we experience real-life loss, or empathize(体会) with another's pain, certain hormones are released within us. ___17___ They do so by making us feel calmed and supported. Feeling Adele's pain, or recalling our own, may cause such chemical changes within us.
Psychologically, a key reason we enjoy sad songs is that they profoundly move us. Feeling moved can come from us suddenly feeling closer to other people. Indeed, when we have listened to “30”, we may turn to reaction videos to see how others feel. ___18___ And it boosts our feeling of being moved and triggers feelings of comfort and belonging.
___19___ Adele's songs allow us to view the pleasure in terms of the meaning she helps us make. Adele takes hard life experiences and makes sense of them. This is what much sad art does. It takes the pain and suffering of the world and gives it meaning. As philosopher Friedrich Nietzsche once put it, someone who has a why to live can bear almost any how.
Ultimately, we listen to Adele's songs when we want to recall, reflect, or belong. They let us feel her sadness, share our suffering, and connect with others. To all of us, Adele's songs say: ___20___
A. You are not alone in your pain.
B. Music speaks louder than words.
C. These help us to tackle loss and pain.
D. We can also think at the spiritual level.
E. Few people are aware sad music makes us feel good.
F. This lets us share an emotional experience with others.
G. This may make us better prepared for when real loss strikes.

As soon as his workday ended, Jordan rushed out of the office. He drove his car to the nearest supermarket to prepare for his mother's surprise birthday party that evening. Unfortunately for Jordan, it was Friday and the parking lot was packed with shoppers. He had to drive around looking for a space to park.
After nearly 20 minutes, he noticed a space, but that was specially used for unloading goods. He hesitated for a while, but thinking shopping would take him just a few minutes, he parked his car there and rushed into the supermarket. He hurried down the aisles(过道), checking the shopping list his sister had messaged him. Soon Jordan had almost everything. Now he just needed to pick out a birthday cake.
“Just a few minutes more,” he repeated these words in his mind several times as he sped down the target aisle. But when he got there, there was a long line of people wanting to buy cakes or cookies. He was getting more and more anxious, and began to regret not ordering a cake the day before.
Half an hour later, it was finally his turn. He asked for a chocolate cake, and carefully placed it in the cart. Now he could go! Jordan raced towards the nearest till(收款处).“Oh, I really have good luck!” he thought. “There's no one there!” However, out of the corner of his eye, he saw someone approaching the till ahead of him.
It was a young woman. Thinking he would surely be late if he failed to check out before the woman, he decided to take action. He pushed his shopping cart forward and narrowly missed hitting her. “Hey!” the woman cried. “Be careful. You could have hurt me!
Jordan felt embarrassed, but he pretended not to hear. He quickly paid for all his goods and rushed out of the supermarket, leaving the woman staring at him from behind. He looked at his watch and imagined that he would make it with good luck.

He sat heavily on the ground, feeling extremely frustrated. Just then he heard someone asking softly, “Are you alright?” Jordan looked up. It was that young woman! He was very embarrassed, not knowing what to say, but the woman kept asking kindly. Therefore, Jordan told her the whole story. She comforted him and offered to take him to his mother's home.
Jordan felt surprised that the women should give him a lift. “I am so sorry! I almost hit you just now!” Jordan said. “Just forget it! You were in a hurry.” the woman said understandingly with a smile. Hearing that, Jordan deeply regretted what he had done.
