It’s 6 p.m. on a Friday, and rather than heading home after a long workweek, Renee Dixon, a preschool director in Indianapolis, starts her second job as an Uber driver.
The money Dixon earns as a driver does not go into her own pocket. Instead, she uses it to buy holiday gifts and winter clothing for all 50 of her students. “So many families don’t have money to get Christmas presents this year. Some parents have lost their jobs, and others have had their wages cut back,” Dixon said. “A lot of them come from low-income families and are below the poverty line.”
The coronavirus pandemic, she said, has increased the need. “As far as presents go, a lot of these kids are likely to get nothing this year. I know how that feels,” said Dixon. “Being a driver in this special period, I have my own strict rules,” she said. In her car, mask-wearing is required. Each passenger must sanitize(消毒) their hands upon entering the car, and she uses wipes to clean the back seat and door handles between each ride. Plus, she keeps the windows open a crack to circulate fresh air.
Not only will her efforts bring joy to the children, but the gifts will also lessen the great pressure parents feel at this time. Alongside the money Dixon has earned through driving, several people in the community have donated money or offered to buy gifts for the students, including Eva Cheung. She quickly decided to get involved after hearing about Dixon’s efforts through Dixon’s husband. She said, “You read about people like Renee, but when you are finally able to connect with somebody like that and help fulfill their vision, it’s an amazing feeling.”
“Everything I’m doing is for these kids right now,” Dixon said. “Their world has turned upside down, and it’s no fault of their own. They deserve this from me.”
4. Why did Dixon start her second job as a driver?
A. To get gifts for her students. B. To support poor local workers.

C. They are forced to leave school early.
D. They have to earn a living by themselves.
7. Which of the following best describe Eva Cheung?
A. caring and independent B. considerate and modest
C. gifted and ambitious D. inspiring and generous

Chinese astronauts have performed the country’s first tandem spacewalk(双人太空行走), working forseven hours on the outside of the new Tiangong Station in orbit around the earth. Tiangong’ s construction is a significant step in China’s ambitious space programme.
On June 17, 2021, three astronauts became the first crew of the station, where they’ll remain for threemonths in China’s longest crewed mission to date. On the morning of July 4, two of them left the station for about seven hours of work in the first spacewalk at Tiangong. “The safe return of astronauts Liu Boming andTang Hongbo to the Tianhe core module(核心舱) marks the complete success of the first spacewalk in our country’s space station construction, ”the agency said. “Their task included testing a camera outside the Tianhecore module and testing the station’s robotic arm, which will be used to transfer future modules around the station. The astronauts installed(安装) foot stops on the robotic arm and with its support, carried out other assembly work,” the space agency added. Liu and Yang were supported from inside the station by the mission commander, Nie Haisheng, who’s on his third space mission.
This was the first of two spacewalks planned for the mission, both expected to last six or seven hours. It was the first time since 2008 that Chinese astronauts had gone outside their spacecraft. Back then, Zhai Zhigang made China the third country to complete a spacewalk after the Soviet Union and the US. This is China’s first crewed mission in nearly five years and a matter of huge honor as the country marks the 100th anniversary of the ruling Communist Party. The Chinese space agency is planning a total of 11 launches through to the end of next year, including three more crewed missions.

When colds or flu attacks, many people treat themselves to the comfort of warm blankets and hot chicken soup. Chicken soup has been shown to be more than just a comfort food, however.
An ancient Greek manuscript(手稿) written around 200BC describes how chicken soup can be used to treat respiratory(呼吸的) disorders, such as colds and flu. In the 12th century another Greek scholar wrote that chicken soup eases the symptoms people have when they have colds and flu. Modern research is showing that there is a basis for this old belief that chicken soup can help the common cold or other respiratory problems.
When a person gets a cold, the cold virus makes itself at home in one’s nose, sinuses and throat, resulting in swelling in these areas. The result is sore throat, headache, congestion(充血), coughing, etc. One experiment showed that hot chicken soup can clear the congestion that comes with a cold.
Chicken soup contains compounds(化合物) that stop the swelling which causes this problem. Scientists still don’t know why chicken soup works, but they are sure that it does. They have also found that in order to be effective, the soup must be made with vegetables. Scientists think that it may be due to the presence of some healthful elements(元素) found in plants. Perhaps the best evidence for the effectiveness of chicken soup comes from the research of one scientist who found that chicken soup is rich in a chemical widely used in cold medicines.
Thus, when your mother or grandmother tells you to eat chicken soup when you have a cold or flu, go ahead and enjoy it. You will be doing something worthwhile for your body as well as pleasing her.
12. Why are the two Greeks referred to in Paragraph 2?
A. Because Greece has a long food history.
B. Because Greeks like drinking chicken soup.
C. To prove colds and flu spread widely in Greece.
D. To show chicken soup has some medical effects.
13. How can chicken soup have a better treatment on a common cold?
A. Eat it at the right time. B. Choose healthy chicken.
C. Add vegetables into it. D. Take it with cold pills.
14. The author may agree that ________.
A. scientists find that chicken soup can kill cold viruses
B. scientists doubt if chicken soup really helps a cold
C. it takes less money to treat a cold with chicken soup
D. elders tend to appreciate the effects of chicken soup
15. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Chicken Soup Helps to Cure a Cold B. Why Not Eat Chicken Soup Often
C. You May Well Need Chicken Soup D. How to Deal with a Common Cold

由第一段“With a wide variety of online courses available to adults, the following ones from famous institutions at home and abroad may be a choice.(成人可以参加各种各样的在线课程,以下来自国内外知名机构的课程可能是一种选择)”和下文对四门课程的介绍可知,作者写作本文是为了介绍一些在线课程。故选A项。
4. A 5. C 6. B 7. B
根据文章第二段的第二句“Instead, she uses it to buy holiday gifts and winter clothing for all 50 of her students.”(相反,她用这些钱来买节日礼物和冬衣给她那50个学生。) 故选A项。
根据文章第三段的第五至七句“In her car, mask-wearing is required. Each passenger must sanitize(消毒) their hands upon entering the car, and she uses wipes to clean the back seat and door handles between each ride. Plus, she keeps the windows open a crack to circulate fresh air.”(每位乘客坐她的车均要求佩戴口罩;一上车就必须马上给手消毒。
最后一段“‘Everything I’m doing is for these kids right now,’ Dixon said. ‘Their world has turned upside down, and it’s no fault of their own. They deserve this from me.’(‘我现在所做的一切都是为了这些孩子们,’迪克森说。 根据文章第二段倒数第二句“Some parents have lost their jobs, and others have had their wages cut back.”(一些父母失去了工作,另一些父母的薪水被削减。),以及第三段的第一、二句“The coronavirus pandemic, she said, has increased the need. ‘As far as presents go, a lot of these kids are likely to get nothing this year. I know how that feels,’ she said.”(迪克森说:‘新冠疫情导致这一需求增加。
根据文章的第四段的第二句“Alongside the money Dixon has earned through driving, several people in the community have donated money or offered to buy gifts for the students, including Eva Cheung.”(除了迪克森通过开车赚的钱,社区里还有一些人捐款或为学生们买礼物,其中就包括张伊娃。)可知,伊娃也帮助这些学生,由此可以看出,她为人着想,对应B项的“considerate”(为人着想的,体贴的);根据第四段的最后一句“She said, ‘You read about people like Renee, but when you are finally able to connect with somebody like that and help fulfill their vision, it’s an amazing feeling.’”(她说:“你读到了像蕾妮这样的人,而当你最终也能够与这样的人建立联系并帮助实现他们的愿景时,你就会觉得很棒。”)

根据第二段中的“Their task included testing a camera outside the Tianhecore module and testing the station’s robotic arm, which will be used to transfer future modules around the station.(他们的任务包括测试“天合核”舱外的一个摄像头,以及空间站的机械臂,这些机械臂将用于在空间站周围运送未来的模块。)” 故选A项。
根据第二段中的“The astronauts installed(安装) foot stops on the robotic arm and with its support, carried out other assembly work(宇航员们在机械臂上安装了脚踏板,并在它的支撑下进行其他组装工作)”可知,宇航员们是在机器人 的帮助下完成了任务。故选D项。
根据文章第一段第一句“Chinese astronauts have performed the country’s first tandem spacewalk, working for seven hours on the outside of the new Tiangong Station in orbit around the earth.(中国宇航员完成了国内首次串联太空行走,在环绕地球轨道的新天宫空间站外工作了7个小时)”可知,文章主要介绍了神舟十二号航天员圆满完成了首次出舱活动的情况,所以“中国航天员首次串联太空行走”适合做标题。故选D项。

Modern research is showing that there is a basis for this old belief that chicken soup can help the common cold or other respiratory problems.(一份写于公元前200年左右的古希腊手稿描述了鸡汤如何用于治疗呼吸道疾病,如感冒和流感。
根据第四段“They have also found that in order to be effective, the soup must be made with vegetables. Scientists think that it may be due to the presence of some healthful elements(元素) found in plants.(他们还发现,为了有效,汤必须加入蔬菜做。
根据最后一段“Thus, when your mother or grandmother tells you to eat chicken soup when you have a cold or flu, go ahead and enjoy it. You will be doing something worthwhile for your body as well as pleasing her.(因此,当你感冒或流感时,如果你的母亲或祖母告诉你,喝鸡汤,你就去享受它。
根据文章第二段“Modern research is showing that there is a basis for this old belief that chicken soup can help the common cold or other respiratory problems.(现代研究表明,这种古老的信念是有根据的,即鸡汤可以帮助治疗普通感冒或其他呼吸系统问题。)”以及第四段“Chicken soup contains compounds(化合物) that stop the swelling which causes this problem. Scientists still don’t know why chicken soup works, but they are sure that it does.(鸡汤中含有的化合物可以阻止引起这个问题的肿胀。 所以“Chicken Soup Helps to Cure a Cold(鸡汤有助于治疗感冒)”作为文章标题最为合适。故选A。

故填their。

故填which。

之后”,副词late(晚地)不合句意。
to one’s +情感类抽象名词,shocking是形容词,to one’s shock(令某人震惊的是)。
故将were改为was。
故将them改为him。

the+adj.可以表示“某一类人”,the homeless(无家可归的人)。
