I’m rather good at using maps. But I forgot the maps and here we were, late afternoon, on the last day of vacation, my daughter, my cousin and I, driving along a two-lane highway in Oregon. No other cars in sight, and the sun had just gone down. Where was that sweet little village?
It was supposed to be right along this river. We drove on, farther into the unknown, with the river always at left as our guide. We kept passing farms and fields and now a few lights were coming out. In my head, I was doing a lot of self-criticisms: Why didn’t we start earlier, bring the maps and on and on? My cousin and I were both impatient and stressed. My daughter, at least, was happy in the back seat, text messaging a friend. I pulled up on the shoulder of the road to think.
Just then — WOW! Amazing! A new scene had appeared. Where did it come from?
Right there, out of nowhere: a magical misty landscape. Fields stretched in silent purples, with rows of tall trees, darkening in the dusk (黄昏). I turned off the car engine. All was silent in the hot summer air. Beside us, a plum-colored river hardly moved between a border of trees, its dark lazy water reflecting the last light of day.
How breathtaking! Where had it been? If I had seen even a bit of this beauty while driving along, I could have stopped and taken a look. I had missed it all.
We miss a lot, almost everything, in fact, in our world. Our task-focused filters (过滤器) take care of that, selecting only what we need. We need to get to work. Have some lunch. We see what we need to see, often for purposes of survival. Gregory Bateson, speaking of beauty, said the judgment is selection of a fact. In our daily lives, who or what is doing the selecting? Can we make a change? Can we see further?
    4. Which of the following might be the destination of the author’s driving?
    A. Her own home. B. A vacation spot.
    C. A tourist centre. D. Her cousin’s farm.
    5. What made the author keep blaming herself in the beginning?
    A. That the vacation was below her expectations.
    B. That she wasn’t as good at using maps as before.
    C. That her cousin and daughter couldn’t get along.
    D. That lack of full preparations got her to lose her way.
    6. The author felt really amazed because ___________.
    A. her carelessness brought an unexpected pleasure
    B. she discovered a tourist spot unknown to the public
    C. she unintentionally reached what she had planned to
    D. the right route to her destination came out of nowhere
    7. What does the story intend to tell us?
    A. Stay cool when you are trapped in trouble.
    B. Make a change for the purpose of survival.
    C. Slow down your paces to enjoy beauty in life.
    D. Be positive because there’s always an alternative.
    C
New research has shown how the Leaning (倾斜) Tower of Pisa has managed to keep standing in the face of several strong earthquakes. It has leaned at an angle of about five degrees.
The vulnerability (脆弱性)of the UNESCO World Heritage Site has confused engineers and scientists for a thousand years. Earthquake activities were expected to significantly damage the tower or even result in its falling over. However, unbelievably, this has not happened.
A research group of 16 engineers at the University of Bristol have now discovered that the height and hardness of the tower, combined with the softness of the base soil, ensure that it doesn’t resonate (共振) with earthquake ground motion, which is known as Dynamic Soil-Structure Interaction (DSSI) and the tower now holds the title of world record holder in DSSI effects.
What is interesting is that the very same soil, which caused the leaning instability (不稳定性) and made the tower almost fall, can be credited for helping it survive these earthquake events.
The tower continues to attract visitors keen to express their big surprise at amazing buildings. Construction of the tower began in the twelfth century and continued for over 199 years due to the onset of a series of wars.
Multiple efforts to preserve the historic site have occurred over the years. In the 1920s, the bases were put in cement grout (水泥架) with the intention of making the tower firm. In 1990, a decision was made to completely close the site to visitors due to the fear that it was at risk of falling over.
It was the first time the tower had been closed in 800 years. It reopened again in 2001 and remains one of Italy’s most popular tourist attractions.
    8. What did engineers and scientists find about the tower?
    A. What caused the leaning of the tower.
    B. Why the tower had survived for long.
    C. The earthquakes did damage to the tower.
    D. The condition of the tower was puzzling.
    9. What does the passage mainly discuss?
    A. The Leaning Tower of Pisa has survived several earthquakes.
    B. Some interesting and true facts of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
    C. The building and recent restoring of the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
    D. The relationship between earthquakes and the Leaning Tower of Pisa.
    10. How long was the tower ever closed?
    A. For about 10 years. B. For about 199 years.
    C. For about 790 years. D. For about 800 years.
    11. How does the soft base soil of the tower function?
    A. It strengthens the force of the earthquake.
    B. It contributes to the standing of the tower.
    C. It prevents the tower above from leaning.
    D. It keeps the same pace with earthquakes.
    D
Do you find it difficult to put down your mobile phone? If yes, you’re not alone. These days, many people suffer from the stress of FOMO (fear of missing out). They reach for their mobile phones when they wake up in the morning, and for the rest of the day, they constantly scroll down (向下滚动) the timelines of their social media apps to get the latest updates.
Despite the convenience smartphones bring, many people struggle with their digital habits. As Sameer Samat, US tech Company Google’s vice president of product management, said in his speech at the 2018 Google I/O developer conference on May 8th, 70 percent of people don’t want to spend so much time on their phones. This is why during the conference Google introduced an app called Dashboard for the new version (版本) of its Android operating system. This new app includes well-being functions that aim to help users manage the time they spend on their digital devices.
It all starts with a bird’s-eye view. Dashboard allows users to look at all the details of their phone habits. For example, a user can see how many times they’ve unlocked their phone and how many times they’ve checked their social media apps, as well as how much time they spend on each app every day.
Once the users see this information, they’ll be able to make some changes. With the App Timer function, users can set a time limit for how long they can use each app for every day. After they’ve hit the limit, they won’t be able to launch the app until the next day.
But even if users become more mindful of their usage, they’re still likely to be drawn in by notifications (通知). This is where the Shush feature comes in. It automatically (自动地) silences incoming calls and notifications when a user puts their phone face down.
If people truly want to make full use of their free time instead of losing hours using their smart phones, these new functions are just one way of doing that. After all, who needs to use an app to stop you from using other apps when the easiest answer would be just to use your willpower?
    12. Who are the target users of Dashboard?
    A. People who know little about smartphones.
    B. People who have trouble dealing with stress.
    C. People who are slow at searching for things online.
    D. People who wish to manage the time they spend on their smartphones.
    13. What can Dashboard do?
    A. Lock the phone at a certain time. B. Limit some apps to certain users.
    C. Limit the time certain apps can be used. D. Silence app notifications at night.
    14. The underlined word “mindful” in Paragraph 5 is closest in meaning to ________.
    A. skillful. B. careful. C. trapped. D. creative.
    15. What does the author think of Dashboard?
    A. It’s not useful at all. B. It’s perfectly designed.
    C. It should include more functions. D. It may be helpful to some people.

    第二节(满分25分)
    阅读下面材料,根据其内容和所给段落开头语续写两段,使之构成一篇完整的短文。
As a sixth grader, I began noticing how other kids were separating into different groups in the class. There were the geeks, the jocks (小丑) , and the popular cool kids. I wasn’t sure where I belonged. And I think that was a problem.
Our teacher had assigned “secret friends” for the coming week. The purpose of this assignment was to do nice things for your friends without letting them know who was doing it. We could leave encouraging notes on their desk or mysteriously leave a card in their backpack or book. Our teacher wrote each kid’s name on a piece of paper and threw them into a bucket, then we each closed our eyes and drew the name of the classmate who we were to secretly befriend and support over the next five school days.
Everyone was excited to get involved, including Rochelle. By the middle of the week, we had turned this assignment into a contest to see whose secret friend could leave the best gift. Instead of encouraging notes, we left stationary sets on our friend’s desk. Instead of giving compliments, we were giving bubble gum, lollipops and even money. It seemed that everyone was getting cool presents from their friends. Everyone except me, that is.
My secret friend followed our teacher’s directions without a fault. I received handmade cards, notes with nice thoughts and countless smiley face pictures saying that I was one of the nicest girls in the class. This friend seemed to think highly of me from the notes that were left, but the lack of gifts kept me wondering what was up with whoever had pulled my name.
On the last morning of our assignment, I walked into my classroom and noticed a package on my desk. At last, my secret friend had grasped the idea that a gift was what I really needed. I quickly ripped open the gift paper, only to find a small doll inside. The pink wool-knit doll seemed not new but delicate. But the girls sitting near me giggled and gossiped about the “little girl” gift I had received.
    注意:
    1. 续写词数应为150左右;
    2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
Hearing this, I felt my face turn red.

    2. 考查强调句。句意:2018年的一个晚上,他和朋友喝酒时,他开始热切地谈论有一个漂浮的家该有多好,这样他就可以一边钓鱼,一边喝啤酒。根据句意和“It was”可知,句子是强调句,其结构是“it is/was+被强调的部分+who/that...”,句中被强调的部分是“one night in 2018, while drinking with his friend”是时间,因此空格处是that,故填that。

reflect on是固定短语,意为“思考”,因此空格处是介词on,故填on。

One Possible Version:
Hearing this, I felt my face turn red. Embarrassed and ashamed, I secretly complained that the girl gave me so stupid a gift to arouse others’ derision. I even joined other girls in gossiping about my secret friend and the poor doll. When I continued with mean remarks, a girl sitting at the last row arose and came up, casting me an angry and disappointed look. With tears streaming down her face, she admitted, “I’m your secret friend and I’m sorry about the gift.” Then she ran out of the classroom. Frozen with shock, I couldn’t utter a single word.
It turned out that my secret friend was Rochelle, coming from a poor family. She had saved every penny in her pocket money in order to give me a cool gift. With the limited money, she visited a lot of stores and finally selected the lovely doll from a second-hand store. Actually, she gave me a most valuable gift with her sincere heart. However, I didn’t treasure and hurt her badly in such a cruel way. So ashamed was I that it took me a few days to pluck up my courage to face up to Rochelle and apologize. Much to my delight, she forgave me and later we became best friends. Most importantly, we found where we belonged.
