On the outside, 12-year-old Luna seems like a common kid. She loves to draw and read and her favorite subjects are science and social studies. It’s not until you get to know her that you learn Luna is anything but common.
Luna was born with heart disease and has undergone three open-heart operations. But she continues to pursue her interests in art and fashion. So when Luna was asked by the athletic shoe company Saucony to design a shoe for sale across the country, it was quite a surprise. “I got to use my art and creativity for something new that I’d never thought I’d be able to design.” Luna says.
Luna is one of six patients from Boston Children’s Hospital(BCH) who have partnered with Saucony to design their own shoes for its Shoes with Soul campaign. “Rather than just make a donation, we wanted to give some of the kids an opportunity to share their stories and their talents with the world,” says Chris Mahoney, Saucony’s manager of design. “Specifically, we wanted to give some of the BCH kids an opportunity to share their stories and their talents with the world.”
Money from the shoe sales will benefit the BCH Cardiac Fitness Program, which encourages kids to find their own exercise programs tailored according to their heart condition. “We invite patients with heart disease to an exercise program where they train not only their bodies, but their minds to become fully fit and feel strong,” says Dr. Naomi Gauthier, doctor of the Cardiac Fitness Program.
“It feels really good to help people and it’s really something I can relate to,” says Lunar. “The advice I would give to someone like me is never give up. There are a lot of kids out there with your condition and you are not alone.”

A large number of India’s poor kids receive little or no education. Even if they enter a formal school, their dropout rates are very high. Door Step School(DSS) aims to bridge the huge gap between these kids and education.
True to its name, Door Step School sets up a school right at the doorstep of kids who can’t get formal education due to a variety of reasons.
The team at DSS follows a direct model — they set up a classroom in any area, where they foresee the greatest need. They look for proper locations, and after making sure that enough resources are in place, they accept students in the area. DSS provides lessons of different levels. The organization even tries to provide classes in the local language, or whatever the students choose.
Another interesting project of DSS is a school on wheels. It uses a bus that has been changed into a classroom, which holds about 25 kids at a time.
Since it was started in 1988, Door Step School has spread from Mumbai to the neighbouring city of Pune in Maharashtra, covering a larger area and a number of kids. Now DSS has a team of more than 1,000 volunteers and teachers who change more than 70,000 lives each year.
DSS doesn’t end at kids. The organisation educates parents on the importance of sending their kids to school. Its efforts have brought education to thousands of students in the last two decades. Their belief in education for all has not only changed children’s lives but also continued the fight against one of the biggest problems India faces. All children have the right to an education, and DSS is providing just that.
8. What’s the aim of DSS?
A. To educate students informally.
B. To set up a formal school.
C. To introduce its organization.
D. To let poor kids get education.
9. Where does DSS build its classrooms?
A. In any area in need.
B. Near students’ school.
C. In the areas with large populations.
D. Far away from formal schools.
10. What does paragraph 5 mainly tell us about DSS?
A. Its future.
B. Its situation.
C. Its development.
D. Its management.
11. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. Most Indian children refuse to attend school.
B. Some Indian parents do not value education.
C. Poverty is the biggest problem in India.
D. What DSS provides has little effect.

OUCH! Shots hurt. But they prevent you from getting sick. How? By teaching your body how to fight germs(病菌). Some vaccines(疫苗) contain germs of a specific disease that have either been killed or weakened, so the shots won’t give you the disease.
Quantities of white blood cells called “B cells” defend your body. Each one can recognize something that is not part of you. When a germ gets inside your body and meets its match, that B cell becomes active. It replicates itself, and thousands of B cells create “antibodies”, which attach to the germ and destroy it.
One germ can turn into a million in a few hours. If you’re weak, you will soon feel very sick. Meanwhile, your B cells are working hard and they will catch up with the growing numbers of germs in one or two weeks. At the height of the battle, B cells can make thousands of antibodies(抗体)in a second. That’s when you start feeling better.
After the germs are defeated, your body knows how to fight those specific germs because some B cells are memory B cells. Sometimes they can live for your entire life. They make you safe from a second infection(感染). That fact is the basis for vaccination. Vaccines contain dead or weakened germs that let your body make memory B cells. If you later come across that same germ, memory B cells immediately start replicating themselves and making antibodies. Soon the germs are destroyed, and you probably won’t even feel sick.
When Edward Jenner tried using cowpox to protect people from smallpox(天花), he had no idea about B cells or antibodies. Now we know that cowpox and smallpox are similar enough that the antibodies made against cowpox also kill the smallpox virus for a time. A hundred years after Jenner, Louis Pasteur formed the basis for vaccination: using a germ against itself.
12. What does the underlined word “replicates” mean in the second paragraph?
A. Repairs. B. Reproduces. C. Replaces. D. Recycles.
13. People start feeling better after getting sick when _________.
A. germs grow at a high speed
B. antibodies reach a high level
C. memory B cells come into being
D. B cells find the germ in your body
14. What can we know about vaccines from the text?
A. Vaccines shots may give people the disease.
B. Vaccines put antibodies in people’s body.
C. Vaccines free people of various diseases.
D. Vaccines help people make memory B cells.
15. Which of the following is the best title for the text?
A. How to Fight Germs B. What Are Vaccines
C. How Vaccines Work D. Who Invented Vaccines
B 13. B 14. D 15. C
根据划线词前文“When a germ gets inside your body and meets its match, that B cell becomes active.(当一个细菌进入你的身体,遇到它的对手,B细胞变得活跃)”和后文“thousands of B cells create ‘antibodies’, which attach to the germ and destroy it.(成千上万的B细胞产生“抗体”,附着在细菌上并摧毁它)”可知,B细胞进行自我复制,变成成千上万个来摧毁细菌。
根据第三段“At the height of the battle, B cells can make thousands of antibodies(抗体) in a second. That’s when you start feeling better.(在战斗最激烈的时候,B细胞可以在一秒钟内产生数千个抗体。那是你开始感觉好些的时候)”可知,在抗体达到顶峰的时候,你开始感觉好些。故选B。
14. 推理判断题。根据第四段“Vaccines contain dead or weakened germs that let your body make memory B cells.(疫苗中含有死亡或弱化的细菌,可以让你的身体产生记忆B细胞)”可推断,疫苗可以让你的身体产生记忆B细胞。故选D。
根据文章第一段“But they prevent you from getting sick. How? By teaching your body how to fight germs(病菌). Some vaccines(疫苗) contain germs of a specific disease that have either been killed or weakened, so the shots won’t give you the disease.(但它们能防止你生病。

Tess was a five-year-old when she heard her Mom and Dad talking about her little brother, Andrew. All she knew was that he was very sick and they didn’t have money for the doctor’s bills. Only a very costly operation could save him. She heard Daddy say to Mommy sadly, “Only a miracle can save him now.”
Tess went to her bedroom and pulled out her piggy bank. She poured all the change out and counted it carefully. No chance here for mistakes. Carefully placing the coins back, she secretly went out the back door and ran to the drugstore in a corner.
She waited patiently for the chemist to give her some attention but he was too busy. So she took a quarter from her piggy bank and hit it hard on the counter. That did it! “And what do you want?” the chemist asked in an angry voice. “I’m talking to my brother from Chicago whom I haven’t seen in ages.”
“Well, I want to talk to you about my brother. He’s really, really sick... and I want to buy a miracle.” Tess replied.
“I beg your pardon?” said the chemist.
“My brother has something bad growing inside his head and Daddy says only a miracle can save him now. So how much does a miracle cost?”
“We don’t sell miracles here. I’m sorry but I can’t help you,” the chemist said, softening a little.
“Listen, I have the money to pay for it. If it isn’t enough, I will get the rest. Just tell me how much it costs.”
The chemist’s brother was a well-dressed man. He came over and asked Tess, “What kind of a miracle does your brother need?”
“I don’t know,” Tess replied with her eyes welling up. “I just know he’s really sick and needs an operation. But my Daddy can’t pay for it, so I want to use my money.”
“How much do you have?” asked the well-dressed man. “One dollar and eleven cents,” Tess answered in a low voice.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;

The operation was completed for free.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Para 1:
“Well, what a coincidence,” smiled the man. “One dollar and eleven cents. That is the exact price of a miracle for your little brother.” He took her money in one hand and said, “Now, take me to your home. I want to see your brother and meet your parents. Let’s see if I have the kind of miracle you need.” The well-dressed man happened to be a famous doctor. After carefully examined the little child, he helped the parents send the sick boy to the city’s best hospital, where he performed an operation on him.
Para 2:
The operation was completed for free. It wasn’t long before Andrew was home again and doing well. Great joy filled in the poor house again. The parents couldn’t thank the doctor enough. They simply couldn’t believe what had happened to their boy and the whole family. Mom just kept saying, “That operation was a real miracle. I wonder how much it would have cost.” Tess smiled brightly. She knew exactly how much a miracle cost — one dollar and eleven cents, plus the love of a little girl.
