Last July, my parents and I went to visit my aunt and uncle in Seattle, a city on the northwest American coast. Dad did some research and had no difficulty in finding us cheap tickets online.
On the day of our flight, we had to wake up very early. When we checked our bags in, we found that one bag weighed too much, so we had to pay a fine. After that, Dad insisted that we go and have some breakfast at the airport restaurant. We had a lot of fun watching many different people there. Then we realized it was getting late, so we rushed to the gate. It took one hour for everyone to get on the plane, but finally the door was shut and we were on our way!
I think my favorite experience during our trip was our visit to Mount Rainier, a volcano near Seattle. It was nothing like I had expected. Before we left, my aunt lent us hats to protect us from getting sunburned, so I supposed that it would be very hot. Imagine my surprise when we drove up the mountain and I discovered the top was covered with snow and ice!
My uncle led us to a small path beyond the main trails to increase our chances of seeing wildlife. We walked over a small hill, and suddenly before us there appeared a field of snow. Small wild flowers grew up through the snow; underneath the snow we could hear rushing water — a small stream. Little animals stood still to avoid being noticed; tiny birds rose into the air. It was the most beautiful sight that I’d ever seen.
    24. What ticket did the father buy for the family?
    A. Bus. B. Ship.
    C. Train. D. Airplane.
    25. Why did they pay a fine?
    A. Because they got up late. B. Because they didn’t wait in line.
    C. Because they came to the airport late. D. Because their bag was overweight.
    26. What was the writer’s most impressive experience?
    A. The flight to Seattle. B. The breakfast in the airport.
    C. The visit to Mount Rainier. D. The discovery of a small stream.
    27. Why did they choose a small path instead of the main trails?
    A. To enjoy more of the wildlife. B. To take a shortcut to save time.
    C. To avoid the snowy road. D. To avoid being attacked by animals.
    C
Nao, the first robot able to show feelings, has been created by a European research team. When Nao is sad, he lowers his head and looks down. When he’s happy, he raises his arms for a hug. Nothing is out of the ordinary, except that Nao is a robot.
“We’re modeling the first years of life,” says Lola Canamero, a computer scientist at the University of Hertforshire. “The feelings are shown through physical gestures and body movements rather than facial or verbal(言语的) expressions.”
In the future, says the scientist, robots are likely to act as companions, provide support for old people, and help people shop online. In such uses, the display of feeling will be important in making the interactions(交往) more natural and comfortable.
Nao has been programmed to copy the emotional skills of a one-year-old child. It can memorize faces, and knows the basic rules of good and bad. Based on these it can decide how to react to what is going on. The actions going with each feeling are pre-programmed, but Nao decides for itself when to display them.
Nao is also programmed to have different personalities. A more independent robot is less likely to call for help when exploring a room, while a more fearful robot will show distress if it finds something in the room that may be harmful.
Canamero’s team will take its emotional programming forward into medical applications. Part of the project will look at ways to use robots in hospitals to support the roles of doctors, nurses and parents. Children might find that a small, friendly-looking robot that can understand their emotional states makes them less anxious. “We want to explore different roles — the robots will help the children to understand their treatment and explain what they have to do. We want to help the children to control their anxiety.” she says.
    28. According to the text, Nao _______.
    A. displays different feelings in different situations
    B. is able to imitate adult emotional displays
    C. can remember people’s feelings
    D. learns emotions from facial expressions
    29. What can we learn from the text?
    A. Scientists worked on facial and spoken expressions to create Nao’s emotions.
    B. The time when Nao displays feelings has been pre-programmed.
    C. Emotional programming is used in medicine production.
    D. Robots with emotional skills can help children feel more comfortable.
    30. What does the underlined word “distress” in Paragraph 5 probably mean?
    A. Courage. B. Anxiety.
    C. Anger. D. Satisfaction.
    31. What is the text mainly about?
    A. The relationship between humans and robots.
    B. The roles that robots play in different fields.
    C. The first robot able to show feelings.
    D. The long history of robots.
    D
Not long ago, Egypt marked the 150th anniversary of the opening of the Suez Canal. The canal connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. It helped speed world trade between the East and the West. But the man-made waterway has also helped speed the rise of other things, such as invasive(入侵的) non-native species(物种). Scientists say the invasive creatures have damaged the Mediterranean’s environment and caused native species to disappear.
The number of non-native creatures has risen since the Suez Canal was widened in 2015. The “New Suez Canal” has raised concerns in Europe and brought disagreement from many Mediterranean countries. Bella Galil is an Israeli biologist who has studied the Mediterranean for over 30 years. She says much of the ecological(生态的) damage cannot be repaired. She said urgent action is needed to ease the effects of the invasive fish and other sea life.
Galil works at Tel Aviv University’s Steinhardt Museum of Natural History. She noted that the widening and deepening of the Suez Canal has created a “moving aquarium” of species. These creatures could make coastal waters almost unusable for human beings. Galil believes the number of invasive species has reached 400. That is twice the number 30 years ago. She said this is a “historic example of the dangers of unintended consequences.”
Israel is now dealing with huge numbers of poisonous(有毒的) jellyfish that affect coastal power centers and keep people from visiting the seashore. Other poisonous species, such as the lionfish and silver-cheeked toadfish, are also appearing.
Galil said the problems of invasive species can be compared to those of climate change, pollution and over-fishing. She argues that the new species have caused a major “restructuring” of the environment. This has endangered native species.
Some experts have suggested that increasing salt levels in the canal itself could create a barrier(障碍物) that would keep invasive species out.
    32. What lesson can we learn from the effects of the Suez Canal?
    A. Seeing is believing. B. Every coin has two sides.
    C. Let nature take its course. D. Everyone makes mistakes.
    33. What’s the attitude of many Mediterranean countries towards the “New Suez Canal”?
    A. Uncaring. B. Unclear. C. Supportive. D. Against.
    34. What is the ecological environment like after the Suez Canal reconstruction?
    A. It is from bad to worse. B. It remains the same.
    C. It improves a great deal. D. It has become a completely new one.
    35. Why did Galil mention climate change, pollution and over-fishing in paragraph 5?
    A. To add some background information.
    B. To stress the harm of invasive species.
    C. To solve the problem of invasive species.
    D. To compare their similarities and differences.

There are five keys to success in learning a foreign language.
    Spend the time.
By far the most important factor is how much time you are immersed(浸入) in the language.
___36___ This means spending time enjoyably connected to the language you are learning.
    Listen and read every day.
Listen wherever you are on your MP3 player. ____37____ Listen to and read things that you like, things that you can mostly understand, or even partly understand. ___38___
Build up your vocabulary, you’ll need lots. Start to notice words and how they come together as phrases. Learn these words and phrases through your listening and reading. Gradually you will be able to use them. Do not worry about how accurately you speak until you have accumulated plenty of words through listening and reading.
Take responsibility for your own learning.
If you do not want to learn the language, you won’t. ___39___ Do not wait for someone else to show you the language, nor to tell you what to do. Discover the language by yourself, like a child growing up.
    ___40___
Do not worry about what you cannot remember, or can’t yet understand. It does not matter. You are learning and improving. The language will gradually become clearer in your brain, but this will happen on a schedule that you can’t control. So just make sure you spend enough time with the language. That is the greatest guarantee of success.
    A. Relax and make sure of the time spent with the language.
    B. Focus on words and phrases.
    C. Read what you are listening to.
    D. Chat with others in the language on the Internet.
    E. If you do want to learn the language, take control.

    Text 1
M: Rose, there is a really good view over there.
W: Sorry, we can’t stop here. There is nowhere to park.
    Text 2
W: Has your sister bought her books yet?
M: She bought a medical book. The Chinese and English textbooks were sold out.
    Text 3
W: Hello, John. How are you feeling now? Somebody said you’ve been sick.
M: They must have confused me with my brother. He has been sick all week. But I’ve never felt better in my life.
    Text 4
W: You don’t mind if we don’t watch the soccer game tonight, do you?
M: You must be joking. My brother is one of the star players.
    Text 5
M: If you excuse me, I really should be off now.
W: Not yet surely. Have another drink at least.
M: No, thank you all the same. And thank you very much for the delicious meal.
W: Not at all. See you.
    Text 6
W: I’m hungry! Let’s go and get something to eat.
M: I know there is a wonderful restaurant at the end of the street. Let’s have our supper there.
W: But how far is it from here?
M: Not very far. We can walk there in twenty minutes.
W: But I’m too tired and hungry. And I can’t walk any longer.
M: Look! There comes a taxi. Hi, taxi!
    W: Oh, it’s taken already!
M: Let’s wait here for a while. I’m sure there will be another one soon.
W: OK. Let’s share the newspaper as we are waiting.
    Text 7
W: Don’t forget to read Chapter Five and answer the questions on page 99! Oh, Jonathan, just a minute — I want to speak to you.
    M: Yes, Mrs Fenway?
W: Jonathan, why didn’t you answer any questions on the homework?
M: Oh, I’m sorry, Mrs Fenway, but I read the wrong chapter last night.
W: Oh, I see. But why didn’t you read the right chapter after you looked at the questions?
M: Well, I had to do too much other homework last night.

    Text 8
W: How important are friends to you, Bill?
M: That’s a kind of strange question for this setting. Don’t you think so?
W: Well, the teacher hasn’t come in yet, class hasn’t begun, and I was just wondering about it. So, what do you think about friends?
M: I’ve never regarded them as particularly important. Perhaps that’s because I come from a big family — two brothers, three sisters and lots of cousins. That’s what’s really important to me. What about you?
W: My situation, you know, is different, so I have different ideas. To me friendship is the most important thing in life. It’s more important even than love. If you love someone, you can always fall out of love again, and that can lead to a lot of hurt feelings and bitterness. But a good friend is a friend for life.

M: Could you tell me what kind of salary you are expecting?
W: Well, in my last job I was making $1,500 a month. I understand that this position has a starting salary of around $1,600 a month.
    M: That’s right.
W: That would be fine with me. What I care about most is if the company provides opportunities for further education.
M: Yes, our employees are allowed to take up to six hours a week at full pay to attend college courses.
    Text 10
Paul and I met when we were both at university. In fact, we hated each other at first. He was my best friend Sophie’s boyfriend. We were all in the same class at school. His relationship with my friend didn’t last long, but I didn’t start to like him until we ended up working in the same restaurant. He’d become a chef by then and I’d been called in to redesign the place to give it more atmosphere. The owner of the restaurant was so pleased with my work that I had free meals there whenever I wanted. Needless to say, I became a regular though I happily paid for the meals anyway. Paul’s cooking was amazing and I realized that I’d changed my mind about him too.

根据第二段中的“On the day of our flight, we had to wake up very early.”
根据第二段中的“When we checked our bags in, we found that one bag weighed too much, so we had to pay a fine.”
根据第三段中的“I think my favorite experience during our trip was our visit to Mount Rainier, a volcano near Seattle.”
根据最后一段中的“My uncle led us to a small path beyond the main trails to increase our chances of seeing wildlife.”

A 29. D 30. B 31. C
文中第一段第二句提到“When Nao is sad, he lowers his head and looks down. When he’s happy, he raises his arms for a hug.”(当Nao生气时,他会低下头。 故选A。
文中第一句提到“Nao, the first robot able to show feelings”Nao是第一个能表达情感的机器人。同时,第二段最后一句“The feelings are shown through physical gestures and body movements rather than facial or verbal(言语的) expressions.”(科学家认为情感是通过姿势和手势表达的而不是语言或面部表情,说明Nao是没有语言功能的。) 第四段最后一句提到“The actions going with each feeling are pre-programmed, but Nao decides for itself when to display them.”(Nao的每种情感对应的动作是预先编程好的,但什么时候显示是Nao自己决定的,而不是显示的时间也是预先编程好的。) 第六段第一句提到“Canamero’s team will take its emotional programming forward into medical applications.”(Canamero的团队将要在医学APP上运用情感程序。) 第六段第三句提到“Children might find that a small, friendly-looking robot that can understand their emotional states makes them less anxious.”(如果小孩有一个小小的、可爱的又能够理解他们情感状态的机器人陪着的话,他们可能就不会那么焦虑了。)

B 33. D 34. A 35. B

由第一段的“It helped speed world trade between the East and the West. But the man-made waterway has also helped speed the rise of other things, such as invasive(入侵的) non-native species(物种). Scientists say the invasive creatures have damaged the Mediterranean’s environment and caused native species to disappear.”
由第二段的“The “New Suez Canal” has raised concerns in Europe and brought disagreement from many Mediterranean countries.”(“新苏伊士运河”引发了欧洲的担忧,并引发了许多地中海国家的分歧。)

These creatures could make coastal waters almost unusable for human beings.”(她指出,苏伊士运河的拓宽和加深已经创造了一个“移动水族馆”的物种。 故选A项。
由倒数第二段的“She argues that the new species have caused a major “restructuring” of the environment. This has endangered native species.”

    5. 根据下文“Do not worry about what you cannot remember, or can’t yet understand. It does not matter. You are learning and improving. The language will gradually become clearer in your brain, but this will happen on a schedule that you can’t control. So just make sure you spend enough time with the language. That is the greatest guarantee of success”(不要担心你记不起来或还不能理解的事情。 故A项(Relax and make sure of the time spent with the language)放松并确保花时间在这门语言上。 故选A。

______ (travel) abroad to study as well as writing books and articles.
“It was very difficult for a woman ______ (get) medical training at that time”符合“It+形容词+for sb. to do sth.” 可知答案为to get。
place second与to连用是一个固定短语,place... second to…

so前面主语是they,so表因果,根据句意主语相同,故将he改为they。
