Jeremy Savage, aged 17, and Ian Marshall, aged 16, went to the Rocky Mountains with their parents for the weekend. On Saturday morning, the two boys decided to climb Cathedral Mountain by themselves while their parents relaxed at the campsite. After three hours, they reached the top with no problems.
However, trouble began when they started the climb down the mountain. On one very dangerous part of the path, Ian fell three metres off the side of the path. Jeremy was able to climb down to where Ian was. Ian was badly injured and could not move. Jeremy had to decide what to do. He needed help, but he did not want to leave his friend. He used water from his own bottle to clean the dirt and blood from Ian's face and hands. He tried to help Ian stand up, but Ian's right leg was hurting too much. They had to wait and hope that someone would come and help them.
When the boys did not return to the campsite that evening, their parents became very worried. They got in touch with park workers and began searching for the boys. Soon more than 20 people were looking for the boys.
As night fell, the boys were still missing. While they waited for help to arrive, Jeremy gave Ian his food and water and he let Ian lie on his jacket so he would be more comfortable. As the evening grew darker, Ian told Jeremy to leave him and go back to their parents, but he still did not leave. Jeremy thought it was too dangerous for Ian to be alone. The night was cold and windy, and Jeremy used his jacket and an extra shirt to keep Ian warm.
At sunrise, Jeremy decided that the only way to help his friend was to carry him. So, they started the long climb back to their parents. Sometimes Jeremy carried Ian on his hack. Sometimes he carried him in his arms. Finally, after four hours, they arrived at the campsite where their parents were waiting. “I will always remember what Jeremy did for me,” said Ian. “He saved my life. That is the greatest thing that a person can do for his friend.”

    D. Because the boys did not return to the campsite that evening.
    6. What did Jeremy do for Ian while they were waiting for help?

When we are young we are taught that it's wrong to lie and we should always tell the truth. Unfortunately, most children lie even if they're told not to. Research carried out at the Institute of Child Study at Toronto Univercity has shown that this might not be such a bad thing. Apparently(显然地), children who tell lies when they're two years old have a good chance of becoming successful adults(成年人).
According to the research, at the age of two, 20 per cent of children lie. At the age of three, 50 per cent lie, and at four almost 90 per cent lie. By the age of 12 almost every child tells lies.
Lying needs much brain work, and the better the lie is, the more work the brain has to do. By training the brain early, researchers believe children will be able to think more clearly when they are adults.
Recent research, carried out by the Science Museum in London, has shown some interesting facts about the way we lie as adults. According to the research, the average British man tells three lies every day; that's over 1,000 lies a year. However, the average woman apparently only lies twice a day.
Most people think women are better liars(说谎者) than men although in fact they tell fewer lies. Popular women's lies include ‘Nothing's wrong, I'm fine', ‘I don't know where it is, I haven't touched it', and ‘It wasn't that expensive'.
Some people say you can lie as long as it's a white lie. A white lie is a lie told to avoid hurting someone's feelings. One of the most common lies for both men and women is ‘It's just what I've always wanted', said after opening a present from their partner.
    8. What will happen to young children who lie?
    A. They will possibly do wrong later.
    B. They're likely to succeed in the future.
    C. They will keep lying when they grow up.
    D. They may have a good chance of losing others'trust.
    9. What do the numbers in Para. 2 show about children?
    A. Older children tell bigger lies than younger ones.
    B. As they grow, they often lie about their age.
    C. The older they are, the more likely they lie.
    D. It's quite natural for them to tell lies.
    10. What did the research by the Science Museum find out?
    A. Men lie more than women. B. Women are better liars than men.
    C. Women's lies are usually not serious. D. Men sometimes have to lie to women.
    11. What's the true feeling behind the underlined part in the last paragraph?
    A. You know me so well. B. I don't like the present.
    C. You are good at picking presents. D. I haven't received a present I really like.
B 9. C 10. A 11. B
根据第一段中的children who tell lies when they're two years old have a good chance of becoming successful adults(成年人).(两岁时说谎的孩子很有可能成为成功的成年人)可知,撒谎的小孩在以后很可能会取得成功。故选B。
According to the research, at the age of two, 20 per cent of children lie. At the age of three, 50 per cent lie, and at four almost 90 per cent lie. By the age of 12 almost every child tells lies.(根据这项研究,20%的儿童在两岁时撒谎。
According to the research, the average British man tells three lies every day; that's over 1,000 lies a year. However, the average woman apparently only lies twice a day.“调查显示,英国男性平均每天说谎三次;一年就有超过1000个谎言。然而,女性平均每天只会说谎两次。”可知,男性比女性说的谎多。故选A。
A white lie is a lie told to avoid hurting someone's feelings.
    D
While the arts can't stop the COVID-19 virus or the social unrest we see in the world today, they can give us insight into the choices we make when moving through crises and chaos. The arts invite everyone to think in new ways.
We often experience works of art as something that's pleasing to our senses without a full understanding of the creative effort. Great art often shows us contradictions and crises, and we can learn a great deal from their resolutions(解决). Through our understanding of art, we can gain a deeper understanding of how we might overcome our own challenges. In understanding extremes of contrast, we can see the beauty in art with themes that are not simply pleasing for their magnificent features or qualities.
Beethoven offers a wonderful example of moving artfully through crises and chaos. He composed his Symphony No. 9 as his hearing loss became more and more pronounced. The opening of the symphony seems to come out of nowhere, from near silence in the opening to a full expression of what many consider to be the joy of freedom and universal brotherhood with Schiller's Ode to joy(欢乐颂). Beethoven appears to have created a work of art that not only freed him from his personal struggles, but one that also speaks to the joy of living together in peace and harmony.
Have a dialogue between the two opposing parts and you will find that they always start out fighting each other until we come to an appreciation of difference—a oneness of the two opposing forces. The arts offer many lessons that can help us gain the knowledge we need to move more confidently in today's competitive and uncertain environment. An openness to arts-based solutions will give you more control over your future.
    12. What value does art have beyond pleasing people's senses?
    A. It brings people inner peace.
    B. It contributes to problem-solving.
    C. It reduces the possibility of crises.
    D. It deepens understanding of music.
    13. What can we learn about Beethoven's Symphony No. 9?
    A. It celebrates freedom and unity.
    B. It aims to show crises and chaos.
C It opens with Schiller's Ode to Joy.
    D. It is unfinished due to his hearing loss.
    14. What is the author's suggestion on dealing with conflicting forces?
    A. Leaving things as they are.
    B. Making a choice between them.
    C. Separating them from each other.
    D. Engaging them in a conversation.
    15. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
    A. How COVID-19 changes art
    B. Essentials of Symphony No. 9
    C. Moving artfully through crises
    D. Joy in the eyes of Beethoven
B 13. A 14. D 15. C
根据文章第二段第二句“Great art often shows us contradictions and crises, and we can learn a great deal from their resolutions(解决).(伟大的艺术作品向我们展示冲突与危机,我们能从它们的解决中获得启示。)”
根据文章第三段第三句“The opening of the symphony seems to come out of nowhere, from near silence in the opening to a full expression of what many consider to be the joy of freedom and universal brotherhood with Schiller's Ode to joy(欢乐颂).(喜乐的《欢乐颂》,这首交响曲的开头似乎毫无来由,从几乎寂静的开头,许多人认为是对自由的喜悦和全世界兄弟般的情谊的充分表达。)” 故选A。
根据文章第四段第一句“Have a dialogue between the two opposing parts and you will find that they always start out fighting each other until we come to an appreciation of difference—a oneness of the two opposing forces.(如果你让对立的这两个部分进行对话,你就会发现它们总是从一开始就互相争斗,直到我们对它们之间的差异有了一个正确的认识——这两个对立的力量是一体的。)”
根据第一段“While the arts can't stop the COVID-19 virus or the social unrest we see in the world today, they can give us insight into the choices we make when moving through crises and chaos.

A. pretend假装;B. forget忘记;C. refuse拒绝;D. expect期望。根据“it must be direct.” 故选A项。
A. hold on坚持;B. put away把……收起来;C. look through浏览;D. pick up拾起。根据“after blaming(责备) him or her for a mistake”可知,再错怪别人之后,道歉时不要浏览信件。故选C项。
