International Tiger Day is an annual celebration to raise the awareness of tiger conservation. It's held on 29 July. Governments and citizens across the world organize awareness programs on that day to spread the importance of protecting tigers.
From ancient times, tigers were the subject of constant attraction for their beauty, size and sometimes mythical stories related to them. People's fascination (迷恋) for tigers is obvious from the fact that tigers are still a part of many national symbols and flags. Tigers are the largest cat species. Unfortunately, the population of tigers is fast decreasing. Every part of tigers from tail to skin to nail is traded in the illegal market for very high values. Many tigers are hunted, which is one of the key threats to their existence. They are also caught and raised as pets. 97 percent of the world tiger populations decreased in the last 100 years and only 3,890 tigers are left. If tigers get extinct, we will lose a species. And it also means that enough forests have been destroyed, which may endanger many other species.
For us, tigers are symbols of wildlife's fighting for survival. It reminds us of the dangers we face because of people's over-exploitation (过度开发) of the nature. It's an opportunity as well. Many efforts are on the way to double the tiger population by 2022. Strict national and international laws are against hunting and trading tigers. As a result, the number of tigers in the wild has risen for the first time in more than 100 years. Even though this is just a small increase, it's a huge symbolic victory in our efforts against the destruction of forests and wildlife. It's very important that we all join together in this effort, not only to save tigers, but also to save our forests.
    4. What can we learn about International Tiger Day?
    A. It's celebrated on 29 June.
    B. It's held once every four years.
    C. Some activities are held worldwide for it.
    D. Lots of money is collected on that day.
    5. According to Paragraph 2, how do people feel about tigers?
    A. Tigers are uncommon.
    B. Tigers can be used to show a nation's spirit.
    C. Tigers are very dangerous animals.
    D. Tigers might destroy their homes.
    6. The population of tigers is fast decreasing mainly because__________.
    A. they are hunted for trade in illegal markets
    B. they are not as healthy as before
    C. many people keep them as pets
    D. some of them are kept in zoos
    7. Which of the following may the author agree with?
    A. The lack of food is the key threat to tigers' existence.
    B. The population of tigers has been doubled.
    C. We've got great success in protecting tigers.
    D. We should put more effort into protecting tigers.
If it had not been for Fan Jinshi and her team, the world cultural heritage at Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes in a remote Chinese desert might have long been destroyed by sand, weather or humans.
Born and raised in Shanghai, Fan has spent half a century fighting an uphill battle to preserve the ancient Buddhist wall painting at Dunhuang, in Northwest China’s Gansu Province. The 1 651-year-old Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes are a huge collection of Buddhist art — more than 2 000 buddha figures and 45 000 square meters of paintings spread among 735 caves. It is China’s first UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Archaeologist Fan was sent to Dunhuang after graduation from Peking University in 1963. While in Dunhuang, a remote village in the desert then, Fan lived in an abandoned temple. At first, she did not even dare to go out to the toilet at night. To protect the treasures from sand and dampness, Fan and other workers put doors on the caves, planted trees and started monitoring temperature and humidity(湿度) in the caves. They also controlled the number of visitors.
In the late 1990s, with tourism booming nationwide since national holidays were extended, the local government planned to go public with Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes, but found Fan firmly in their way. “The heritage would have been destroyed if it had been listed,” she said.
Dunhuang Academy has now photographed and cataloged(编入目录) online all the sculptures and paintings. “Despite our efforts to minimize damage, we can’t completely stop them from being eroded(侵蚀). But the digital database will last.”
Fan was grateful when her husband joined her in Dunhuang in 1986 after 19 years of separation. Her two sons grew up in Shanghai with their aunt. “I have not been a good mother or wife. With regard to my family, I’m full of guilt,” she said. Fan, 79, retired two years ago as the director of Dunhuang Academy but continues her efforts as a national political adviser.
    8. Which of the following measures didn’t Fan Jinshi take to protect Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes?
    A. Opening Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes to the general public.
    B. Planting trees and stopping the Dunhuang Mogao Grottoes being eroded.
    C. Picturing and classifying all the sculptures and paintings online.
    D. Putting doors on the caves and monitoring temperature and humidity.
    9. When was Fan separated from her husband?
    A. In 1963. B. In 1967.
    C. In 1986. D. In the late 1990s.
    10. The phrase “in their way” in Paragraph 4 means ________
    A. Go to a place. B. Be in favor of something.
    C. Reject something. D. Give in to something.
    11. What kind of person do you think Fan is?
    A. Considerate and easy-going. B. kind and intelligent.
    C. Humorous and sweet-tempered. D. Devoted and persistent.
Recently, many e-commerce platforms, including Didi Taxi, Ctrip, Fliggy, JD ad Taobao, have been uncovered that they are cheating their frequent customers. Their ways are pretty clever. When there are new users or conservative old users, they will give a quite appealing price to attract them into registering and buying goods. However, their big data is not that friendly to the stable users and frequent visitors. The system always offers them higher price for the same products or service. How does this happen? According to the data analysis, the system knows clearly that although they feel the price is high, they will finally pay the bill. By collecting and analyzing users’ profiles, buying habits and other information, big data recommends the same products to different users with different prices.
Companies also try other ways to make money, making online consumption far more worrying. For example, video websites always offer 120 seconds’ advertisements, which drives people crazy. And even if you pay for the membership to get rid of the ads, you have to “enjoy” 15-second “private” ads. By broadcasting them, companies make huge profits — second to the membership fees. Also, owning 100Mbps network, you still put up with the slow speed when you are downloading a song. You have no choice but to become a VIP when you seek high quality services. Users seem to be lambs(羊羔) among wolves. Even though they say, “Since you have money, I’ll charge you more”, we can’t do anything about it.
It pains us that we haven’t figured out a way to deal with the problem. The only thing we can do is replacing our iPhones with Android phones if we want to buy a membership card, and applying for new accounts if we want cheaper hotels. Not finding a way to fight back, we can’t do anything but accept them passively.
    12. How does big data serve companies according to the text?
    A. By being kind to all users.
    B. By giving a discount to stable users.
    C. By attracting new users by analyzing their shopping habits.
    D. By recommending the same products with higher prices to regular users.
    13. What do we know from the third paragraph?
    A. Membership can rid you of all the ads.
    B. Only by being a VIP can you get a better service.
    C. The slow download speed is due to your poor network.
    D. Advertising income is the biggest income for video websites.
    14. What is the author’ attitude towards the chances of finding a way to fight back?
    A. Uncertain. B. Casual.
    C. Negative. D. Positive.
    15. What is the main idea of the text?
    A. The big data provides helpful information to users.
    B. We have to accept online consumption as it is.
    C. There exist many online consumption traps.
    D. Regular customers are richer.
