    Dune
Only big screens can actually match Frank Herbert’s science-fiction works. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Dune is a sad film about super powered young heroes on a desert planet. It runs for 155 minutes, but still only covers the first half of the book. A large amount of money is spent on the film, and the cast (演员阵容) is packed with big names.
    Antlers
The frightening story of this film is from native American tales about Wendigo. The director, Scott Cooper, asked Professor Grace L Dillon, the most famous expert on the subject, “I was told that it may not be an unreal story for native Americans,” Cooper said. “They truly believe in it, and it means greed (贪婪) and cruelty when we robbed all the resources from the locals.”
    The French Dispatch
The 10th film by Wes Anderson, a writer-director, brings great joy to his fans. In this film, he takes his careful style to new extreme. Behind all these carefully prepared skills is a collection of three funny short stories, which are set in a French town probably from the magazine New Yorker in the mid-20th century.
    Ron’s Gone Wrong
The cartoon is a family comedy (喜剧). Its hero, Barney, is given what seems to be a perfect toy — a shiny robot which is programmed to be his friend. But the problem is that this, robot, hardly works at all. The film’s co-writer and co-director, Sarah Smith, said, “It is completely out of control and doesn’t follow Barney’s directions. So they have to build their relationship from that point.”
    1. Who is the author of Dune?
    A. Wes Anderson. B. Denis Villeneuve.
    C. Frank Herbert. D. Sarah Smith.
    2. Which film probably makes viewers feel afraid?
    A. Antlers. B. Ron’s Gone Wrong.

When I was nine years old, I never dreamed that the small vending machine (自动售货机) I had owned would turn me into a small business owner. Wanting to inspire his daughter’s business sense, my dad brought home a vending machine he had purchased from a friend. Setting it down in front of me in our living room, he asked in all seriousness, “Do you want to start a business?” I said yes.
I owned 15 vending machines by the time I left high school, with all of the profits going toward my college fund. In addition to being a great bonding experience for my family, I couldn’t tell you how many skills I learned from starting and developing my own business that helped me gain responsibility. I learned that not every experience in life led to the comforting encouragement: Well, you were tried. You should face bravely all kinds of difficulties.
Understanding both personal and professional finances is one of the most important life lessons to learn — the earlier, the better. I had to be fearless and confident — learning these skills at a young age saved me from speaking with difficulty through presentations later in life. Truly understanding what you’re selling displays confidence and reliability, as does truly believing in it. Comprehending the ins and outs of your product and business shines through when speaking with clients though rejection (拒绝) happens all the time.
Throughout the unbelievable experience of running my own business in my childhood, I’ve learned valuable skills that help me in my school, job and personal life. I believe in the value of customer service. I go after clients and chances and understand that sometimes things don’t go my way. With the help of my parents and customers who supported me, I grew up as a young entrepreneur with skills to keep for the rest of my life.
    4. Why did the author’s dad give her a vending machine?
    A. To earn her college fund. B. To raise her business awareness.
    C. To complete her class project. D. To enrich her after-class life.
    5. What does the author think of her experience of running vending machines?
    A. It was tough but worthwhile. B. It was scary but smooth.
    C. It distanced her from her family. D. It taught her how to refuse clients.
    6. What does paragraph 3 mainly tell us about the author?
    A. Her attitude towards rejection.
    B. Her understanding of financial problems.
    C. Her insight into her business experience.
    D. Her vision of the future vending machines.
    7. What can we infer from the text?
    A. One can succeed without support.
    B. One is never too old to run the business.
    C. Customer needs matters most in business.
    D. Abilities acquired will pay off in the future.

The theatre in Shakespeare’s time was much different than it is today. Authors wrote plays for the masses, especially those who couldn’t read or write.
The theatre changed a lot during Shakespeare’s lifetime. The authorities didn’t like it and didn’t allow acting in the city itself. They thought it had a bad influence on people and kept them from going to church. Queen Elizabeth, on the other hand, loved acting and helped the theatre become popular.
The theatre in Shakespeare’s time was full of life. People did not sit all the time and it was not quiet during the performance. The audience could walk around, eat and drink during the play.
Theatres were open arenas or playhouses that had room for up to three thousand people. There was almost no scenery because the dialogue was the most important part of the play. Colourful and well-designed costumes were very important and told the people about the status of a character. Women never performed in plays, so young boys played female characters. The performances took place in the afternoon because it was too dark at night.
There was no stage crew as there is today. Actors had to do everything themselves — from making costumes to setting the stage. Plays were organized by acting companies. They performed about 6 different plays each week because they needed money to survive. They had almost no time to rehearse (排练).
The companies in Shakespeare’s time had a rank system. The companies belonged to shareholders and managers. They were responsible for everything and got most of the money when the company was successful. Sometimes they even owned their own buildings. Actors worked for the managers and after some time became a permanent member of the company. Apprentices (学徒) were young boys and were allowed to act in unimportant roles. They also played female characters in plays.
    8. Why was the theatre banned by the authorities?
    A. The queen didn’t like it. B. It affected people negatively.
    C. It kept people going to church. D. It was much different than before.
    9. What does the underlined word “arenas” in Paragraph 4 mean?
    A. Stages. B. Stores. C. Studios. D. Systems.
    10. What do we know about the actors?
    A. They were too busy to practice.
    B. They could drink during the play.
    C. They had stage crew to help them.
    D. They were rich by running acting companies.
    11. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
    A. To remember Shakespeare.
    B. To show his love of Shakespeare’s plays.
    C. To introduce theatres in Shakespeare’s time.
    D. To discuss the company’s rank system.

China is recognized as a world leader in the development of artificial intelligence and facial recognition systems. A Chinese company, the Beijing-based Hanwang Technology Ltd., says it has created a new facial recognition system that can identify people even if they are wearing masks. Engineers at the company say their system is the first to be created to effectively identify people wearing face masks.
The company told a news agency that a team of 20 people built the system in about a month. The system is based on existing technologies developed over the past 10 years. The process involved adding a collection of about 6 million unmasked faces and a much smaller collection of masked faces, the company said.
The company is now selling two main kinds of products that use the new technology. One performs “single channel” recognition, which is designed to be used at the entrances to buildings. The other product is a “multi-channel” recognition system that uses groups of surveillance (监视) cameras. It can identify individuals in a crowd of up to 30 people within a second.
“When people are wearing a mask that covers the mouth and nose, the recognition rate can reach about 95%, which can ensure that most people can be identified.” said Huang, vice president of the company. He added that the system’s success rate for people not wearing a mask is about 99.5%. However, the new system struggles to identify people wearing both a mask and sunglasses. “In this situation, all of the key facial information is lost. In such cases recognition is tough.” Huang said.
People were reacting differently to the new technology. While some citizens have been against using such tools, the majority have accepted the technology as an effective way to decrease crime and catch criminals.
    12. What did the company do to build the system?
    A. They merely used the latest technology.
    B. They gathered many face images.
    C. They employed hundreds of people.
    D. They spent about a decade building it.
    13. What can be learned about the new system?
    A. It is still in the experimental stage.
    B. It has already been used by the police.
    C. Its recognition rate of masked faces is about 99.5%.
    D. It is hard to recognize people with both masks and glasses.
    14. What is the author’s attitude towards the new technology?
    A. Skeptical. B. Optimistic. C. Objective. D. Critical.
    15. Which of the following is the best title of the text?
    A. Artificial Intelligence and Facial Recognition.
    B. China—the First to Create Facial Recognition.
    C. An Effective way To Decrease Crimes and Catch Criminals.
    D. A New Recognition System to Identify People with Masks.

“No 7, Jobie Nymble, takes the lead,” cried the announcer. “Just one more hurdle(跨栏) and...” Cheers broke out.
“Jobie Nymble from Riverside Middle School takes first place in the girls' 100-meter hurdles!” The crowd went wild.
“County championships(锦标赛), here we come,” screamed Jobie, patting her green track spikes(钉鞋). They were her lucky shoes and she loved them. “Next Saturday, we're taking home the gold,” Jobie whispered to her spikes, excitedly retying them.
“Don't forget, guys,” said Marisol, one of her teammates. “My birthday party is next Friday at Hidden Park.”
Next weekend couldn't come soon enough. Jobie smiled with excitement all week long. At track practice, she leaped over those hurdles faster than she'd ever leaped before. And it wasn't long before everything in her path was a hurdle: flowerpots in her front yard, sidewalk cracks on the way to the bus stop and even her little sister, Teka!
The day of Marisol's party, Jobie put on her favorite outfit: her blue shorts, an old track T-shirt from her dad, and her lucky spikes. “Perfect.” She smiled at herself in the mirror.
The party was under way when Jobie arrived at Hidden Park. She stopped by the track first, planning to do some practice.
“Jobie!” Two of Jobie's teammates rushed toward her, breathless and barefoot. “Come on,” they yelled. “You have to try the slide.”
Jobie looked toward the party area. Suddenly, she saw it. The biggest slide she had ever seen was on the far side of the park. Smiling kids zoomed down the slide at unspeakable speeds. Without thinking twice, Jobie took off her spikes and dashed(猛冲) toward the slide. Its ladder stretched to the sky, but she reached the top in no time, closed her eyes and let go.
Jobie couldn't get enough. She tried again and again. When it was finally time to go home, she unwillingly made her way back to the track where she'd left her shoes.

An auditory learner can more easily store things to memory by listening to them over and over again.”(如果你是听觉型学习者的话,就将你的阅读录音。
    5. 根据空前“To exercise your ability to recall, make a new page with only the first letter of each sentence in the text.”(为了锻炼你回忆的能力,翻到一篇空白页,只写下每句话首字母。)可知,A项“然后,尝试着只用这些首字母来背诵这篇文章。”是空前的顺义承接,先在空白页写下每句话的首字母,然后根据首字母来背诵文章,故选A项。

When she reached the place she'd left them, her heart sank. “My lucky spikes are gone!” she screamed. Jobie's teammates helped her search the whole park, but there was no sign of her lucky spikes. “So long, gold.” Jobie was hopeless, tears welling up in her eyes.
The next day, Jobie turned up in a new pair of spikes for the championships. Uneasily, Jobie shuffled her feet. For her, the loss of her lucky spikes meant the loss of the gold medal. “Next up is the girls' 100-meter hurdles,” said the announcer. Jobie took several deep breaths, and her teammates encouraged her as she walked down to the starting line. Feeling inspired, Jobie decided to try her best. In a flash, Jobie was off and cleared hurdle after hurdle. She got closer and closer, and cheers broke out. Wearing a wide smile, Jobie whispered, “No lucky spikes. Lucky me.”
