To develop one's taste in English, the most effective way is to read English books extensively. Yet one may be at a loss to choose the appropriate books, especially as a beginner. As a native Spanish, I would like to share some of my experience.
My first English novel was Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice, recommended by many English teachers and professors as an ideal book for English learners. But my experience was somewhat disastrous. I had great difficulty in understanding the novel, let alone enjoying it. It's not the vocabulary that troubled me, but rather the way Austen constructs sentences, and her way of thinking, which seemed too remote to me at that time. My fading enthusiasm was much recovered after reading Hemingway's novel A Farewell to Arms. No long and complicated sentences. And I particularly liked his brief and straightforward (简洁的) style. So my first suggestion is, as a beginner, you'd better choose contemporary novels instead of classical ones.
However, if you restrict yourself to novels you will miss a lot of treasures. English essays can at once inform you, entertain you, and improve your taste in English. The best example is Bertrand Russell's work. Its language is plain, yet you cannot help feeling the elegance and the peculiar sense of humor. His simple language enables his philosophy within the reach of ordinary people. Here comes my second suggestion — essays are indispensable.
Never follow others' recommendations and opinions blindly, however famous or influential (有很大影响的) the person might be. We should be open to various ideas, but always think and determine for ourselves. As a saying goes, one man's meat is another man's poison. With that in mind, we are bound to find out our favorite writers through reading and develop our fine taste in English.
19. What made the first English novel that the author read hard to understand?
A. Complicated conversations.
B. Sentences and Austen's thinking pattern.
C. The old-fashioned vocabulary.
D. Not knowing the social background.
20. Which can best replace the underlined word "indispensable"?
A. Necessary B. Challenging C. Relevant D. Inspirational
21. What advice does the author give in the last paragraph?
A. Choose books that challenge us most.
B. Read books that are instructive.
C. Don't be affected by others' choices.
D. Compare books before buying.
22. What is the author's purpose of writing the passage?
A. Give comments on literature works.
B. Tell beginners how to choose English books.
C. Encourage people to read more English books.
D. Recommend first class books to English learners.

The sun rises above the Arctic Ocean (北冰洋). Across the frozen sea, a white bear moves slowly.
The bear stops and sways his head from side to side. There is nothing to see but endless ice and red sky. Then his powerful nose senses what his eyes cannot: a beluga whale is nearby.
The bear follows the smell and spots a large hole in the ice where a small white whale is swimming. He silently walks toward the hole, then stops, standing still. The whale does not see the bear, whose white fur makes him appear invisible against the ice.
Finally, the whale swims close to where the bear is waiting. With terrifying speed, the bear comes to life and moves toward the whale. In a moment it is over, and the bear eats his first meal in nearly a week.
Polar bears rule the frozen sea, but their ancestors weren’t always built for ice and snow. The first Arctic bears were brown bears, a species that includes grizzly bears. They came to the icy north over a hundred thousand years ago.
No one knows for sure why these bears traveled to such a cold place. Scientists think they might have wandered north looking for food. Maybe they became trapped by glaciers and couldn’t leave. Whatever the reason, the bears never should have survived.
But they did. They got used to their new environment. Their bodies changed. Their behavior changed, too. Eventually, the bears developed into an entirely new species: the polar bear. You can see some of the characteristics that polar bears developed to survive.
Sadly, these characteristics may now threaten the polar bear’s survival. As sea ice melts due to global warming, polar bears are frequently forced to come ashore. They are poor hunters on land, which means they often go a long time between meals. The polar bear, king of the Arctic, is now classified as a threatened species.
Although the future of the polar bear is unknown, the tale of two bears continues. As temperatures rise, grizzly bears have been spotted moving north into polar bear territory. These long-lost cousins, once forced apart by nature, are coming back together again.
23. What can be inferred about the white bear mentioned in the first four paragraphs?
A. It is noisy. B. It is smelly.
C. It is starving. D. It has good eyesight.
24. What do we know about polar bears’ ancestors?
A. They were a darker-colored species.
B. They were born to live in ice and snow.
C. They had no trouble getting used to the icy north.
D. They came to the Arctic Ocean about 1,000 years ago.
25. Why are polar bears struggling to survive?
A. They are losing their hunting ground.
B. They are threatened by other animals.
C. They are spending little time on land.
D. They have difficulty reaching the shore.
26. Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A. The climate change
B. The polar bear’s favorite meal
C. The dark past of the polar bear
D. The mysteries of the Arctic Ocean
D
According to a study published in the journal Science on Friday, Chinese scientists used carbon dioxide, hydrogen, and electricity to create starch (淀粉), a type of complex carbohydrate (碳水化合物) found in plants. This new method allows the production of starch from carbon dioxide with an efficiency 8.5 times higher than the biosynthesis (生物合成) of starch in corn.
Experts believe that if this technique can be scaled up to the level of industrialization, it could revolutionize how this key nutrient and industrial ingredient is produced because it does not require farming and processing large quantities of starchy crops like sweet potato and corn, saving more water, fertilizer, and farming land.
It could also be used to convert carbon dioxide, a common industrial waste and greenhouse gas, into a consumable product. This will aid in reducing carbon emissions and preventing climate change, especially if the electricity used is generated from renewable sources such as solar and wind.
It may provide a sustainable food source for astronauts as they travel long distances in space and attempt to colonize other planets where growing food is impractical. Future space travelers may simply convert the carbon dioxide they expel into food.
According to Ma Yanhe, director of the Chinese Academy of Sciences’ Tianjin Institute of Industrial Biotechnology, starch and other complex carbs account for 60 to 80 percent of the human diet.
“Our breakthrough demonstrates that synthesizing (合成) complex compound like starch is achievable in a lab and there are many industries that can benefit from this technology.” he said.
27. Which is not a potential benefit if the technique can be used on an industrial level?
A. It will have a positive influence on climate change
B. It will generate renewable resources such as solar and wind
C. It will offer a practical food solution for astronauts
D. It will help save several sources from water to farming land
28. The underlined word in paragraph 3 can be best replaced by ________
A. transform B. transfer
C. build D. make
29. What’s the best title for the passage?
A. Starch , an important complex carbohydrate
B. The great benefits of starch
C. Chinese scientists successfully turn carbon dioxide into starch
D. Chinese scientists make contributions to climate change
30. What does the following paragraph will talk about ?
A. The process of synthesizing(合成) starch in a lab
B. Industries that can take good advantage of this technology
C. The biosynthesis(生物合成) of starch in corn
D. Starch plays an important role in human diet
