    The theme of this part of the activity is "Talking about Scenery and Culture in Travel". Through listening and speaking activities, students will be guided to further understand the physical geography and social features of Canada, and introduce cultural comparison and mention the long-distance train travel route between Beijing and Moscow. On this basis, this part will activate students' travel experience, let students continue the dialogue, further guide students to explore the fun and significance of long-distance travel, and make a comparison between Chinese and foreign cultures.

     Task 1   (PPT4-5)

    1. Describe each picture.

    Picture 1 The large photo is of Lake Moraine in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada, about 14 kilometres from Lake Louise. Like Lake Louise, Lake Moraine is fed by glaciers and gets its unique blue colour from rock flour. The mountains behind the lake are in the Valley of Ten Peaks, and they are famous throughout Canada because for many years they were on the Canadian $20 bill. Though the lake can only be reached by hiking trail, it is one of the most photographed places in Canada.

    The top right photo is of a man and a woman skating on Lake Minnewanka in Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada. The lake is about 5 kilometres north of the town of Banff, and can be easily seen from the highway.

    The middle right photo is of young ladies roasting marshmallows on sticks over a campfire while one of them is playing a ukulele, a musical instrument from Hawaii.

    The bottom right photo is of a woman hiking in a forest in British Columbia, Canada. The trees are Douglas firs.

    Answers: They will probably be talking about a beautiful alpine lake, going skating on a frozen lake, going camping, and going hiking in a forest.

    A: That’s great! There must be amazing scenery to see in China then!

    L: Yes. Daiyu and I have been to Nalati Grassland in Xinjiang. It's one of the four largest grasslands in the world. There are wide river valleys, high mountains, heavy forests, and open grasslands. You can also experience local Kazak folk customs there.

    A:Wow! Sounds amazing! How can I get there?

    D:The most convenient way is to take a plane to Nalati Airport, but I do suggest you fly to Yining first. You can rent a car and drive all the way to the Grassland. The scenery along the way is worth it.

    A:I like grassland very much. The great Canadian Prairie, you know, is so beautiful. It is as flat as a pancake.

    L: It's true. We were truly amazed to see such an open country.

    A:What do you think are the differences between Nalati Grassland and the Prairie?

    D:Maybe, the climate! In Nalati Grassland, it’s cold in winter and not warm in summer.

    L: And something interesting about it is that every spring, there is a big gathering with ethnic characteristics—horse racing.

    A:Cool! I've seen the Calgary Stampede in Canada and I'm interested to see horse racing in China.

    L: I'm sure it will be a unique experience!

    A: Anyhow, the next station is my stop! Take care and enjoy the rest of your trip!
