    Text 1:
M: We need a new sofa. This one is starting to sink in the middle and it looks shabby.
W: Yes. White wasn’t a good choice of color. The next one should be darker. Brown or blue maybe.
    Text 2:
M: When will the pizza be ready? I haven’t eaten since this morning. What about you?
W: Yes. White wasn’t a good choice of color. The next one should be darker. Brown or blue maybe.
    Text 3:
M: When will the pizza be ready? I haven’t eaten since this morning. What about you?
W: I skipped breakfast, but I had a pretty big lunch, so you can have most of the pizza.
    Text 3:
M: Would you like to play a sports game? My friend and I will have Ping-pong game.
W: Sure, but I don’t have a partner. Is that OK?
    M: No problem.
    Text 4:
M: What will you do for the holiday? I’ve got papers to write, so I probably will just focus on them.
W: How come you haven’t finished those yet? I’ve done mine.
M: I have been busy with basketball team practice.
    Text 5:
W: Thank you for changing, honey. But I think you forgot something. Go wash up before dinner and don’t forget to use the soap.
    M: Oh, Mom!
W: Don’t worry. Your sister will have your plate ready when you get back.
    Text 6:
M: Good morning and welcome to New York City. I hope your flight was OK.
W: It was just a bit boring. Before we leave the airport, I’d love to know where our tour will go in this morning.
M: Of course. I’ll first take you around Central Park and Grand Central Station, and then we will go downtown where you will be served with lunch by a famous French chef!
W; Sounds amazing! But won’t the trains and buses be so crowded to go downtown?
M: Not a problem. We arranged a special car service for tourists to take us around so we won’t have to worry.
W: OK, let’s go. I’m so excited to see the city!
    Text 7:
W: Look at you! You are so cute! Hey, does this guy have a name?
M: Yes, that’s Hopper. We call him that because of how he likes to jump around and eat a lot of carrots.
W: He seems to be getting along with the other animals, too.
M: All of the animals you see here have been rescued, and in most cases they are separated from their mothers. They’re all like brothers and sisters.
W: I have a dog and a cat at home. Do you think it would be too stressful for him?
M: Not at all. As long as your animals are well trained, it shouldn’t be a problem. You should get a cage for him, though.
W: Is he healthy, or does he need to be taken to an animal doctor first?
    M: He’s 100% healthy.
W: I’ll take him! Come here, Hopper!
    Text 8:
W: OK, Neil. I am a student journalist from senior grade. I know you just came to this new school a few months ago. Can I interview you for the school newspaper?
    M: Ok! I’m ready.
W: Neil, how do you usually get to school in the morning?
M: I usually go to school with my friends. We live very close to school, so we don’t have to take the bus. But on Fridays, my mother drives me to school.
W: Good answer. What are your favorite subjects?
M: I really enjoy physical education class. I love to go outside, play games, and have fun. I like English, too, but some of the words are hard to read and the grammar is hard, too. Science is the most difficult for me.
W: That’s OK. You’re doing well. One last question: how do you feel about going to school in America?
M: I like it here. At first I was scared, but I like my friends and my teachers. I hope that one day I can speak English fluently.
W: Well, I believe you will. Keep up the good work, Neil.
    Text 9:
W: Did you get your new schedule? Let me see, I want to know if we are in some of the same classes.
M: Sure. Hey, look! We’re both in CAPP together! I’m not sure what it is, but let’s sit together.
W: It is called Career and Personal Planning. Every grade 12 student has to take it.
M: Do you know what it’s all about?
W: It teaches us about the business world. You know, how to write resume and how to find a job. It also helps us discover our strengths, weaknesses, and interests.
M: Oh, I see. So... since I am curious and like adventure, I might be a good reporter. What do you think is your best quality?
W: I’d say... you can always count on me if you need something. And I always do what I say I’m going to do.
    M: Great!
W: Ha-ha. We also have to volunteer at a job for one weekend. If you want, I can get you a job at my dad’s athletic store.
M: I’d rather work with someone I know. My brother is building his house right now, and he could use the help.
W: Anyway, it certainly won’t be dull. At least it teaches us life skills.
M: I agree. I’m still trying to figure out why algebra is so important.
    Text 10:
W: Good morning, students. These are your morning announcements for Monday, December 10th.A reminder to all students that due to the construction of the new cafeteria, students are asked to eat in the gym. This means lunch-time sports will be moved to the outer courts until further notice. The last of our midterm tests will be held this week from the 12th to the 14th. However, there has been a slight change to the dates and the places of the exams. Last year, the English exams were on Wednesday, the math exams on Thursday, and the the history exams were held on Friday. This year the teachers have agreed, after listening to students’ suggestions, to switch the dates of the math and history exams. As for the places, please check the message board in the main hall, or ask your teachers for a schedule. Tomorrow, we will have a special guest coming to visit us just before our Christmas concert. As you know, one of our previous graduates won a gold medal in the last Olympics. He will be here to sign shirts and take pictures with students after an introduction by our P.E. teacher. Finally, the headmaster asks you to remind your parents to get here early for the concert. Although there will be enough seating in the gym, the parking lot gets full very quickly. That’s all for the announcements. Have a good week, everyone.

In August 2017, Southeast Texas was underwater. Hurricane Harvey dumped five feet of rain in some areas, and nearly six feet of storm surge(风暴潮) made sure that the water had nowhere to go but into the houses, businesses, and lives of thousands of residents. More than 100 people died and $125 billion in damage was recorded before the waters went down weeks later.
About 30 miles due west of Houston, Katy, Texas, a former farm town of 18,000 residents, took a hard hit. Nearly 700 of its homes and 80 businesses were damaged or destroyed. But locals didn't wait for the rain to stop before opening their doors, refrigerators, and wallets to first responders, neighbors, strangers, and even pets.
Beaver Aplin, owner of the popular Buc-ee's chain of convenience stores, was preparing for the grand opening of his newest location just outside Katy. The 50,000-square-foot store was fully stocked with everything from food, water, and toiletries to batteries and Band-Aids. When the storm hit, Aplin opened the store early without thinking twice. He put the word out to first responders, telling them to take what they needed, free of charge.
Meanwhile, locals ran, drove, and paddled to rescue their neighbors stuck in the water. When the water was too deep, rescue came by boat. Pat Lester drove his air-boat into town from his home on the outskirts(郊外). He had seven life jackets, so he scooped up seven people at a time, starting with pregnant women, the elderly, and anyone who was ill.
These are just a small part of the stories of heroism that came out of Katy and all over Texas during one of the worst natural disasters the country has ever seen.
Even first responders coming from outside Katy could instantly feel the town's selfless spirit. ''We helped people in lots of other areas too, but Katy was amazing. Neighbors were going from house to house checking on people and helping everyone they could, '' David Scherff told Katy Magazine.

Chinese female scientist Tu Youyou won the 2015 Nobel Prize in medicine on October 5 for her discoveries concerning a novel treatment against Malaria(疟疾). This is the first Nobel Prize given to a Chinese scientist for work carried out within China.
Tu shared the prize with Irish-born William Campbell and Satoshi Omura of Japan, who were honored for their revolutionary anti-roundworm treatment. 84-year-old Tu is awarded this prize for her contribution to cutting the death rate of malaria, reducing patients’ suffering and promoting mankind’s health. Although she received several medical awards in the past, the 2015 Nobel Prize is definitely the most privilege reward that recognizes Tu’s dedication and perseverance in discovering artemisinin(青蒿素), the key drug that battles malaria-friendly parasites(寄生虫).
However, her route to the honor has been anything but traditional. She won the Nobel Prize for medicine, but she doesn’t have a medical degree or a PhD. In China, she is even being called the “three-noes” winner: no medical degree, no doctorate, and she’s never worked overseas. No wonder her success has stirred China’s national pride and helped promote confidence of native Chinese scientists.
The fact that Tu has none of these three backgrounds reminds us that science should be more accessible to all. One shall be able to become a scientist no matter what kind of background he or she comes from, as long as one dives into scientific research. There have been discussions on people who really love science but are never able to achieve much during their whole life. Their contributions can never be ignored. They work so hard to prove the wrong way so that the future researchers will be closer to the right one.
As the first Chinese mainland Nobel Prize Winner of natural science award, Tu’s record-breaking winning also serves as a reminder to those who are too eager for instant success. Science is never about instant success. Tu spent decades on scientific research before its value is officially acknowledged. There is no way to measure how much one devotes to science and compare it with how much reward he or she may get.

      C. The Nobel Prize is the first award to recognize her work from www.2abc8.com
      D. Her discovery of artemisinin has helped to cut Malaria death rate
84-year-old Tu is awarded this prize for her contribution to cutting the death rate of malaria, reducing patients’ suffering and promoting mankind’s health.

What do you do at the end of the day when you're finished with work? How you spend your free time can have a big impact on your mental health, Hobbies can help you relax and ease pent-up (郁结的) stress caused by all that time in the office or in front of the computer. But, interestingly, how you spend your free time can also impact your work performance.
Researchers at the University of Sheffield's Institute of Work Psychology in the UK found that developing hobbies can develop your confidence about how well you perform your job. But your hobby has to be significantly different from what you do from 9-to-5 work.
To study the connection between work and leisure (休闲) activities, researchers employed 129 people who worked and were active in hobbies like rock climbing, musical theater and singing. They had them complete surveys to see how serious and committed they were to their hobbies and how demanding their jobs were. Then, each month for seven months, participants were asked how many hours they spent on their hobbies and how they rated their ability to perform at work.
Researchers found that if people have hobbies similar to what they do at work and they do in an intense (强烈的) way, their on-the-job confidence can suffer. It's likely because their work and leisure time have the same mental and physical demands, so they're always feeling drained.
In contrast, people who have hobbies different from their work are happier and healthier. This is also true of those who choose a similar hobby but only participate in a lighthearted way. Those playful recreations act as a barrier between their professional and personal lives, giving them rest time to “recharge their batteries”, the researchers say.
“When we feel like we have the confidence to handle challenges in our jobs. we're more likely to be able to build a sustainable (可持续的) job and remain healthy, productive, happy and employable over our lifetimes. It's important to consider how our leisure activities might play a role in that process,” lead researcher Ciara Kelly said in a statement.
    27. Why can your hobby improve your mental health?
    A. It helps you to recover from your stress. B. It surely improves your physical strength.
    C. It enables you to behave more actively. D. It increases your willingness to work hard.
    【答案】A
Hobbies can help you relax and ease pent-up (郁结的) stress caused by all that time in the office or in front of the computer.
    28. Which of the following is advised according to paragraph 2?
A.A basketball coach goes running. B. A writer keeps a diary every day.
    C. An e game developer surfs the Internet. D.A doctor sometimes climbs rocks.
But your hobby has to be significantly different from what you do from 9-to-5 work.
    29. What does the underlined word “drained” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. Worried. B. Tired. C. Unconfident. D. Indifferent.
It's likely because their work and leisure time have the same mental and physical demands,可以得知当工作与兴趣爱好为同款项目的时候,人的精力和体力消耗都很大,因此会感觉到疲劳。
    30. How can people benefit from hobbies similar to their work?
    A. Take them seriously. B. Set strict schedules for them.
    C. Participate in them just for fun. D. Develop them into their business.

    Why Dogs Chase Their Tails
It might look like a strange activity to humans, but tail-chasing is a way for dogs to burn off some energy. In most cases, they're doing this for one of two reasons: 31..
If a dog doesn’t have anything (or anyone) to play with, it might need to entertain itself—in this case, by playing with its tail. On the other hand, the behavior could be a warning sign that your dog is becoming anxious or stressed. ''We call these displacement(替代) behaviors, similar to a human playing with their hair or tapping their foot, '' says Hartstein. ''32..''
One reason tail-chasing can be a must-do for dogs is that they start playing with their tails as playful puppies learning about their bodies.33. ''The dog then learns it can get attention from its owners when it does that, '' says Hartstein.
    34. But if your pet is doing it every day or it seems to become an obsession(强迫), you'd better watch out. A constantly bored or stressed dog might be feeling neglected. Make sure its basic needs are being met, including exercise and socialization.
35.. If the tail-chasing started suddenly, your dog might be reacting to a medical issue, like cognitive disorder, or tapeworm(绦虫), says Hartstein. The sooner you get a medical checkup, the better. ''A lot of times, owners think, 'If I just wait, it will get better on its own, '' Hartstein says. ''But (behaviors) get more intense; they get more difficult.'' With some treatment and extra training, you and your dog will both be happier.
    A. They are happy and content
    B. They're bored or they're stressed
    C. A visit to the vet is also a good idea
    D. They gradually get into the habit of chasing tails
    E. Owners often laugh at the activity and talk about it
    F. They seek to do things that can comfort themselves
    G. It’s normal for dogs to chase their own tails every now and then
In most cases, they're doing this for one of two reasons: (大多数情况下,他们这样做是为了两个原因中的一个)与B. They're bored or they're stressed
F 前文''We call these displacement(替代) behaviors, similar to a human playing with their hair or tapping their foot, '' says Hartstein. F. They seek to do things that can comfort themselves
The dog then learns it can get attention from its owners when it does that, '' says Hartstein. E. Owners often laugh at the activity and talk about it(主人常常笑并且谈论它们的这种行为)承接自然,小狗知道他们追自己尾巴的行为会逗乐主人,所以经常这样做,故选E项。
G 下文But if your pet is doing it every day or it seems to become an obsession(强迫), you'd better watch out. G. It's normal for dogs to chase their own tails every now and then
If the tail-chasing started suddenly, your dog might be reacting to a medical issue, like cognitive disorder, or tapeworm(绦虫), says Hartstein. C. A visit to the vet is also a good idea

Meeting people from another culture can be difficult. From the beginning, people may send the wrong signal. Or they may pay no attention to signals from another person who is trying to develop a relationship.
Different cultures emphasize (强调) the importance of relationship building to a greater or lesser degree. For example, business in some countries is not possible until there is a relationship of trust. Even with people at work, it is necessary to spend a lot of time in "small talk", usually over a glass of tea, before they do any job. In many European countries -like the UK or France -people find it easier to build up a lasting working relationship at restaurants or cafes rather than at the office.
Talk and silence may also be different in some cultures. I once made a speech in Thailand. I had expected my speech to be a success and start a lively discussion; instead there was an uncomfortable silence. The people present just stared at me and smiled. After getting to know their ways better, I realized that they thought I was talking too much. In my own culture, we express meaning mainly through words, but people there sometimes feel too many words are unnecessary.
Even within Northern Europe, cultural differences can cause serious problems. Certainly, English and German cultures share similar values; however, Germans prefer to get down to business more quickly. We think that they are rude. In fact, this is just because one culture starts discussions and makes decisions more quickly.
People from different parts of the world have different values, and sometimes these values are quite against each other. However, if we can understand them better, a multicultural environment (多元文化环境)will offer a wonderful chance for us to learn from each other.

It can be very challenging to meet people from another culture due to cultural misunderstandings. (要点1) Some cultures value personal relationship building while others pay less attention to it. (要点2)People from different parts of the world also have very different attitudes towards whether they should talk more and stay silent. (要点3) Even in some similar cultural backgrounds, people deal with things in different ways. (要点4)So the key solution is to better understand each other.
