Long, long ago, there was a man named Hans. He lived in a very small house by himself, and every day he worked in his garden. Hans had many friends, but the most devoted(忠诚的) friend was the Miller.
The Miller was so devoted to Hans that when he went past Han’s garden, he always picked some flowers and fruit from the tree. “Real friends must share everything,” the Miller often said, and little Hans enjoyed the good idea very much.
Sometimes Han’s other friends thought it was strange that the rich Miller never gave little Hans anything in return(回报), but Hans never thought about this. He liked to listen to the Miller talk about devoted friendship.
During spring and summer and autumn, Hans worked in his garden and was very happy, but when winter came and he had no fruit or flowers to sell, he was often cold and hungry. He was very lonely because the Miller never came to see him then.
“There is no good reason for me to see Hans in winter,” the Miller said to his wife. “When people are not happy, we must leave them alone (让他们独自待着) and shouldn’t talk to them. So I shall wait till spring comes, and then he will give me lots of flowers and fruit, and that will make him very happy.”
“You think so much about others,” answered his wife.
“But why don’t we ask Hans to come here?” said the Miller’s youngest son. “If poor Hans is unhappy, I can give him half my food.”
“What a foolish boy you are!” cried the Miller. “If Hans comes here, and sees our warm fire, and our good food, and our red wine (酒) , he will envy(妒忌) us, and envy is not a good thing to feel. It will make Hans a bad man. Also, if Hans comes here, he will ask me to give him some flour(面粉), and that I cannot do. Flour is one thing, and friendship is another. The next morning, John with Mr York takes Ginger and me to Earlshall Park. Mr York is our new groom. He will look after us and give us food to eat. Now he takes us to a large stable. We are happy to see each other.
John says to Mr York, “These horses like a long rein (缰绳).”
But Mr York answers, “Here we use a short rein. My lady wants her horses to hold their heads high.”
John comes to pat and speak to us for the last time. He is very sad because he will leave.
I put my face to him to say goodbye and then he leaves.
At three o’clock in the afternoon Mr York takes us to the front of the house. It is very big. Soon the lady of the house comes out and looks at us. She says nothing, and gets into the carriage. The next day the lady says, “York, you must put those horses’ heads higher.”
That day I have to pull the carriage up a huge hill with my head up. It is hard and it hurts my back and legs.
One day Mr York fixes the rein very tight. Ginger doesn’t like it at all. She rears up. York hits her nose and his hat falls off. She rears again, and kicks. Then she falls down, kicking me too.
They don’t put Ginger into the carriage again. I have a new partner called Max. But I have to wear that short rein for four long months. When I finish work, I feel tired and sad.

In my old home Birtwick Park I always feel that John and Squire Gordon are my friends, but here, I have no friends at all.

Look at the photo on the right! What can you see? It’s a black hole. What is a black hole? It’s a place in space where gravity pulls so much that even light cannot get out.
On April 10, 2019, people all over the world got their first look at a real black hole. Scientists say it is a landmark in the history of both man and science. The photo shows a black hole with a bright ring around it. The black hole is in a faraway galaxy named Messier 87 and is about 55 million light years from Earth.
Scientists say that the photo strongly proves that black holes are real. It also supports Einstein’s theory of general relativity(广义相对论).
