If you think engineering might be a good choice for you, a summer engineering program is a great way to learn more about the field and expand your experiences. Below are some excellent summer engineering programs.Johns Hopkins Engineering InnovationThis introductory engineering course for rising juniors and seniors is offered by Johns Hopkins University at several locations across the country. Engineering Innovation teaches critical thinking and applied problem-solving skills for future engineers through lectures, research and projects. If the student achieves an A or B in the program, they will also receive three transferable credits from Johns Hopkins University. The program runs for four or five days a week over four to five weeks, depending on the location. Most locations offer commuter programs only, but the Johns Hopkins Homewood campus in Baltimore also offers a residential option.Minority Introduction to Engineering and Science (MITES)The Massachusetts Institute of Technology offers this enrichment program for high school juniors interested in engineering, science and entrepreneurship. Students select five of 14 rigorous (严格的) academic courses to study over the six weeks of the program, during which time they have several opportunities to network with a diverse group of individuals within the fields of science and engineering. Students also share and celebrate their own cultures. MITES is scholarship-based; those students selected for the program need only provide their own transportation to and from the MIT campus.Summer Engineering Exploration CampHosted by the University of Michigan, this program is a one-week residential camp for rising high school sophomores, juniors and seniors interested in engineering. Participants have the opportunity to explore several different areas of engineering during engineering workplace tours, group projects, and presentations by students, faculty and professional engineers. Campers also enjoy recreational events and experience a university residential atmosphere in the University of Michigan dorms.Exploring Your Options at the University of IllinoisThis residential summer engineering camp for rising high school juniors and seniors is offered by the Worldwide Youth in Science and Engineering program, headquartered at the University of Illinois. Campers have the chance to interact with engineering students and faculty, visit engineering facilities and research labs at the university, and work together on hands-on engineering projects. Students also participate in traditional camp recreational and social activities. The camp runs for two one-week sessions during June and July.1.Which of the following programs lasts longest?A.Johns Hopkins Engineering InnovationB.Minority Introduction to Engineering and ScienceC.Summer Engineering Exploration CampD.Exploring Your Options at the University of Illinois2.If you choose the program of MIT, you will ________.A.pay a visit to fabulous research labsB.have the chance to win a scholarshipC.enjoy recreational activities with facultyD.experience a university residential atmosphere3.This passage may be intended for ________.A.engineering majors B.professional engineersC.high school students D.scientifically gifted childrenBQian Jiaqi, 39, who took up cycling in Beijing as a hobby, has seen a well-known route he often takes after work become increasingly crowded with fellow cyclists during evenings and weekends.“This summer on Chang, an Avenue, it’s like the Tour do France every night as cyclists on a wide range of bikes constantly try to catch each other,”Qian said.“On the avenue, traffic jams are now forming in bike lanes, as well as in those designed for motor vehicles. It’s quite funny in a way.”According to business insiders and experienced cyclists such as Qian, cycling in urban areas has become increasingly popular over the past two years in China, which was known as the “Kingdom of Bicycles”in the 1980s and early 1990s.The emergence of COVID-19, the introduction of cycle lanes, and the seeking of healthier lifestyles have helped relight the nation’s passion for cycling.Chang, an Avenue is the most popular route for cyclists in Beijing, with its two cycle lanes positioned alongside those for motor vehicles. Motorcycles were banned from the cycle lanes on May 9 last year, providing a safer and smoother experience for those turning the pedals. Chinese scholar trees planted alongside the bike lanes shade cyclists from the summer heat. The avenue is also the perfect place to observe different types of cyclists. Those such as Qian always attempt to improve their time, so it’s easy to sense their frustration when they have to stop at red lights.Others prefer to ride at a slower pace, never missing the opportunity to take photos of Tian, an men Square at sunset on their phones.Qian said, “Many people have discovered the therapeutic benefits of cycling during the COVID-19 epidemic. The measures taken to control outbreaks of the disease have resulted in the public longing for activities that give them the feeling of freedom and which are good for their health. Cycling ticks all the boxes.”4.What can we see in Chang’ an Avenue at night this summer?A.Big crowds getting together. D.To provide the bike lanes for cycling competitions.7.Where is the text probably taken from?A.The society section in newspaper. B.A sports magazine.C.The health section in newspaper. D.A science magazine.CCamelli’s duty was simple: to give back to the community where she was raised. Warren, Ohio lies just thirteen miles north of Youngstown, the former center of steel production, and now one of the neediest cities in the country. Both cities’ populations and its finance have been on the decline each year, with unemployment rates surpassing both the state and national average. But it wasn’t always this way. Thirty years ago, when Camelli was a student at Howland High School, the school where she now teaches Advanced Placement Psychology, “The poorness level was around 6%,” she says. Today, it is closer to 40%.This financial condition influences everything from the way students learn, to their ability to deal with social and emotional issues. Knowing this, Camelli created Paw Pantry. Whether it’s for food, clothes, school supplies or personal hygiene (卫生) products ,students and their parents can go on the district’s website and fill out a request form for Paw Pantry products. They can choose to pick their items up—or have them delivered—at school.Camelli mentioned Paw Pantry when she attended her high school activity in 2017. It made her former classmates aware of how their hometown has changed over the years. “Soon, money started pouring in from all over the country, all over the world,” she says.In just a year and a half since the Paw Pantry began, Camelli has received plenty of non-perishable (不易变质的) food, clothing, lunch boxes, backpacks, school supplies—even home goods, including a refrigerator, a washer and dryer, and a stove.Camelli actively shows her students the power of connection. “I’m definitely kinder because of Ms. Camelli. Ms. Camelli is a mother, but she’s also a mother figure for all of us”. Blake says “Ms. Camelli, you will never understand how happy this act of your caring had made me,” she added.Camelli is a community activist, a mental heath supporter, and by many people’s standards, she’s most certainly a hero, but she doesn’t see herself that way. And that’s what she as a teacher should do.8.What does the underlined word “neediest” in the first paragraph mean?A.Liveliest. B.Riskiest. C.Remotest. D.Poorest.9.What can we infer from the passage?A.Paw Pantry didn’t go well.B.Paw Pantry gained much support.C.Camelli was hopeful about Paw Pantry’s future.D.Many people treated Paw Pantry with doubt.10.How does Blake feel about Ms. Camelli?A.Grateful. B.Annoyed. C.Unconcerned. D.Confused.11.What can we learn about Camelli from the last paragraph?A.She feels great about herself.B.She won’t continue her teaching career.C.She thinks that she just does what a teacher does.D.She doesn’t think she has done enough.DAn all-girl team of university students from the Philippines has won a hackathon marking UNESCO’s World Engineering for Sustainable Development Day on 4 March. Ghia Luwalhati, Nicole Elizabeth Tan and Reaner Jacqueline Bool from the WONDERPETS team from Batangas State University in the Philippines used Metal Organic Frameworks, which are novel adsorbents (新型吸附剂), to turn recycled plastic bottles into a type of sponge (海绵) that is extremely porous (透水的), making it an effective means of removing pollutants from water. Better still, the sponge can be used again and again. Organized by the World Federation of Engineering Organizations with UNESCO support, the hackathon shows the inventiveness of young engineers when it comes to solving real-life problems. Some 125 teams from 23 countries around the world competed in the hackathon, with nine teams from six countries making it through to the finals. These countries are Australia, Canada, China, India, Kenya and the Philippines. Some 92% of participants were engineering students. During the first round of the hackathon, the teams were given 13 days to come up with a sustainable engineering solution to one of three challenges. These solutions display the resourcefulness of future engineers. All nine finalists have produced short videos to be shown during a 24-hour live streaming event on 4 March, World Engineering Day. The live streaming will begin in Sydney, Australia, at midday local time on 4 March and conclude 24 hours later at 7 pm local time on 4 March in San José, Costa Rica. The competition was judged by 40 engineers from 16 countries in the preliminary round and, in the final round, by six judges from UNESCO, Engineers Without Borders, the International Federation of Engineering Education Societies, the International Network of Women Engineers and Scientists, the Global Engineering Deans Council and the International Engineering Alliance. World Engineering Day was first celebrated in 2020. This annual UNESCO celebration was established to raise awareness of the basic role that engineering plays in cutting down the impact of climate change and advancing sustainable development.12.What has made a great contribution to the WONDERPETS team’s success?A.They are of great creativity.
