    第2讲 主题阅读与写作之语言学习

    【知识梳理1】
    教学建议:
    1. 要求学生在限定时间6分钟内完成阅读;
    2. 让学生之间相互对答案;
    3. 鼓励学生自己解释和别人答案不同的题目以便老师了解学生的解题思路及错误原因;
    4. 让错误较多的学生总结错误原因及注意事项。
    如何快速找主旨句

    一、如何快速找主旨句
    1,注意文首:
    开门见山,提出主题,随之用细节来解释,支撑或者发展主题句所表达的主题思想是最常见的演绎法写作方式。
    2,注意首尾呼应:
    为突出主题,作者先提出主题,结尾时候再次点出主题,这种首尾呼应的写作方法也较常见。但是,前后表达主题的句子不是简单的重复,后面的表述往往有进一步的引申或者发展的意思。
    3,注意文尾:
    在表述细节后,归纳要点,印象,结论建议或者结果,以概括主题,这是英语中最常见的归纳法写作方式。
    4,无主题句:
    有时主题句可以隐含在全文中,没有明确的主题句。必须根据稳重中所提供的实施细节来进行全面考虑,综合分析,然后找出共同的东西,归纳成一般概念。
    5,标志词:
On the whole, in short, therefore…
I agree with the opinion that…
Given all these points above, I would support the idea that…
For all the reasons mentioned above, I would prefer…

The text is mainly about ____.
The main idea/The general idea/The main purpose is ______.
What’s the main point the writer is trying to make in the last/xx paragraph?
What would be the best title /headline for the text?
This article mainly tells about the story of ____.
What is the topic of the text?
The subject discussed in this text is ____.
What does the second paragraph discuss?
The paragraph (passage) deals with _____.
What is mainly discussed in the text?

In modern society there is a great deal of argument about competition. Some value it highly, believing that it is
responsible for social progress and prosperity. Others say that competition is bad, that it sets one person against another; that it leads to unfriendly relationship between people.

题目:What does this passage mainly talk about?
    A. Competition helps to set up self-respect.
    B. Opinions about competition are different among people.
    C. Competition is harmful to personal quality development.
    D. Failures are necessary experience in competition.

On the Internet, we can read news at home and abroad and get as much information as we can. We often send e-mails
or make telephone calls to our families as well as to our friends by Internet. What’s more, we can go to school on the net, read a lot of books and even teach ourselves foreign languages. We also enjoy music, watch ball matches on the net and play computer games. With the help of the net, we can do shopping even without leaving our homes. The Internet is playing a more and more important part in our daily life.

题目:What’s the main idea of the passage?
    A. Keep away from the Internet.
    B. Surf the net.
    C. The Internet is playing an important part in our daily life.
    D. We can entertain ourselves on the Internet.

Lacrosse(曲棍球) is a popular sport in Canada. The Indians in Canada invented it. They used it to train for war. They invented this game before Columbus arrived in the New World.
People play lacrosse outdoors. The lacrosse field is seven meters long. At each end of the field there is a goal. The goal is…
There are many lacrosse clubs and lacrosse teams all over Canada. Every night Canadians can watch the lacrosse games on TV or listen to the lacrosse games over the radio.
At one time lacrosse was the national summer sport in Canada. Today it is still popular with Canadians.

题目:The passage is mainly about .
    A. How to Play Lacrosse B. Lacrosse in Canada
    C. The History of Lacrosse D. Lacrosse—A Popular Game in Canada

How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments-mostly for entertainment purposes-is fair and respectful?
Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, most zoos remain “collections” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats (栖息地) …
Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos without having learned anything meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty...
    ...
Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitat and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.

What does the author try to argue in the passage?
    A. Zoos are not worth the public support.
    B. Zoos fail in their attempt to save animals.
    C. Zoos should treat animals as human beings.
    D. Zoos use animals as a means of entertainment.

Handshaking, though a European practice is often seen in big cities of China. Nobody knows exactly when the
practice started in Europe. It is said that long long ago in Europe when people met, they showed their unarmed(无武器的) hands to each other as a sign of goodwill. As time went on and trade in cities grew rapidly, people in cities began to clap each other’s hands to make a deal or to reach an agreement. This practice was later changed into shaking hands among friends on meeting or leaving each other. “Let’s shake (hands) on it” sometimes means agreement reached.

题目:This paragraph mainly tells us ______.
    A. where handshaking was first practiced
    B. how handshaking came about
    C. about the relationship between handshaking and trade
    D. about the practice of handshaking both in Europe and in China

He wishes the holiday season would end already. His back aches, his red suit feels like a spacesuit, his cheeks have gone tight from smiling for 12 hours …
The questions from children these days are harder than ever. Now, with thousands of children expecting a father or mother serving in Iraq or Afghanistan, the questions are as heart-breaking as they are unanswerable. For example, “Can you please bring Daddy home from the war in time for Christmas morning?”
Santas also have a pretty good chance of getting sued (指控)…

题目:What would be the best title for the passage?
A.Christmas: Not a Good Festival for Santas
    B.Is Santa Claus Really Alive?
    C.A Christmas Story
D.What Does Santa Claus Do for Children?
    答案:A

    Choose the best answer.
Many people always say that listening to spoken English is too hard for them. But if you don’t understand what people are saying, how can you talk with them? It may be difficult, but learning by listening is necessary. It can be done.
As we know, different people have different pronunciations of the same word. Standard pronunciation is important for English speaking as well as for listening. In China, people from one area may not understand what people from another area are saying because of the different Chinese dialects. Standard Chinese pronunciation can help people from different places understand each other easily.
It is the same with English. If your pronunciation is not standard, it is as hard for other people to understand you as it is for you to understand them.
If you want to learn how to listen to English, the following ways are helpful.
Get some books with tapes. Do the exercises, from the simple to the difficult, step by step.
You can also watch English-language films, listen to English radio and TV programs.
Try to listen every day, even if only for a few minutes. At first you may understand few words. Don’t give up. Just listen.
Remember to read and speak English every day. It will help you to listen better. Spend an hour reading English every day and finally you will notice that you are making progress.
Talk to English-speaking foreigners as often as possible. Foreigners will speak more slowly with you, use simple words, and use body language to help you understand them. Don’t be afraid to talk to them. They won’t mind because they may have more trouble making themselves understood in Chinese.
    1. Many English-language learners think _________is too difficult for them.
A: reading English B: speaking English
C: listening to English D: writing in English
    2. Standard English pronunciation is important because _________.
A: it helped people from different places understand each other better
B: people are from different areas
C: people are from different countries
D: it helps people learn English more easily
    3. _________, and you’ll understand more words.
    A. Use simple English words B. Use body languages
    C. Listen to English every day D. Speak more slowly with foreigners
4.__________ when we talk with foreigners.
    A: Don’t be shy B: Don’t be silent
C: Don’t make mistakes D: Don’t talk about anything except weather
5._________English every day will help you to listen better.
    A: Reading B: Speaking
C: Talking to foreigners in D: All the above.
    6. What can we learn from the passage?
A: Listening to English is not so difficult.
B: We should listen to the tapes for only a few minutes.
C: Standard Chinese is not so important as standard English.
D: The foreigners have a lot of trouble in listening to Chinese, too.

Daisy has s 2 up an online learning website to teach the language to as many people as possible, all over the world. With China's fast development in the world, Daisy thinks it important for people to learn the language sooner rather than later.
Daisy has learned Putonghua s 3 the age of five. Two years ago, after she decided to pass on what she had learned, she came up with the idea for the website, kidschineseclub.com.
She said, “People are afraid to learn Putonghua. One of the main reasons is that they think it’s an i 4 language to learn, but I have had fun doing it. And I hope what I have done is easy and fun.”

I really like reading and writing short stories. These stories are usually about 6 to 20 pages long which f 1 on an interesting person, a problem which the person had, and what happened when the person tried to solve the problem. All societies seem to have an oral storytelling tradition in which people met t 2 to tell each other short stories, and in which parents told their children stories at bedtime. This was certainly true in England, in India, in Kenya, in Mexico and in Japan. Was it true in China too? In many countries, oral storytelling is still important, but in most countries now, stories are written down and p 3 in books. My favorite collection of short stories is a book called The Story Giant by Brian Patten in which a giant knows all the stories in the world e 4 one. If he doesn’t find the last story he’ll die. In the book, he gets four children from different parts of the world to tell him stories in the hope that he will find the last story so he can stay a 5 and pass the world’s stories on forever. Do you think he finds the last story?
I also like reading novels. One of my favorite novels is called Life of Pi. It is written by a Canadian called Yann Martel, and is about an Indian boy who spends a long time at sea after a shipwreck (海难) a 6____ with nobody but a tiger. What about you? Do you have a favorite novel?
Not many people read plays these days, but many people still enjoy watching them at the theatre or on television. Perhaps the l 7 popular form of literature (文学) is poetry. This is because many poems are very difficult to understand, and often seem to be written and read by very clever people. I wish I could write poems which anybody can understand.

Is there a connection between music and language? According to recent studies, the answer is yes: Music helps develop certain language abilities in the brain.
A study from Northwestern University shows that playing a musical instrument can improve a person’s hearing ability. As a part of the study, two groups of people listened to a person talking in a noisy room. The people in the first group were musicians, while those in the second group had no musical training. The musicians were found to be able to hear the talking person more clearly.
“Musicians hear better,” says study leader Nina Kraus, “because they learn to pay attention to certain sounds.” For example, when the violinists play in an orehestra(管弦乐队), they must listen closely to what they are playing and ignore the other sounds. In this way, musicians can hear certain sounds better, even in a room with lots of noise.
Gotfried Sehlaug, a doctor at Harvard Medical School, works with stroke(中风) patients. Because of their illness, these people cannot say their names, address or other information. However, they can still sing. Dr. Schlaug was surprised to find singing words helped his patients finally speak. Why does this work? Schlaug isn’t sure. Music seems to be able to make different parts of the brain active, including the bad parts. In some way, this helps patients use those parts of the brain again.
So music is not only enjoyable, but also good for us in many other ways. “Playing an instrument or singing,” says Nina Kraus, “can help us do better in school and keep our brain sharp as we get older.”
1.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?
A.Listening to a people in a noisy room can improve a person’s hearing ability.
B.Saying his name and address often can improve a person’s hearing ability.

2.What does the underlined word “ignore” probably mean?
A.hear of B.look down upon C.pay no attention to D.look out
3.How can Dr. Schlaug help his stroke patients speak?
    A.By playing music for them.
B.By getting them to sing words.
C.By teaching them to play instruments.
D.By joining the bad parts of their brain.
4.Which is NOT TRUE according to the passage?
A.Music can make the brain active.
B.Singing can help keep our brain sharp.
C.Nina Kraus doesn’t agree with the study result of Northwestern University.
    D.Music is good for people.
5.What could be the best title of the passage?
A.Ways of Playing Music B.Ways to Make Brains Active
C.Music and Language Abilities D.Treating Stroke Patients
As someone who’s been studying English for many years, you might think you know the English language pretty well. But if you overheard a British person say, “A Billy let some bees and honey in my sherbet (冰冻果露) last night,” would you understand what he meant? Probably not, but many native (本土的) speakers may not know what this person was saying either.
The example above was a sentence that a London taxi driver might say to another member of his or her tribe. In plain English, the sentence would be, “A customer left some money in my taxi last night.”
So, what exactly is meant by “tribe”? A recent article on the BBC Culture website pointed out that nearly all of us are a part of a tribe. This is a group that defines (定义) who we are and even how we speak. And with each tribe comes its own “secret language”, as the BBC called it.
If you work in a certain industry—education, for example, you may use slang (俚语) words that only other people who work in that industry would understand. Or if you live in a certain city, you might use a slang word to describe a landmark in the city, that only locals would understand.
These so-called secret languages each have their own fascinating history. In the US, for example, the underground “ballroom” (舞厅) tribe of 1970s and 80s New York City and its language was showed in the 2018 FX show Pose.
These secret words don’t always stay within their tribes, however. Words from many tribes, especially musical cultures such as rap and hip-hop, often enter people’s everyday vocabulary. For example, the phrase “to have beer”—meaning “to be in a conflict (冲突)” —was made popular by US rappers. Today, it’s widely used by native English speakers all over the world.
As BBC reporter Susie Dent wrote, “We are all surrounded by amazing secret languages, full of history and stories and in-jokes. And one thing is certain: our tribal conversations will never run out.”
6.The example at the beginning of the text is mainly used ________.
A.to prove that English is really hard for people to learn.
B.to explain to the readers what the meaning of “tribe”is
C.to teach readers how to communicate with taxi drivers
D.to show the languages of tribes are hard to understand
7.According to this passage, what does “tribe” refer to?
A.All members of a family. B.Workers in a certain company.
C.A group or class of people. D.People living in the same city.
8.What can we know about “secret languages”?
A.They mostly came from different kinds of musical cultures.
B.Some words from them are popular in everyday conversation.
C.They first started in New York City in the 1970s and 1980s.
D.They have failed to become popular among young people.
9.What is Dent’s attitude towards the future of “secret languages”?
    A.Confident. B.Worried. C.Uninterested. D.Doubtful.

As we all know, English is now an international language. It is used in many aspects. When we do business with foreigners, we often speak English. Imagine that we are visiting an English-speaking country, we must know English. When we want to learn something about other countries, we need books and newspapers in English for more and more books and newspapers in English. Once we master English, we will feel more comfortable in the outside world.
But how can we learn English well? Most important of all, I think we should develop an interest in it. Then we should go all out to listen, speak and write. Furthermore, we should practice using it whenever possible. In class, we should answer questions actively. After class, we should talk to each other in English. If we come across foreigners, we should not miss the opportunity to learn from them. If we keep on practicing like that, I’m sure we can master English in the end.

This is my English level at present. At present, I can communicate with my classmates in English simply. I also like speeches. I won the prize in the speech contest last year. And I believe that I should be able to talk with others correctly when I go to a Western country.
However, I have some problems with learning English. I can’t use the grammar rules correctly. Sometimes, I can’t express myself clearly in writing. I often find it hard to remember more difficult words.
At last, I have some suggestions for English teaching as well. I think teachers should communicate with us in English when they are in class. I also advise that English teachers can change more difficult things into simple things.
