一、阅读单选
When I was in the eighth grade, my class was assigned (指派) to be friends with the second-grade kids. I got this little girl named Shelley. The first time I saw her, she was silent and cold. She was small for her age, and she didn’t play with the other kids in her class.
I tried all kinds of things together to talk to her. I bought her toys, crayons and candies. But try as I might, nothing worked. One time, I gave her a coloring book and said, “Shelley, now you can color in it anytime.”
Shelley looked at the coloring book and then looked up at me, and finally looked away. By that, I didn’t know how I was going to get through to the little girl, but I knew I wouldn’t give up on her.
One Friday, I decided to tell her a story about my childhood. I told her that l felt lonely when I was with my classmates, and how I thought only my teachers liked me. I also told her that everyday was a battle (战役) for me and I fought back tears so people wouldn’t know how much I was hurting.
She sat there just listening, trying to decide whether I was lying or not. Finally, when my story ended, there were tears in her eyes. And then she did the unthinkable. She said, “Thank you.” From then on, Shelley was a different little girl. She started smiling and talking with other kids.
Looking back at this I’m in awe (惊叹), because all I did was to help her realize that she wasn’t alone. I didn’t ask her to tell her story, because her story is my story.

My 6-year-old granddaughter stared at me as if she saw me for the first time. “Grandma, you are an antique,” she said. “You are old. Antiques are old. You are my antique.”
I was not satisfied to let the matter rest there. I took out a dictionary and read the definition(定义)to Jenny. I explained, “An antique is not only old. It’ s an object existing since or belonging to earlier times...a work of art...a piece of furniture. Antiques are treasured, “I told Jenny as I put away the dictionary.” They have to be handled carefully because they sometimes are very valuable. To look as good as an antique, the object has to be at least 100 years old.”
“I’m only 67,” I reminded Jenny.
We looked around the house for other antiques, besides me. There was a desk that was handed down from Aunt Rome to another and finally to our family. “It’s very old,” I told Jenny. “I try to keep it shiny and I show it off whenever I can. You do that with antiques.”
There was a picture on the wall bought at a garage sale. It was dated 1867. “Now that’s an antique,” I said with pride. “Over 100 years old.” Of course it was marked up and scratched(刮坏) and not in very good condition.” Sometimes age does that,” I told Jenny. “But the marks are good marks. They show living, or being around. That’s something to show with pride. In fact, sometimes, the more an object shows age, the more valuable it can become.” I believed this was important for my own self-worth.
Our tour of antiques continued. There was a flower vase on the floor. It had been in my house for a long time. I was not certain where it came from but I didn’t buy it new. One thing about antiques, I explained to Jenny, was that they usually had a story. They’d been in one home and then another, handed down from one family to another, traveling all over the place. They’d lasted through years and years. They could have been thrown away, or ignored, or destroyed, or lost. But instead, they survived.
For a moment, Jenny looked thoughtful. “I don’t have any antiques but you,” she said. Then her face brightened. “Could I take you to school for show and tell?”
“Only if I fit into your backpack,”I answered. And then Jenny’s antique lifted her up and gave her a hug that would last through the years.

I noticed a dad and his son at the park. His son wasn’t able to communicate, but he seemed content sitting in the sand. The dad explained to me that his son could only make some sounds. The boy had been in speech therapy (言语治疗) for years. After so much time in therapy, the boy was able to maintain eye contact for a few seconds and the father was delighted by the achievement! He told me how expensive the therapies for his son’s specific needs were and what a pleasure it was to see all of the years of hard work paid off. The father and son connected, and those few seconds of eye contact meant the world to that dad!
As we talked about therapy, the dad shared with me that his goal for his boy was to someday be able to go for ice cream together. He said his father used to take him out for ice cream and he hoped he could do the same with his child. Suddenly, the son stopped putting his fingers in the sand, looked at his father and said, “Hi.” Seconds later the boy went back into his own world. The dad wanted to say something, but he couldn’t. His love for this boy was so great that the words would not come. But what did come were tears. Those tears conveyed (传达) how proud he was of his son. A father loves his child more than words will ever be able to express.
Although they were strangers to me, I am honored to have shared this precious celebration of accomplishment in that boy’s young life. I hope someday they will be able to go for ice cream and have a beautiful father and son outing.
This event touched me deeply and made me consider my relationship with my own father. I hope that as they communicate further, more and more memories will be created for them to share. I am convinced the feelings held by all awesome fathers —their hard work, their love, their pride, and their tears of love—are all the same.
9.What do we know about the boy?
A.His eyes were injured. B.He loved going to the park.
C.He couldn’t make any sound. D.He had made progress through therapy.
10.What can you learn from the underlined sentence in Paragraph 2?
A.Only words convey a father’s love. B.A dumb father loves his child more.
C.Father’s love is silent but warm in heart. D.If your father says he loves you, then it’s fake.
11.What does the author want to tell us with this story?
A.All parents value their kids’ achievements.
B.A father’s unconditional (无条件的) love is touching.
C.Healthy relationship with a father is good for children.
D.Children with speech disorders deserve more attention.

Britain’s youngest app developer
A 13-year-old boy, Aaron Bond, designed a website and released (发布) three successful smartphone apps (应用软件). This made him Britain’s youngest app developer in 2011.
“I have been interested in computers since I was young”, says Aaron, as he explains how his childhood interest in web design has turned into a business work.
The idea of inventing an app came from his friend Sebastian, aged 16, when the two teenagers were travelling to school one day by bus. Sebastian gave Aaron a challenge. “Do you think you can make a smartphone app?” he asked. Aaron said that he thought he could, but that he would need a new computer and some instructional materials.
So Sebastian lent him a computer and Aaron taught himself how to design an app using books and videos. “It took me seven months to learn how to do it”, says Aaron. While he used his computer skills to build the app, Sebastian worked on developing the characters and improving the design for their game Spud Run. The boys set up a company and in May 2011, Aaron and Sebastian produced the game.
The friends have now produced another app, lice SOS: this time designed to help in an emergency (突发事件). Once again, the idea came while the boys were travelling on the bus when a passenger suddenly fell down. “Nobody knew the man but we realized that if we got into his phone, we would find useful contact numbers,” says Aaron. Unluckily, the phone was locked. The new app stores phone numbers of close family or friends along with important medical details. The app can be seen on the home screen and will work even if the phone is locked. “If the emergency services have to contact relatives in an emergency, this will save them a lot of time and could save lives”, says Aaron.
When asked about his plans for the future, Aaron replies: “At the moment we are improving the design of our apps and we are going to develop new characters and levels for Spud Run.” He might go to university to study computer programming in the future.

My father loves his garden. He planted some seeds in it. But at that time, I didn’t understand why working in the dirt excited him so much.
Unluckily, in early May, my father was seriously hurt in an accident. He had to stay in bed for a while. I didn’t want my father to worry, so I said that I would take care of his garden until he was well. I thought that the little plants would continue to grow as long as they had water, and luckily it rained very often, so I didn’t think much about the garden.
One Saturday morning, my father said to me, “Christine, the vegetables should be about ready to be picked. Let’s have a salad today!” I went out to the garden and was sad to see that many of the lettuce leaves and carrots had been half eaten by bugs (虫子). There were hundreds of bugs all over them! I had no choice but to go to the nearest store to buy some vegetables.
When I gave the salad to him, he said, “Oh, Christine, what a beautiful salad! I can’t believe the carrots are this big already. You must be taking very good care of my garden.” I felt a bit guilty. After that, I looked after the garden carefully, and weeks later I was finally able to pick some.
I carefully made a salad and took it to my father. He looked at it with a smile. “My good girl, the carrots are smaller in this salad, but they taste better.”
Now, I better understand how putting a lot of effort into caring for something can help you enjoy the results more, however small they may be. Perhaps this was one of the reasons for my father’s love of gardening.
