I have just completed my first year as a volunteer befriender (帮扶人)with the North Lanarkshire Befriending Project. I was matched with a young girl called Amy, who had been struggling (挣 扎) with different aspects of her life and suffered from low self-confidence.
At first, I was a bit worried about whether Amy would like me or want to spend time with me. These fears soon disappeared when I quickly formed a strong bond (关系) with Amy. She trusted me and felt like she could depend on me.
During our time together, I took Amy out twice a month. I must say, collecting her for the first time and deciding what we were going to do was difficult! I quickly learned that it was best to plan what we would do on the next outing before collecting her.
Over the course of the year we got to do lots of things: cinema trips, bowling, ice-skating, and shopping. I have noticed a positive change in Amy since I met her. At first she lacked (缺乏) confidence. In a 1:1 situation she was very talkative and open, but when another person joined the group I noticed she became more reserved (寡 言 少 语 的) — especially around other teenagers. Thinking about this, I planned more public outings over time. Amy was nervous at first, but she grew in confidence over the year.
I feel like befriending has been a very positive thing for Amy. She really enjoyed our outings. Her outlook on life (人生观) improved noticeably during the year too. I talked to her about my experience at university, and she then started to talk more about further education, something which I am told she had never really considered as a choice before.
I feel that we all have a social responsibility to help others in our communities, and befriending is just one way in which I can do something meaningful.
    24. How did the author feel when starting her befriending project?
    A. Regretful. B. Confident. C. Nervous. D. Excited.
    25. What did the author learn from her first outing with Amy?
    A. Hard work pays off.
    B. Friendship is the key to success.
    C. The simplest way is the best way.
    D. Planning ahead is a matter of great importance.
    26. How has the author's befriending project turned out?
    A. It has helped her reach her educational goals.
    B. It has made her famous in North Lanarkshire.
    C. It has offered Amy a chance to go to college.
    D. It has made positive changes in Amy's life.
    27. What is the author's purpose in writing the text?
    A. To share her story as a volunteer.
    B. To introduce her best friend Amy.
    C. To discuss the benefits of volunteers.
    D. To show how to make friends with strangers.
    C
In the American Journal of Physics, three high school students from Portugal, along with their teacher, have reported the results of their project. The students programmed an add-on (附加装置)board for the Raspberry Pi computer to map out Earth's magnetic field (磁场).
The European Space Agency teamed up with the U.K.'s Raspberry Pi Foundation to hold a competition for high school students. The competition, known as the Astro Pi Challenge, required the students to program a Raspberry Pi computer to be run aboard the International Space Station (ISS).
The students used the data (数 据) from the space station to map out Earth's magnetic field and compared their results to data provided by the International Geomagnetic Reference Field (IGRF国际地磁参考场). “
“I saw the Astro Pi Challenge as a way to increase my knowledge and skill set, and it ended up introducing me to the exciting reality of the practical world,” Lourenço Faria, co-author and one of the students of the project, said.
The IGRF data is updated (更 新) every five years, so the students compared their results, taken in April 2021, with the latest IGRF data from 2020. They found their data differed from the IGRF results. This difference could be because of the magnetic field inside the space station.
The students repeated their tests using another set of data from ISS and found a good improvement in results. The students thought it astonishing that the main features (特征) of Earth's magnetic field could be remeasured (再次测量) with only three hours' worth of computing from their low-cost add-on board in the space station.
Although this project was carried out aboard the space station, it could easily be applied to ground-based measurements using apps for smartphones.
“Taking measurements around the world and sharing data through the Internet or social media would make for an interesting science project that could connect students in different countries,” said Alex Mora, manager of Raspberry Pi Foundation.
    28. What did the three students do in the Astro Pi Challenge?
    A. They made a new Raspberry Pi computer.
    B. They computed Earth's magnetic field.
    C. They developed new apps for ISS.
    D. They helped the IGRF collect data.
    29. What did Faria say about the Astro Pi Challenge?
    A. It should include more students from different countries.
    B. It made him realize the importance of knowledge.
    C. It was a great chance for self-improvement.
    D. It should get more international attention.
    30. What does the underlined word“ astonishing” in paragraph 6 mean?
    A. Necessary. B. Impossible. C. Dangerous. D. Surprising.
    31. What was Mora's attitude to the project?
    A. Uncaring. B. Doubtful. C. Curious. D. Positive.
    D
Clank, clank, clank, clank. Slowly the train climbs the steep (陡峭的) hill. You should look at this train closely because it is very special. It can reach a speed of 120 kilometers per hour, it can go upside down and sideways, and it can accelerate (加速) as fast as a Ferrari. Look at the passengers. They know about this vehicle and they look nervous. In fact, some even look fearful. That's not surprising, as this is no ordinary train ride; in fact, this train is a roller coaster!
Roller coasters fly up and down hills, move around corners, twist, turn, and even go upside down. But there's a secret to their twists and turns. On a roller coaster ride, the amount of energy needed to go up a hill or through a loop (圈) is always less than the energy gained by coming down the previous hill. Believe it or not, all of the energy needed for a roller coaster ride is provided in the first drop.
Roller coasters are designed by special engineers. These engineers need to understand mathematics and, especially, physics. They need to work out exactly how much energy will be generated in the first drop. This energy is called potential energy(势能). Next, the engineers must figure out how much energy each of the following twists and turns will use. This is called kinetic energy(动能). It's important work. If the engineers work out wrongly, the roller coaster may run backward and get stuck in the middle of the track!
Nobody wants the roller coaster to get stuck, but it can happen. On rare occasions, a strong wind or a heavy load of passengers may slow the roller coaster just enough to stop it from climbing the next hill. Some roller coasters actually use this as part of their design.
As long as people are looking for a thrill (刺激), roller coasters will be there to give it to them. Hiding against the force of gravity provides a great feeling that is hard to beat. For many people, roller coasters are the ultimate thrill ride.
    32. When does a roller coaster get all of the energy it needs?
    A. When it goes through a loop.
    B. When it moves around corners.
    C. When it goes up the second hill.
    D. When it falls down the first drop.
    33. Which of the following best describes roller coaster engineers' job?
    A. Boring. B. Well-paid. C. Demanding. D. Dangerous.
    34. What does the underlined word “this” in paragraph 4 refer to?
    A. The roller coaster's getting stuck.
    B. The roller coaster's moving slowly.
    C. The roller coaster's climbing steep hills.
    D. The roller coaster's carrying heavy passengers.
    35. Which of the following is a suitable title for the text?
    A. Gravity can be fun
    B. The power of a train
    C. What an exciting ride!
    D. The world's fastest roller coaster

    Plan a Budget-Friendly(省钱的) Summer Vacation
It’s never too early to start thinking about your summer vacation. Deciding where to go and what attractions to see can actually be a fun and exciting part of the experience—particularly when you find ways to save your travel dollar.
    36
        Rethink your “summer vacation”.
If your summer vacation window is wide open, why not skip July and August? The flights and accommodations are about 25% cheaper in the spring or early fall. If you must travel during the busy season, you can still save by being flexible. 37 Flying out on a Tuesday instead of a Friday could save you a bit of money, and flying in the afternoon will likely be cheaper than a morning flight.
       38
It’s always in your best interest to book your summer vacation early. If you plan on flying to your destination, for example, it will be much easier to find seats on your preferred flights if you book in March than if you were to wait until the last minute. The same applies to hotels, where prices are based on supply and demand.
        Use the right websites.
There are a lot of websites competing for your travel dollar. 39  For example, when you make five reservations with Booking.com, you can have access to their “Genius Program” which gives you 10% off as well as early check-in and late check-out.
        Consider a tour.
With so many places to see and things to do, planning a trip can wear you out quickly.  40  Seasoned tour operators, such as Trafalgar, take the stress out of travel so all you have to do is show up and enjoy yourself. More importantly, a guided vacation represents a significant saving.
    A. Plan your flights.
    B. Book in advance.
    C. In that case, a tour is a fantastic choice.
    D. Choose the one that offers the best service.
    E. That competition has led to many benefits for travelers.
    F. When booking flights, choose the least popular travel times.
    G. Here are tips to plan a summer vacation within your budget.

“Surprise!” was the first thing I heard when I opened the door. My family and friends were all smiling at me. There were colorful balloons all over the house, a big poster saying “HAPPY BIRTHDAY”, and of course a cake with 12 candles. It was a wonderful feeling. I knew that I had finally turned twelve and I might possibly get the thing I wanted most.
I saw my mom and dad coming towards me with a small box which seemed to be a birthday present. When I opened the box, I couldn’t believe my eyes. I had really gotten a mobile phone! Throwing myself into their arms, I let out a cry of joy, “Thank you! I love you guys!”
“You’re welcome. We knew this was going to make you happy but we didn’t only get you this because you turned twelve, but also because you are doing well in school. We expect you to keep getting good grades.”
“Of course I will.” I said confidently.
As soon as I got to school the next morning, I was showing off my phone and asking everyone for their number. It was cool how I got so many contacts on the first day.
It felt like I didn't even exist in that class anymore. I wouldn’t pay much attention to the teachers because I was too busy on my phone. However, I didn’t get caught using it.
I am pretty sure that the teacher did notice that I stopped paying attention to her because a week later we took a test and I failed. What was worse, my mom had to sign the test.
It was hard to show my mom the test. She was used to seeing As and Bs on my tests. Finally, I showed it to her, and she couldn’t believe it. She was angry but most of all, she was disappointed.
    注意:
    1. 续写短文的词数应为150左右;

    67【参考答案】
Realizing the reason for my failure, my parents started to dislike the fact that I had a phone. They said they had noticed that I never paid attention to things around me. It was like I had my own little world. So they thought we didn’t communicate as much as we used to. They regretted having given me a phone, which made me ignore the family and study.
Then I started to wonder if I was wrong. A week later I tried going a whole day without a phone and it didn’t go that badly. I had so much fun because I was actually spending time with my family and paying attention to them. From that day, I had a different opinion towards phones. Phones really take you away from the rest of the world, but you do have to spare some time to spend with your family and not get stuck with your phone all day.

    Text 7
M: It’s lucky that we rode our bike here instead of driving.
W: Yeah. Look at all those cars there. They’ll never get in.
M: You’d better follow me closely. I don’t want to lose you.
    W: Don’t worry. I’ll keep up.
M: We go in over there-Gate B. Peter and Tom are right behind the goal.
W: Oh, do we have to stand up all the time?
    M: That’s right.
W: I hope we can see the match clearly.
M: That’s why we’ve come early. We can choose a good place.
    Text 8
W: Why do you want to leave your job, Bill?
M: The pay is too low. And I’ve got tired of working in a fast-food restaurant.
W: Have you found a new job?
M: No, I want to rest.
W: Do you want to enjoy a long vacation?
M: No. I’ll go back to college. I cannot find a good job now because l don’t finish college.
W: That’s a good idea. I’m sure it’ll be much easier for you to find a job after you finish college.
M: I think so, too. But I’m faced with a big problem.
    W: What is it?
M: I cannot cover all the expenses.
    Text 9
W: Watch out for those people! You are driving really crazy today. Is everything OK?
M: Sorry, I’m just thinking about the speech I have to give tomorrow. I worked really hard on it, but I get scared of speaking in front of people. I’m worried I’ll mess it up.
W: You can practice it again tonight before bed. You’ll do fine.
M: Last time I gave a speech, I thought I was prepared, but I ended up forgetting half of what I wanted to say. Tomorrow night, I’ll feel so thankful that it’s over.
W: Just take some deep breaths. Everyone in the class has to do it, right? So, everyone else is feeling nervous, too. You’re not the only one.
M: I know, but it definitely feels like I’m the only one.
W: Why don’t you pull in to that ice cream shop right there? Let’s get something good to eat to take your mind off it.
