I grew up with a four-year gap between myself and my younger brother. It was a distance in age to keep us close as we got older, but also an age gap to make sure we lived our own lives in completely different ways. Having a younger brother while I was a girl was a lot of work, for there was a lot of fighting.
However, as we've got older, we've become closer, and I've learned several things in life from my younger brother that I didn't realize I needed before.
My younger brother is one of the most talented and creative souls I've known. He's continually feeding his creativity with new art forms and new instruments. He always seeks to understand and learn more about the world around him. He's helped remind me through his actions and words that giving up on creativity is something a person should never do.
My younger brother has also been through hard times, but he's able to focus on learning from the hard times, unlike me, who tends to hold on to every little thing from my life. It's always been difficult for me to let things go and move on, but my younger brother has been an inspiration for me to try harder at letting go.
My younger brother has always been a more introverted type, and if you speak to him, you're lucky to get over three words out of him at a time. Because of this, he's certainly learned the whole "actions speak louder than words" thing. But, I've realized from my brother that I needn't speak to fill the silence. Sometimes, it's necessary to spend some of your time in silence and reflect in it.

C. Moving on with the past kept in mind. | D. Focusing on little details of everything. |
- What might the introverted people be like according to paragraph 5?
A. They are quiet. | B. They are talented. |
C. They are positive. | D. They are friendly. |
- What is the best title for the text?
A. The Relationship between My Brother and Me B. The Great Spirits of My Younger Brother |
C. Advice Provided by My Younger Brother D. Lessons Learned from My Younger Brother |
D
During the COVID-19 pandemic, many people under lockdown feel lonely and bored. “There is a loneliness epidemic,” said John Dattilo from Pennsylvania State University, US.
So he, together with an international team of researchers, studied how to reduce loneliness and increase positive feelings during the pandemic.
According to their new study, reducing loneliness has something to do with doing enjoyable activities that require both concentration (注意力) and skill.
When people are absorbed in what they are doing, they enter a state called “flow”, Dattilo explained. “Flow can be achieved by doing activities that we value and that requires us to concentrate fully to use our skills.”
To achieve a state of flow, there must be a balance between the challenge of the task and your skill level. For example, if you’re trying to create a complex (复杂的) computer program but your skill level is low, then you’re likely to feel stressed instead of achieving “flow”. On the contrary (相反地), if the task is too easy, then boredom will set in and “flow” will not appear, either.
If you have artistic skills, for example, playing the piano or painting can lead to flow. So can things like skiing, writing and storytelling, depending on who you are.
“When we enter a state of flow, we become focused, and we experience momentary enjoyment,” Dattilo said. “When we leave a state of flow, we are often surprised by how much time has passed.” However, watching television usually doesn’t help people enter flow, according to Dattilo, because there aren’t any challenges.
“People tend to thrive (茁壮成长) on healthy activities and challenge,” said Dattilo. “We hope this research will help people live fuller, happier, healthier lives.”
32.What did Dattilo study?
A.Why people feel lonely. | B.How to reduce loneliness. |
C.What enjoyable activities are. | D.Why people like a new challenge. |
33.How do people feel when they enter the “flow” state?
A.They are lonely and bored. | B.They feel stressed and tired. |
C.They are concentrating and happy. | D.They feel time passes slowly. |
34.What does the underlined phrase “are absorbed in” probably mean?
A.are good at | B.are proud of |
C.are focused on | D.are relaxed about |
35.What can we do to reduce loneliness during lockdown, according to Dattilo?
A.Follow a healthy lifestyle. | B.Learn as many skills as possible. |
C.Complete impossible tasks. | D.Do something enjoyable and challenging. |

Several years ago, I was living in New York and working for an airline, so I never got back home for Christmas. My Christmas was happy too with some other colleagues(同事) around. But in my heart I was sad because I couldn't stay with my family. Sometimes my colleagues would say our Christmas was filled with tears. But this Christmas was different. I was lucky. I had the whole day off, which meant I could stay with my family on Christmas Eve.
When Christmas morning came, I awoke to a small hand rubbing my face. “Dad, Merry Christmas!”was all my younger son had time to say. He seemed to be racing against time. I knew he was hunting for gifts with his brother eagerly. I got downstairs just to see the two little boys' faces as they looked at the pocket rockets Santa Claus(圣诞老人) had left them. I realized that the real Christmas was for the children who had deep belief in the amazing power of Santa Claus. At first, their fingers went almost shyly over their toys. When their inspection (检查) had been completed, the two boys ensured that the gifts were really delivered by Santa Claus and they dragged everything into the center of the living room.
