Last summer, Katie Steller stopped at a traffic light, where a man was sitting with a sign asking for help. She rolled down her car window. "Hey" She shouted. I'm diving around giving free haircuts. If I go grab my chair, do you want one right now? " "No problem." he said. “ I'll be right back." Steller said. She drove off, went to the salon she owns, and loaded a red chair into her car. Then she drove back. The man, named Edward, took a seat, and she cut his curly graying hair. After Steller was done, Edward looked in a mirror.“I look good!" he said.
To date, Steller has given 30 or so such haircuts to people around the city. These clients are all living on the margins, and she is fully aware of the power of her cleanup job. "It's more than a haircut." she says.“I want it to be a gateway, to show value and respect, but also to get to know people. I want to build relationships."
Steller knows that a haircut can change a life. One changed hers: as a teen, she suffered from a disease called ulcerative colitis (溃疡性结肠炎) that was so severe and her hair thinned suddenly. Seeing this, her mother arranged for Steller's first professional haircut. “To sit down and have somebody talk to me like a person, it helped me feel cared about." she says. After that, Steller knew she wanted to have her own salon so she could help people feel the way she'd felt that day. Not long after finishing cosmetology school in 2009, she began what she now calls her Red Chair Project.
Steller listens to people's stories of loss, addiction, and struggle to get back on their feet. The attention apparently works. When she was cutting a woman's hair one day, someone drove by and yelled, "You look amazing!"
The woman in the chair smiled very happily.“I'm not unnoticed." she exclaimed. "Look, people see me!" "The way you show up in the world matters." says Steller. You have no idea what people are going to do with the kindness that you give them.
4. Steller gives haircuts to those who
A. live on a farm B. live in the countryside
C. live on the margins of society D. live in small communities
5. What inspired Steller to start her Red Chair Project?
A. Her generosity to the poor. B. Her skill of doing hair.
C. Her fear of being alone. D. Her experience in illness.
6. How did the woman in the chair feel on hearing someone's comments?
A. Confident. B. Cheerful. C. Shocked. D. Shy.
7. Which is the best title for the text?
A. The Power of Free Cuts. B. A Successful Salon Owner.
C. A Wonderful Free Salon. D. The Change of Life.

Tokyo University laboratory has developed a robot that never loses at the game of Rock Paper Scissors. That is because its visual processing abilities and fingers work together faster than any human brain. A video of the robot has been watched by more than 3 million viewers on YouTube since going online at the end of June.
Tokyo University engineering professor Masatoshi Ishikawa has a good-natured response to frustrated human losers who accuse him of essentially creating a robot that cheats.“It is not cheating. Every one millisecond (千分之一秒) the image processor decides and recognizes the shape the human hand is going to make. And then the robot can make a winnable shape one millisecond later than a human being. Only one millisecond, but a human cannot see this difference because the human eye is very slow." explained Ishikawa.
At the Ishikawa Oku Laboratory there has been amazing progress which shows the near perfect accuracy of robotics, such as a robot that can catch a falling egg without breaking it, another one that can tie a knot, and a robot that may not be quite ready for the NBA, but is able to dribble (运球) a ball.
In sports such as baseball and cricket, the misses outnumber (比.....多) successes for even the most skilled athletes. That is not so in this award-wining school laboratory. For instance, an intelligent robot is the result of five years of research and a lot of trial and error. And the cost of
just one finger on the robot is equal to that of a mini car.
The technology obviously has uses beyond fun and games. Corporations are eager to take advantage of the lab's technology for industrial and other practical uses. And there is talk of applying it to assisting disabled people and improving human capabilities.
8. What brings the robot so much attention on the YouTube?
A. It plays online games much better than any human.
B. Its eyes and fingers can work at the same time.
C. It can do whatever people tell it to do.
D. It always wins at the game of Rock Paper Scissors.
9. Ishikawa's explanation suggests that the robot _____________.
A. proves to be dishonest B. responds faster than humans
C. works slower sometimes D. is lucky to win the game
10. The author proves that a robot is skillful and accurate through ____________.
A. performing an experiment B. telling an interesting story
C. offering some practical examples D. ordering it to do something hard
11. Which section of a website is the text probably taken from?
A. Science and technology. B. Human and society.
C. Sports and games D. Relaxation and entertainment.

London (CNN) There is no God---that's the conclusion of the well-known physicist Stephen
Hawking, whose final book is published on Tuesday. The book Brief Answers to the Big Questions, which was completed by his family after his death, presents answers to the questions that Hawking said he received most during his time on Earth.
Other bombshells (爆炸性事件) the British scientist left his readers with include the belief that alien life is out there, artificial intelligence could outsmart humans and time travel can't be impossible.
"There is no God. No one directs the universe," he writes in the book. “For centuries, it was believed that disabled people like me were living under a curse by God," he adds. “I prefer to think that everything can be explained another way, by the laws of nature."
While Hawking spoke of his lack of belief in God during his life, several of his other answers
are more surprising.“There are forms of intelligent life out there," he writes.“We need to be cautious about answering back until we have developed a bit further.”
“Travel back in time can't be ruled out according to our present understanding,”he says. He
also predicts that "within the next hundred years we will be able to travel to anywhere in the Solar
System."
In remarks prepared by Hawking and played at the launch of the book in London on Monday,
the scientist also turned his attention to the world he was leaving behind. His greatest concern, his
daughter said, “is how divided we've become,”adding, "He makes this comment about how we seem to have lost the ability to look outward, and we are increasingly looking inward to ourselves."
Hawking's final message to readers, though, is a hopeful one. Attempting to answer the question “How do we shape the future?", the scientist writes,“Remember to look up at the stars and not down at your feet.”
12. Which question is NOT probably included in the book Brief Answers to the Big Questions?
A. Is there alien life? B. Does anyone direct the universe?
C. Is time travel possible? D. Does the solar system exist?
13. Hawking mentioned his disability in his book to __________.
A. show his confidence B. support his disbelief in God
C. tell readers about his hardship D. complain of God
14. What was Hawking most concerned about ?
A. Artificial intelligence will outcome humans.
B. Human beings are not united.
C. Technology will destroy the world.
D. Alien life will come to the earth some day.
15. What did Hawking suggest human beings do?
A. Contact alien life. B. Respect artificial intelligence.
C. Develop the earth. D. Explore the universe.

第七部分 应用文写作
Dear Alice,
I can feel from your email that this issue with your parents is greatly affecting you and really appreciate that you trust me enough to want my advice.
Coincidentally, I met a similar situation last summer. Initially, like you, I really didn’t want to go travelling with my parents. But then I thought of things from their point of view. I go to university next year, so, for them, this may have been the last time we’d all travel together as a family. I understood that rather than trying to control me, they just wanted to spend more time with me, so I chose to go and we had a fantastic time together!
I think you shouldn’t be in such a hurry to grow up. Treasure the time you have with your parents now as neither you nor they will be around forever.
I hope my own experience helps you and that you find a solution.
Yours,
Li Hua
