A second-grade education has not stopped the garbage collection Jose Gutierrez from
bringing the gift of reading to thousands of Colombian children.
Gutierrez started collecting books almost 20 years ago. He was driving a garbage truck at night through the country's wealthier neighborhoods. The thrown-away reading material slowly
piled up. Now the ground floor of his small house is a makeshift(临时的) community library. It is stacked with about 20,000 books, including chemistry textbooks,
children's classics and so on.
He says books are luxuries(奢侈) for boys and girls in low-income neighborhoods such as his. New reading material at bookstores is expensive. There are only 19 public libraries in Bogota. It is a city of 8.5 million people. “
Libraries should be in all neighborhoods and on each comer of every neighborhood. But the
libraries tend to be located far away from poorer areas,” says Gutierrez.“Books are our salvation(救星).”
The 53-year-old Gutierrez's love for reading comes from his mother. She always read to her
son even though she was too poor to keep him in school.“ She used to read stories every night.
She always provided encouragement or new ideas for what I should do," said Gutierrez.
Gutierrez has traveled to book markets in Mexico and Chile to share his experience of
starting a library. He has sent many books to other libraries around the country. That is because he does not have room for them. He says he agrees that technology allows books to be read digitally. But he prefers to read in a traditional way. “There is nothing more beautiful than smelling the ink and turning the pages,”he says.
24. How did Jose Gutierrez collect books?
A. By asking for donations. B. By searching through the trash.
C. By borrowing from libraries. D. By buying a bookstore.
25. What does Jose Gutierrez want to express in Paragraph 3?
A. People in Colombia don't like reading books.
B. Reading material-in libraries should be cheaper.
C. Libraries in Colombia are not equally spread.
D. Rich people should help poor people in Colombia.
26. Which of the following words can best describe Gutierrez's mother?
A. Knowledgeable. B. Brave. C. Inspirational. D. Generous.
27. What is Gutierrez's attitude towards the paper books?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Objective. D. Unclear.
C
If you sit at a beach and stare at the stars, you can see the sky suddenly light up and then the water turn a beautiful, electric blue. What you are seeing is a natural phenomenon known as
bioluminescence(生物发光). Bioluminescence is a process by which sea creatures give out light from their bodies. Trying to catch sight of this phenomenon has in fact become a tourist attraction in places like New
Zealand.
Bioluminescence is shown by many organisms, such as specific kinds of fish, squid, jellyfish, as well as fireflies. The light is caused by a chemical reaction involving a molecule(分子) called luciferin that reacts with oxygen to produce light from within an animal's body.
Animals can choose the amount and the color of the light depending on whether they are running
away from predators(捕食者), attracting a possible mate, or hunting. The colors are typically a bright blue or green--- this is because colors that have shorter wavelengths such as blue and green travel easily through the
water.
In the waters off the coast of New Zealand, plankton(浮游生物) produces neon-blue when it senses the presence of smaller fish that eat it. Its light causes the waves to shine, the water to flash, and the fish to swim away as they swim through the ocean.
It is important to research before visiting as bioluminescence is not guaranteed. The animals have a built-in sense of time that allows them to only shine in darkness. Also, wet weather increases the chance of bioluminescence taking place, as the water from the cloud provides nutrients that help stimulate the algae(藻类植物).
On the other hand, too much wind can cause the organisms to sink and swim away in
different directions. During the day, red tides and little pockets of algae are indicators that there might be a bioluminescent show later.
Bioluminescent waves are truly one of the most unique and beautiful sights to see. They remind us of the many foreign creatures that live on our planet and our responsibility to protect them for future generations.
28. How will people feel when seeing bioluminescence in New Zealand?
A. Frightened. B. Encouraged C. Confused. D. Excited.
29. What do we know about bioluminescence?
A. Plankton produces neon-blue when it searches for food.
B. The colors with longer wavelengths move faster in the ocean.
C. Luciferin can produce oxygen to start chemical reactions.
D. Animals produce different colors of light in different situations.
30. When can visitors have a better chance of seeing bioluminescence?
A. On a rainy night. B. On a rainy morning.
C. On a windy night. D. On a windy morning.
31 What is the purpose of the text?
A. To explain a natural phenomenon. B. To introduce creatures in New Zealand.
C. To call on us to protect sea creatures. D. To warn people of the environmental pollution.
D
A study, which was published in the magazine Cognitive Research: Principles and
Implications, found that women may consider men wearing face masks as more attractive. The
researchers find that not only do coverings change people's attractiveness but the type of covering plays a role as well.
Dr. Michael Lewis, a professor at Cardiff University’s School of Psychology, said,“Research carried out before the pandemic found that medical face masks reduce attractiveness — so we
wanted to test whether this had changed since face coverings became omnipresent during the spread of COVID-19 and understand whether the type of mask had any effect.”
“Our study suggests that faces are considered most attractive when covered with medical face masks. This may be because we're used to healthcare workers wearing blue masks and now
we associate these with people in caring or medical professions,”Lewis explained.“At a time when we feel insecure, we may find the wearing of medical masks reassuring(使人安心的) and so feel more positive towards the wearer.”
The study also suggested that people's faces were thought of as dramatically more attractive when covered with masks compared with being uncovered.“ Some of this effect may be a result of being able to hide undesirable features in the lower part of the face --- but this effect was present
for both less attractive and more attractive people,” Lewis said. The team conducted the study by
asking 43 women to rank the attractiveness of images of men's faces without a mask, wearing a
cloth mask, wearing a blue medical mask, and holding a black book covering the area a face mask would hide.
The participants said those wearing a cloth mask were more attractive than the ones
with no masks or whose faces were partly covered by the book. But the surgical mask--- which
was just a normal kind----made the wearer look even better.
“The results are opposite of the pre-pandemic research where it was thought masks made people think about disease and the persons should be avoid," said Lewis. “ The pandemic has changed our mind in how we treat the wearers of masks. When we see someone wearing a mask we no
longer think‘that person has a disease,I need to stay away'.
32. Which of the following can replace the underlined word“omnipresent” in Paragraph 2?
A. Illegal. B. Strange. C. Common. D. Outdated.
33. Why do blue masks make men most attractive according to Lewis?
A. Blue masks make men look powerful.
B. Blue masks are related to medical professions.
C. Blue masks help women focus on men's faces directly.
D. Blue masks can hide undesirable features on men's faces.
34. Which of the following image is probably ranked the least attractive according to the new
study?
A. The one with a cloth mask. B. The one with a blue mask.
C. The one with no masks. D. The one totally covered by the book.
85. Which can be the best title for the text?
A. Face masks make people more attractive
B. Less attractive men are more affected by masks
C. Face masks may reduce women's attractiveness
D. Masks change the features of our faces effectively
