Research has shown that people tend to get more happiness from spending their money on experiences, such as travel and entertainment (娱乐), than on things like clothes and electronic products. But are people happier during the purchased (购买的) experience itself? Or does the happiness come
more from expecting or remembering the experience?
A new study, published in the Journal of Experimental Social Psychology, offers an answer. Our experimental purchases not only bring us greater pleasure in terms of expectation and remembrance than do our material (物质的) purchases, but they also bring us greater in-the-moment enjoyment, the study found.
For the study, the researchers recruited (招募) 2,635 adults who agreed to receive texts at any time
during the day. The texts began with a happiness question, which asked the participants (参与者) to tell how they felt 搑ight now?, ranging from very bad to very good. Half of them were then asked if they had made a material purchase within the past hour, such as clothing or electronic goods. The others were asked if they had made an experimental purchase within the past hour, such as eating in a restaurant or attending a concert.
The researchers found that the purchasers of the experiences express higher levels of happiness than
the purchasers of the material goods, no matter how much the purchases cost.
To deal with possible differences in types of purchasers, the researchers carried out a second study in which they researched more than 5,000 adults. 揥e still found the same result,? said Amit Kumar, the study抯 lead author (发起人).
揑f you want to be happier, it might be wise to shift some of your spending away from material
goods and a bit more towards experiences,? Kumar said. 揟hat would probably lead to greater happiness.
32. Why does the writer put forward two questions in paragraph 1?
A. To make a fact clear.
B. To introduce a new study.
C. To compare different researches.
D. To doubt the view of researchers.
33. What did the researchers text the participants for?
A. To ask them about their spending plans.
B. To understand their needs and spending habits.
C. To know the change in their purchasing choices.
D. To find out their purchasing behavior and feelings.
34. Which has the similar meaning to the underlined word 搒hift? in the last paragraph?
A. satisfy. B. apply. C. change. D. increase.
35. What does the new study find about people抯 purchases?
A. People prefer to purchase material goods instead of experiences.
B. People get more pleasure from spending money than making money.
C. The level of happiness from purchases depends on how much they cost.
D. Experimental purchases bring people greater happiness than material ones.

BE A GOOD TOURIST
湖北省孝感市重点高中教科研协作体*英语试卷(共8页) 第5页
Tourism can be both good and bad. Yes, it brings in money for the local economy and creates lots of
jobs for locals. 36
One growing problem is tourists who want to prove that they have visited a destination. They have used paint, rocks, or even keys to write on the Luxor Temple in Egypt, the Colosseum in Rome,
Stonehenge in the UK, and many, many other places. 37 I have three words for people like this:
please stop it. If you want to leave a mark on the world, do it by changing someone抯 life with kindness and love.
38 Some tourists wander around and take pictures of local people without asking for their
permission (准许). For example, Chiang Mai University in Thailand and Yonsei University in South Korea have great numbers of tourists visiting their campuses and walking through their libraries and other public areas, taking pictures of students, and disturbing (打扰) their studies. Another example is Sanlitun,
a famous neighborhood in Beijing, China. 39 I have three words for tourists like this: please be
considerate. Have fun in a way that does not disturb others.
The number of problems from tourists is endless: Walking in large groups without considering others
who need to walk by, crossing roads without thinking of local traffic laws, and many more. The only way
to solve those problems is to make sure that you are not one of those terrible tourists! 40
Remember, whenever you step out of your country, you are representing (代表) your country to the rest of the world.
A. Pass kindness along to future generations.
B. However, it may also bring some problems.
C. Thousands of tourist sites are being destroyed.
D. Be the best, kindest, most polite tourist possible.
E. People are attracted to the amazing food there and enjoy shopping at the local markets.
F. Some tourists love to party there late into the night, making it difficult for locals to sleep.
G. Another big headache in some places has been tourists disturbing the local people and life.

GOING POSITIVE
I always wanted to look like the slim girls on TV even though I knew that it was 56
(possible). I worried about my weight and tried every new diet I read about online. I tried no-fat, low-fat,
only bananas, no bananas ? I almost 57 (go) bananas, too.

Finally, I stopped 64 (compare) myself with actresses and models and looking for things that

揥hat抯 this ? Ben is trying out for (参加试演) Mr. Zuckerman? What if he ruins the whole party?
He抯 never acted before.”
My ears burned at hearing my name. It was Lindsey, the most popular student in our school, talking
to her friends. She would be playing Charlotte. Obviously, she had no idea that my locker was next to Mrs. Stevens抯 room where the tryout schedule was posted.
Lindsey was right. I抎 never been in a play. At lunch, with a heavy heart, I told my best friend Trevor
that I抎 changed my mind. I抎 just be backstage (在后台). Trevor shook his head, but he didn抰 try to shake my determination.
Rehearsal (排练) started, and I spent Tuesday and Thursday afternoons at school. It was fun to watch
the actors from backstage. By the third week I抎 learned everyone抯 lines (台词).
And then, only two days before the performance, Josh, the student who was supposed to play Mr. Zuckerman, fell off his bike and broke his leg.
Mrs. Stevens called us together. 揥e can抰 get someone ready in two days. We抣l have to put off the
play,? she said sadly.
For once everyone was silent. Then I heard Trevor抯 voice. 揃en can do it. He knows all the lines.? Suddenly, everyone looked at me.
Mrs. Stevens asked, 揑s that right?”
I nodded.
Lindsey spoke up, 揂re you sure?”
I looked at her and spoke out Mr. Zuckerman抯 longest line.
When I finished, everyone clapped (鼓掌). Mrs. Stevens said, 揂ll right, Ben, you抳e saved the show. That抯 all for today. Ben, Lindsey ? can you stay?”
Mrs. Stevens started and directed us on the first act, and then the second. Sometimes I spoke my lines
too quickly; sometimes my movements were too awkward. It seemed as if my performance was far from satisfactory.
The next day, Mrs. Stevens helped me during lunch. She taught me how to take control of my voice
and take deep breaths so that I抎 stay relaxed onstage. I could tell she was worried.
注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
2. 请按如下格式在答题卡的相应位置作答。
With so many students watching me at rehearsal, I forgot everything Mrs. Stevens had said.It was opening night, and I stood backstage, shaking with fear.
