When I was 12 years old, I already knew that my teen years were going to be the worst years of my life. I was a total outsider, bullied(欺凌)at school. I felt completely alone in my small town. But by starting to do volunteer work when I was 14, I turned my problem into helping others. The opportunity to practice kindness made me feel like my life had a greater purpose. The more positive energy I shared, the more kindness and appreciation I received. I realized that my purpose in life would be to reach out to people, specifically teenagers, and help them feel less alone.
Books were my true friends back then. I was so thankful that the authors wrote those books. The kindness they offered me with their books saved my life. One of my biggest dreams was to become an author so I could write books that would help other teenagers the way those books helped me.
After surviving terrible experiences at school and at home, I made a choice to take the optimistic and positive road in the next steps of my journey. My dream carcer, which I thought was only possible for the authors I loved, is what I am doing now. I have been a full-time author of teen novels since 2007 and am grateful for this amazing opportunity to reach out to readers every single day.
Kindness saved me when I needed help the most. Even small acts of kindness can change someone’s life. You never know what someone else is going through. But by practicing daily kindness, you become an architect of positive change.
    25. What was the author’s life like when he was 12?
    A. Boring. B. Unhappy.
    C. Peaceful. D. Meaningful.
    26. Why did the author choose writing as his job?
    A. He was inspired by his volunteer work experience.
    B. He found he had a talent for writing.
    C. He could pass positive energy to readers.
    D. He wanted to share his school experiences.
    27. What does the author suggest readers do in the last paragraph?
    A. Say “no”to bullies bravely.
    B. Make positive changes in their lives.
    C. Learn to care about others’ feelings.

    (B)
The first time my father and I ever went fishing became a family joke. We spent hours waiting for the fish. The sun was like fire. We were hot, sticky, and mad that the fish refused to try our night crawlers (蚯蚓).
Being only seven years old, I observed that perhaps the worms were the problem. Maybe the night crawlers only moved at night, and now they were just lying still there. Dad ignored my guessing.
We began to pack up to leave. As we headed back to our truck, we heard tires roaring in the distance. Getting into our truck was tough. Having sat in the boiling sun for six hours, I found the seats were burning.
I shifted from side to side in the seat so as not to cook my bottom. While driving out we saw a truck stuck in the mud. That explained the sound of roaring tires we’d heard.
Being a nice guy, my dad helped pull the man from the mud. In return, this fellow gave Dad some fish for being a Good Samaritan. As Dad climbed back into our truck with a brown bag full of fish, we waved goodbye to our newfound friend.
On the drive home, we agreed to take in the fish as if we had caught them. We were sure there was no way for Mom to know the difference. It was just a little white lie.
We arrived home hot and sweaty, and went to shower while Mom prepared the fish.
After showering, Dad and I met in the hall and sat down to enjoy freshly fried fish. We started eating happily and went on talking about how delicious the fish tasted.
As we got up to do the dishes, Mom cleared her throat. “I just have one question for you two great fishermen,” she said. We looked at her expectantly, thinking we had another opportunity to delight her with our great fishing ability. With a big smile, Mom asked, “How was it that you two managed to not only clean your fish, but also freeze them before you got home?”
    28. Why didn’t the fish eat the night crawlers?
    A. The weather was too hot.
    B. The fish were not hungry.
    C. The reason was not clear.
    D. The night crawlers didn’t move.
    29. Dad was called a Good Samaritan for ________.
    A. helping a stranger
    B. taking in the fish
    C. showing great strength
    D. making friends with a stranger
    30. Mom smiled in the end because________
    A. she was pleased by the clean fish
    B. she was amused by the little white lie
    C. she did not need to deal with the mess
    D. she was satisfied with their fishing ability

根据文章第五段“Being a nice guy, my dad helped pull the man from the mud.”(作为一个好人,我爸爸帮助把那个人从泥泞中拉了出来)可知,爸爸因为帮助一个陌生人而被称为好心人。故选A项。
根据最后一段“With a big smile, Mom asked, “How was it that you two managed to not only clean your fish, but also freeze them before you got home?””(妈妈笑着问道:“你们两个怎么在回家前不仅把鱼清洗干净,还把鱼冷冻起来了?”)
    (C)
My greatest regret in life is that I failed to tell my teachers how much they helped me with my early education.
Ruth Hammerman taught English to the eighth-graders. She was the first to show me the rules of “rich and delicate language.” She was a no-nonsense teacher. Unlike common teachers, she broke sentences into parts so we could know the grammar rules. She never seemed to be tired of the simple pleasures of sharing her learning.
Under her influence, I had the strong belief that language needs to be well-spoken and correctly written. Yet over the years I never made the effort to find her and to express my thankfulness for what she did for me. Two years after being in her class, I began the study of Latin and French, and the basic knowledge she provided in English grammar served me well. Sadly, I never looked back.
In high school I took high-level French in a class taught by Richard Miller, the finest teacher I have ever experienced. Mr. Miller brought to his subject a surprisingly deep understanding and new analysis. Reading Phèdre, Racine’s classic play, he asked us to note there were 1,654 lines in it, and then pointed out the care and effort that Racine paid to structure. Years later I made the same point-giving Mr. Miller credit-in a college French class, and my professor was surprised by my understanding of the play. It happened all because Mr. Miller taught us to enjoy literature with particular points of view. Yet I never made the effort in later years to tell him what he meant to me.
Mr.Miller is certainly long dead. Miss Hammerman would likely be in her 90s if she is alive. In preparing this article, I tried to find her but was unsuccessful.
I am certain my act is common. People often forget to express love and thankfulness to their teachers. I ought to have told Miss Hammerman and Mr.Miller how much they did for me. I suppose they knew their work was meaningful because they believed in what they were doing. Now I appreciate how special they were.
    31. What is special about Mr. Miller’s French class?
    A. He asked students to count lines.
    B. He analyzed literature in a new way.
    C. He showed great love to his students.
    D. He taught basic knowledge well.
    32. What does the underlined phrase “my act” in the last paragraph refer to?
    A. Preparing the article.
    B. Learning from teachers.
    C. Looking for the teachers.
    D. Failing to thank teachers.
    33. What best describes the two teachers according to the text?
    A. Strict.
    B. Encouraging.
    C. Humorous.
    D. Creative.
    34. What is the author’s purpose of writing the text?
    A. To show love for French literature.
    B. To share memories of the two teachers.
    C. To explain why teachers are important.
    D. To talk about the meaning of education.
B 32. D 33. D 34. B
Miller brought to his subject a surprisingly deep understanding and new analysis.(Miller先生给他的主题带来了令人惊讶的深刻理解和新的分析)”可知,Miller先生的法语课的特别之处是他以一种新的方式分析文学,故选B。
根据最后一段中“People often forget to express love and thankfulness to their teachers.(人们经常忘记向老师表达爱意和感激之情)”及上文提及作者没有向两位老师表达感谢可推知,“I am certain my act is common.(我确信我的行为很普遍)”中的“my act”指“没有去感谢老师”。
根据第二段“Unlike common teachers, she broke sentences into parts so we could know the grammar rules.(与普通老师不同,她把句子分成几个部分,这样我们就能知道语法规则)”以及根据第四段中“Mr. Miller brought to his subject a surprisingly deep understanding and new analysis.(Miller先生给他的主题带来了令人惊讶的深刻理解和新的分析)”可知,作者的两位老师的教学都有创新性。
根据第一段“My greatest regret in life is that I failed to tell my teachers how much they helped me with my early education.(我一生中最大的遗憾就是没有告诉我的老师,他们在我的早期教育中对我帮助有多大)”以及最后一段“I ought to have told Miss Hammerman and Mr. Miller how much they did for me. I suppose they knew their work was meaningful because they believed in what they were doing. Now I appreciate how special they were.(我本该告诉Hammerman小姐和Miller先生他们为我做了多少事。我想他们知道自己的工作是有意义的,因为他们相信自己在做的事情。现在我明白他们是多么特别了)”可知,本文主要是作者对两位老师的回忆。故选B。
    第二节 阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。请在答题卡指定区域作答。(共5小题,共15分)
    阅读下面短文,根据题目要求用英文回答问题。
    Chain of ________
My father and I have been separated for over two years. He was terribly harsh with me throughout my childhood, and I felt that I couldn’t forgive him. And yet, now he is dying, struggling to breathe through an oxygen tube. All I can think of is how much he loved me.
How he would kiss me on the forehead before school. How he bought me roller skates, although we were struggling by on his salary. How he would play chess and tennis with me, and take me to endless chess and tennis matches even though I never won anything. How he would fill in the quick crossword, leave a few clues and praise me if I solved them. He kept every article I ever had published, even during our many estranged periods. He gave me a lot of his savings to buy a flat after I became a single mum when my daughter was one year old. And he set my date of birth as the passcode on his phone.
Yet I’m ashamed to say I hated him for everything: my cutting, my anxiety, my depression.... He was there during the tough times, yet all I could think was that the tough times happened because of him, forgetting that the causes of events are complex, and that plenty of people who had happy childhoods have to deal with strict and pushy parents, too. I even stopped him from seeing my daughter, then three, the person that brought him most happiness, because I was scared he would hurt her, and that her life would be like mine. That decision would mean he never spoke to me again.
Born in 1930s, he was a man of few words, a silent romantic who signed his empty Valentine’s cards to my mother with only his first initials Knowing he was old, I tried to get back in touch several times to make things right, but my mother said he didn’t want to hear from me. I understand that.
It’s much too late now. When I sit by his hospital bed and hold his large wrinkled hand, I ask him to squeeze it if he can hear me, he doesn’t. So I tell him a few of the things I should have told him, though it’s hard to say the words that I love him very much, and that I’m sorry about the estrangement. And it reminds me of what I’ve known for a long time: my dad didn’t know how to be a father to me when I was young, because his father was harsh to him as a child.
I never thought that I’d feel this broken at losing him. I wish that his eyes will open, even for just a few days. I will give him a letter thanking him for all the things he has helped me and apologizing for all the ways I have wronged him. And when I give the letter to him, I will bring my five-year-old daughter with me, so he can see her happiness and sweetness and learn that the chain of hurt has finally been broken.
    35. [Meaning in Context] What does the underlined word “estranged” in Paragraph 2 mean in this text? (With no more than 20 words)
    __________________________________________________________
    36. [Pronoun] What does the underlined word “that” refer to in Paragraph 4?
    __________________________________________________________
    37. [Chronology] Number the following events in the right time order according to the article.
①My father gave me his savings to buy an apartment when I divorced.
②My father played chess with and tennis with me and took me to endless chess and tennis matches even though I never won anything.
③I stopped my father from seeing my daughter.
④My father was hurt by his father when he was a child.
⑤I felt heart-broken to lose him.
    __________________________________________________________
    38. [Emotion] What were the narrator’s feelings towards her father when her dad was alive and when her dad was dying? Find textual evidence to support your opinion.
    __________________________________________________________
    39. [Title] One word is missing in the title. Which one do you prefer for the title, Chain of Hurt or Chain of Love? Please give your reason.
    __________________________________________________________
35. Separated periods from her father for over two years
    36. The truth that he didn’t want to hear from me
    37. ④②①③⑤ 38. She hated her Dad when her Dad was alive and felt sorry when he was dying.
39 Chain of Love.Because the passage presents how much love her father gave her throughout his life.
根据第一段中“My father and I have been separated for over two years.”(我父亲和我已经分开两年多了。)及划线词所在句“He kept every article I ever had published, even during our many estranged periods.”(他保留了我发表过的所有文章,即使是在我们许多 estranged的时期)可知,划线词此处指的就是我和父亲疏远的那段时期,指文中的“separated ”,故答案为:Separated periods from her father for over two years。
根据划线词前一句“Knowing he was old, I tried to get back in touch several times to make things right, but my mother said he didn’t want to hear from me.”(知道他年纪大了,我好几次想和他联系,想把事情解决好,但是我妈妈说他不想听到我的消息)可知,当我想和父亲重归于好,想和他解决我们之间的矛盾的时候,妈妈说父亲不想听到我的消息。 The truth that he didn’t want to hear from me。
根据倒数第二段最后一句“And it reminds me of what I’ve known for a long time: my dad didn’t know how to be a father to me when I was young, because his father was harsh to him as a child.”(这让我想起了我很久以前就知道的事情: 在我小的时候,我的父亲不知道如何做一个父亲,因为他的父亲在他小时候对他很严厉)可知,父亲很小的时候,外公对父亲很严厉,所以④为最先发生;结合第二段中“How he would kiss me on the forehead before school. How he bought me roller skates, although we were struggling by on his salary. How he would play chess and tennis with me, and take me to endless chess and tennis matches even though I never won anything.”(他会在上学前亲吻我的额头。 所以细节①为第三个;根据第三段中“I even stopped him from seeing my daughter, then three, the person that brought him most happiness, because I was scared he would hurt her, and that her life would be like mine.”(我甚至阻止他见我的女儿,那时我女儿三岁,给他带来最大幸福的人,因为我害怕他会伤害她,她的生活会像我一样)可知,我不让父亲见我的女儿是在女儿三岁的时候。所以细节③为第四个;根据最后一段中“I never thought that I’d feel this broken at losing him.”(我从没想过失去他会让我如此伤心)可知,我对失去父亲感到心碎。
根据第一段中“He was terribly harsh with me throughout my childhood, and I felt that I couldn’t forgive him.”(在我的整个童年时期,他对我非常严厉,我觉得我不能原谅他)及第三段中“Yet I’m ashamed to say I hated him for everything: my cutting, my anxiety, my depression....”(然而,我很惭愧地说,我恨他的一切:我的割伤,我的焦虑,我的抑郁……) When I sit by his hospital bed and hold his large wrinkled hand, I ask him to squeeze it if he can hear me, he doesn’t. So I tell him a few of the things I should have told him, though it’s hard to say the words that I love him very much, and that I’m sorry about the estrangement.”(现在已经太迟了。 She hated her Dad when her Dad was alive and felt sorry when he was dying.
根据文章第一段“All I can think of is how much he loved me.”(我能想到的就是他有多爱我)第二段“How he would kiss me on the forehead before school. And he set my date of birth as the passcode on his phone.”(他会在上学前亲吻我的额头。 他把我的出生日期设成了他手机的密码)充分证实了父亲对我的爱;最后一段“I never thought that I’d feel this broken at losing him. I wish that his eyes will open, even for just a few days. I will give him a letter thanking him for all the things he has helped me and apologizing for all the ways I have wronged him. And when I give the letter to him, I will bring my five-year-old daughter with me, so he can see her happiness and sweetness and learn that the chain of hurt has finally been broken.”(我从没想过失去他会让我如此伤心。 Chain of Love. Because the passage presents how much love her father gave her throughout his life.

Dear Mama,
Thank you so much for bringing me up. Thank you so much for so many years of the education and toleration of my mistakes. I always make you angry, for which I must say sorry here.
But now I have grown up, I can be self-reliant, and I feel that I have been strong enough to be your dependence. In the past, though I rarely lived up to your expectations, I will work harder to realize my dream. Just believe in me, Mom! I won’t let you down again! Really grateful for your taking good care of me. When I am sick, you are always attending to me in every possible way. When I fail the examination, you are also standing by me to encourage me, to refuel me not to become disheartened.
Really grateful for all that you have done for me. I can’t thank you too much. I love you, Mom!
    Yours,
    Lily
