Last year, I lived in Chile for half a year as an exchange student with the American Field Service.I lived with a Chilean family and had the responsibilities of any Chilean teenager. I had good days and bad days I didn’t understand.
Chuquicamata, my host community, is a mining camp. When I arrived there, I was scared. It was so different from what I was used to.There were lots of dogs on the streets, and there was no downtown, few smoothly paved streets, and little to do for entertainment. Rain was not seen very often, earthquakes and windstorms were frequent.
I had studied Spanish for two and a half years and was always one of the best students in my class. But in my first week in Chile I was only able to communicate and needed one person to whom I could explain my shock. I couldn’t speak the thoughts in my head and there were so many.
Most exchange students experience this like me. Culture shock presents itself in everything from increased aggression(侵略性) towards the people to lack of appetite(食欲). I was required to overcome all difficulties.
As time passed, everything changed. I began to forget the words in English and to dream in Spanish and love Chilean food. I got used to not depending on expensive things for fun. Fun in Chuquicamata was being with people. And I took maths, physics, chemistry, biology, Spanish, art, and philosophy.
But the sacrifices were nothing compared to the gain. I learned how to accept and to succeed in another culture. I now have a deeper understanding of both myself and others.

I attended a Catholic(天主教的) grammar school for nine years. Later I decided to go to the public high school that I now attend. Why did I choose a public high school?
The main purpose of going to school is to receive a good education that will help us become successful in the future. Both private and public schools give this opportunity. But public schools and private schools each give an entirely different social experience. The social experience, in my opinion, is much more important than the academic(学业的) experience, especially for a boy like me.
In my grammar school, most of the people I met were white, Catholic, and of the same learning ability. Every day at school, students were expected to wear uniform(统一的) clothes, have uniform hairstyles and learn at the same pace. Growing up, this is what I expected all schools were like. For nine years I didn’t know that people of different religions(宗教) and learning paces existed in the real world. But the fact is that there are more types of people than Catholics and quick learners. For this reason, I decided to try something new by attending a public high school.
My freshman year of high school was an amazing eye-opener for me. I met different types of people. I have met people with long hair, short hair, black hair and purple hair. I have met people who are two years ahead of everyone else, and others who are two years behind. There are musicians, bookworms and others with interests outside the school. People can be whoever they want to be.
Meeting so many different students and teachers with so many different interests made me much more interested in meeting more people. This experience made me know how important the social part of a public high school really is. In the future, when I go to college and begin my career, I will be meeting and working with people who have different backgrounds. For this reason, I will never regret the decision I have made.
    28. Why did the author decide to go to a public high school?
A.Because he wanted to become better at his studies.
B.Because he didn't want to learn grammar any longer.
C.Because he wanted to gain useful social experience,
D.Because his parents couldn’t afford to send him to the private school.
    29. In the Catholic grammar school, the author__________.
    A. often changed his hairstyle
    B.had a terrible academic experience
C.often refused to wear uniform clothes
D.seldom met many different types of people
    30. What do we learn about students in the author’s grammar school?
    A. Their academic experience isn’t very different.
    B. They can usually do whatever they like.
C.They know all about the real world.
D.None of them studies very hard.
    31. In the author’s opinion, studying at the public high school will help him_______.
    A. apply to a good college
    B.become what he truly is
C.enjoy better social life in the future
    D.have a good academic experience
    D
When I was only 3 years old, my mother taught me to memorize and recite poems. She was my first teacher of the arts, and my father was the first to appreciate my performance. Even at that young age, I had a simple understanding of how art and culture affect us as human beings and how we can connect to each other through the arts, which shapes my life to this day.
When I was growing up, my parents Supported my interest in taking acting classes and doing community theatre. Their faith in me and the professional training I was getting from my theatre teachers gave me a sense of purpose and a sense of self-confidence. I learned what artistic achievement actually was and what hard work the business was. Although many people see the rosy picture of our business, I was really learning what it would require for me to become a professional.
I became an actress, but arts education isn’t just about preparing our young people for a job in the arts. I recently talked to some of the kids attending theatre education. Some of them want to work in a theatre, and some don’t. They are learning not only theatre skills, but also about the world around them. By studying the arts, these students are open to worlds and lives that they might not have any other way of knowing about or any other way to connect with in their lives the way they are right now.
These young people are our future. We are passing the torch to them. And I think that’s one of the most important reasons why we need to foster(培养)the arts.

    32. When the writer was 3 years old, she ___________.
    A. learned many kinds of arts
    B. did well in communication
    C. had a deep understanding of arts
    D.recited poems to her father
33.What does the underlined word “rosy” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
    A.Funny. B.Bright. C.Terrible. D.Hopeless.
    34. According to Paragraph 3,which of the following statements is TRUE?
    A. Discipline and hard work are not included in arts education.
    B. Students studying the arts should travel around the world.
C.Attending theatre education does the kids much good.
D.Arts education can only prepare the youth for jobs in the arts.

    35. What is the text mainly about?
    A. Where to get arts education.
    B.When kids should learn arts.
    C.How to improve arts education.
    D. Why arts education matters.

W:I slipped on the stairs and fell down. I think my arm is broken.
M:Oh,I hope not. Which arm is it?
W:The left one. It hurts right here.
    Text 5
    M:It looks like rain.
W:You may be right. I'll take a raincoat with me.
    Text 6
M:Hello, what seems to be the problem?
W:Well, I'm not feeling very well at the moment. I'm preparing for exams and I've been staying up late last night studying. This morning I got up very early to do some more work, and I fell onto the floor. I came around after a few seconds.
M:Mm. Have you had any other signs?
W:I've been pretty nervous and my eyes hurt sometimes.
M:Well, it sounds as if you've probably been overdoing your study and you're too tired. I don't think there's anything to worry about, but I think you should take it easy for a while and try to get plenty of sleep.
W:Yes, I haven't been getting much sleep lately.
    Text 7
W:It's Alice's birthday next Tuesday. What shall we buy for her birthday?
M:Does she like reading? We can buy her a book.
W:Well, she has lots of books already. Besides, her birthday present last year was also a book.
    M:How about a basketball?
W:No, she doesn't like basketball, but she likes football.
    M:Get her a football, then?
W:Do you know how much a football costs?
M:I have no idea, about 20 dollars, maybe.
W:But I have only 6 dollars. How much do you have?
M:I have 8. Why not go and ask John if he would like to join us?
    Text 8
W:Why don't you get a good job for a change?
    M:But I like my job.
W:You have graduated from university. Digging gardens is not a job for you.
M:But the money is not bad and there is plenty of fresh air.
W:If I were you, I would go on some kind of course, you really must think of the future.
M:To tell you the truth, I'd like to be a doctor.
W:Well, you should think very seriously about that. It means a lot of study, and then work all sorts of hours.
M:Yes, maybe. But I like it.
W:Well then, you should get more information about it as soon as possible.
    Text 9
W:So what are you going to do this summer?
M:I'm going to visit South America.
    W:Great!
M:I'm going to be travelling around quite a lot and I'll probably spend three weeks there.
    W:So where are you going?
M:To start off, I'm going to fly to Rio and perhaps I'll stay there for a few days.
    W:Do you know anyone there?
M:No, but I've always wanted to go to Rio. It's quite a place of interest. And I'll probably go up the Sugar Loaf Mountain.
W:And where are you going after that?
M:I'm going to fly to Santiago in Chile, where I've got some friends. We'll probably spend some time doing some sightseeing and then we're going to lie on the beach for a few days in Valparaiso, which is on the coast, not far away from Santiago. Then I'm flying to Lima where I'm going to meet my girlfriend.
    W:Then you'll have a good time together.
M:Yes. We'll probably go somewhere else. I don't know where yet, but I'd like to spend a week in the jungle. Then we'll probably fly home.
    W:Well, have a nice time!
