Why do you go to the library? For books, yes—but you like books because they tell stories. You hope to get lost in a story or be transported into someone else's life.At one type of library you can do just that—even though there's not a single book.
At a Human Library, instead of books, you can “borrow” people.People with unique life stories volunteer to be the “books.” For a certain amount of time, you can ask them questions and listen to their stories, which are as fascinating as any you can find in a book.(If you attend,be sure to review the habits that make you a good listener.) Many of the stories have to do with some kind of depressing topic. You can speak with a refugee,a soldier suffering from PTSD(创伤后遗症),a homeless person and a woman living with HIV.The Human Library encourages people to take time to truly get to know and learn from someone they might otherwise make a snap judgement about.According to its website, the Human Library is “a place where difficult questions are expected, appreciated and answered.”
The Human Library Organization came to be in Copenhagen,Denmark in 2000.Romni Abergel and his colleagues hosted a fourday event during a major Northern European festival. After the success of this event,Abergel founded the Human Library Organization, hoping to raise awareness among youth about depression, which has been growing ever since.
Though there are a few permanent human libraries, most aren't places at all,but events.Though many do take place at physical libraries, you don't need a library card—anyone can come and be part of the experience. There have been human library events all over the globe,in universities and in pubs, from Chicago to Tunis to Edinburgh to San Antonio.Check out the organization's Facebook page to see when the Human Library might be arriving near you.

A.True. B.Quick.

Under the cold clear water of Lake Huron, researchers have found a fiveandahalffootlong piece of wood that is 8,900 years old.The wood, which is tapered (使成锥形) on one side in a way that looks deliberate, may provide important clues to a mysterious period in North American prehistory.
“This was the stage when humans gradually shifted from hunting large animals to fishing, gathering and agriculture,”said anthropologist John O'Shea.“But because most of the places in this area that prehistoric people lived in are now under water,we don't have good evidence of this important shift itself. We just have clues from before and after the change.”
With support from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA),O'Shea and his colleague Guy Meadows began exploring the area several years ago.In 2009 they reported finding a series of stone features that they believe were “drive lanes” used by ancient Indian hunters.
Since that discovery,O'Shea and Meadows have worked on identifying human campsites, which are typically located away from hunting areas. On their 25foot boat, the researchers first spotted the ancient wood object using a small piece of equipment with a camera. Then a team of divers — including O'Shea — went down about 100 feet to get it.
The wood's age has now been fixed by means of carbon dating. It is currently undergoing more detailed analyses to determine whether there has been human modification, which visual examination suggests.“The first thing you notice is that it appears to have been shaped with a rounded base and a pointed tip,”O'Shea said.“It must have been created. It looks like it might have been used as a tent pole or a pole to hang meat.”
In addition to the wood, the researchers have collected many other samples from the bottom of the lake.O'Shea and his colleagues will need to wait for calmer weather before they can resume their search for evidence of human life under the great lake.

While we know that language first appeared among Homo sapiens (智人) somewhere thousands of years ago,the secret to how language evolved is still unknown, and mainstream theories fall into two distinctly different camps.
One widely held theory is that language came about as an evolutionary adaptation. That was where the idea of natural selection came into play, which was the belief that the specific physical features of a population made that population more likely to survive its environment, like the turtle and its shell. On one hand, humans needed to communicate with each other in order to hunt, farm and defend themselves successfully from the surrounding severe environment.Being able to communicate by using language gave the human species a distinct survival advantage. On the other hand, language was needed for social interaction, according to those who subscribed to the adaptation theory.
In their paper “Natural Language and Natural Selection,” researchers Steven Pinker and Paul Bloom theorized that a series of calls or gestures evolved over time into combinations, giving us complex communication,or language. As things became more complicated around them, humans needed a more complex system to convey information to one another.Early man saw a group of deer he wanted to hunt.He made a sound to his hunting partner that means “deer are nearby.” One day,a storm came in and the hunter noticed that thunder scared the deer away.As a result, the hunter went hungry until the storm passed.Over time, the same hunter also learned to recognize the warning signs for bad weatherdark skies and increased wind.Early man realized that when the sky darkened and the wind picked up,he needed to tell his hunting partner to speed up the pursuit of the deer. Therefore,he came up with a series of sounds that refer to both the deer and the bad weather. That series of sounds was the beginning of an evolutionary adaptation that eventually became language.
As humans learned more about how to best survive, they developed a need to convey these survival methods to their population. To be brief, that's the adaptation theory.

第二节(满分25分)

Bales left the pavement of Base Road and stepped onto snowcovered Jewell Trail. She planned a sixhour hike through New Hampshire's Mount Washington State Park. She had packed for almost every emergency and intended to walk alone.
She'd checked the weather forecast posted by the Mount Washington Observatory before she left.Based on her experience,Bales knew that her hike was realistic.Besides, she had two emergency plans and extra layers of clothing to better adjust her body temperature as conditions changed.
The hike up the lower part of Jewell Trail was pleasant.Bales felt excited as she walked up into snowy paths. The sun shone through the trees and cast a shadow over her smiling face.Less than an hour later, loads of dark clouds had replaced the sunshine, and snow covered the surrounding trees.
She still smiled. However, the weather was showing its teeth.Bales added even more layers to shelter herself from the cold winds and thick fog.She made her way across the snowcovered ridge (山脊)toward Mount Washington and began to think about calling it a day.Suddenly, she noticed something:a single set of footprints in the snow ahead of her, which had been made by a pair of sneakers—typically not the type for hiking.
Meanwhile,Bales was getting colder, even though she was moving fast and generating some body heat. With strong gusts of wind screaming and attacking her back and left side, she decided to abandon her plan. The only thing, however, kept her on the trail was the sneaker tracks in the snow.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按照如下格式作答。
Bales faced a dilemma about whether to follow the tracks or not.
Her searching now turned into rescuing the man.
【参考范文】
Bales faced a dilemma about whether to follow the tracks or not. If she chose to follow the tracks, she'd add time and risk to her hiking. But the tracks ahead suggested someone might be in danger. She couldn't let this go.She called out into the frozen fog,“Is anybody out there?Do you need help?” The strong winds carried her voice away. Then she walked cautiously in the direction of the tracks. She rounded a corner and spotted a man sitting motionlessly.
Her searching now turned into rescuing the man. She approached him instantly and found he was suffering from frostbite on his feet.Without any hesitation, she covered his body with warm clothes, and then poured him some sugary drink. The wind roared over and they would die soon if they didn't get out of there. She supported the man and inched along the trail. With great efforts,Bales managed to save the man's life.Exhausted, she felt that it was all worth it.
