About IVHQ
At International Volunteer HQ, we bring people from all walks of life together to make a difference on the adventure of a lifetime. Established in 2007, we have grown to become the world’s leading volunteer travel company, working in over 50 destinations around the world and placing thousands of volunteers abroad every year.
We’re focused on providing affordable volunteer travel experiences that are responsible, safe and high quality. Our programs heighten global awareness and cultural understanding through the skills and expertise taken by volunteers to their host communities, and through the experiences and lessons that volunteers take back to their own countries and cultures.
How IVHQ Works
IVHQ provides affordable volunteer programs by partnering with organizations based in each of our program countries. We believe this is the best approach to international volunteering.
First, local organizations are in the best position to see where volunteers are genuinely needed. The staff in these organizations are locals, they have been raised in the area and know it inside and out.
Second, partnering with local organizations reduces the costs associated with hosting volunteers, making programs more affordable. This means more people are enabled to volunteer and that enables greater social outcomes to be achieved.
Why Volunteer Abroad with IVHQ
Having supported thousands of people to volunteer abroad since 2007, IVHQ is proud to be the most popular volunteer travel organization for international volunteers. One of the major strengths of IVHQ is our careful selection process in choosing our partner organizations and the high quality volunteer programs that we offer through these partners. Every program that IVHQ offers has been personally inspected by IVHQ. We have experienced the programs first-hand, we have assessed the local teams and we have provided comprehensive IVHQ training to all of our local teams.

In dreaming up the programme Tennis and Literacy for Youth, as a mother, I had hoped to share two of my passions, tennis and reading, with children. Throughout the year, I had advertised for participants at local elementary schools and recruited(招收) volunteers at local high schools. With the help of kind people, I applied for money. I was even able to secure a site for the program.
But on the first day of camp, in spite of my careful planning, things did not go the way I had hoped. Hector and Adrian exchanged blows with their racquet(球拍). Hector struggled to his feet moments later, covering a bloody nose with one hand. Georgie and Eduardo threw balls at each other. Then during reading time, I raced from joyless child to demanding child, unable to convince even one to open a book. They would rather be watching Nickelodeon at home, Eli told me, than “learning stupid tennis and reading boring books”.
I dragged myself home that afternoon. That evening, I called my volunteers together for a meeting, and redesigned the entire curriculum. We created a good-fellow system, where each volunteer paired with a camper to help him or her during reading time. To emphasize praise and progress, we established weekly prize ceremonies, presenting awards for most improved reading, tennis and behavior.
Then Mylea shut the book and asked me, “Can I take this to read it to my mom tonight?” Peering up at her eager face, I couldn’t help myself. I jumped to my feet and wrapped her in a hug, lifting her right off the ground. “It’s all yours!” I said.
Somehow, in the midst of the chaos and the schedule changes and the meetings, these children, in bad mood during reading time, untouched books in their laps, began to find joy in reading a story.
24. What happened the first day of the programme?
A. Participants watched TV at home. B. The programme worked out badly.
C. Volunteers failed to do their duties. D. The plan lived up to the expectation.
25. What did the author do to make the programme a success?
A. She recruited new volunteers.
B. She replaced the books used.
C. She made adjustments to the plan.
D. She established volunteers’ leading part.

A. She sensed something was wrong.
B. She thought Mylea needed comfort.
C. Mylea’s boredom in reading discouraged her.

27. What is the text mainly about?
A. An initiative of being volunteers.
B. An innovation to the teaching method.
C. An insight into helping kids overcome difficulties.
D. An experience of introducing reading and tennis to kids.

The researchers found that more than half of the decline in the Colorado River’s flow is connected to increasing temperatures, and as warming continues, they say the risk of “severe water shortages” for the millions that rely on it is expected to grow.
The study also examined the impact that action to control pollution of heat-trapping gases could have on the river’s water supply. Some decrease in the flow is likely no matter what actions are taken, but without any cuts to emissions, the river’s discharge(流量) could shrink by between 19% and 31% by the middle of this century.
The Colorado River starts high in the Rocky Mountains of Colorado and Wyoming. On its route, this river supplies major cities like Denver, Los Angeles, Las Vegas and San Diego, as well as farms in the US and Mexico that grow the vegetables that feed, millions around the world. It supports around $1 trillion of economic activity each year.
Global warming is reducing the snowpack that feeds the river. As temperatures increase, snow cover in the region is declining, meaning less energy from the sun is reflected back into space and more warms the ground as heat. The river’s flow has also been cut down by a severe drought during the last two decades, leaving its two main reservoirs — Lake Powell and Lake Mead — barely half full.
Udall, a senior climate scientist at Colorado State University, says these new findings show that the only way to save the river is by addressing the root cause of the problem: climate change. “The science is crystal clear we must reduce greenhouse gas emissions immediately,” he says. “We now have the technologies, the policies and favorable economics to accomplish greenhouse gas reductions. What we lack is the will.”
28. With cutting emissions, the river flow would reduce by ______.
A. less than 19% B. about 30%
C. over 19% D. between 19% and 31%
29. What does the author intend to tell us about the Colorado River in paragraph 3?
A. It is a long river. B. It is very important.
C. It makes adequate electricity. D. It flows through more than two countries.
30. Which is one of the effects of the reduction of the snow cover?
A. The weather becomes drier. B. The river gets more water.
C. The ground gets more heat. D. Droughts break out frequently.
31. What prevents people reducing greenhouse gas emissions according to Udall?
A. Lack of will. B. Lack of cooperation.
C. Backward economy. D. Technology unavoidable

The International Mother Language Day is on February 21st and it was created by the United Nations to help preserve indigenous(土著的) languages around the world.
Due to globalization, indigenous languages are increasingly under threat of extinction. Every two weeks a language disappears, taking with it an entire culture’s heritage and thus diminishing the world’s cultural diversity. At least 43 percent of the estimated 6000 languages spoken in the world are endangered, only a few hundred are formally taught and used and fewer than 100 are used in the digital world, according to UNESCO.
Like languages around the world, indigenous Australian languages are under increasing threat of extinction. The Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies understands that in Australia, there were more than 250 indigenous Australian languages, including 800 dialects, or local variations, at the time of European settlement in 1788. Today only about 13 indigenous Australian languages have enough young people speaking them for them to survive.
Indigenous languages everywhere are much more than just a way of communicating. Yuin woman Anne Martin, educator and former national NAIDOC Committee Co-Chair, described indigenous languages as “the breath of life”. “Indigenous languages are not just a means of communication, they express knowledge about everything: Law, geography, history, family and human relationships, philosophy, religion, anatomy, childcare, health, caring for country, astronomy, biology and food. Each language is associated with an area of land and has a deep spiritual significance, and it is through their own languages that indigenous nations maintain their connection with their ancestors, land and law,” she said in an interview published by La Trobe University.
International Mother Language Day has been observed every year since February 2000. In 2019, the theme is: “Indigenous languages matter for development, peace building and reconciliation(和解)”. One of UNESCO’s goals for that year’s International Mother Language Day is to collect proverbs in as many of the world’s indigenous languages as possible. The proverbs were compiled and the most appropriate ones published by the UN on its website and other publications. And the theme for International Mother Language Day 2020 is “Languages without borders”.
32. What does the underlined word “diminishing” in paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. Decrease. B. Add. C. Create. D. Replace.
33. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?
A. The increasing number of indigenous languages.
B. The development of indigenous languages.
C. The endangered situation of indigenous languages.
D. The popularity of indigenous languages.
34. What does Anne Martin think of indigenous languages?
A. They are just used for communication with each other.
B. They are loosely connected with their ancestors, land and law.
C. They are very important for indigenous nations all over the world.
D. They are about not only communication but knowledge about all fields.
35. What is the best title for the text?
A. The Theme of International Mother Language Day.
B. An Introduction of International Mother Language Day.
C. The Protection of Indigenous Languages in the World.
D. The Decrease of Indigenous Languages in the World.

When it comes to getting ahead, is IQ or EQ more important? A thought experiment conducted featuring butterflies and geniuses settles the question once and for all.
36 So if you asked people whether they’d rather be a butterfly or a genius, I’m betting most people wouldn’t hesitate before choosing genius. But butterflies are also social creatures, often gathering in groups. The experiment points out just how big an advantage friendliness can be.
Imagine two groups of people. We’ll call them the Geniuses and the Butterflies for short. 37 They come up with one ground-breaking invention every 10 human lifetimes. The Butterflies aren’t nearly as bright. They take 1,000 lifetimes to come up with a world-changing invention.
But what the Butterflies lack in cognitive(认知的) horsepower, they make up for in social skills. 38 However, the egghead Geniuses are a little awkward. They only have one friend. Now imagine everyone goes about their business trying to learn about cool, new inventions, either by figuring them out for themselves or learning about them from friends. 39 The one where the people are a hundred times smarter(the Geniuses) or the one where they’re 10 times more social(the Butterflies)?
Well, communicating ideas within a group might not feel as impressive as coming up with brilliant ideas alone in a corner. Chatty Cathys(滔滔不绝的人) clearly have less cultural mystery than Nobel winners. But without them, new ideas don’t spread fast enough to make big impact. 40
This fascinating thought experiment is good news for the communicators and connectors of the world, but it’s also a valuable lesson for anyone putting together a team.
A. Which society does better?
B. Each Butterfly has 10 friends.
C. The Geniuses are, well, geniuses.
D. Butterflies are pretty but lacking in strength.
E. Is it hard for the experiment to draw a conclusion?
F. In terms of group success, EQ matters more than raw IQ.
G. The Butterflies shouldn’t be compared with the Geniuses.

故选A项。
选项C(土著语言的濒危状况。)

选项B(国际母语日简介。)

38.根据前文“But what the Butterflies lack in cognitive(认知的) horsepower, they make up for in social skills.”(但是蝴蝶们在认知能力上的不足,在社交能力上得到了弥补。)可知,此处是讲蝴蝶出色的社交能力,所以选项B(每只蝴蝶有10个朋友。)
故选A。
40.根据前文“But without them, new ideas don’t spread fast enough to make big impact.”(但如果没有他们,新思想的传播速度就不足以产生重大影响。) 所以选项F(就团队成功而言,情商比单纯的智商更重要。)

故填the。
此处应为with的复合结构“with+宾语+宾补”,且the rainy season与begin构成主动关系,故应用现在分词。故填beginning。
故填which。
故填in。
故填to touch。

故去掉was或在was前加which/that。
a (good) sense of意为“…… 故将for改为of。
前文“there were many competitors”和后文“I succeeded in entering the final”构成转折关系,所以此处为让步状语从句。 故将Since改为Though/Although/While。
knowledge(知识),为不可数名词,没有复数形式。
