Kathy Sullivan and an underwater explorer named Victor Vescovo dived 10,915 meters below the surface of the Pacific Ocean in a submarine(潜艇), making the 68-year-old ex-astronaut the first woman ever to reach that depth and Vescovo the only person to have dived to the place three times. Dr.Sullivan was among the first women to join NASA as an astronaut. In 1984, she took part in a 3.5-hour spacewalk and became the first American woman to take part in activities in space outside of a spacecraft. But she has also intended to contribute something to the ocean. After she left NASA in 1993, she began working for NOAA(National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) as its chief scientist.
The goal of the submarine dive was the Mariana Trench, the deepest valley in the ocean floor. And its deepest part, also the deepest point on Earth is known as Challenger Deep that is nearly 11 kilometers below the surface of the ocean.
At present, there’s only one submarine called Limiting Factor in the world that can take two people down that far. It was built for Vescovo. Last year, Vescovo used it to map the deepest points in all five of the world’s oceans. He is the first person to have done this. Because it’s so hard to get down to Challenger Deep, before Dr. Sullivan, only seven people had ever reached it. This time, the two spent about an hour and a half at the bottom, taking pictures of the area to be used for Sullivan’s studies. The time is required to adjust to the changing pressure from the weight of the water above, and it took four hours for the submarine to come back to the surface. After that, they made a phone call to the International Space Station(ISS) to compare ideas with the astronauts about what was similar between their experiences. For Dr. Sullivan, this experience was a “once-in-a-lifetime day”.
24. How many times had Vescovo dived to Challenger Deep before Sullivan?
A. 1. B. 2 C. 3. D. 4.
25. Which of the following can best describe Sullivan?
A. Considerate. B. Ambitious. C. Modest. D. Cautious.
26. Why did it take Sullivan and Veseovo 4 hours to return to the surface?
A. They mapped the deepest points.
B. They took pictures in the submarine.
C. They had to handle the water pressure.
D. They phoned the ISS to exchange ideas.
27. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. Kathy Sullivan: from space to the deep ocean
B. Challenger Deep: the deepest point on Earth
C. The deepest ocean dive equipment Limiting Factor
D. Vescovo and Kathy Sullivan’s once-in-a-lifetime day
C
Bridging the gap between simple automation(自动化) and robots that can communicate with humans naturally is a big challenge, but major progress has been made in the past few years.
Research into social robots has shown that machines that respond to emotion(情感) can help the elderly and children, and could lead to robots becoming more widely socially acceptable.
Milo is both a robotic teacher and a student. Developers RoboKind created Milo to help children with autism(自闭症) learn more about emotional expression and empathy(共鸣) while collecting data on their progress to target learning and treatment. Milo’s friendly face makes himself kind and the children are able to read his expressions.
Robots can also reduce stress in hospital settings. Expper Tech’s Robin was designed as a robot to provide emotional support for children with medical treatment. Robin explains medical details to them, plays games and tells stories, and during treatment draws their attention away to reduce their feeling of pain.
Expper’s robot uses Artificial Intelligence(AI) to create empathy, remembering expressions and conversations to build conversation for follow-up sessions. In trials at the Wigmore Medical Pediatric Clinic in Yerevan. Armenia, the team found that Robin led to a 34% weakening in stress and improve happiness of 26% in the 120 children who interacted(互动) with him at least once.
Today’s simple systems are being trained to meet that demand. This includes ProxEmo, a little wheeled robot that can guess how you are feeling from the way you walk, and ENRICHME who helps older people to stay physically and mentally active. The problem is the fear that human jobs may be lost as robots become better at dealing with social situations.
28. What makes children feel Milo’s kindness?
A. Milo’s appearance. B. Milo’s speech.
C. Milo’s hospital settings. D. Milo’s way of walking.
29. How does the author show Robin’s advantage in paragraph 5?
A. By listing numbers. B. By making comments.
C. By following the time order. D. By explaining the process.
30. Which is the best choice for an old man who wants to be active?
A. Milo. B. Robin. C. ProxEmo. D. ENRICHME.
31. What do people mainly worry about?
A. Robots can’t meet their demand. B. Some people will be out of work.
C. A robot isn’t widely acceptable. D. Robots can’t deal with problems.
D
Those who want to set up office in the garden as temperatures rise should think twice or put a hat on. A new study shows that sunshine could diminish brain power, making it harder to make the right judgments.
Working in hot temperatures is already known to cause hyperthermia — a rise in body temperature — which can cause physical exhaustion. But now scientists say prolonged exposure of the head to the sun also affects the brain’s ability to function properly.
The study by university teams in Denmark and Greece said workers could be damaging their brains by working in hot, sunny conditions. Eight healthy, active males aged between 27 and 41 took part in the research. The brain function test consisted of four different computer-based maths and logic tasks that relied on precise calculations. Four heat lamps were positioned to radiate either on the lower body or the back, side and top of their heads. Professor Lars Nybo of the department of nutrition, exercise and sports at the University of Copenhagen, said, “This study provides evidence that direct exposure to sunlight — especially to the head — impairs motor and cognitive performance.”
The decline in motor and cognitive performance was observed at 38.5 degrees. Researchers said those exposed to sunlight for long periods should cover their heads. Professor Andtreas Flouis, of the FAME Laboratory in Greece, said: “It is of great importance that people working or undertaking daily activities outside should protect their head against sunlight.”
Drops in mental performance caused by sunshine could also mean drivers were more likely to make mistakes on the road, Andtreas Flouis suggested.
32. What does the underlined word “diminish” in paragraph 1 mean?
A. Weaken. B. Improve. C. Achieve. D. Change.
33. What is the function of the heat lamps in the study?
A. To light up the night. B. To give off heat.
C. To warm the offices. D. To increase the difficulty of tasks.
34. What does Lars Nybo think of the study?
A. Useless. B. Doubtful. C. Narrow. D. Meaningful.
35. What’s the Andtreas Flouis’ suggestion for workers in the sun?
A. Wearing a hat. B. Reducing workload.
C. Having a medical examination. D. Doing exercises regularly.

Cold weather during winter months may keep many people from leaving home and running in the open air. However, a new study shows that the drop in temperature is a good reason to run. 36
Many people say running in winter can be difficult. Two reasons are the low temperatures and bitter winds. 37 That could be because lower temperatures reduce stress on the body. When you run in cold weather, your heart rate and the body’s dehydration(脱水) levels are lower than in warmer conditions. 38
This information comes from John Brewer, who is a professor of applied sport science at St. Mary’s. For this study, he and other researchers put a group of people into a room they called an “environmental chamber”. The researchers then recreated summer and winter weather conditions in the room. 39 Brewer says he and his team recorded biological measurements of the runners.
He says that the most important thing for people who run in cold conditions is to wear the right clothing. Wear gloves on your hands. 40 And especially wear more than one layer of clothing to keep sweat away from your skin.
A. Yet many runners might find it easier than running in hot weather.
B. We have good reasons to run in winter.
C. Wear shoes that will keep you from falling.
D. Many feel nervous when running in the cold weather.
E. The body needs less water on a cold day than in warm weather.
F. In fact, running in cold weather helps improve one’s performance.
G. The test subjects were asked to run 10,000 meters under both conditions.

on the way为固定搭配,意为“在……途中”,故填on。
64.考查动词时态。根据句子结构分析,此处为谓语,用一般过去时态,故填headed。
65.考查副词。根据句意可知,此处修饰动词explained,意为“进一步解释”,故填further。
66.考查定冠词。此处为“the+形容词”结构,表示一类人或物,the old指老人,故填the。
67.考查非谓语动词。根据句子结构分析可知,此处为时间状语从句When we are caring for someone的省略用法,当从句中的主语与主句主语一致且谓语动词为be时,则可省略该主语和be动词,故应填caring。

be fond of:喜欢,先行词为sport,在定语从句中作介词of的宾语。
故将where改为when。
故将but改为and。
或用many a+名词单数。故将bird改为 birds或在many后面加a。
故将the改为an。
故去掉was。
故将they改为we。
Dear Chairman,
I am Li Hua and I am writing to recommend myself as a star of labor.
When I was young, I lived on a farm. I would get up early and do assigned farm work with my parents. For example, I helped water the plants and pick up vegetables. I was even taught how to make tofu. With the help of my parents, I finally made tofu successfully, which brought me great happiness. While working, I realized how hard it was to work with my own hands and how happy it was to enjoy the fruit(s) of my labor.
I think I am qualified for the star of labor. Hopefully I can make it.
Yours,
Li Hua
