They were once kids with common problems, too. They were against schoolwork, fought with their brothers and sisters, and argued with their parents. Dwight Eisenhower dealt with these problems. Bill Clinton struggled with his weight. Barack Obama moved to Indonesia with his mother when he was just a boy, and had to get used to a new culture.

  A Native (土著的) American language is in danger of disappearing. The last known native speaker of Klallam was Hazel Sampson. She died on February 4, 2014, at the age of 103.

“We lost a person who kept our culture and language alive,” said Ron Allen, chairman of the Jamestown S’Klallam Tribe.

A native speaker is someone who speaks a language from an early age. When all native speakers of a language die, their descendants (后代) lose a valuable part of their history and culture.

In the 1870s, the U.S. government tried to eliminate (取缔) many Native American languages by forcing Native American children to attend schools which required them to speak and read only in English.

Government officials later realized the importance of preserving (保护) these languages. In 1990, the Native American Languages Act (NALA) was passed in order to preserve Native American languages. Since then, Native American languages have been allowed to be spoken and taught in schools. 

But many of the languages have already been lost. In the past, there were more than 300 Native American languages. But it’s said that fewer than 200 remain now. Some have only several speakers. And about 70 of the languages may go silent in the next five years.

Jamie Valadez, who teaches Klallam in a school in Washington State, says Sampson’s death is a huge blow to the Klallam language and culture.

Before she died, Sampson helped to create a Klallam dictionary. Now Klallam is being taught as a second language in three schools in Washington.
