Bill Gates and the president of General Motors have met for lunch, and Bill is going on and on about computer technology.“If automotive technology had kept pace with computer technology over the past few decades, you would now be driving a V32 instead of a V8,and it would have a top speed of 10,000 miles per hour,” says Gates.“Or,you could have an economy car that weighs 30 pounds and gets a thousand miles to a gallon of gas.In either case, the sticker price of a new car would be less than $50.Why haven't you guys kept up?”
The president of GM smiles and says,“Because the federal government won't let us build cars that crash four times a day.”
Why is that funny (or not funny,as the case may be)? Human beings love to laugh, and the average adult laughs 17 times a day.Humans love to laugh so much that there are actually industries built around laughter.Jokes, sitcoms and comedians are all designed to get us laughing, because laughing feels good. For us it seems so natural, but the funny thing is that humans are one of the only species that laughs.Laughter is actually a complex response that involves many of the same skills used in solving problems.
Laughter is a great thing — that's why we've all heard the saying,“Laughter is the best medicine.” There is strong evidence that laughter can actually improve health and help fight disease. In this article,we'll look at laughter — what it is,what happens in our brains when we laugh, what makes us laugh and how it can make us healthier and happier. You'll also learn that there's a tremendous amount that no one understands yet.

To grow sugary dates(海枣) in the sand,Siwa's farmers must first make the desert suitable for farming. An oasis(绿洲)in Egypt,Siwa has been home to humans for thousands of years.Since ancient times, the oasis has hosted farms producing some of the most valuable dates in Egypt, and the sugary dates have appeared on Egyptians' tables.
The desert environment in Siwa is not quite fit for plants to grow. For example, the water there contains much salt. However,it is with local people's effort that date trees, crops and other plants grow in harmony despite the complex agricultural fields, which impressed me a lot during my visit to the oasis. To make a new piece of field, farmers first remove the top soil and replace it with a mixture of sand and waste matter from animals. The first plants are medicinal plants. Then, farmers plant date trees and olive trees. These farming skills are passed down from generation to generation.
To grow date trees is demanding. And it takes 10 years for a new date tree to mature, but once it does, the tree produces generous fruit: around 110 pounds of dates per year. Each farmer picks dates with the skilled hands. They climb the trees using nothing more than a belt.In total,Siwa grows more than 25,000 tons of dates from 280,000 trees per year.
The dates can be eaten fresh,or made dry.Every part of the date tree is significant in Siwa, from leaves made into beds and boxes to wood used to build houses. And then,of course, there's the fruit itself. The dates can be cooked with goat meat or mixed with eggs for breakfast. They can also be mixed with flour, water, and olive oil,and boiled slowly to make a local dessert.

The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new.During the last five years,a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into fabric to deal with plastic pollution. But there's a problem with this method.Research now shows that microfibers could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea.
Dr.Mark Browne in Santa Barbara,California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years now.He explains that every time synthetic clothes go into a washing machine,a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can't collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers are entering the sewers and finally end up in the sea.
In 2011,Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic(合成的) clothing can produce more than 1,900 fibers per wash.Browne collected samples from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers.
This is bad news for a number of reasons.Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten.Studies have also shown that plastic can absorb other pollutants.
Based on this evidence,it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution”. Even though the science has been around for a while,Browne explains that he's had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked wellknown clothing companies to support Benign by Design—his research project that seeks to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market,Browne didn't get a satisfying answer.Only one women's clothing company,Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding.

Ⅱ.阅读七选五(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Recycling refers to the process of collecting used materials which are usually considered as “waste” and reprocessing them. Some of the most common items that are recycled are plastic, glass, paper, batteries, etc.Recycling is good for us,for manufacturers (制造商) and for our environment. 16 Here are some good reasons why everyone should recycle.
One of the biggest reasons is that recycling reduces the pressure on our environment.By using waste products in a meaningful way,we can slowly decrease the size of our landfills. As the population grows,it will become difficult for the landfills to hold so much trash. When this happens, our cities will face pollution, poisoning and many health problems. 17
We know that recycling involves the processing and usage of core elements of old products for the production of new products. 18 For example, once an old newspaper is recycled,we do not need to use the resource of another tree to produce new paper products. This way, proper recycling can help us preserve our natural resources.
19 Reusing old things costs less than buying new ones.In most states in America,it's actually more costly to get rid of waste than to recycle. Some recycling companies buy wastes from neighborhoods for their recycling activities. This brings you extra money.
Everyone can make a difference. If you think that it makes no difference whether you recycle or not, think again! More than half of the waste that each of us creates each year can be recycled, but a lot of it ends up being buried. 20 After all, many hands make light work.
A.Recycling is good for your wallet.
B.This helps in saving our natural resources.
C.It stops humans from damaging the environment.
D Recycling helps to get rid of old things and waste.
E.However, not everyone knows how important it is to recycle.

The big Town Hall clock was striking midnight when Frank began to cross the bridge. The dark night air was cold and a little wet,and the street lamp gave little light.Frank was anxious to get home and his footsteps rang loudly on the silent night.
When he reached the middle of the bridge,he thought he could hear someone coming near behind him.He looked back but could see no one. However, the sound continued and Frank began to walk more quickly. Then he slowed down again, thinking there was nothing to fear in a town as quiet as this.
Just then,he heard short, quick steps closely behind him.By the time he reached the other side of the bridge,he could almost feel someone at his heels. He turned round and there stood a man in a large coat.A hat was pulled down over his eyes and very little of his face could be seen.
Frank said something about the weather in an effort to be friendly. The man did not answer but asked roughly where Oakfield House was.Frank pointed to a big house in the distance and the stranger continued his way.
Then Frank wondered why the stranger had wanted to find Oakfield House at such an hour.He knew that the people who lived there were very rich.Almost without realizing what he was doing,he began following the stranger quickly.
The man was soon outside the house and Frank saw him look up at the windows.A light was still on and the man waited until it went out. When about half an hour had passed,Frank saw him climb noiselessly over the wall and heard him drop on the ground at the other side.
注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;
2.请按所下格式作答。

Frank couldn't just stand in the dark and wait.
【参考范文】
Now Frank knew what the man wanted to do.Everyone knew that Oakfield House was filled with artwork worth millions of dollars. It was clear to Frank that the family inside was in danger.Would the man have a weapon? Would he be strong enough to overpower him before he could harm the people inside? Frank's heart was racing with fear.He reached for his cell phone to call the police, but found it out of power. If only he had charged his phone before leaving the office, but it was too late.
Frank couldn't just stand in the dark and wait.He had to do something, even if it meant risking his own life.At his feet he silently found several goodsized stones, and he threw them with all his strength right at the windows of the house. The clatter woke up the people inside the house and a light came on upstairs. The man froze, not quite knowing what had just happened.Lights came on everywhere in the house and within a minute the night was filled with sounds of police sirens screaming towards Oakfield House.
