Residential College Writing Tutors
The Residential College Writing Tutors are currently working via email and Zoom. Sign up the way you always have (link is external),and a confirmation email will explain how to access your tutor at the time of your appointment.
Residential College Writing Tutors work with Yale College undergraduates. See Graduate Writing Consultations if you are a graduate student needing assistance.
Preparing for Your Session
·Make an appointment (link is external) with your college’s Writing Tutor.
·Carefully read the confirmation email,as each tutor offers slightly different instructions about preparing for appointments.
What to Expect
Many tutors will read your paper in advance, although a few prefer that you do that work together. Either way, most sessions will start with the tutor asking you what you hope to accomplish, which might include questions about the assignment or a discussion of your experience writing similar papers. The tutor will then discuss the most important areas for revision. Tutors won’t tell you exactly what to do to fix your essay, but they will help you figure out strategies for revision and prompt you to take notes on the suggestions that arise. Often the most important changes involve the primary claims of the paper or the structure of your argument.
Writing Tutors can also help you with grammar and style, although not by proof reading your whole essay; instead, the two of you might edit a paragraph together, looking for suggestions that you can then incorporate into the rest of your paper.
lf you have worked with the same tutor before, there will be more time to discuss general trends in your writing,or to work quickly through basic concerns and move on to specific needs of the current paper. One benefit of the Residential College Writing Tutors is the opportunity to work over several years with someone who knows your writing well.
1. Who can make an appointment with Residential College Writing Tutors?
A. PhD students. B. Undergraduate students.
C. High school students. D. Graduate students.
2. What will Writing Tutors not do?
A. Proofread your whole essay. B. Help you with grammar and style.

Craig grew up on “a gentleman's farm” in Colorado with horses, cows, and chickens. When he was 18, Craig was already running some of the businesses. He planned to earn a business degree in college, but on a fateful trip to Florida, he visited a friend who worked as a grounds-keeper at a zoo. “I just wanted to say hi, but he showed me around, and in the back, I saw lions and tigers in these cages that were so small that you 'wouldn't want to keep a dog in them,” he says. The animals were surplus(过剩)and would likely be euthanized(使安乐死).
When a sad Craig returned to Colorado, he called the Denver Zoo about taking the animals, but Denver's zookeepers also had a surplus. Then it occurred to him: Perhaps he could bring the animals to the family farm. He was only 19, but he studied local regulations and formed a nonprofit organization. He next wrote zoos nationwide offering to help if they planned to euthanize animals.
After about five years, he bought a second, larger property before moving to the shelter's current location northeast of Denver. The goal, he says, is to provide the animals with plentiful space and to treat them with dignity and respect. “We have prides of lions that live together, just like they would in the wild,” he says. “They're wandering free and playing and doing what they want. We just give them medical care and food.”
Craig opened the shelter to visitors in 2002. Although he was originally unwilling, Craig now sees it as an opportunity to educate more people. “We want the public to know, if they hear about some guy driving around in his Ferrari with a tiger or a lion, they should say, What are you doing? That animal is going to end up dead or in some dirty roadside zoo.” The shelter receives 150,000 guests a year. Given his goal of treating the animals with respect-the shelter prohibits feeding and hands-on human contact -visitors observe the animals from a 30-foot-high, 1.5-mile-long elevated walkway.
4. What made Craig decide to help animals?
A. The need to run his farm.
B. The influence from his friend.
C. The concern for animals to be euthanized
D. The plan to earn a business degree from a college.
5. Why did Craig pay for a larger property?
A. To draw visitors.
B. To play with animals.
C. To live a comfortable life.
D. To offer animals more space.
6. How do visitors observe the animals in the shelter?
A. By riding a car.
B. By taking an elevator.
C. Through contact with animals.
D. From the passage above the ground.
7. Which of the following best describes Craig's work in the animal shelter?
A. Admirable. B. Well-paid. C. Boring. D. Appealing.
C 5. D 6. D 7. A

The federal school lunch program for 30 million low-income children was created more than half a century ago to combat malnutrition(营养不良). A breakfast program was added during the 1960s, and both attempted to improve the nutritional value of food served at school.
More must be done to fight the childhood obesity epidemic(流行的), which has caused a frightening peak in weight-related disorders like diabetes, high-blood pressure and heart disease among young people. The place to start is schools, where junk food sold outside the federal meals program—through snack bars and vending machines—has pretty much canceled out the benefits of all those efforts.
Federal rules that govern the sales of these harmful foods at school are limited and have not been updated for nearly 40 years. Until new regulations are written, children who are served healthy meals in the school cafeteria will continue to buy candy drinks and high sodium(钠) snacks elsewhere in school.
Many states’ school districts have taken positive steps, but others are likely to resist, especially districts that sell junk food to finance athletic program extracurricular activities, and even copier expenses.
Those districts should take note of a study released in 2009 in West Virginia showing that the budgetary costs of switching from sodas to healthy drinks such as fruit juice, milk, and water were very little. Even if the switch costs money, so be it. The school should not be trading their students’ health to buy office supplies.
Over the last 50 years, the obesity rates for adolescents have tripled. Unless there is decisive action, weight and inactivity-related disorders will bother a steady larger proportion of the work force and replace smoking as the leading cause of premature death.
8. According to this passage, ______ are to blame for the childhood obesity.
A. weight-related disorders
B. high calorie snacks
C. parents’ bad habits
D. unhealthy lunches and breakfast
9. Which is the main idea of Paragraph 3?
A. Federal governments deserve high praise for their school lunch program.
B. New regulations are badly in need of updating.
C. Children should be forbidden to buy snacks in school.
D. Federal rules encourage snacks outside the school program
10. The passage is concerned mainly with ______.
A. Malnutrition in low-income children
B. The federal school lunch program
C. obesity at school
D. the nutritional value of food served at schoo
11. The tone of the passage is ______.
A. negative B. indifferent C. ironic D. positive

根据文章第三段“Federal rules that govern the sales of these harmful foods at school are limited and have not been updated for nearly 40 years. Until new regulations are written, children who are served healthy meals in the school cafeteria will continue to buy candy drinks and high sodium(钠) snacks elsewhere in school.( 联邦规则里关于这些有害食品在学校的销售是有限的,但是已近40年没有更新。在新的规定出台之前,在学校食堂吃健康食品的孩子将继续在学校其他地方购买糖果饮料和高钠零食。)”可推测,本段讲述新的规章制度急需更新。故选B。

The joy of giving is real, according to a study. Research presented in the Journal of the Association for Psychological Science shows that those who give gifts are happier — and happier for longer — than those who receive gifts.
Researchers conducted two studies last year. In one, participants were given $5 every day for five days and were required to spend the money on the same thing each day. Some participants were required to spend the money on themselves, while others were required to give to make a donation to charity. In a second experiment that was done online, participants played 10 rounds of a word puzzle game and each won 5 cents per round, which they could keep or donate.
In both experiments, participants reported their overall happiness. Those who donated their money showed that their happiness declined at a much slower rate than those who kept the money or spent it on themselves.
The researchers note that when people focus on an outcome, they can easily compare outcomes, which may diminish their sensitivity to each experience. When people focus on an action, they may focus less on comparison and instead experience each act of giving as a unique happiness-inducing event. Further analyses ruled out some potential alternative explanations, such as the possibility that participants who gave to others had to think longer and harder about what to give, which could promote higher happiness.
The results are especially interesting because according to one of the researchers, Ed O’Brien of the University of Chicago Booth School of Business, they conflict with past research. “If you want to sustain happiness over time, past research tells us that we need to take a break from what were currently consuming and experience something new. Our research reveals that the kind of thing may matter more than assumed: Repeated giving, even in identical ways to identical other, may continue to feel relatively fresh and relatively pleasurable the more we do it,” O’Brien said.
So for all the holiday gifts you give this season, expect to feel happy and know that feeling is going to stick around for a while.
12. What’s the function of the first paragraph?
A. To lead to the topic.
B. To highlight the importance of the study.
C. To recommend a journal.
D. To persuade people to give gifts regularly.
13. Why did the researchers do two experiments?
A. To challenge the past research.
B. To rule out different experimental data.
C. To show the benefits of donation.
D. To make the conclusion more convincing.
14. What does the underlined word “diminish” probably mean in the fourth paragraph?
A. Develop. B. Show. C. Reduce. D. Lack.
15. What’s the main finding of the new study?
A. Gift giving will result in longer happiness than receiving.
B. Thinking longer and harder on giving will promote higher happiness.
C. The feeling of happiness will disappear soon if people just give holiday gifts.
D. Taking a break from what were currently consuming will sustain happiness.
A 13. D 14. C 15. A

根据文章第一段“The joy of giving is real, according to a study. Research presented in the Journal of the Association for Psychological Science shows that those who give gifts are happier — and happier for longer — than those who receive gifts. ”( 一项研究表明,给予的快乐是真实的。发表在《心理科学协会杂志》上的一项研究表明,那些送礼物的人比那些收礼物的人更快乐,而且更快乐的时间更长。)以及下文的实验研究结果都表明送礼物的人比收礼物的人更快乐,而且更快乐的时间更长可推知,第一段的作用是引出主题。故选A。
根据文章第一段“In both experiments, participants reported their overall happiness. Those who donated their money showed that their happiness declined at a much slower rate than those who kept the money or spent it on themselves.”(在两个实验中,参与者报告了他们的总体幸福感。
根据下文“When people focus on an action, they may focus less on comparison and instead experience each act of giving as a unique happiness-inducing event.”
根据文章倒数第二段“Our research reveals that the kind of thing may matter more than assumed: Repeated giving, even in identical ways to identical other, may continue to feel relatively fresh and relatively pleasurable the more we do it” (我们的研究表明,这类事情可能比我们想象的更重要:不断给予,甚至以相同的方式给予相同的人,我们做得越多,可能会持续感到相对新鲜和相对愉悦。)
题干中常含infer(推断),suggest(暗示),imply(暗示),indicate(暗示),conclude(推断,得出结论)等词语。 如小题1,根据文章第一段“The joy of giving is real, according to a study. Research presented in the Journal of the Association for Psychological Science shows that those who give gifts are happier — and happier for longer — than those who receive gifts. ”( 一项研究表明,给予的快乐是真实的。发表在《心理科学协会杂志》上的一项研究表明,那些送礼物的人比那些收礼物的人更快乐,而且更快乐的时间更长。)以及下文的实验研究结果都表明那些送礼物的人比那些收礼物的人更快乐,而且更快乐的时间更长,可知文章主题就是此研究结果,故选A。

【答案】To travel is to learn
Good morning, everyone. It’s my great privilege to stand here and share something about traveling. Without doubt, there are a great many ways to learn. Let’s say, to read is to learn. But what I’d like to convey is that to travel is also to learn. Traveling broadens our horizons with our own eyes, noses and so on. Take my journey to Xi’an as an example. Previously, reading books and viewing pictures and videos only made me aware of the existence of Terracotta Warriors and a number of local delicacies, but nothing more. However, upon arriving in Xi’an, it dawned on me how spectacular the city was. When tasting the foods, I came to know what the tradition was. So when we are traveling, we really experience something, thus enhancing our understanding of it. So everyone, just seize the chance and start an amazing journey to learn.
That’s all. Thank you!

A Simple Thank You
I have been in the teaching profession for more than thirty years, and one of the best teachers I have ever known was Mr Rowe. I was lucky enough to co-teach fourth grade with him.
Mr Rowe had infinite patience and understanding and I learned so much from watching him. He could perform miracles, like the one he performed with Steven, one of the unhappiest kids I ever saw. Steven couldn't stand school. He didn't like being picked last for kickball. He didn't like the kids who raised their hands and knew all the answers, and most importantly, he didn't like himself.
The first day he walked into Mr Rowe's classroom, he ignored the other students, looking angry and annoyed, and slid into his chair, knocking a couple of textbooks onto the floor.
Mr Rowe walked over to him and touched Steven's shoulder, but Steven pulled away. Nevertheless, Mr Rowe welcomed him: "Hi, Steven. I'm happy you are in my class. We are gonna have a great year." Steven looked around the room as if Mr Rowe must be mistaken. No teacher in his right mind would want Steven to be part of his classroom.
So, while Mr Rowe seemed cheerful and relaxed that day of school, it seemed like Steven was angry and confused.
That day after classes, Mr Rowe chose Steven to pitch the kickball at recess. "Hey, Steven," Mr Rowe commented, "you are good at pitching. Let me show you my secret trick." Mr Rowe taught Steven one of the tricks that not a single kid could perform. Steven learned fast and did quite well! Everyone cheered for him!
After the kickball Steven sat as closer to Mr Rowe in classes as he could. When a question was asked, Steven lit up; he knew the answer! He raised his hands, when he answered the question, his voice shook. However, he got the answer right! He said, with Mr Rowe, his days of the fourth grade promised wonderful.
That is not to say that every day went smoothly, but it was evident that Steven grew to love Mr Rowe more and more with each passing day.
Paragraph 1:
Time passed quickly that year, and before we all knew it, it was the last day of school.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Paragraph 2:
Many years later, Mr Rowe and I were surprised when a handsome young man walked into our classroom, dressed in the Marine Corps(海军)uniform.
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
Time passed quickly that year, and before we all knew it, it was the last day of school. Our school had a very special tradition on the last day. All the teachers filled the sidewalk, waving goodbye to the kids as the buses pulled out with their horns honking. But on that particular day, Steven walked slowly to the bus, his head down, tears in his eyes. He boarded the bus reluctantly, hesitated, and then ran back off the bus to hug Mr Rowe. "I don't want to leave you." He sobbed. With red-rimmed eyes, Mr Rowe comforted him, "I will miss you, too."
Paragraph 2:
Many years later, Mr Rowe and I were surprised when a handsome young man walked into our classroom, dressed in the Marine Corps uniform. The young man stood tall and proud. It was Steven! Mr Rowe and I couldn't believe our eyes. He saluted and hugged Mr Rowe tightly! "I have come back to school today just to say thanks to you!" It is my hope that every teacher is blessed with such an experience of a former student coming back to simply say thanks.
