This week, we answer a question from a listener who writes: I work with some native speakers of English. I want to practice speaking with them so I'll improve my English. But sometimes, I get nervous, so our conversation ends quickly. How can I talk with these friends for a long time?
You are right. It is not always easy to keep a conversation going in English. You might not be sure about what to say. Or maybe you are afraid that your pronunciation is not good.
First, remember the importance of listening. Listen to other people carefully, so that you can ask a follow-up question. For example, let's say a person tells you, "I just got back from a trip to Canada." You can follow up with a question using Who, What, Where, When, Why, or How: Where did you go in Canada? What was your favorite place there? How was the food there? If you want to keep a conversation going, it's a good idea to ask questions that cannot be answered with a simple "yes" or "no", If a person asks you a "yes" or "no" question, try to give a longer answer to help keep the conversation going. For example, a friend might ask, " Hey, have you seen the new movie?" You could just answer, "No, I haven't." Or, you could say more. You could answer, "No, but I plan to see it soon. How about you?"
Do not worry about your pronunciation. Though your pronunciation might be a little different, other people will still understand your message if you try to speak slowly and clearly. When you're travelling in an English-speaking country and have some free time, be brave and speak in English with someone who does not look too busy. You may make a new friend.
OK, that's it. We would like to hear from you. Please understand that we cannot answer all of the questions our listeners send us.
27.Which problem does the listener mainly face according to this passage?
A. He can't understand what the native speakers say.
B. He always gets nervous when he listens to English.
C. He always worries about his pronunciation when speaking.
D. He doesn't know how to continue his conversation in English.
28. In the third paragraph, how does the adviser support his suggestion?
A. By explaining reasons.
B. By giving examples.
C. By comparing facts.
D. By using what others say.
29.According to this passage, which of the following statements is RIGHT?
A. It's a good way to ask " Wh-" questions to keep the conversation going successfully.
B. Asking questions that are answered with a "yes" or "no" can help keep the conversation going.
C. When you talk with others, you should make sure your pronunciation is perfect.
D. You don't need to listen to others carefully to communicate with them well.

China is a nation of etiquette(礼仪),Chinese people are among the most hospitable people in the world. If foreigners visit a Chinese family, they would be surprised at the warmth that they would receive as guests.
When you visit a Chinese family, the host usually makes tea for you. Then he will serve you snacks like biscuits or candy. Someone in the family will also chat with you, never letting you feel lonely.
At the same time, other family members will prepare a meal for you. Chinese people treat their guests with a big meal. They always present more food than the guest can eat. At table, the guest must be the first to eat. Perhaps one of the things that surprises a Western guest most is that the Chinese host likes to pick food for visitors, which won't happen at Western tables. 【B篇短文大意】本文讲述了中国是一个礼仪之邦,中国人对待客人非常热情,并且介绍了中国的家庭是如何接待客人的。
25.A 词义猜测题。Step One;先确定这个单词所在的句子"Chinese people are among the most hospitable people in the world".Step Two:根据画线词所在句的上下句进行推测。我们从"China is a nation of etiquette(礼仪)”(中国是一个礼仪之邦)和"If foreigners visit a Chinese family, they would be surprised at the warmth that they would receive as guests"(如果外国人到中国人家里去做客,他们会对中国人的热情感到吃惊)中的关键信息"warmth""as guests"推测 hospitable 意为“好客的"。Step Three: 通读全文,验证推测。根据下文中的"Being
warm and hospitable has long been..."我们可以看出,and作为并列词连接了warm 和hospitable,说明这两个单词为同义词,warm 意为“热情的”,所以最后我们可以确定答案为A.
26.D 细节理解题。根据第三段中的"Perhaps one of the things that surprises a Western guest most is that the Chinese host likes to pick food for visitors, which won't happen at Western tables"可知,也许,其中让西方人最吃惊的事情之一是,中国的主人喜欢为客人夹菜,而这不会发生在西方的餐桌上,由此可知选D.

You either have it, or you don't - a sense of direction. But why is it that some people could find their way across the Sahara without a map while others can lose themselves in the next street?
Scientists say we're all born with a sense of direction, but it is not properly understood how it works. One theory(理论) is that people with a good sense of direction have simply worked harder at developing it. The research being carried out at Liverpool University supports this idea and suggests that if we don't use it, we will lose it.
"Children as young as seven have the ability to find their way around," says Jim Martland, research director of the project. "However, if they are not allowed out alone or are taken everywhere by car, they will never develop the skill."
Jim Martland also emphasizes that young people should be taught certain skills to improve their sense of direction. He makes the following suggestions:
●If you are using a map, turn it to the way you are facing.
●If you leave your bike in a strange place, put it near something like a big stone or a tree - something easy to recognize(辨别出)。Note landmarks(地标) on the route as you go away from your bike. When you return, go back along the same route.
●The simple way of finding your direction is by using streets in a town, streams, or wells in the countryside to guide you. Count your steps so that you know how far you have gone and note some landmarks such as tall buildings or hills which can help to find out where you are.
Now you will never get lost again!

Shyness can be an unhappy feeling. But the good news is, you're not alone. Scientists say that more than 40 percent of teenagers and adults consider themselves shy.
Scientists say genes(基因),life experiences, and environment can influence whether a person is shy or not. For example, in some families, everybody seems to be shy.
What happens if you are shy? Well, being shy may cause you to avoid or miss opportunities you would enjoy.
How do people overcome(克服) shyness? This is what Gilbert tells us. "When I started to get over being shy, I decided to do little steps at a time, including practicing smiling and saying hi to people. And it worked for me."
But shyness is not the kind of thing that most people can get over overnight. Overcoming shyness takes time and needs practice.
Here are some tips given by scientists.
Think of what to talk about before you leave home. Prepare things to talk about before you're in a social situation. For example, if you know your classmates are interested in an upcoming event, learn about it so you can join in the conversation.
Let people know you're shy. If you're shy, just show it. Instead of letting people guess, tell them the truth. Explain that you are shy and feel nervous but enjoy talking to people.
Make things easy for the other person. Remember you're not the only shy person around. Do what you think might help others feel good-for example, say hello or smile.
Pick one social skill to practice at a time. Start simply. For example, smile or be the first person to say hi. Choose skills you feel comfortable enough with to practice for a day, a week, a month, or even a year.
27.According to scientists, ________ can't have an influence on whether a person is shy or not.
A. genes
B. life experiences
C. hobbies
D. environment
28. The writer gives us the example of Gilbert in Paragraph 4 in order to________.
A. show how people overcome shyness
B. introduce a shy boy called Gilbert
C. tell the right time to practice smiling
D. explain the steps of overcoming shyness
29.What does the underlined word "overnight" in Paragraph 5 most probably mean?
A. Correctly.
B. Suddenly.
C. Slowly.
D. Finally.
30.Which of the following is the right way to overcome shyness?
A. Don't let others know that you are shy.
B. Wait for others to say hello to you first.
C. Choose several skills to practice at a time.
D. Get ready before you join in a social situation.

Modern technology has made our life easier. With an Internet connection and a mobile phone, we can find almost anything. This is the sharing economy(经济),and it is now a $ 20 billion-a-year business. But some people wonder how good it is for society in general.
People used to live in a hotel on their vacation, but now they can stay in someone's private house. They pay less, but what influence does this have on the hotel industry and the economy? Hotels receive fewer guests, but they still have to pay salaries(薪水) to their workers and taxes(税) to the government. So some hotels might close down.

One cannot discuss Chinese music without mentioning the guqin, one of the four arts-along with go, calligraphy(书法)and painting. It first appeared over 3,000 years ago and stands for China's solo musical instrument tradition.
At first, the guqin had only five strings(弦),meaning the five elements(元素)of metal, wood, water, fire and earth. Later, in the Zhou Dynasty,King Wen of Zhou added a sixth string for his son. King Wu of Zhou, added a seventh string to encourage his army to fight with the Shang.
Ambience was important in playing the guqin. Usually, it was practiced in a quiet setting and never for a public performance. Ancient artists enjoyed performing by a stream in the mountains. The sound of the guqin mixed with the echoes(回音)from the mountains, until the musician felt he was at one with nature. Playing it in snow was also an enjoyable activity for ancient artists, who believed the instrument was the purest of its kind in the world. Also, a night with moonlight was considered wonderful for playing the guqin. Wang Wei (701 -761), a highly talented man of the Tang Dynasty, liked playing it in a bamboo forest on nights with moonlight most.
Guqin pieces are usually three to eight minutes long, with the longest being Guangling Verse, which is 22 minutes long. Other famous pieces include Plum Blossoms in Three Movements, Wild Geese Landing on the Sandbank and Eighteen Songs Played by Hujia.
Nowadays, there are fewer than one thousand well-trained guqin players and perhaps no more than fifty living masters. Fan Shenghua is one of the inheritors(继承人)of West Lake Longjing tea roasting technique(炒茶技艺)。He has been making Longjing tea for more than forty years.
Longjing tea leaves are famous for their color, taste and shape.
"You have to touch the leaves with your hands to feel how much water is being removed(去除)," Fan said. "If too much is removed, the leaves will break into pieces; if not enough is removed, the tea will taste bitter(苦的)。"
This traditional technique dates back to the Ming and Qing Dynasties. It not only makes the tea taste good, but has also become an important part of Chinese tea culture.
These days, however, more people are using machines to do the job. "It's easier, but the quality is not as good," Fan said. "Machine-made tea floats longer in water and tastes bitter. "
In March last year, when Xi Jinping, general secretary of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, visited Hangzhou, he watched Fan roast tea. Fan changed the strength and movement of his hands as he roasted leaves.
Xi later said, " The things made by two palms(手掌) cannot be replaced by modern technology."

When Emily Cummins was four years old, her grandfather gave her a hammer(锤子)。She loved using it, and started to learn how to make toys from old things.
When she was a teenager, she thought a lot about making inventions to help other people. Emily's another granddad got an illness and had a lot of pain in his hands and fingers. One day, Emily saw that he had problems getting toothpaste out of the tube(软管)。She made an invention that helped him with this, and won Young Engineer for Britain Award for her toothpaste dispenser(自动取物器)。

About eight hundred years ago, a man in southern Turkey invented an amazing clock. It was more than 7 meters high. At its base(基座) was a life-size model elephant. Every half hour, something amazing happened. The whole clock came alive: Model birds, dragons and people started to move.
The clock's inventor was an engineer named al-Jazari. He lived in Turkey. Al-Jazari was probably one of the greatest engineers in history. Some historians call him "the father of modern-day engineering".
We know about al-Jazari mostly from a book that he wrote.________ They include clocks and hand-washing machines. The book also has drawings that show how each machine works.
Many everyday things today-from toys to car engines(发动机)-still use al-Jazari's ideas. Without his machines with moving parts, we might not have modern-day robots.
Today, it is still possible to see what al-Jazari's elephant clock looked like. A full-size working model is in Dubai's Ibn Battuta Mall. There, every half hour, al-Jazari's most amazing invention comes to life once again.
How Does the Elephant Clock Work?
A bowl with a small hole floats(浮) in a water tank(水箱) inside the elephant's body. As the bowl slowly sinks(下沉),it pulls a rope that moves a human figure. His moving pen shows the number of minutes past the hour.
Every half hour, the water bowl becomes full and sinks completely. This causes a ball to fall from the top of the clock. The movement of the ball causes a phoenix to move and make a sound.
The ball then drops out of a falcon's mouth into the mouth of a Chinese dragon. The weight of the ball causes the dragon's head to move down, and the dragon's tail pulls the water bowl back up.
Finally, the ball drops out of the dragon's mouth and into a vase. As the ball lands in the vase, the elephant driver moves and makes a sound. The cycle begins again until there are no more balls on the top of the clock.
30. Why is al-Jazari called "the father of modern-day engineering"?

When she was alone, Mary felt lonelier than ever. She went out of the house and ran around the garden ten times. Ben Weatherstaff was working in it.
"Spring is coming," he said to Mary. "I can smell it in the air. Soon there will be spring flowers."
At this moment, the robin flew toward them and landed at Mary's feet.
"He remembers me," she said.
"He knows everything that happens here," Ben said. "Only he knows what's happening in the garden that has no door into it. No one else has been inside it for ten years."
Ben walked away to continue his work. Mary bent down and began talking to the robin. She felt happier than she had ever felt. The robin trusted her and did not fly away. It began pecking at the ground, looking for a worm to eat. Mary looked closely at the ground. She saw something that looked like metal. She picked it up. It was dirty and rusty. She cleaned it and saw that it was a key.
"It's been in the ground for many years," she thought. "I wonder if it is the key to the garden. If it is, then I must find the door."
Mary skipped around the garden. The robin followed her. Mary stopped skipping and spoke to the robin.
"He showed me where to find the key," she thought. "Can you show me where the door is?"
The robin sat on the top of the garden wall. It began to sing. The wall was covered with ivy. Mary pulled at a piece of the ivy. It came away from the wall. Behind the wall was a door. A snow maze(迷宫)in Western Canada has broken the record for the world's biggest. According to Guinness World Records, the huge2,789.11 square meters of maze beats the previous Canadian record holder at Fort William Historical Park in Thunder Bay.
For years, farmers Clint Masse and Angie Masse would be busy building a corn maze on their farm just outside of the small town of St Adolphe. Knowing there would be a long, cold winter in Canada, they decided to make a big snow maze instead.
But it was not an easy thing, Clint Masse told AFP. He said building the maze required weeks of planning, tens of thousands of dollars and 370 trucks of snow. "Making snow is really expensive," he said, pointing to the cost of renting generators, tractors and other equipment, fuel and weeks of labor(劳动)。
There were design challenges too. "You're not designing a path. What you are doing is designing walls and every wall has a double duty: it's got a path on this side and a path on that side," Masse said. The couple used computer-aided design software.
Although temperatures dropped to a low of 40 degrees below zero in January, people kept coming in droves. Inside the maze, visitors walked between walls of snow that were 1.8 meters high. "It was fun," one of the visitors Crooks said. "We just kept turning every possible way. It took us a while. We didn't time it; we should have. Maybe half an hour? Yep!" If cold temperatures hold, the maze could stay open for a few more weeks, and Clint Masse said he hoped to have more than 10,000 visitors.
