Most of us are used to using the jet hand dryers(喷气式干手器) in public restrooms. They’re surely very convenient — all we need to do is to hold up our hands for a few seconds until they’re dry. And more importantly, they’re supposed to be hygienic. However, a new study published in the Journal of Hospital Infection found that jet hand dryers actually spread more dangerous bacteria than paper towels.
In the study, two restrooms in each of three different hospitals in the UK, France and Italy were required to provide both jet hand dryers or the paper towels for people to use. But on certain days, only either the hand dryer or the paper towel dispenser(自动出纸机) was available to use.
The scientists found that when only the hand dryer was available, the amount of bacteria(细菌) in the restrooms was 27 times higher than on other days. According to the study leader Mark Wilcox, an expert in medical microbiology at Leeds University, UK, hand dryers spread harmful bacteria all over the room. This means that if people use these dryers, they’re more likely to pick up bacteria.
At the same time, however, this raises the question of why these bacteria exist in the first place if people are washing their hands after using the restroom.
“The problems starts because some people do not wash their hands properly,” Wilcox said. In other words, poor hand-washing leads to a large amount of bacteria being left on your hands.
26. What does the underlined word “hygienic” mean in Paragraph1?
A. 方便的 B. 无菌的 C. 卫生的
27. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. Why scientists studied hand dryers.
B. How scientists prepared for their study.
C. How scientists carried out the experiment.
28. It was found that the restrooms had more bacteria when _______.
A. only the hand dryer was available to use
B. only paper towels were available to use
C. both the hand dryer and the paper towel dispenser were available to use
29. According to the last paragraph, how can we stop bacteria?
A. By washing our hands properly.
B. By not using the hand dryer.
C. By using paper towels.
30. What do we know from the passage?
A. Scientists will find a way to improve hand dryers.
B. Good habits can protect you from danger.
C. It’s common to pick up bacteria in public places.
D
No one wants to work at a messy desk and look lazy. But does a messy desktop actually mean that? Not all disorders(无序) mean you mess everything up. Even Steve Jobs thought his personal attraction came from his messy desktop.
People who prefer a messy desk have their own ideas. Some think it makes them comfortable. Some believe it helps them focus more easily. Messy tables can make it easier to focus on the tasks, just like some novelists can write patiently in a noisy café. Others may be the people who want to do things perfectly. For those who strive for perfection, tasks are either 100% or 0% done. So they usually put away the less important things and do the most important ones perfectly, which leads to paper mountains on the desktop.
Many people are described as untidy, careless and slow because of messy tabletops. However, when we see the desks of Albert Einstein, Mark Twain and Mark Zuckerberg — pioneers of their times — things might change. Clearly, the world welcomes uniformity(一致) and order, it also never refuses regular(有规律的) disorder, which seems like a mess but goes in an organized(有条理的) way.
Research shows that people working with a messy desktop are probably more creative and like to take risks. But people with a tidy one often follow the rules and may not like to try new things. For example, in an experiment(实验) done by Kathleen Vohs, people in the messy group came up with more interesting and creative ideas about the new uses of ping-pong balls than the organized one. Vohs says, “Messy environments seem to inspire people to think up fresh ideas.”
But a messy desk might not be the best choice all the time. When you need new ideas, a messy desk might be a good choice; but when you want to do a task quickly and successfully, it seems better to make a desk clean and tidy.
31. Some people prefer a messy desk because _______.
A. it makes them uncomfortable
B. they can focus on tasks easily
C. they are lazy and untidy
32. What does the underlined phrase “strive for” mean in Chinese?
A. 对……感兴趣 B. 将……分开 C. 为……努力
33. What can you learn from Paragraph 3?
A. Disorder is never welcomed in this world.
B. People may be successful although they have messy tabletops.
C. People can finish the tasks perfectly as long as they keep their desks clean.
34. The experiment done by Kathleen Vohs shows that _______.
A. people working a messy desktop think up fresh ideas more often.
B. people working with a tidy desktop always try new things.
C. a messy desktop has a bad influence on people’s minds.
35. What can be the best title for the passage?
A. Messy Desk: Do people Need to Change It?
B. Messy Desk: Does It Make People Comfortable?
C. Messy desk: Do People Get Used to It?

阅读下面的短文,根据短文内容回答问题。
Believe it or not, soaps change lives in Cambodia(柬埔寨). A group named Eco-Soap Bank collects used soap from hotels and turns it into new bars(块) to give out for free.
Samir Lakhani, an American student, started this project about eight years ago. In 2014, he visited Cambodia for the first time, which is in Southeast Asia. There he watched a mother bathe her baby using detergent(洗涤剂). He learned that many people in Cambodia are very poor and don’t have soap. He wanted to help solve the problem.
Samir’s idea was to recycle(回收利用) old soap. Each year, millions of tourists visit Cambodia. Many hotels use large amounts of soap. A hotel can produce about 68 kilograms of soap waste every month. So Samir went from hotel to hotel, asking them for used soap.
His project grew. It later became the Eco-Soap Bank. The group takes used soap to recycling places. There, the soap is cleaned, then cut up, mixed together and put through a press. Soap waste becomes new bars or liquid(液体) soap. Then they are given out to local schools and some charities(慈善事业). Eco-Soap Bank gives soap to Cambodians. Some bars are also given to local women to sell. They make money for their families. The project has helped half a million Cambodians get cleaner. But Samir has a bigger plan. He wants to start Eco-Soap Bank in every tourist area around the world because he wants to help people take their health into their own hands — one bar of soap at a time.
Nowadays Eco-Soap Bank operates in 12 countries and has recycled 700 tons of soap into over 9 million bars. The women who participate in Eco-Soap Bank programs receive free education and job training support to enable them to succeed. Samir received a CNN Heroes Award for Eco-Soap Bank in 2017 and a Unilever Young Entrepreneurs Award in 2018. He also recently gave a TEDx Talk. He said he hoped everyone in the world can be healthy from the little bars.
41. What did Samir learn while visiting Cambodia?
42. How did he get the used soap?
43. Why does Samir want to start Eco-Soap Bank in every tourist area around the world?
44. Does Eco-Soap Bank give soap to local schools or supermarkets?
45. What do you think of Eco-Soap Bank project?

Dear Liu Yu,
I'm happy to receive your letter. I am worried about you, after knowing that your parents don't support your basketball training. It's normal to for them to stop you from training. After all, your schoolwork is really important and it is your duty to enter a good university. However, I have nothing against your training.
I hold the view that teenagers should be allowed to make their own decisions. First of all, hobbies will not get in the way of schoolwork. Instead, they can make us full of courage and energy. What's more, we are serious enough to be responsible for ourselves.
In the meanwhile, I hope you can have proper communication with your parents to express your opinions, so that they can consider your feelings seriously. Besides, there is no doubt that you are supposed to balance your training and schoolwork. Only then will you solve your problems. Hope things work out and everything will be better!
Yours,
Li Hua
