(2022·全国·九年级专题练习)Do you know the word migrate? It is a word usually used to talk about certain animals such as birds, fish and so on. When animals migrate, they travel a long way from one part of the world to another according to the season. For example, swallows (燕子) migrate south in winter. Many animals migrate—they do this often at the same time and to the same place each year. They move to places where conditions are better—where the weather is warmer, where there is more food and water, or where their young will be safer.
People also migrate. When people migrate, they go to live in another area or country, especially in order to find work. In English, when people leave their home country in order to live in another country, we use the word emigrate instead of migrate. From migrate and emigrate come the words migration and emigration. However, if people move from their home country to another to live there forever (永久地), the word changes from emigrate to immigrate in the English language. Then the word immigration is born.
Isn’t word-making of the English language interesting? And can this process (过程) of finding out the relationships between words and learning them in a group or groups be a way for you to learn the language?
Based on Longman Dictionary of Contemporary English, 6th edition.

D.Monarch butterflies in North America fly south to stay away from the cold.
7.According to the passage, if people ________ , they leave their home country to live in another forever.

8.The passage is written to ________.
A.introduce migration of animals B.tell readers a way of learning English
C.show how English words change D.explain why people migrate
(2022·广西·靖西市教学研究室一模)I often hear some students say English is difficult, and it gives them a headache. So they can’t learn it well. But English is very easy for me. I’m very glad to tell you something about how I study English.
First, I think an interest in English is very important. When I was in Grade One, we had a new subject-English. It was fresh to me. I became interested in it, so I worked hard at it. Soon we had an English exam and I got a very good mark. How happy I was! Since then, I have been learning English harder and harder. Our English teacher often taught us English songs, and the songs sounded nice. I often think how interesting English is!
Second, English is another language different from our Chinese. We should learn it in the following ways: Listen to the teacher carefully in class, speak bravely, read aloud and have a larger and larger vocabulary, and then practice again and again. And I have a good habit: whenever I have a question, I must make it clear by asking our English teacher. How happy I am when I understand it!
Besides, I often read English stories, jokes and easy novels. From these I know English is not only interesting, but also useful. They help me understand a lot of things. So, to do more reading is an important way to learn English well.
Now I have learned English for more than two years. I am always in the first place in our class. Of course, I hope every classmate of mine can learn English well, too.

If life can be compared to a meal, I think the mistakes are like salt and the success is a candy.
“Hey, ” said the boy whose name I couldn’t remember, sitting next to me. “Don’t worry. Take your time.” And so I did. But I still couldn’t correctly pronounce my Chinese name that was given by the teacher. I was so embarrassed on my first day of learning Chinese. I was so worried that I didn’t sleep well that night. I couldn’t stop thinking what would happen in my Chinese class in the following days.
I took Chinese classes during my summer vacation. Every morning I walked for 25 minutes to the class while having a Chinese pancake from one of the breakfast carts(推车)on the way. Learning Spanish in school was a cushy job for me, because I could speak French and Italian which helped me with it. However, learning Chinese was difficult at first. As a boy who was born in America and grew up in America, I knew nothing about the language and had no experience of learning the language. I chose it mainly because my goal was to work and teach home and abroad. It is necessary for me to master different languages.
As the classes went on, I slowly found that I was making connections. My 10 years of playing the piano has allowed me to perform for others. My several years of writing has led me to become a school reporter. I knew that my Chinese classes would allow me to speak Chinese well. As the teachers helped me build up the confidence, I soon began tasting the sweetness.
So what did my summer really taste like? It tasted like the Chinese food that, for the first time, I did not order in English, my mother language.

A.Because he didn’t remember his friend’s name.
B.Because he couldn’t write his Chinese name.
C.Because he had poor Chinese pronunciation.
15.The underlined word “cushy” in Paragraph 3 most probably means ________.
A.difficult B.easy C.meaningful
16.Why did the writer learn Chinese?
A.Because Chinese is one of his school necessary subjects.
B.Because he wanted to teach and work internationally.
C.Because he was interested in all kinds of Chinese food.
17.What do we know about the writer according to the passage?
A.He is good at playing the piano.
B.He can speak two languages.
C.He is interested in writing and painting.
18.What does this passage mainly talk about?
A.An American girl who loves China.
B.How to learn Chinese well.
C.A sweet experience of learning Chinese.
(2022·全国·九年级专题练习)Did you know that vocabulary (词汇) is more important than grammar? If you have good vocabulary, you can communicate successfully, even if the grammar is not completely perfect.
However, one common problem is learning new words and then forgetting them. So when you want to use a new word in a conversation, you can’t remember it at that moment. Does this often happen to you? The reason for this difficulty is that most students try to learn vocabulary by studying lists and dictionaries and remembering the words. But it may not work if you don’t have a very good memory.
The best way to learn vocabulary and remember the words successfully, is to learn new words and use them at once. You can do this with a very simple exercise. Every time you learn a new word, for example, from an English lesson or an article, write it down in your vocabulary notebook. Writing is more active than just reading a definition (释义). You should write the word, the definition in English or translation, one example sentence from the article or dictionary and one example sentence that you create.
Imagine you just learn the word “generous”, write in your vocabulary notebook: generous (adjective), definition—giving or willing to give freely. Example one, from the article: Thanks for paying for my dinner, you’re very generous. Example two, my example: My brother is generous because he volunteers at the animal shelter on weekends. It’s best if your example sentences are true to your life, because this creates a personal connection with the new word. The next day, read your vocabulary notebook again and try to add one more example sentence using the new word. It’s helpful for you to remember it. These two simple steps—writing the word and using it at once—help you remember and use new words.
Do you have a vocabulary notebook? If not, start now.
19.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The problem. B.The new word. C.The conversation. D.The dictionary.
20.What’s the correct order of the following steps of taking vocabulary notes?
①Make your own example sentence.
②Write the word, its English definition or translation.
③Copy an example sentence from the article or dictionary.
④Read your notebook again and add one more example sentence.
A.②③①④ B.②③④① C.③④②① D.③②①④
21.How can we make the best example sentences according to the writer?
A.By asking for help from friends. B.By explaining words’ definitions.
C.By connecting them with our life. D.By adding words from the article.
22.What’s the best title for the passage?
A.Tips for Translating Words B.Advice on Using Grammar
C.Abilities of Creating Examples D.Ways of Learning New Words
(2022·全国·九年级专题练习)
A tree has roots. People have roots too. If you get to the root of a problem, you will solve it. It’s the same thing with words. Dig deeply into a big, unfamiliar word and you will understand where it came from.
As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives (侦探) looking for information to unlock the unknown. Like any good detective arriving on the crime scene, the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.
As you know, prefixes (前缀) and suffixes (后缀) can be added to the beginning or end of words to change the meaning. Know them, and you will have the word building power. But root words are the key. Take time to learn a few of these, put them in your memory, and you will become a master word detective.
Let’s look at one common root word used in English. “Alter” from the Latin word means “other”. When you meet this root word, you know that the bigger word has something to do with “other”. Examine the word “alternate”. Can you find the Latin root in it?
·If you and your friend like to eat out, first you pay and the other pays the next time. You are alternating paying.
·If you go to the movies on alternate Saturdays, you go on one Saturday, but not the other Saturday.
·If you have no alternative, you have no other choice.
Learn as many root words as possible in the language you are studying. Then use your “rooting for words” skills. Like any new skill, practice and hard work are always paid back.
23.What does the underlined word “it” in paragraph 2 refer to?
A.The situation. B.The crime scene.
C.A new and difficult word. D.Everything that is known.
24.If Jim and Lily go to the movies, which one below is “alternating paying”?
A.They each pay half. B.Jim pays every time.
C.They take turns paying. D.Their parents pay for them.
25.How does the author explain his ideas about root words?
A.By giving a fact. B.By taking an example.
C.By telling a story. D.By having a discussion.
26.“Sen” from the Latin word means “old”. Which word uses this Latin root?
A.My brother is my senior by two years. B.He was ill so he was absent from school.
C.A criminal was sentenced to death by law. D.60 students were present at the sports meeting.
27.Which of the following shows the structure (结构) of the passage?
(①=paragraph 1 ②=paragraph 2,…)
A. B. C. D.

(2022·河南·洛阳市第五十五中学一模)We all know that a lot of people — and I mean a lot of people — learn another language and get really good at it. I’m not including bilingual people whose parents speak different languages to them from when they’re born. (They’re lucky — they don’t even have to try, right?) No, I mean people who learn at school or even later and then get so good at their second language that they become famous for it.
Here’s an example: a Polish man called Joseph Conrad. Well, his “real” name was Józef Teodor Konrad Korzeniowski and he was born in 1857. When he was in his twenties, he became a sailor and started to learn English. Then he went to live in England. He stayed there for the rest of his life and he always spoke English with an accent. So what? Well, he changed his name to Joseph Conrad and he wrote novels in English. He wrote about twenty novels that a lot of people think are some of the greatest novels in English.
Another example? OK. Børge Rosenbaum was born in Denmark in 1909. He was a very good pianist — he gave his first concert when he was just eight years old. Later, he started to tell jokes when he played the piano and he became a piano-playing comedian — in Danish, of course. Then when the Second World War started, he managed to run from Denmark and he went to the USA.He was 31, he had only $20 in his pocket and he spoke no English at all. So, to learn English, he watched films and went to watch American comedians. Then he changed his name to Victor Borge, started doing his own comedy acts and became a famous TV comedian — telling jokes in his second language!
Then perhaps you can add the Swedish group ABBA, who became very famous for writing and singing songs in English. There must be others, but I don’t know any more. Do you?
