Who is smarter? A human being or artificial intelligence (人工智能)?
The question was asked around the world when a computer program called AlphaGo beat the world top Go(围棋)player, South Korean Lee Se-del, 4—1. In fact, before the match, most people believed that Lee would certainly be the winner because they didn’t think that AI was good enough to be better than the human mind. However, as a machine, AlphaGo would never get tired, while Lee Se-del was only a human and humans must have some weaknesses.
So, what comes next?
Some people have been thinking that artificial intelligence, or AI in short, will be a bad thing for humans. In an interview with the BBC in 2014, the UK scientist Stephen Hawking showed his opinion that development of full artificial intelligence could mean the end of the human beings.
So, are we really about to live in the world controlled by AI or robots?
Not quite. After all, it’s not hard to get a computer program to remember and produce facts. What is hard is getting computers to use their knowledge in everyday fields(领域).
“We think that, for the human being, things like seeing and moving, are natural and common in our life.” Thomas Johnson, founder of Motion Figures, a company that is bringing AI to toys, told the newspaper. “But for a robot, to walk up and down just like human beings needs a great number of things to be done every second, and it’s really difficult to do. We have a long way to go before AI can truly begin to be like the human brain , even though the technology can be great.”
But, who believes much has to be done to improve AI?
John Markoff of The New York Times said that researchers should build artificial intelligence to improve people’s life. “Our fate is in our own hands,” he wrote. “Since technology depends on the ideas of its creators, we can choose to use technology to improve the world.”
39. The match between AlphaGo and Lee Se-del is mentioned at the beginning of the article mainly to ________.
A. show how AI is usually tested
B. get the readers to think about AI
C. draw the readers’ attention to AlphaGo
D. tell the readers AI has been over the human brain
40. Most people believed Lee would be the winner because they thought that ________.
