Harbin invites visitors to frozen world
Winter is approaching! Come to the Harbin in the northeast of China and enjoy the Ice-Snow World! Here you can appreciate illuminated ice at night, and check out snow in the daytime. This is a good place to toss water and watch it turn into ice instantly. Find a safe place with no one nearby, and enjoy the unique sight. Moreover, in winter, the Songhua River turns into “thousands of miles of ice” and becomes a natural ice-skating rink. The frozen river offers opportunities for many different winter activities. Shennongjia’s real beauty is more than just a myth
Shennongjia is said to be the place where the Emperor Yan once lived and impresses visitors with its vibrant ecology, rich biodiversity and the natural beauty of karst landforms. There are waterfalls, pools and a 17-meter-high arch “bridge” crafted by nature after years of rain erosion. You can hike in a forest, climb a mountain and explore a large, dark cave to listen to the sounds of swallows nestling. Some visitors hope that they may even encounter the legendary yeren (“wild man”) here in Shenlongjia. The booking line is 07196548542 or send a email to www.shenlongjiabooking.com.
Liu Chi Xiang—Narrow Alley, Broad Minds

In the Qing Dynasty , Minister Zhang Ying received a letter asking for his final judgement on a dispute between two families’ house boundary about a wall. Zhang wrote a poem back saying, “Looking at the ten thousand mile-long Great Wall. Long gone is its builder Emperor Qinshihuang.” Eventually, both families decided to move their wall about one meter back, which created the “alley” between the houses.

Natalie Doan, 14, has always felt lucky to live in Rockaway, New York. Living near the beach, Natalie can see the ocean and hear the wave from her house. “It’s the ocean that makes Rockaway so special,” she says.
On October 29, 2012, that ocean turned fierce. That night, Hurricane Sandy attacked the East Coast, and Rockaway was hit especially hard. Fortunately, Natalie’s family escaped to Brooklyn shortly before the city’s bridge closed.
When they returned to Rockaway the next day, they found their neighborhood in ruins. Many of Natalie’s friends had lost their homes and were living far away. The topic “EDG wins” had been viewed more than 2.63 billion times as of press on Sina Weibo, ranking the top trending topic for a long time.
With the popularity of digital technology, new forms of cultural exchanges have been appearing, of which e-sports are the most popular. More importantly, the e-sports industry is sustainable in spreading Chinese culture, as the large audiences mean huge commercial potential. In 2020 alone, the sales revenue of the domestic e-sports industry exceeded 278.69 billion yuan, and involved 280,000 enterprises, which in turn created over 10 million jobs. How could we possibly think that keeping animals in cages in unnatural environments—mostly for entertainment purposes—is fair and respectful? Zoo officials say they are concerned about animals. However, Most zoos remain “collection” of interesting “things” rather than protective habitats .
Zoos teach people that it is acceptable to keep animals bored, lonely, and far from their natural homes. Zoos claim to educate people and save endangered species, but visitors leave zoos learning nothing meaningful about the animals’ natural behavior, intelligence, or beauty. Zoos keep animals in small spaces or cages, and most signs only mention the species’ name, diet, and natural range.
The animals’ normal behavior is seldom noticed because zoos don’t usually take care of the animals’ natural needs. The animals are kept together in small spaces, with no privacy and little opportunity for mental and physical exercise. This results in unusual and self-destructive behavior called zoochosis. A world-wide study of zoos found that zoochosis is common among animals kept in small spaces or cages. Another study showed that elephants spend 22 percent of their time making repeated head movements or biting cage bars, and bears spend 30 percent of their time walking back and forth, a sign of unhappiness and pain.
Furthermore, most animals in zoos are not endangered. Captive breeding (圈养繁殖) of endangered big cats, Asian elephants, and other species has not resulted in their being sent back to the wild. Zoos talk a lot about their captive breeding programs because they do not want people to worry about a species (物种) dying out. In fact, baby animals also attract a lot of paying customers. Haven’t we seen enough competitions to name baby animals?
Actually, we will save endangered species only if we save their habitats and put an end to the reasons people kill them. Instead of supporting zoos, we should support groups that work to protect animals’ natural habitats.
    32. According to the author’s description, the animals’ life in zoos is .
    A. unhappy B. dangerous C. meaningful D. competitive
    33. From the passage, we know that animals in the state of zoochosis.
    A. remain active as usual B. often attack other animals
    C. behave strangely D. enjoy walking around
    34. The author tries to persuade readers to accept his argument mainly by .
    A. giving examples of animals in the wild B. pointing out the faults in what zoos do
    C. questioning the way animals live D. discussing the advantages of natural habitats
    35. The author try to convey that in the passage.
    A. zoos fail in their attempt to save habitats
    B. zoos are not worth the public support
    C. zoos should treat animals as human beings
    D. zoos use animals as a means of entertainment

    How to Motivate Teens
Motivating teenagers is no easy task. In fact, it has been a question for parents for ages. 36 .
Remain positive at least 70 percent of the time when dealing with teenagers. Young teenagers will always act negatively to the naggings(好唠叨的人). Every time a teenager is pushed and nagged, they will pull further back. So, instead of screaming “clean that room”, try something along the lines of “I would appreciate it if you cleaned the room”. It would really help me out today.
Talk to them often and keep open a line of communication. By doing this the teenagers will not feel like a prisoner, but more like a partner. 37 .
Appreciating what they have done, instead of focusing on what they have not done. When a job is done in their minds, avoid immediately saying “you left A undone and B was done poorly”. 38 . Then suggest that the job is almost done, but a few things need changed.
Keep in mind that teenagers are still kids. Don’t make them a house servant. A housework list is fine. 39 . Make sure you allow them to have at least the same amount of free time as the parents.
40 . Although the results may not come for another 10 years, teenagers learn from the actions of their parents. By working hard, staying positive and putting family first, it is extremely likely that your teenager will become a responsible person.
    A. Set a good example
    B. Point out what was done right
    C. Encourage and support your teen
    D. Talk to your teenager about your expectations for him
    E. However, they still need their own spare time to be a kid
    F. However, with some work there are ways to motivate teenagers
    G. This is necessary for teenagers as they are fighting for independence

    An Unforgivable Mistake
A few years ago, the company I work for sent my wife and me to live in New York for a year. I’ve always loved jogging, so I was really happy when I found out the apartment they had rented for us was next to Central Park. This meant that every morning I could go for a run before I went to work.
Because a lot of people had told me to be careful of muggers in the park, I didn’t usually take anything with me. How could they rob me if I didn’t have anything? But this one morning my wife asked me to buy some bread on the way home, so I put a $ 10 bill in my back pocket.
It was a beautiful morning and the park was quiet with very few people walking or jogging around. While I was running, another jogger bumped into me. He apologized and continued running. For a while, I didn’t think too much of it. However, when I noticed the wide path where I was running, I thought it was kind of strange. The warning of muggers in the park occurred to me. "It could have been a mugger!” I suddenly became alarmed, so I checked my pocket. The money was missing! I immediately started to run after the other jogger. I finally caught up and grabbed him firmly by the arm. I started shouting and demanding that he gave me the$10 bill. I’m not usually a hot-headed person, but I really lost my temper at that moment. I couldn’t believe the robbery was actually happening to me. Filled with anger, I shook my fist at him. This seemed to frighten him. He quickly put his hand in his pocket and gave me the money. Then he ran away as fast as he could.
I bought the bread and went home. As soon as I got home, I couldn’t wait to tell my wife the story. “You won’t believe what happened to me,” I started with pride. She immediately interrupted(插话).” I know, you left the money for the bread on the kitchen table.

    【范文】
    Dear Jack,
Delighted to hear that you are going to take a trip to China this July, I’d like to express my sincere welcome to you.
As I know, you are always interested in Chinese culture and want to learn some Chinese. Therefore, I suggest that you choose Chinese daily dialogues as a start, like greeting people, asking for directions and bargaining for souvenirs, which can help you a lot during your trip. Learning a foreign language needs great effort. Apparently, I’d like to be your teacher and send you an e-book with my teaching schedule later. Besides, Let’s have an online class over the Internet every weekend, through which I will try my best to make your learning easier and help you speak some fluent Chinese before your arrival.
If you have other ideas, please feel free to send me emails.
    Yours,
    Li Hua

    【范文】Possible version
Looking at the money on the table, I stood there, shocked. For the rest of the day, I felt extremely guilty, with the innocent jogger and his “helplessness" on my mind. “How could I be so rude to him without knowing the truth? Why was it that the jogger gave me the money? What if I waited for him to explain?” I still remember his frightened face when I scared him away like a monster. I decided to find a chance to apologize to him. The next morning, I got up and went to the park as usual, but not for jogging. I just hung around where I met that jogger, but in vain. (103 words)
For several days, I waited at the same place. But to my disappointment, he didn't turn up. It was almost a week later before I finally saw him again. I, the “mugger”, gave the $10 bill back to him and said sorry to him again and again. Fortunately, he forgave me for what I had done to him and said, “Oh, it doesn't matter. “Many years have passed, but I can still feel my cheeks burning with shame. From the experience I have learned that it is too early to judge a person before you know the truth. (89 words)

    Text 10分享学习英语的方法
M: Hello! ⑰I’m the winner of the English Contest for college students, Bob. Today I’d like to share my habits of learning English. First, grasp three words for a day. Look up the three words wherever you can. ⑱There’s a thing called wholedic.com, where I often look up the words. Look up the meanings, and then write a sentence using the word. ⑲Besides, use that word more in your English speaking during the day.
Another of the things that I do is I strongly recommend that students find something to read in English every day for at least 15 minutes. And the idea is to read it word for word. And then speak it aloud as you’re reading it. And this is the way that we can develop better grammar and listening comprehension. So I typically read about 40 to 50 articles every day.
Do you know how many words are in English? A million? Yeah. And it’s really because it’s such a worldwide language. Do you need to learn all of them? No. Just learn as many as you can or at least the ones you meet more than once. ⑳In short, the principle is to keep reading and learning. Single method or only a short period is less effective.
