What are they? Is there any life on other planets?
3.Tell students some background information of people’s effort to land on the moon home and abroad. Step 2 Pre-reading Ask students to work in pairs to talk about Shenzhou-9—a man-made spaceship. What do you know about it? Step 3 Fast-reading Read the passage and choose the best title for it. 1.Anyone out there? 2. Life on the earth 3. The sun and other stars 4. The stars at night Answer: 1 Step 4 Careful reading Para 1:Ask students to read and answer the questions. (1) How many years do the scientists think there has been life on the earth? (2) Have we discovered life on other planets? Answers: (1) For hundreds of millions of years. (2) No, we haven’t. Para 2: Ask students to read and match the words with pictures.
Then put the words in the box in order: small—large. Paras 3-4:Ask students to read and complete the table.

It is taller than many other buildings.它比许多其他的建筑物都高。
它们中没有一个有像地球这样的环境。 辨析:no one与none: no one的同义词为 nobody, 只用于指人,其后不跟of短语,作主语时谓语用单数,no one 只能回答who提问的问句。 none用于表示对三者或三者以上全部否定,既可指人,也可指物,常用于短语none of+名词复数/代词,表示 “……中没有一个”。作主语时,谓语可以是单数,也可以是复数; none的反义词是all, none可与of连用; 可以用来回答how many 或 how much提问的问句。 None of us are/is interested in the story.我们没有人对那个故事感兴趣。 None of the students in this class has been to England. 这个班没有一个学生去过英国。 —Who are you speaking to?你在跟谁讲话? —No one. 没人。 —How many students are there in the room?房间里有多少个学生? —None. 一个也没有。 3. ...with so many stars in the universe, are we alone...? ……宇宙中有这么多的恒星,我们是唯一的吗……? 辨析:alone与lonely (1)alone既可作形容词,又可作副词,意为“单独的/地,独自的/地”,没有感情色彩。 She is afraid of going out alone at night.晚上她害怕一个人出去。 (2) lonely形容词,意为“孤独的,寂寞的”,具有感情色彩。 He lived alone after his wife left,so he was very lonely. 他妻子离开后,他一个人生活,所以他很孤独。 Do you feel lonely when you are at home alone? 你自己一个人在家时感到孤独吗?

It is true that scientists have not discovered life on other planets in the 5 yet, but some scientists believe that they will find it some day. Step 8 Writing 1.Let students look at the picture from a science story for children and answer the questions.(A5) — What have the scientists just received? — They’ve just received a message from one of our spaceships. (1) Where has the spaceship landed? (Mars) (2) What has the spaceship discovered? (people on Mars) (3)Why have the people on Mars not sent us a message? (don’t know how to) (4)Why have the people on Mars not visited us on the earth?(don’t know how to) 2. Let students write a passage to describe the picture. Tell them to use their answers to the questions in Activity 5 to help them. We have just received a message from our spaceship to Mars… Possible version: We have just received a message from our spaceship to Mars. Our spaceship has discovered aliens there. They have never sent us a message because they don’t know how to communicate with us. They haven’t visited the earth because they don’t know how to fly to our planet, and they prefer life on Mars. They seem very happy on their planet. They have used parts from the other spacecraft from the earth to make TVs, radios, etc. We hope they don’t do the same with this one! Step 9 Homework 1. Read the passage. 2. Ask students to correct their writing.
