In Chinese literature,Shanshui petry dates frm as early as the 4th century. Surprisingly,“nature” des nt really becme a cmmn theme fr pets in Western cultures until the Rmantic Mvement in the late 18th century. Fr example, the earliest pems in Old English, which were cmpsed in the 7th century AD,are abut war,nt nature. The earliest great nature pems which express a lve fr nature are prbably thse f the English Lake Pets in the early 19th century. Much writing abut nature emerges naturally frm travel writing. In the 17th and 18th centuries wealthy yung peple frm England ften spent several years travelling arund Eurpe—an experience which became knwn as the“Grand Tur”. Magnificent scenes frm nature were described in detail in their letters hme and in their travel jurnals. Nature als makes an appearance in sme famus essays, such as Ralph Wald Emersn’s Nature (《论自然》). Threau’s memir Walden is als famus fr its depictin f nature. Nature has als featured in nvels, smetimes as an enemy f human beings. One f the greatest American nvels,Mby Dick(《白鲸》),is set n the high seas. Tw ppular early 20th-century nvels by the writer Jack Lndn—The Call f the Wild(《野性的呼唤》)and White Fang(《白芳传奇》)—tell their stries frm the pint f view f a dg and a wlf, respectively. In these wrks, nature is cruel, and demands respect frm humans. Tday, nature remains a prminent theme in literature. Its beauty and pwer cntinue t be described in vivid detail. What is new is that writers are mre aware f its vulnerability, and are picking up their pens in a call fr its prtectin.
Listen and read the pem by Emily Dickinsn. Answer the questins.1 What images are used t symblise nature? 2 What message des the pem try t cnvey? 3 What des nature mean t yu?
1 What images are used t symblise nature? 2 What message des the pem try t cnvey? 3 What des nature mean t yu?
Nature is symblised by simple images f animals(“Squirrel”,“theBumble bee”,“The Bblink”,“the Cricket”) and features(“TheHill”,“the Afternn”,“Eclipse”,“ the Sea”,“Thunder”),whichare in turn symblic f the pet’s thughts and feelings abut the simplicity f nature. Nature is als symblised in a metaphrical sense when it is described as“Heaven”and “Harmny”.
The message f the pem is that althugh what we see and hear in nature appears t be simple, within that simplicity lie great beauty, mystery and magnificence that humans cannt truly appreciate r capture in their art.
Nature means a lt t me. Nature wrks hard t prtect us and t sustainur everyday lives—a fact that is ften under-appreciated.
