Sometimes, using hand gestures can bring more information and be more convenient than words, especially when you are speaking to someone with no language in common. But the same gesture can mean something quite nasty and offensive (冒犯的) to a person from a different cultural background.
“V” Shape
In many countries, if you have your index and middle fingers pointed up in the “V” shape. It stands for winning. However, when you make the sign, be sure to have the front of your palm facing outward instead of inward, because showing people the back of your hand is impolite in some countries like the UK and Australia.
Finger Snap (打响指)
Snapping your thumb and middle finger over and over may mean one is trying to remind someone of something forgotten. While, in Latin America, snapping them means asking one to hurry up. But one thing you should remember is that, in many cultures, snapping fingers close to someone’s face is considered to be an offensive gesture.
Fingers Crossed
Crossing the index and middle fingers is regarded as a sign of wishing for good luck or fortune. At other times, people cross their fingers before telling a lie, as it is believed to countervail (抵消) the bad things coming from the lie. So it is both a positive and negative symbol.
ILY sign
I L Y ILY sign
This is always a nice hand gesture from American Sign Language. It combines the letters “I”, “L” and “Y” to mean “I love you.” People use this gesture very often to show their love for their family, friends and all the other people they love.

(2021·重庆一中九年级期中) Chinese cartoon has been a success abroad with Scissor Seven, the first Chinese cartoon to be shown worldwide on Netflix. The show has reached viewers in more than 190 countries, in about 30 languages. Its success may come from its humor, touching stories, amazing visuals and beautiful music.
The cartoon is about an assassin (刺客) called “Wu Liuqi”, also known as “Seven” in English. He works as a hairdresser who is trying to get back his lost memories. The story is about love and forgiveness (宽容). “This is a powerful idea that connects with viewers everywhere. I believe a successful work should express shared values that touch the viewers in different parts of the world.” said Zou, the director of the cartoon.
Zou has also added many local cultural symbols into the cartoon stories, including Chinese-style buildings, Chinese kung fu, folk music, traditional clothing and so on. They help foreign viewers to have a better understanding of China. “We were impressed by the production quality of Scissor Seven, as well as its special storytelling style, which we believe will be loved by our cartoon fans around the world.” says the director of Netflix.
However, there were many challenges. According to Zou, the show is a comedy, but some humor is based on the Chinese language and so may get lost in translation. This required their team to make some adjustments so that more people could understand the jokes.
Chinese cartoons like Nezha and Scissor Seven have attracted international attention in recent years. However, Zou pointed out that China’s cartoons still have challenges to deal with. “The popularity of Scissor Seven on Netflix marks an important step for our global business. (2021·四川·雅安中学九年级期中) Going to a friend’s house is very exciting. You may spend time with a friend and get to see where he or she lives. So remember to be polite.
The first thing to remember is that when a friend invites you over, you need to arrive on time. If your friend tells you to come “around 3:00”, that means you can arrive a little bit after 3:00. But usually it is a good idea to arrive at the right time.
Often it is also nice to bring something to your friend’s house. This could be a box of chocolates for you to share, or maybe a CD that you can enjoy together. You can also bring some flowers. A little gift is a nice way to show your friend that you are excited to be at his or her house.
When you visit your friend’s house, you may also meet his or her parents. You should tell them who you are and they may tell you their names. As a child, I went to visit my friend Paul. I called his parents by their first names John and Mary. But now I know it is more polite to call them Mr. And Mrs. Smith. This will show them more respect(尊重) and then they may tell you to call them by their first names. Another way to show respect is to call them Madam or Sir. It is a cool thing to visit a friend’s house. Be polite to your friend and your friend’s parents, and you will be invited again.

(2021·北京市顺义区仁和中学九年级期中)A Kid Hero
“If you could have any three things, what would you want?”
Eleven-year-old Ruby Chitsey loves asking that question, but it’s not a game she plays. She asks the seniors (老年人) at nursing homes in Arkansas where she lives. Even more amazing, she then sets out to make their wishes come true.
Ruby has long been close to the elders. Her mother has worked in nursing homes for many years. Ruby often stays with her in summer and asks the seniors if they need anything.
Last May, Ruby noticed an old lady named Pearl staring (凝视) out a window. She seemed sad. “What are you looking at?” Ruby asked. Pearl said she was watching her dog being led away by his new owner. Ruby asked around and discovered that the nursing home didn’t allow the seniors to have dogs and Pearl couldn’t afford to pay anyone to look after her dog. Ruby also heard many stories about Pearl’s friends there and found that they were unable to afford life costs. That was when she decided to do something about it.
She started by asking the seniors what three things they wanted most in the world. Her mother worried that people would ask for cars and other things that an 11-year-old wouldn’t be able to provide. Instead, they asked for chocolate, fries, and even just pants that fit properly.
“I felt really upset,” Ruby says. “We left the nursing home that day and went straight to a store and bought as many things as we could.”
Using their own money, Ruby and her mother helped about 100 people in three months. Then, they started asking for donations (捐款). The good people in Arkansas strongly supported them, so Ruby and her mother set up a GoFundMe page—Three Wishes for Ruby’s Residents. After GoFundMe named Ruby a Kid Hero and spread her story internationally, Three Wishes raised more than $250,000 in five months. One of Ruby’s new goals is to set up a shared computer in one nursing home in each state.
Ruby doesn’t plan to stop there. “I consider kindness to be my hobby,” she says, “and I’m very good at it.”
14.What did Ruby do for the seniors at nursing homes in Arkansas?
A.She offered to look after their dogs.

(2021·北京市顺义区仁和中学九年级期中)What Is Success
The Oxford English Dictionary defines(定义) the word success as “the fact that you have achieved something that you want and have been trying to do or get; the fact of becoming rich or famous or of getting a high social position”. Some rankings(排行榜) put Albert Einstein, Michael Jackson, Bill Gates and Steve Jobs as among the most successful people in the world. What Michael Jackson did for music is the same as what Albert Einstein did for physics. All of them do have greatly influenced the industries or media to which they belonged. J.K.Rowling, the author of the famous Harry Potter novels. She created a magical world that sold more than 500 million books and became hit movies. With an estimated(估算的) net worth of $650 million in 2017, she certainly goes for the dictionary definition of success, but for her it didn’t come easy. Having no job, raising her child alone, she was refused by publishers about a dozen times before one took a chance on her. This is what people love: the rags-to-riches success story.
In comparison with Rowling, the Dutch artist Vincent van Gogh practically suffered a lot in life to make ends meet. When he was alive, he only sold one painting even though he created more than 2,000 works of art. Van Gogh died when he was 37 years old and with very little money to his name. However, in 1990, his painting Portrait of Dr. Gachet sold for $82.5 million, which has a value today of around $137 million. So, the question is: Is Van Gogh considered successful even though he died poor?
Besides the dictionary definitions, different people have competing ideas of what success really means. Often times the most agree on the same characteristics that make a person a success. A financial magazine named Inc. points to the following qualities that make a person successful: Drive, Confidence, Patience, Honesty, Passion...
Success isn’t always about getting a lot of money or fans, even though those are the stories we see most often. There are other people who we may not know well, but who have achieved success in their own right. One perfect example is mothers. They spent days, months, and years teaching their children from birth to young adulthood. If a child grows up to be a kind, helpful, thoughtful and considerate adult, can the mother consider herself a success?
Perhaps success really is subjective, and it’s up to people to define it for themselves. However, one thing seems to be in complete agreement when we search for the definition and can be best summed up by Steve Jobs, who said, “If you really look closely, most overnight successes took a long time.”
17.The word “rags-to-riches” in Paragraph 1 probably means “ _________”.
A.winning success from luck B.turning talent into treasure
C.gaining money from honor D.rising from poorness to wealth
18.The writer mentions Vincent van Gogh to show that _________ .
A.success is through loneliness
B.success is beyond time and space
C.success is to take the life-changing opportunity
D.success is to achieve something you want and try
19.What can we learn from the passage?
A.Most successes happen overnight if we look closely.
B.What makes people successful is the strong mind and body.
C.A child growing to be a gentle adult can be the mother’s success.
D.Albert Einstein makes greater achievement than Michael Jackson.
20.The writer probably agrees that people should _________ .
A.reorder the rankings of the world’s most successful people
B.reach an agreement of what makes a person success
C.recognize and appreciate different kinds of success
D.drive themselves to set great goals for success

(2021·广东·新丰县教育局教研室九年级期中) A scientist named Charles had a strange idea. He wanted to invent a new kind of car which could go without a driver. It could also be used as a living room. That means you can go anywhere on your sofa in the car. You might say that it’s impossible. But Charles succeeded in making it in a factory and named it Tridika.
Tridika has no wheels and it starts working when it reaches the magnetic levitation tracks(磁悬浮轨道). It takes its energy from its tracks. And it works in the same ways as a magnetic train. It moves very fast. As everyone knows, cities are developing rapidly. There are more and more cars running on the road. So parking space is limited. Sometimes it’s hard to find a place to park(停车). Tridika can solve this problem easily because it needn’t park on the ground. Actually, it can park on the outside wall of the building with the help of an elevator system(电梯系统). In this way, much parking space can be saved. When Tridika parks itself in front of your apartment, you can get into your room directly. Of course, there must be a side door in the outside wall. Then Tridika becomes another living room. It’s really amazing, isn’t it?

(2021·广东·岭南画派纪念中学九年级期中)Would you fly off to the red planet? Recently Holland put a plan called “Going to Mars”. They planned to send four astronauts to the Mars in 2023. The astronauts who are chosen will spend their rest life on the Mars. It is said that more than 1000 people have applied for the position, including 450 Chinese. What’s your opinion? Would you like to go there without your family, your friends and stay there for the whole life? Here are the opinions of some students.
Students
Opinions on the plan “Going to Mars”
Hao Xingchen
I wouldn’t take it. It is very dangerous to travel by spaceship. I am not ready for that. Also, I have been living on the Earth for more than 14 years. The Earth is like my mother who gives me everything in life. I don’t want to leave her behind.
Yu Cong
I’ve always been curious about space. If I could travel to Mars, I’d like to be the first to go there. It would be great honor if I could do something helpful for the whole mankind.
Yang Yanwen
I think this idea is great! But I wouldn’t do it, because I don’t think our technology is advanced enough yet. If they did this project under such situation, it would be quite dangerous. Maybe I would go if I had been well trained and technology was more highly developed.
Liu Jiakun
I wouldn’t go to Mars. I’ve heard that the temperature there is freezing at night. The atmosphere is very thin and there is very little oxygen. Even if we can arrive there safely, we may not be able to get used to the environment there.
Wei Yi
Going to Mars would certainly be very challenging. I want to have a try. In this way I will explore space and come closer to the galaxy(银河系). I heard that there are aliens on Mars. I want to know whether it is true.

(2021·广东·岭南画派纪念中学九年级期中) When I was told to play for a drama competition, I became nervous. I had never done anything like this before. But after reading Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, I was excited about what was to come. The story was great and the sentences were so funny. I wanted to give it a go.
I was playing Sir Toby Belch, a very funny old knight(骑士). I had to remember a lot of sentences and very funny old words. I worked hard in order to act well, like a real knight from the old days. But the most difficult job was to be funny in all my acting. This is quite different from the way I am in real life.
“OK. It’s time to be a different me now!” I said to myself. At first, I couldn’t do anything naturally. I don’t know what to do when acting in this silly way. But I always told myself that I was Sir Toby now and I should forget who I really was. Even when I was in the bath, I was thinking about Sir Toby’s words and actions and trying to do everything like Sir Toby did.
The competition day finally came. When it was my turn to perform, I took a deep breath and began my part. I tried hard to make my words clear enough to understood and my actions funny enough to make everybody laugh. When the results were finally read out, I immediately knew we had won the first prize. (2021·广东·岭南画派纪念中学九年级期中) Experts believe that there are more than 8 million restaurants in the world today. So it might surprise you to learn that restaurants, as we know them, have only existed for a few centuries. Before 1765, there were no restaurants. That is, there were no places that provided the restaurant experience. There was nowhere in which a waiter brought you food and drink that you picked from a menu. In fact, there were no menus anywhere.
There were eating places travellers could go to centuries before that. The countryside was full of inns that would serve food. And there were taverns where one could get drinks. The rich could also eat special meals prepared by private cooks. But none of them could be called a “restaurant”.
A man called Boulanger changed that. In 1765, he opened a place in Paris that sold soups. On his sign he used the word “restaurant” to describe what he was selling. At that time, soups were considered something that could help “restore”(恢复)your health —in French the word “restore” is “restaurer”—so he called the soups “restaurants”. Soon, people started buying Boulanger’s soups even when they were not ill. And over time, people began to use the word “restaurant” to refer to a place selling soup rather than the soup itself. More “restaurants” opened in France, and people began to buy soups more often.
Later, restaurants in Paris began to serve other food besides soup. In the 1790s, menus started to appear. By the mid-1800s, there were many types of restaurants throughout the world. The United States offered coffee shops. Tea houses became popular throughout China. Paris created beautiful restaurants for the rich. The British began to copy the French, and the restaurant idea spread throughout the British Empire.
Today cities are filled with all types of restaurants. Diners have millions of options from which to choose.

A.A person. B.A place. C.Illness. D.Soup.
45.When did restaurants begin to grow internationally?
A.In the 1600s. B.In the 1700s. C.In the 1800s. D.In the 1900s.

(2021·广东·岭南画派纪念中学九年级期中) For his eleventh birthday, Lin was given a gift that would shape his life. On that day his father took him to the Children’s Activity Centre and said he could choose any course that interested him. There was just one requirement: Lin would have to promise to study it for at least one year.
To that point Lin had had many hobbies, but none kept his interest for more than a week or two. His mum once gave him a bag of stamps to encourage stamp collecting. That hobby lasted a week. Then his father got him some paints hoping that Lin’s artistic side would shine through. Those paints were now under his bed, still unopened. This time Lin’s parents would let him decide.
Lin’s eyes moved down the noticeboard that listed all the courses on offer. He stopped at “Photography”. He liked the idea of taking beautiful pictures but the notice said that each student needed their own camera. Although Lin’s family weren’t poor, they weren’t rich either, and a camera cost a lot of money. He continued looking.
The next course to catch his eye was “Language Art”. He didn’t even know what that meant. His father explained that it taught people how to make public speeches. Lin, a shy boy, could think of nothing worse.
Then he saw it. “Cooking” sounded like something he’d like to do. It was inexpensive and convenient, it could be done alone and it was also creative.
Based on Lin’s hobby history, his dad had doubts, but he agreed. Much to his parents’ surprise, Lin kept his promise. He studied cooking at the Centre every Saturday, and practised at home, making delicious meals for his family. Everyone looked forward to birthdays, when they could eat his cakes. Lin got great satisfaction from the pleasure his food brought to others.
The months turned to years but his hobby never changed again.
Now Lin is an adult and runs a successful restaurant. When customers say they enjoy his meal, he still gets the same pleasure he did as a child, and remembers the special gift he received all those years ago.

(2021·黑龙江·桦南县第四中学九年级期中) 15 years ago, my parents bought a small house in the countryside, which they used for holidays. After I was born we started to go to the holiday house more. We used to drive 3 hours to get to our lovely house every Friday evening. During the week my parents worked in London. My two brothers and I went to expensive private schools and we were all very busy. We hardly saw each other. We had several babysitters(临时保姆) as my parents had to work long hours. The only time we could be together was the weekend, and that was my happiest time. However, every Sunday morning was torture because we had to leave the house then. We all hated the idea of leaving our village friends and the beautiful countryside.
Last year my dad had had enough. He sold our big house near London and my parents gave up their jobs and long working hours. They bought a smaller car. We are now living in our holiday house—two adults, three kids and a dog. My parents got jobs that allow them to work from home. We never have babysitters.
The best change for me is that now I go with my brothers to a small local(当地的) school. After school we get on our bikes and ride around to see friends. My life is just so different. We feel calm(平静的) and happy. We have fewer things but for me it seems like we have so much more. I am so glad we have changed our way of life.

People in the West did not have such kind of money until the 15th century. However, the Chinese began to use it in the 7th century.
②Paper was invented by a Chinese man called Cai Lun almost 2000 years ago. But it was not made in Europe until the year 1100. Four hundred years later, a German discovered that he could make the best paper from trees. After that countries rich in forests, such as Canada, Sweden, America and Finland became the most important ones in paper making.
③Paper can be used in many ways. The common uses include newspapers, magazines and books. But do you know that paper can be used for keeping warm? In Finland, the farmers wear paper boots to keep their feet warm in the snow. And even houses can be insulated (使绝缘) from heat or cold with paper.
④However, we have to understand that paper still comes from trees now. If we keep on wasting so much paper, there will not be any trees left on the earth some day in the near future. Every day people throw away about 2800 tons of paper in our city. It takes 17 trees to make one ton of paper. This means that we are cutting down nearly 48,000 tress every day. The fact is that it takes more than 10 years for a tree to grow.
⑤So we must start saving paper right now. We can use both sides of every piece of paper. We can make useful things out of used paper. We can use china cups instead of paper ones. When shopping, we can use fewer paper bags and reuse them if possible.
⑥In short, we should keep a balance between using paper and protecting trees, and do it now before it is too late.

(2021·广东·深圳市福田区实验教育集团侨香学校九年级期中) Looking at the undone homework on his desk always makes David Grey feel uncomfortable. More often than not, David leaves his homework behind and surfs the Internet or watches TV instead, waiting until the last minute. “But the longer I wait,” says David, aged 15, “the more I worry.”
Everyone procrastinates (拖延) because they want to feel good now. The way to do that is to avoid the task. You can procrastinate on nearly anything, even enjoyable tasks such as planning a vacation. “Some people procrastinate cleaning. Some people procrastinate by cleaning,” says Professor Peter Stone. Research has shown that the top tasks young people procrastinate are studying and going to bed. “One big cause for procrastination is that people are afraid of failure, of not meeting others’ expectations,” Stone adds.
Some people believe that procrastination will make them thrive. But researchers disagree. “I did a study several years ago, asking procrastinators to finish a task in a certain period of time,” says Stone. “They did worse than non-procrastinators: they made more mistakes and they took longer. But they thought they did better.” No matter what the cause is, procrastination is usually not going to be good for you. For example, bedtime procrastination can lead to sleeplessness, which in turn can cause many other health problems.
For those who need some drives to stop procrastinating, the best advice might be to take action first. If you’ve been procrastinating on forming a habit of exercise, just put on your walking shoes. A little bit of progress will get you moving.
Next, find something to help you remember to take action. If you want to go to bed at 10:30 pm, you might set a timed dimmer switch (渐暗开关) at 10 pm. When the lights are dimmer, you’ll start going to bed. It works for most people.
Finally, reward yourself every time you make progress. For example, after you’ve run 3 km, enjoy your favourite ice-cream. But be careful: it won’t work the other way around.

IBM scientists recently published a paper in Nature about their new AI system-Project Debater. It can debate with people in front of a live audience. After listening to arguments from is opponent(对手), the system can search around 400 million on line articles in less than five minutes. It looks for ideas that can support its own argument.
Testing on the system began in 2019, when it debated(辩论)with Harish Natarajan, a professional debater who holds the world record for winning the most debate competitions. The topic was about subsidizing(资助)pre-school and the AI argued to support this idea.
