When the sun comes up over the castle of Rocca Calascio, a small mountain village high up in the Italian Apennines, it’s like a silent, magic wonderland. One such sunrise struck Franco Cagnoli with a spiritual calling that led him to go on a mission that affected both the village and him deeply.
Rocca Calascio has seen no resident since 1957. Depopulation of rural or mountain villages in Italy began with the resettlement of villagers in the early 20th century, accelerating after World War Two when people were attracted to urban jobs.
However, like many places, the area is enjoying a revival(复苏)and now home to some families. “To put it in romantic terms, there is a love story between me and the ancient building,” Cagnoli said as he showed visitors round the castle of Rocca Calascio. The castle, with foundations dating back about 1,000 years, is one of the highest in Europe. It began as a tower in a line of connected structures to control and protect the land that stretched inland from the Adriatic Sea.
Cagnoli, now 39, first saw Rocca Calascio when he was 16. He was on a road trip to find himself. “I arrived here as the morning sun lit up the castle. I was blinded by the light and since that day something inside me has changed,” he said. “I thought it was the most beautiful place. I felt special energies, deciding to help its rebirth.” He’s now the castle’s caretaker and head of a cooperative whose members guide visitors.
“Besides temporary visitors, the complete revival has much to do with permanent residents. People of the previous generation didn’t appreciate the land they lived on,” Valeria Befani, a resident in the village, said. “Today’s teenagers, like my children, are proud of their land and are happy if they can stay here.”

B.Reviving Rocca Calascio has a long way to go.
C.Teenagers are proud of their hometown.
D.The future of Rocca Calascio is full of promise.

Liao Wentao, a pet undertaker, put the body of 2-year-old Garfield on a small bed surrounded by flowers. Then he let the cat’s owner say a last goodbye before cremation (火化). “We send off 400 to 500 pets each year, and there’s a great demand for pet funerals,” he told China News.
Keeping pets has become a trend for young people in China and people are more than willing to pay for whatever their pets need. From 2019 to 2021, China’s pet market grew by almost 18% and hit 348.8billion yuan in value in 2021, according to a report by Research Consulting Group.
As the pet economy develops, animal lovers’ various needs have boosted the emergence and development of related businesses such as bathing, pet food, pet beauty and healthcare.
In addition to basic services, pet owners are increasingly paying for many new services, such as training, pet funerals, insurance, photography and entertainment. The growing pet market has also given birth to a large number of new pet-related jobs, noted CCTV News.
Liu Wei, 33, is a famous pet detective in Shanghai. He and his team work on finding families’ lost pets. “We have successfully helped find more than 1,000 pets. Besides cats and dogs, there are other pets like birds, lizards and hamsters,” Liu said. “In many big cities, cats and dogs have become an important part of many families and are taken good care of. So what we look for are not just pets, but family members.”
Apart from pet undertakers and detectives, some people work as pet food testers, pet sitters and pet trainers. According to Tu Di, secretary—general of the Hunan Pet Industry Association, the booming pet market shows people’s improved living standards.
However, there are also problems with the industry, for example, the high fees of taking pets to the vet (兽医). Many pet owners have called for stricter pricing regulations for pet medical services, reported Global Times.

The first model of Apple’s iPhone was launched in June 2007. Since then, many different smartphones have been introduced. The devices now influence our daily lives in many ways. One thing that has changed is that many people now use their phones to easily take pictures without the need for a camera. Not surprisingly, this change has caused major business problems for camera manufacturers.
Of course, the camera built into the first iPhone 15 years ago did not include a high-quality camera able to compete with separate camera models. But over the years, smartphone makers have invested heavily in research and development to change that. Today, many smartphones have high-quality cameras designed to produce better pictures. And most phone devices also offer powerful tools to improve the quality of the pictures we take.
Japan’s Camera &Tmaging Products Association (CIPA) said the digital camera market continually expanded starting in 1999. It experienced its first decrease in 2009 — and continued to fall thereafter. The biggest change appeared from 2010 to 2020, when worldwide camera shipments fell about 93 percent, CIPA reported. The decreases were mainly caused by drops in shipments of digital cameras that have built-in lenses.
However, camera makers have had more success selling digital cameras with interchangeable lenses. This is because these cameras are generally targeted at professional photographers who demand higher quality. Such cameras can produce “high image quality that distinguishes them from smartphones,” CIPA said.
But this does not mean that professional photographers never use smartphones to capture pictures. Brynn Anderson is based with the AP in Atlanta, Georgia. She said: “Sometimes being a photographer with a larger camera can be intimidating to the person being photographed. Using a phone makes it easier for me to get comfortable moments that might not happen otherwise.” Rodrigo Abd, an AP photographer in Buenos Aires, Argentina says using the iPhone makes it easier for him “to always be attentive” to everyday events when not covering a news story. Oded Balilty is based in Tel Aviv, Israel. “It is definitely an alternative tool,” he said of the iPhone. But he added: “It’s the photographer not the device, that determines the quality of a photo.”
32.What is the potential cause of the first decrease of digital cameras in 2009?
A.Less money was invested to improve digital cameras.
B.Cameras had been built into smartphones and improved.
C.Fewer digital cameras with built-in lenses were produced
D.The digital camera market stopped promoting new products.
33.Why do digital cameras with interchangeable lenses enjoy good sales.
A.They are more affordable. B.They have superb shooting quality.
C.They offer the power to beautify photos. D.They are specially designed for professionals.
34.What does the underlined word “intimidating ” in the last paragraph probably pean?
A.Amusing. B.Demanding. C.Rewarding. D.Scaring.
35.What does Oded Balilty mean?
A.The level of the photographer depends on the iPhone.
B.The iPhone completely replaces his professional tool.
C.The professional skills of the photographer is crucial.
D.The iPhone enables him to work at any time and place.

The Wiggles, my girl Nayvah’s favorite show, played on the TV, she screamed out in excitement and started dancing along to the songs. Little Nayvah, nearly two, has a big personality and sense of curiosity!
A week later, me, Nayvah and my son, Leo, four, headed over to my friend Kacie’s place —— a ten-minute drive from our house.
My babies were excited to play with Kacie’s children Tyler, ten, and Nevaeh, eight. While the kids played, Kacie and I chatted in the backyard. As we talked, Kacie took the grate (炉排) off the drain (排水沟) that was next to the back door and poured some drain cleaner down it. “We’ve had blocked drains,” she said.
Hours later, as the sun began to set, I sat with the kids in the backyard while Kacie cooked carbonara for dinner. “Sammy! Can you come here and taste the sauce?” Kacie called out. The kids were happily playing, so I ducked inside. Less than a minute later, after trying the sauce, I went back out.
That’s when I saw Nayvah with her left leg stuck in the drain. My girl didn’t seem upset and, at first, I thought it was quite cute. “Kacie! Kids! Look at this!” I shouted out. “Oh no! I forgot to put the grate back on,” said Kacie. We all let out a little laugh, and Kacie and I tried to gently pull Nayvah out.
But her ankle was completely stuck. My heart sank. “Kacie, call Triple-0!” I said. I lay down next to Nayvah — who was still calm — and told her everything was going to be okay. “I’m here, Nay Nay Nay,” I comforted her.
When two fire trucks and an ambulance soon arrived, I burst into tears. It felt so serious. The firemen tried a few techniques to pull her out. Nothing worked. One fireman, named Shamus, decided to entertain my little girl to keep her calm
