After a long day at the office, Jane Hodgson was on her way home and looking forward to relaxing with a nice cup of tea. While driving, she noticed that there was a car pulled over at the side of the road and a crowd had started to gather around someone who was lying on the ground.
Jane, who had completed first aid at work course with the British Red Cross, pulled over to see if she could do something and it turned out to be lucky for the victim.
Describing the scene she saw, Jane says, “A crowd of onlookers gathered at the scene. A couple of young men were cream-faced and looking lost. They were completely terrified. When I walked up, first-aid kit in hand, they said ‘You’re a first aider—Oh thank goodness.’ They were so shocked that they hadn’t even thought to call an ambulance yet.”
A young girl called Jenny was lying there. It turned out that the teen had been hit by a car and gone over the handlebars of her bike, landing on her head and shoulder.
“I was worried because she had not been wearing a helmet when she got knocked down, and I thought that she should not be moved as I couldn’t be sure about a spinal(脊柱)injury, but after looking her over, in relief, I felt fairly confident that she had escaped relatively unharmed. Even so, as time passed and we continued to wait for an ambulance, the amount of pain the girl was in was increasing. To avoid the risk of her going into shock I kept her talking. We chatted about her boyfriend and anything I could think of to keep her mind off the pain. She squeezed my hand when the pain got too much and this helped,” describes Jane.
Thinking back, Jane says, “I never did find out what happened to the girl. Apart from the boyfriend I wasn’t thanked by anyone else, but that’s OK. For me, knowing that in a small way I helped that girl through what was a frightening experience is all the reward I need. It felt great to know I’d made a difference.”
24.Why did Jane Hodgson stop her car on the side of the road?
    A. To offer some help. B. To repair her car.
    C. To call for an ambulance. D. To pick up a patient.
25.Which part of Jenny’s body might be worst injured?
    A. Her legs. B. Her hands. C. Her head. D. Her stomach.
26.What mattered most in Jane’s help?
    A. Calling an ambulance. B. Offering some first aid.
    C. Finding out what happened. D. Drawing the girl’s attention away from pain.
27.What did Jane Hodgson learn from her experience of helping Jenny?
    A. Not all kindness needs reward. B. First aid can also save a person.
    C. A small act can make a difference. D. It felt good to learn first aid skills.

    C
Some women say the voice in their head gets kinder as they enter midlife, while other women become more critical of themselves. The difference in views appears to be related to the ability to accept age-related changes to their body, researchers have found.
In 2013, Professor Paxton, of the Universityof La Trobe’s Department of Psychology, was interviewed on ABC Melbourne about body image and well-being in women entering midlife. The ABC posted on their Facebook page the topic of the program and the question: Does the voice in your head get kinder as you get older?
The study found 56 percent of comments suggested the voice in women’s heads did get somewhat kinder with age. This view was associated with women accepting the age-related changes in their body as normal. “If they gained weight or they got wrinkles, it was a normal part of aging and they felt fine about it and it didn’t disturb their sense of self,” Professor Paxton said, “They were more likely to value health and well-being as opposed to appearance.”
On the other hand, 40 percent of comments suggested the voice did not get any kinder with age. This view was associated with women finding it difficult to accept being so different from the youthful ideal of women that is upheld in advertising and in the media. Women who expressed this view were concerned about how “invisible” they had become as a consequence. “They reacted negatively to the changes in their bodies as they aged and were very much aware that in our culture, youthful bodies are idealized,” Professor Paxton said.
Understanding why some women are preoccupied with body image in midlife more than others is important given that having a bad body image can lead to physical and mental health problems, Professor Paxton said. This can include self-consciousness and anxiety, eating disorders, and an unwillingness to show oneself in public, which can reduce the amount women exercise or socialize. “They become unsociable and don’t fulfill their full potential. Those sorts of things can make a person very unhappy.”
She said the insights from studies like this support the use of cognitive(认知的)behavioral therapy (治疗) designed to help women in midlife who have a preoccupation with body image to change negative thought patterns. This would involve discouraging them from comparing themselves to younger women, and encouraging acceptance of bodily changes related to age, and “self care” behaviors that improve health and well-being.

    28. What causes the difference in women’s opinions on body image?
    A. Women’s self-acceptance. B. Professors’ advice.
    C. The impact of Facebook. D. Personal health.
    29. What does the underlined word “upheld” in paragraph 4 probably mean?
    A. Introduced. B. Tested. C. Advocated. D. Praised.
    30. How can women change negative thoughts about a bad body image?
    A. By trying to show themselves in public. B. By adopting a new thinking model.
    C. By doing as much exercise as possible. D. By comparing themselves to younger women.
    31. What is the purpose of the text?
A.To show public responses to the changes in their bodies.
    B. To explain that health is more important than appearance.
C.To criticize views on body image expressed in the media.
D.To give advice to middle-aged women on bodily changes.

    D
As university doors opened in September for a new year, an estimated six million people across the world took to the streets in a historic week of climate action. The power of this youth-led campaign reflected the urgency for action on the environment. So what now? For freshers starting a new chapter at university, deciding how to live your life is vital. Here are some ideas about how you can be sustainable as a student.
What you put on your plate matters: nearly a quarter of all greenhouse gases come from agriculture, and most of those are from meat and dairy. Meat and dairy consumption results in excessive(过度的)land use, industrial emissions, methane, water use and deforestation. Cutting out meat is an easy way to reduce your carbon footprint. A meat-free diet has been recommended as the “single-biggest way” an individual can reduce their impact on the planet.
Forget fast fashion: keeping your clothes for as long as possible has much more than just monetary value. In the UK, clothing has the fourth-largest environmental impact after housing, transport and food. So recycle your clothes or mend them.
For some freshers, this will be your first time living alone, which means doing your own washing, cooking and cleaning. There are simple ways you can change your habits to live more sustainably. Wash your clothes at a lower temperature, and choose a bamboo toothbrush or more eco-friendly sanitary(卫生的)products. When shopping, see if there’s a zero-waste shop nearby, where all products are free from plastic packaging. Just turn up with your own container. If you’re planning a weekend away with new friends, try to travel by train or bus.
Individual actions matter, as they demonstrate commitment and provide an alternative to how we can live. But campaigning is important, too. University campuses can be the perfect place for this. If you don’t know where or how to start, see if there are any societies at your university like UK Student Climate Network. Students of the Fossil Free campaign, for example, have brought on huge changes by calling on their institutions to stop using fossil fuels—and 76 UK universities have now committed to it.
    32. What can we learn from the text?
    A. Meat consumption delays industrial development. B. A meat-free diet is suggested for a low carbon life.
    C. Food production generates few greenhouse gases. D. Clothing has a bigger impact on environment than food.
    33. How can students live more sustainably according to the text?
    A. By washing clothes at a lower temperature. B. By shopping less and buying organic food.
    C. By growing their own vegetables on campus. D. By traveling somewhere by train or airplane.
    34. What does the underlined word “this” in the last paragraph refer to?
    A. Alternative lifestyle. B. Individual actions. C. Campaigning. D. Commitment.
    35. What is the best title for the text?
    A. Fashion: A Big Waste of Resources B. Recycle: Individual Actions Matter
    C. How to Live a Zero-waste Life D. How to Be a Sustainable Student

You are reacting instead of responding.

    第二节 读后续写(满分25分)
    67. 阅读下面短文,根据所给情节进行续写,使之构成一个完整的故事。
Elizabeth walked to the yard, carrying a bunch of daisies(雏菊).
“Beautiful flowers for, for... Oh, I’ll never get it right!” She cried, throwing the daisies on the ground. She had been practising her speech for a week.
Part of her couldn’t wait. This Saturday, the great Ana Wolff, famous pianist, would perform at the concert hall in town. For four years, Elizabeth had listened to Ms Wolffs recordings over and over again, loving the way the notes flowed like a rushing mountain stream.
Part of Elizabeth was terrified. Her music teacher at school, Mr Leaf, had asked her to present the flowers to Ms Wolff after the performance. But Elizabeth knew herself well. She had serious stage fright and she really hated it when she had to talk in front of people. Even so, Elizabeth was determined to take the challenge this time.
“How’s the speech going?” asked Elizabeth’s mother, “Want to practice on me?”
“No, thanks,” said Elizabeth, “Mum, I can’t do this! I’ll forget. I might even pass out(昏倒)!”
“Oh, honey. Think about it... sharing the stage with Ana Wolff. What an honour!” Mum gently comforted her.
Elizabeth kept practising. “Beautiful flowers for... for a beautiful performance...” She presented the flowers to the cat, the dog, even the statue in the garden. Soon it was Saturday night, Elizabeth stood at the backstage, behind the heavy black curtains. Holding the bouquet(花束)of red roses, she felt her heart racing wildly and her stomach tightened with nervousness.
The lights dimmed, and Ms Wolff began her performance. She swayed and nodded with her fingers dancing across the keys. Soft sad parts, loud angry parts, parts that sounded fun to play. Drawn into the music, Elizabeth forgot for a moment about the six words she had to say. With a flourish(挥舞), Ms Wolff played her final note. Applause thundered through the hall. People jumped to their feet and cheered.
Ms Wolff smiled and bowed. Then she walked off stage and into the wings(舞台侧面). Almost immediately, she returned to the stage for a second bow.

    应用文(15分):
    Dear Michael,
I am writing to extend to you my utmost congratulations on your winning the first prize of your group in the Chinese Poetry Contest. As your friend, I just want you to know how delighted I was when I know your success.
For these years, you’ve shown great interest in Chinese poetry and kept on reciting poems every day. Not only have you accumulated much knowledge about Chinese poetry but alsoyou have formed a deep understanding of it. It is a reward you richly deserve for your appreciation towards those poems.
All my best wishes for an even more prosperous future!
    Your sincerely,
    Li Hua

    读后续写(25分):
Then came the frightening moment. Clutching the roses, Elizabeth mustered all her courage to edge slowly towards the spot where Ms Wolff was standing. With difficulty, she opened her mouth, mouthing the very six words. But no sound came out. She tried again, only to feel the words stuck in her throat, unable to pour them out. The dim light from the audience gradually became numerous dots in her eyes. Ultimately, she took a deep breath and stammered in a low voice, “Beaut...Beautiful flowers for a beautiful performance!” With this, she tentatively presented the roses to Ana Wolff, who, in return, wrapped Elizabeth in a big hug.
The audience cheered and clapped loudly for them. Through the glisten of the footlights on the stage, Elizabeth could see the crowd whistling and smiling. Backstage, Elizabeth unburdened to Ms Wolff about her secret of stage fright.“That is exactly how I feel every time I go onstage! You need to swallow that fear and go out here anyway.” said Ms Wolff, smiling with a determined look, “Just the way you did tonight.” Then the great Ana Wolff gently drew a single red rose from her bouquet and gave it to Elizabeth, “Here is a beautiful flower for a brave girl.”
