Jane, a reporter, is collecting information for the local newspaper. She is interested in the following things introduced in a magazine.
Smart Schoolbag
Forget to pack the books you need into your schoolbag in the morning rush?
A schoolboy aged 11 has invented a schoolbag. It tells you which books to pack. A small computer and a scanner(扫描装置)are fixed in the bag. As each book is put into the bag, it is checked by the scanner. If any book is missing, a message will be shown on the computer screen to remind you.
Weather Sweets
Can you eat weather?
A university makes that happen. It uses a 3D printer to create sweets based on the weather information of a certain day.
The shapes of the sweets are affected by wind speed. The colors of the sweets are decided by temperature. The sweets act as a weather record of the day when they are made.
Sunrise Bed
It’s hard for you to get up in the morning, isn’t it?
To help you get up, a company has created a “tool” —a sunrise bed.
It wakes you up gently as a sunrise does. Lights built into the bed turn on and start to get brighter and brighter. When the lights are fully on, soft music will begin to play. Choose the best answer(根据以下内容,选择最恰当的答案)
We arrived at the hospital to find Dad was very weak, but his smile was the same as ever. It was another attack of pneumonia (肺炎). My husband and I stayed with him for the weekend but had to return to our jobs on Monday. Local relatives would help Dad get home from hospital and look after him. But I was eager to find a way to let him know that we cared too, even when we weren’t with him.
Then I remembered a family tradition when our children were small. When leaving their grandparents’ home after a visit, each child would write a love note to their grandparents. They hid notes in cereal (麦片) box, under a hairbrush or next to the phone. For days, their grandparents would smile as they discovered these reminders (提示) of our love.
So as I tidied Dad’s kitchen and made up a bed for him downstairs in the living room, I wrote some notes. Some were practical: “Dad, I put the food in the fridge so it wouldn’t go bad.” Some expressed my love: “Dad, I hope you will sleep well in your new bed.” Most notes were downstairs where he would stay for several weeks, but one note I hid upstairs under his pillow (枕头), “Dad, if you have found this note, you must be feeling better. We are so glad!”
Just like his medicines made him better physically, these “emotional vitamins” would improve his health, too. Several weeks later, in one of our regular phone calls, I asked Dad how he was going. He said, “Pretty good. I just found your note under my pillow upstairs!”

It was just pumpkins we were looking for that October Saturday. We were searching for pumpkins that we could carve into fantastic jack-o’-lanterns. We wanted to laugh at their silly faces. We wanted lots of them to decorate our front porch. My brother Tim and I went to the store where we usually get pumpkins every year. They said they only had some baby ones that were too small to carve.
Now what would we do? We went home, wondering if Mom or Dad would have any ideas. Dad said he would take us for a ride to see if a roadside vegetable stand had some pumpkins. “I can’t believe they won’t.” he said. “It’s October after all.” So we piled into the car and drove out of town. The vegetable stand wasn’t there. And we didn’t see any others either. Dad said that he couldn’t figure out where the farmers were selling their vegetables these days. By that time, you can imagine how __________ Tim and I felt. Maybe we wouldn’t have any jack-o’-lanterns this year.
I guess Mom knew the minute she saw us that we had been unsuccessful. But she said we should all just come with her. This time she drove. Where was she taking us? A secret pumpkin store? She seemed to know exactly where she was going.
As she turned the car into the parking lot of City Hall, we saw a farmers’ market. Wow! This is where all the farmers brought their vegetables! There were thousands of pumpkins. Huge ones, tiny ones, medium-sized ones. We’d never seen so many pumpkins to choose from!
We used some of our own money on the biggest one we’d ever had. We got some ordinary-sized ones too. Even Dad and Mom helped carve them. We had so much fun. And our porch is now a fantastic sight!

Astronauts have already visited the moon and lived on space stations. They’ve never been to another planet, but they might visit Mars soon. Astronauts will spend about six months getting to the planet, then about two years on the planet and about six months traveling back to the earth. They’ll be away from the earth for about three years, so they’ll need much food.
It’s very expensive to take food into space. It costs about 120, 000 dollars to carry something that weighs one kilo, so an apple on Mars could cost 20, 000 dollars!
Of course, they will need to take much food with them to feed the astronauts for three years. This amount of fresh food can’t stay fresh, and it is very expensive to take, so they need to find food that is not very heavy.
At the moment, astronauts in space stations eat dried food. It’s very light, so it doesn’t cost much money to carry it into space.
However, astronauts will stay healthier and happier if they eat fresh food. In the future, astronauts on Mars may grow vegetables like carrots and lettuce.
Astronauts on Mars will probably have special machines. They’ll use these machines to change beans into food that tastes like meat or cheese. They probably won’t eat real meat or cheese because it won’t be possible to keep animals in space.
19.Which planet do the astronauts plan to go to next?
A.Mars. B.Space. C.The moon. D.The sun.
20.How long will it take to get to Mars?

C.Because it is very healthy. D.Because it is easy to buy.
22.What may astronauts do in the future?
A.Eat only dried food. B.Grow some fresh vegetables on Mars.
C.Grow food in their spacecraft. D.Spend much money to carry food.
23.What will astronauts get from beans?
A.Apples. B.Food that tastes like meat or cheese.
C.Real meat and cheese. D.Animals.

When everyone in China is wearing masks to stop the novel corona-virus, many people in Western countries don’t seem to want to do the same. For example, an Italian lawmaker was criticized(批评)by his coworkers when he went to work with a mask. They said he was “causing panic”(恐慌). But why do the East and West have different ideas about wearing masks?
Western ideas about masks
In the West, people should wear masks only when they get sick—chronic allergies(慢性过敏)or infectious(传染的)diseases. People see masks as a tool to protect sick people and stop disease from spreading, so healthy people don’t need to wear them. Therefore, during the novel corona-virus outbreak, people would be “treated as a virus spreader” if they go out with a mask. Some European and American people say wearing a mask outdoors makes them feel “worried”, “shy”, and “afraid of being looked at differently.”
But as the number of COVID-19 cases is growing around the world, people in the West are changing their ideas. In the US, for example, many healthy people are starting to wear masks now to protect themselves.
Mask culture in the East
In Asian countries like China and Japan, wearing masks is common. In 1910, Chinese doctor Wu Liande invented the modem medical mask during the pneumonic plague(肺鼠疫). Since then, masks have been a symbol of China’s position as a modem, scientific nation, according to Scottish medical anthropologist(人类学家)Christos Lynteris. During the 2003 SARS epidemic(传染病), people in China and East Asia also used masks to protect themselves.
In Japan, wearing masks shows your politeness when you get a cold or flu. Some Japanese also turn masks into fashion. They have different colors and patterns to choose to match their clothes. Some young women wear masks when they don’t have their makeup on. Many pop stars in Asia also use masks to protect their privacy(隐私). This cultural and historical background has made it easier for people in the East to wear masks when epidemics break out.
34.What did the coworkers think of the Italian lawmaker?
A.He was too worried to work.
B.He made other people nervous.
C.He was unwilling to go to work.
D.He was just trying to protect himself.
35.According to the article, the Western people dislike to wear masks in public because
A.they prefer being laughed at
B.they have their own culture and traditions
C.they fear they will get sick
D.they are not afraid of the novel coronavirus
36.The modem medical mask has been in the world for ________.
A.90 years B.100 years C.110 years D.120 years
37.What might people use masks to do in Japan?

I used to be a pessimist (悲观主义者), thinking that the worst thing might happen in every situation.
Last year, my mother had a serious illness. I felt my whole world turn upside down and I had no idea what I could do to help her with her pain. I often cried whenever I was alone.
Last month, I lost an expensive dress that was a birthday present from my father. I could not fall asleep for a few nights because I felt so terrible about the loss.
There have been many things like these in my life. I really didn’t know how to deal with them until I read If You Have a Lemon, Make a Lemonade by an American writer, Dale Carnegie.
“When the wise man is handed a lemon, he asks: ‘How can I turn this lemon into a lemonade? How can I improve my situation? What lesson can I learn from this?’” he wrote.
I suddenly realized that life is full of ups and downs, so I decided to stay positive (积极的) all the time.
Now when I think of my past, I wish I could have dealt with things differently. When my mother was fighting with her illness, I should have held her hands in mine, telling her that things would get better instead of hiding and crying.
Recently, I took part in a school singing competition. I didn’t win a prize. If I had not read the article, I would be sad and disappointed again. But I smiled after the competition because at least, I had got some experience in the singing competition.
Life is not just a bed of roses. There are thorns (刺) as well, but these thorns help us become braver and better. When life offers us a lemon, let’s try to make a lemonade.

Cao Siyu, born and raised in Beijing, left home at 20 to study in the US and, later, in the UK. Now she works in Paris, France. Being in foreign countries for 12 years, she has a better understanding of both Chinese and Western cultures. She started drawing web comics to help people understand different cultures. Using her pencil, Cao also wants to build a bridge between different cultures.
Tiny Eyes Comics, first created in late 2016, tells the stories of a Chinese girl named Tiny Eyes. Cao has posted more than 300 comics online and they attracted about 41,000 followers. Her comics are about family relationships, food, different ways of thinking and social customs.
This year, COVID-19 has made her realize how important it is to help people from different cultures to communicate with each other. One of her comics shows the cultural differences about wearing masks. To wear or not to wear, that is the question that has been heatedly discussed. In the comics, she explains that Chinese people wear masks to protect themselves from infection, as well as avoiding passing the virus to others.
One of her comics shows different ways of expressing love. In her comics, an American girl tells her mother directly that she loves her over the phone; the girl Tiny Eyes expresses her love by asking her beloved ones about their health and buying nice things to make their life more comfortable. Another difference between the Chinese and Westerners is about hot water. French restaurants always serve sparkling water (苏打水) before the meal; in the US, restaurants serve iced water; while in China, people drink hot water a lot.

Have you ever dreamed about sending a letter to yourself or your friends in the future? While express mail (快递) is a fast way to send your letters, there is another type of mail appearing in China as a new business—future mail.
“The letter should be sent next Mother’s Day and not a day earlier!” Lin Xiaofan, a college student in Shanghai, tells one of the companies offering the service.
Lin Xiadan wrote the letter to her mother nearly a year earlier to express her love to her mother for next Mother’s Day.
“Offering this service makes people slow down and lets them understand the meaning of ‘time’ in another way,” said Zheng Zhimin, manager of a “future mail” company. Zheng thinks “future mail” letters help remind us of care, friendship and love.
While “future mail” is becoming more and more popular, some people are wondering what will happen if the postal address changes or if the company goes broken before the letters arrive. Zheng said customers are glad to sign a contract (签订合同) to make sure that they can be compensated if their letters are lost or damaged.
Most of the customers are college students and young white-collar (白领) workers. Psychologists (心理学家) said that young Chinese might have a new way to express their feelings through this service. Most people put their hopes and wishes in the letter so that they can experience the connection (联系) between the past and the present when they receive the letter.
